I loved that they gave me the option to add whipped cream for the mocha to make it more aesthetic and complete. The mocha didn't have much notes of pistachio but it was fairly sweet and creamy. The rosey matcha had a more apparent flavor but otherwise felt fairly standard for a matcha. There's another major coffee shop in Lopez Island nearby, so either here or there would be good candidates for coffee or other drinks that are more innovative than the standard I wish they published prices for the seasonals since we were left to guess and wait for the total, in which case may be awkward to ask for a breakdown of the drink prices. Beekeeper was a latte with white chocolate powder and honey, great pairings for a relatively straightforward drink. It was nicely hot but not burning hot, perfect for the cooler morning. The golden milk latte has tumeric and is also pretty refreshing. Prices are on par with other coffee shops in the area like Isabel's but a tad bit cheaper since we got both drinks at a larger cup (16oz). I'd wish if they provided prices of the specialty drinks, so we can decide how much coffee we want to get to start our day here.

Didn't even make it though breakfast before we knew we had to do a repeat the very next day because it was so good. Crepes are French style and are clearly made with skill and talent. The space is bright and cheery with very friendly staff. I see other reviews mentioning waits during busy times or complaints but experienced nothing of the sort. We were a bit off peak and didn't have that issue but I can honestly say I'd be HAPPY to wait for the food at Leaven. This is really something special and whoever is behind it has a gift.

Sadly it tarnished is experience of the bakery which I had highly praised and was the first stop on our anniversary trip. Aside from this, the bakery has a variety of pastries that usually go quick in the mornings, my favorite is the chocolate croissant. They also have a full sandwich and pizza shop as well as indoor and outdoor seating areas. Service is always fast and they get your food out to you quickly. Again usually this is our go to so hoping it was just a one off experience.

The lady behind the counter had been at the cash register, cell phone in hand. The cell phone was visibly greasy and grimey. She set it down next to the cash register to help us. To my utter shock, she did not wash her hands and went directly from the cash register to pick up my loaf WITH HER BARE HANDS. No hand washing, right after she had been at the cash register with her cell phone. When I refused the loaf, saying I no longer want it because she's touching it with her bare hands, she was extremely rude and snapped at me, saying that "in Washington state, the law allows you to handle food without gloves." When I responded with "well I still don't want it because your hands are on it and you did not wash them." She got even more defensive and rude and repeated to me that in WA state, you can handle food with bare hands. No ma'am, you are incorrect. Per Washington State code, section WAC 246-215-03300(2): "Food Employees shall wash their hands as specified under WAC 246-215-02305. Food Employees may not contact exposed, Ready-to-Eat food with their bare hands and shall use suitable utensils such as deli tissue, spatulas, tongs, Single-Use gloves, or dispensing Equipment." I believe that a fully baked loaf of bread, which can be sliced and eaten, qualifies as "ready to eat food." There is an exception, under WAC 246-215-03300(4), which states that you can use your bare hands if you have other extensive policies in place, which includes TWO or more safeguards, like DOUGLE HANDWASHING, nail brushes while washing, or hand antiseptics, which she clearly did none of. She literally put down her greasy, visibly dirty cell phone, turned around and grabbed my loaf of bread with her bare hands then got defensive and rude about it. FURTHERMORE: some of the pastries and loaves were exposed and they had the doors wide open. There were several flies buzzing around in the bakery. Thus, we asked for the loaf inside the display. Alas, that was also tainted by dirty hands!

This place was absolute perfection from start to finish. Relaxed but upscale environment. Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. The sommelier was also great. He was so clearly loving his job and it showed. He described each wine and its characteristics with enthusiasm and excitement. This was the first time I'd ever had wines that were so nicely paired with each course. Quite eye opening, for me at least. You can tell this restaurant cares deeply about craft... not just in execution, but in intent. The menu didn't feel like it was trying to cater to trends or preferences. It felt like the chef had a clear point of view, and the food followed that vision. I appreciated that a lot. The salmon and veal were both beautifully executed. And though we don't drink alcohol, we were offered two beautiful non-alcoholic pairings (one sparkling, one rose) rather than the usual soda fallback. It made us feel cared for, not sidelined :) Pastry-wise, the brioche, olive oil cake, and macaron were all excellent. I'm lowkey regretting not staying until Sunday to try the pastry pop-up. Before the final course, we were offered a lemon and lovage sorbet as a palette cleanser. Somehow it made me laugh because it reminded me exactly of a Chinese herbal remedy (藿香正气水) I used to take in the summer in China. Not a critique, just a funny flavor memory I wasn't expecting in a fine dining environment and so uniquely contextual to my own cultural background. That said, for an elevated experience, I do think every touchpoint matters. And this is why I'm taking off one star. The bathroom missed the mark. The lights are on a timer (which I didn't realize until they shut off while I was inside and I thought it was motion activated. I ended up waving my arms like a wacky inflatable tube man haha), and somehow there was only one paper towel left, and the soap dispenser was visibly dirty. Small details, but noticeable in an otherwise polished evening. All in all, this is clearly a passionate team doing thoughtful work. With just a bit more attention to the details beyond the table, it could be truly seamless.
