    Ratatouille from an Acme Box

Acme makes cooking so easy and fun! It is such a delight to get these boxes and I love the minimal environmentally friendly packaging. Some of my favorite boxes have been their pasta with broccoli + pecorino sauce, spring pasta salad with asparagus and shiitakes, and their vegetable pho. So delicious and enc me to try new things. Love it and can't wait for my next box!

Our Acme boxes help us eat balanced meals more consistently! They're meals we look can forward to. They strike a good balance of ease/deliciousness. Acme fits well with our family's current schedule & skills (I'm a bad meal planner and I accept it now). Acme is great for: ---Those with limited time! I've had goals to eat less processed foods, switch to lean proteins & cook more plant-based meals but I struggled to establish these habits. For years I purchased produce with good intentions but so much went bad because of poor planning or recipes too ambitious for a weeknight. Thanks to Acme, I'm ordering last minute take-out less & preparing less processed "convenience food." For our family, the price is worth it because we are FINALLY eating more healthy & are way less stressed around meal time. ---Those who want to feel more confident in the kitchen. Acme's recipes use repeating seasonal ingredients which makes cooking feel like less of an overwhelming chore after a long work day. Their premixed sauces/marinades & spice mixes speed up prep/cleaning. ---Those who want to eat more seasonally/locally. Unfortunately, farmers markets are scheduled during the middle of our work day so they're not a reliable grocery source for us. Due to our location, picking up a CSA box is not feasible at the moment. Acme has been a fantastic alternative! I also appreciate the structure a meal kit provides. Not every single ingredient is from WA (today's tofu is from CA & last month's cod was from Alaska). However, last week's salmon & pasta was from Bellingham, today's eggs came from Shelton, coffee & bread from Seattle, pork from Skagit Valley & blueberries were from Puyallup. The majority of the box is local & when I compare my past consumer habits, Acme is my most feasible step towards locally sourced eating at the moment. Customer Service: In the past, some Yelpers had difficulty with customer service & billing but this has not been my experience. Once the recipe was not included and on another occasion, an ingredient was missing. Both were resolved reasonably (the recipe was available online the day I emailed them & the missing ingredient was delivered 2 days later). Personally, I've had a positive experience. Compared to other meal kits: Acme uses less packaging than other meal kits and their packaging is actually recyclable in my city! I've tried other national meal kits and while the food was fine, some recipes featured ingredients that are not readily available (i.e. fig compote, squid ink spaghetti) & were difficult to reuse for other meals. In contrast, we've already remade a few Acme recipes using ingredients from our Safeway. How we Acme: We mix & match the Surf + Turf box. We order 3-4 meals a week (1 meal is 4 servings) and get milk, eggs & butter. We make one meal for dinner (2 servings) and have the other 1-2 portions for lunch. At first we wondered "is this gonna be enough?" and surprisingly, they are. We were finally eating balanced servings and consequently my partner has lost some weight. In the future, I could see us switching to the Acme's produce-only box if we want to save some money or have more time to shop/prep. Acme does not meet everyone's needs/priorities but if you like the convenience of meal kits, looking to incorporate balanced meals into your weekly rotation and wanting to support a local, family run business, check out Acme!

Anyone who works for a living knows the feeling: you've had a long day, the kids have activities…read moretonight, and even though the fridge is full from your last trip to the grocery store you have no clue what's for dinner. So you fumble through the kitchen and create the same ol' same ol' recipe you've thrown together a zillion times in the past. "Someday," you say to yourself "I'm going to try some new recipes." But who has time for that?! Well, maybe you don't, but Oleg down at Salt Pepper & Oil does! SPO is a fairly new business with a twist on the current "meals ready to cook" trend that's taking busy local households by storm. Owner Oleg is a BTC Culinary School grad and former employee of some restaurants you've definitely heard of. In other words, he knows food. And he knows it well. And he's now made it his business to create delicious, locally-sourced recipes to cook at home. Yes, Oleg is pretty much a dream come true for us busy folks! What sets SPO apart - other than those amazingly fresh ingredients - are the fact that you can order as much or as little as you want. Just you and the spouse for dinner one night? Order a single entrée, make a salad, and you've got a meal. Big crowd coming over next Saturday? Order multiple portions and you're going to impress the heck out of your guests. And the BEST part? Oleg does all the work for you! Everything arrives pre-chopped in individual numbered baggies. You simply "add #1" to the pan, "mix in #2" and follow the easy-to-read directions until - quite miraculously - you've got a beautiful meal ready to serve. It's so easy even my cooking-challenged spouse has managed to churn out some dinner deliciousness when I'm not home! And it's a great way to teach the kids how to cook. SPO's menu also changes weekly, so there is always something new to choose from when you order ahead on the website. One of my recent favorites was the Chicken Yakisoba, which Oleg had featured at his recent Yelp event and which I was dying to try again. There are also always a couple of "same day" favorites you can grab as well. Try the spaghetti and meatballs - they are DIVINE. (And this is coming from someone who is known for making pretty darned good meatballs herself!) And finally, being able to order just one thing or several is nice when trying to budget and plan for the next week's meals. You don't have to commit to five nights worth of meals, or giant entrees when you're only cooking for one. I found the value to be very good, especially considering the prep work is already done, the meals are delicious, and I don't have to THINK about what's for dinner! Thank you, Oleg, for bringing your delicious talents right here to Bellingham. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Gentlemen, (and modern, working ladies), if you are looking for an opportunity to woo your favorite…read moredate, but your culinary creativity involves a can of Spaghettios or throwing a piece of meat on the grill, let me suggest you stop by Salt, Pepper & Oil. SPO will elevate your meal times, and might help your chances for a little "dessert" with your special someone if you do the dishes too. Owner Oleg has pre-sliced and diced fresh, local ingredients, bagged and numbered the items, and prepared a simple recipe indicating which item to throw into the skillet first. You save time, energy and money with none of the hassle of finding a classy recipe, shopping for high-end ingredients, or butchering your finger with a knife. If you can turn on a stove and cut open a bag with scissors, you have all the skills you are going to need. You just need to go online, select from the current week's gourmet menu options and then schedule your pick-up or delivery time. The meal can be decreased in size to accommodate those who strike out and end up dining alone or increased in size for those feeding a family of___. Voila, a fresh, tasty, home-cooked meal can be prepared by you in your kitchen in about 15 minutes. Hopefully your "on-after" with your main squeeze lasts longer than that considering the thoughtful, delicious meal you prepared without all of the hard work.
