It has literally been a decade or more since I've visited Tu Lan and it's pretty much just as I remembered. Just a few tables, totally not fancy, and very satisfying food. Great portions, friendly service.

They've updated their sign outside! By the Way, I've been coming here for awhile now and first time eating with a big group. There's space upstairs check out the video. Food is still good as always!!! Service still the same.

After seeing the Broadway show The Notebook today, we did not plan where to eat for early dinner. We were strolling on Market St. when a friend suggested Tulan so we ended up at this hole in a wall! It is a small restaurant and since we were 6, we ended up eating upstairs. One friend saw on the floor a dead cockroach. She was not pleased about it. Being new at this restaurant, some of us took a while browsing the menu. The server arrived and answered our questions. She was nice. We ordered Imperial Rolls, Hanoi Style Beef with Rib, Beef sautéd over vermicelli with Imperial Roll as side order, Wonton (pork) egg noodle soup, Basil leaf ground pork over rice, Fried Fish in ginger sauce, Marinated fish. The wall decors were simple except there was a picture frame of Julia Child from the SF Chronicle who dined at Tulan in 1980s. We had time to update ourselves while waiting for our food. The Imperial rolls were served first as appetizers. The food arrived one at a time and hot. We mostly enjoyed the food except one friend she said her ground pork with rice was lacking some taste so she ordered some sauce to add the flavor. We did not know that we had to go down to get our bill. We paid Dutch style. We said we wanted to return for the catfish as it was cooked to perfection.

All orders came out very flavorful!! Cooked to perfection. Got the top three choices and did not disappoint. Workers were kind, greeted us kindly with a smile. They were attentive and helpful. Although location may be eh, this local spot is worth the experience. Place is small and has many seating and has an upstairs.

Tu Lan is a San Francisco institution. I have been coming here for many years and it still hits the spot. One of my favorites is the grilled pork with egg rolls and rice. A lot of the items on the menu is under $15 which is very rare for San Francisco restaurants nowadays. The Thai tea is really good, yet small. I would need two of these LOL. The staff is extremely nice and friendly. The best parking would be the 5th and Mission parking garage and walk fast to the restaurant because the area is very questionable, especially at night. But you'll definitely enjoy your meal and it's such a cozy spot with plenty of seating downstairs and upstairs as well. One of my friend's favorite items is the curry fried rice and it's really good! So next time you're looking for a delicious yet inexpensive meal near downtown or Soma, I would highly recommend Tu Lan!

Don't let the location distract you from this hidden gem on the edge of 6th street and Market st! I've been coming to place since the late 90's when I use to work down the street from this place on Howard st. The service is always quick and friendly and the food is hot, fresh and made to order! The pricing is fair considering the portions sizes and I can eat off the usual three order over a few days! My go to are #20 #4 and their Chicken Curry Fried Rice (the curry powder really makes this dish stand out!) This place has come a long way. I even remember when the current chef first started and was being trained by the guy before him and now the "new guy" is greyed haired! The food is consistent so what you have the taste for will be there when you get it which is a nice thing! A few years back they renovated the seating area and it's pretty nice and a big difference from what it was back in the day. A few months ago I made a drive from vallejo on my day off and I bumped into the new mayor of San Francisco (I didn't realize who he was at first but I did notice the men in black with earpieces!) Not related to the food but he did ask me how long I've been going there and I pretty much told him what I'm sharing with you in this review. Definitely try this place out and I know you'll find a new favorite dish. I hope you love this place as much as I have over the years! J Suggestion: if you are not feeling the area (which I understand) just call in your order to go!

Stopped by for a quick snack, but ended up making a meal out of it. Both the Summer Rolls and the Imperial Rolls (fried spring rolls) were delicious. It's a bit stuffy in here and I was a bit confused on how to dine in the first time around (pick an open table and someone will come over). However, it's a very solid option for food (especially Vietnamese spring/summer rolls) if you're hungry and happen to find yourself in this part of the city.

Ate here because we were going to attend a performance at the Golden Gate Theatre. There were 6 of us and they sat us upstairs. This is the epitome of a greasy spoon hole in the wall! We each ordered something different and everyone seemed to enjoy their dishes. Portions were very big, so maybe two dishes would be enough for three people if you came with your family or good friends. I ordered a combination plate with fried rolls and pork. The rolls were delicious, especially with the fish sauce that came with it, but the pork was really dry; it seemed like maybe the pork had been cooked earlier and not freshly cooked. The items came with a large amount of rice and some salad. As I mentioned, each person ordered something different and, I have to say, everything else looked better than mine except the "chow mein", which I would never order at a Vietnamese restaurant anyway. The chow mein came with very crispy noodles and the person who ordered it expressed concern over it, so they brought her a separate plate of just plain noodles. This was an indication that the restaurant really tried to please their customers, so that was a plus. The chicken with vegetables came with rice and looked really good. The other dishes looked good, too! All said and done, I'd go back if I'm in the area again. Have to say, the prices were very reasonable!

Hidden gem? hole in a wall? Instant classic? I would say all the above and then some. Tu lan is a bistro that cranks out some of the best Vietnamese/Chinese classic dishes in SF. Picture this: it's lunch hour and everyone and their moms are in line (including me). Delivery drivers, cops, construction workers, finance bros. I could go on & on with the eclectic patrons that visit this place and they all have one thing in common. It's to get a plate or two of bun thit nuong (grilled pork), wonton soup or their famous no.17 the grilled pork, imperial roll (absolutely delicious, crunchy & peppery) over rice noodles. I doused mine with nuoc mam (fish sauce) and completely destroyed it. Will be back for all of eternity.

Do they have in person dining yet?

My Friends, yes; it's been that way for more than four months. The place is small, and I just eat next door at the Rompus Room! Full bar with friends. I loved the Imperial rolls and better the grape rolls! Dangerously delightful. Your, DON.

My bf ended up sharing his order with me because I didn't enjoy my Cioppino ($42.) The seafood was bland, all tasting very much alike, & the broth didn't give off that complex spicy tang that my favorite cioppinos possess. My table started with an appetizer of Red Chili Garlic Shrimp ($18) -- from the description, we were expecting a dry, possibly sautéed preparation & were disappointed that the shrimp were sitting in a watery broth. Though I was letdown by my picks here, I know my group enjoyed theirs. We were treated very well by our waiter & by the host who gave us a beautiful window seat; we enjoyed the view of the sun setting over the bay. Not a restaurant I'd regularly return to, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it (with a few caveats, of course) to someone looking for a sit-down Pier 39 meal.

We also got the seafood platter to try a variety of oysters and their shrimp cocktail, which were all delicious. Steamed claims in garlic butter was an obvious order. No regrets. I also ordered the crab burger and clam chowder ($36). The clam chowder was hot, creamy and not too salty. The burger came with a good amount of crab. I had the opportunity to visit the this location yesterday (4.30.26). The restaurant was absolutely beautiful, the ambiance of the restaurant...unmatched. As a writer imagine my utter shock and dismay to be racially discriminated against by the Host of the Waterbar when myself and a colleague were told there were no outside seats only to watch four white men to be given the choice to be seated outside or inside, immediately following what we were told. While they had a party of four, there were only two of us. The ambience here was one of the most beautiful...but we were only privy to a glimpse of the luxury design as we we whisked off down a few steps to the back corner of the restaurant where no one was dining...as if we were escaping some war torn country and they had taken pity on us. While the Indian woman who I dined with voiced her disdain for the obvious difference in treatment she believed we should stay.
