Wow! What an impressive place! A nursery, farm, and farm market within Bellingham city limits, it's a beautiful place to visit. We were shopping for plants and vegetables, they have quite a bit of both. I was stunned by the large size of the local lettuces and the very very reasonable prices/ Staff were very friendly and well informed. Joes Garden is a community treasure. You don't even need to stop in to enjoy it. Every time I drive by and witness how much TLC goes into tending their fields, I feel joy and happiness. I haven't been to many nurseries in the area yet as I just moved here last year. (I've been to a few) so far this is my favorite. My second time going was today and I was surprised that they still had a pretty solid selection of goodies to pick from. The prices for me is what I really like and the fact that everything is GMO free and only the good stuff (if that made any sense at all) I'm just really happy with everything and all my plants that I purchased in April are thriving even though I'm really awful at gardening. I was surprised that the owner immediately said, "No," to me when I said I would love to see them use paper bags instead of plastic. Unfortunately I felt so surprised and disappointed that he was so negative, that I walked away. I should have stayed to discuss it because we all know how detrimental plastic is to our world. He started to explain the problem of wetness and paper, which no doubt is a problem. It is also one that could be remedied by double bagging. I would still like to suggest that they at least provide the option of paper, especially for onions, potatoes, green beans, and other items that are not wet. I recently read the article below. It is sobering to learn that plastic really is not recyclable. The plastics industry does not want us to know that and so we are encouraged to "recycle" our plastic. Great selection which changes with the seasons. Fresh fruit and veggies are their mainstay but have jams, jellies, fruit pies, etc. all dependent on what local craft person has created. Worth a visit though, even if the selection is sporadic. read more

I drove past Joe's garden probably 1000 times while I've lived in Bellingham and only just decided to stop by. They have SOOOOOO many different flower baskets and vegetable seedlings for gardens it's crazy! I didn't realize how big it actually is but there are greenhouses in the back with tons of plants. They sell seasonal veggies in their store and the staff are all super friendly. My boyfriend and I were not there to shop for seedlings but they encouraged us to talk a walk around and enjoy the plants (which we definitely did!). They have little carts for bigger orders so you don't have to make multiple trips to your car. They have a huge variety of plants - several different types of blueberry plants, different lettuces, etc. It gets really busy here on weekend mornings so be prepared to struggle a bit for parking. read more

I started purchasing fresh produce here about three years ago, shortly after moving to town. The prices on their pesticide free produce were incredible - and one head of their romaine lettuce made a salad for 6 adults. This year, I purchased starts for my garden from Joe's. The best place around to buy veggies. The freshest (most comes from their fields) veggies, the lowest prices. Simple. I Just love Joe's Gardens. They've been around since the 30s and while they are not certified organic, they practice sustainable gardening without the use of pesticides etc... sometimes local is better than organic. I wait every year for their Romano beans - I type of really flavorful Italian runner bean - and their beautiful garlic, which they sell by the braid in late summer/fall. They also offer keeping veggies (cabbages, carrots, potatoes, beets, onions) to help you through the winter. They are seasonal and shut down between mid October and early spring when they come out with veggie starts. No downside to this place. Love the people too. I used to get most of my greens in season from Joe's Garden - they aren't organic but are no spray which is good. But I recently stopped by to get some kale and basil and in my interactions with the owner felt disrespected to the point of asking myself why am I supporting this jerk? And in talking with my partner and her friend (who used to work there) about it learned that they also have issues with the owner who they described as "problematic". So Mr Owner of joes garden - you just lost a customer with your arrogance and ignorance and disrespect. When someone shows you who they are, I believe them. I won't be back. read more

Joe's garden is one of the places that makes Bellingham a wonderful place to live. We depend upon them from the moment that they open in the spring (when we go for veggie starts and hanging basket starts), throughout the season for produce, and then as the season winds down for more starts for our winter garden. The people working there are incredibly helpful and wise about planting in this region and they are always willing to help schlep mulch or potting soil. The food prices are fantastic, the produce is gorgeous, and they always have big lots of fresh fruit for canning. Not a single complaint about Joe's! read more

I strongly recommend "JOE'S BEST" transplants. They are sold throughout the greater Bellingham area. And, I'm here to tell you one 4" pot may look like a tangled mess; but that's only superficial. Buy them when they first appear: My 4" pot of JOE'S BEST SNOW PEA yielded 47 healthy seedlings and 3 healthy germinating seeds -- a total of 50 plantlets for $1.25! They had already been innoculated with Rhizobium bacteria and were easily separated into individual seedlings. I started 4 different kinds of lettuce and each $1.25 pot yielded six healthy seedlings. Compare that with the price of a packet of seed and the uncertainty of wondering when to start the seed. JOE'S BEST are a great value for the Whatcom County gardener! read more

The quality is high now doubt about that, but the service is so so. I really hate as a customer going somewhere where I am treated as an inconvenience. They are always moving racks around and asking people to move out of the way please. It is nicely said but the customers should feel welcome, not that they are in the way. There is not a better business in the world than Joe's Garden. I wish I could give them a 10 out of 5. The fruits and vegetables are the best you can buy and the prices are fair. Great nursery stock and fresh veggies but wow are they falling behind on customer service. Looked on website for info on E. Washington fruit to order by the box, see great varieties but no info on quantities, price, availability dates; says call for info. Called, talked to two different people, didn't know specific varieties/timeframes/prices -- said come in ((40-mile roundtrip for me) and see what shows up. Went in, asked about a specific variety, clerk was mocking and insulting about my interest in that variety, said loudly "Oh wow, that's so an old-lady type of peach, c'mon, you really need to get with the 21st century, we're getting in better stuff than that." Was really shocked that Joe's would hire such a big-mouth, blowhard guy and let him work out front. Would be great if they'd post details for pricey specialty goods like fruit by the box (which they promote!) so customers don't have to drag it out of harried, untrained, uninformed clerks. read more
