Tyler's Donuts is a no nonsense donut shop in Carpenteria, CA. No frills, no IG interest wall. Just serving up classic donuts, croissants (including hot bakes), and basic coffee drinks. They are located in an unassuming shopping center anchored by an Albertsons grocery store. The donuts and all the baked goods are good ole fashion bakery made. The donuts had a traditional, classic taste. They also specialize in croissants. They have traditional $3.25, fruit filled $3.25, and hot bakes $6. Puffy, golden flaky layers. The croissants are huge, the size of my hand. Rustic looking. Not perfect looking but that just adds to the house made look. The odd thing I noticed though was the menu board. They listed prices for everything except the donuts. Where are the donut prices? They ought to change that to get some prices on the menu or labeled on the trays. Something. We have been here numerous times and have tried most of their donuts and have no complaints! They do a light glazed donut and it is delicious. Their old fashions are perfect! With the crunchy edges, you cannot go wrong. Big fans of the apple fritters and Boston cream donuts. Only thing I wish is that they made more donut holes... they are likely to run out by 8:30 on the weekends. But overall great experience and we love coming here. Quick service. read more

This local shop has gone straight downhill for several years.. Usually the inside is dirty with trash out front and out of a selection of donuts by 0900. Make the damn numbers for sale T least up to 1200 or 1300! I will drive to KK to get fresh donuts! read more

Stopped in for a maple bar donut. Service was fine. However, the donut was disappointing compared to other donut shops version. It was average in taste, and a bit smaller though it was more expensive than many places (outside of Santa Barbara County). It was 2 dollars. This is pretty much your standard donut shop, but they do have a nice variety of donuts and they are good. I thought the prices were a little high for what they offer, but in all fairness, I would expect that in Carpinteria. The place is located out at the end of a large strip mall, so there is ample parking available. read more

All about the corn flan!!! 5 stars!! It's the only reason why I go in. I often tell them it's amazing and the staff puts a cordial smile that is very telling. They've heard this praise many many times and they know it's good. It's perfectly baked dark caramel in color, no crust, bits of whole corn kernels in the soft textured creamy corn filling. Decent place. The donuts were fine. The only thing that left us with negative feelings was how donuts are priced. We tried to clarify which donuts are included in the price of a box of a half dozen (already assuming the larger ones would cost extra). We were told they were ALL included for the price listed on the board. So we went on to pick the donuts. We ended up paying almost $40 for a half dozen donuts! Even with majority of our selection being "basic" donuts. I questioned the price but it turns out that if you have a single specialty donut, your entire order gets charged individually. Since there was a line, we decided just to pay it. This definitely left a bad impression. read more

Stopped by as we were driving from Santa Barbara to LA... in desperate need of coffee after a little too much wine tasting the evening before. There is a Starbucks basically next door but donuts sounded perfect for the particular situation and my SO remembered this place as being a local favorite (she grew up in the area). The donuts are pretty good. They're known for their donut holes and it's not hard to sell me on a food item in miniature since I always like to eat like I'm at a cocktail party. So definitely try out a mixed bag of donut holes. What the REAL surprise was - the coffee was actually excellent. You never get good coffee at local donut shops but this was more than drinkable. Visiting the area for the weekend so decided to get some local donuts and with 4 stars as their rating I thought this was a good choice. Staff was extremely friendly. I purchased 3 donuts and a ham and cheese croissant. I'll start with the croissant; I will say that we asked it to be heated and it was heated to the proper temperature such that the cheese inside melted but did not burn your mouth when eating it. These are pre made and so the ham and cheese are encapsulated which is kind of cool. My feedback on this is that it was really really salty. The reason for this, I'm guessing is that there was way too much cheese and ham naturally is salty. The cheese seemed to be Monterey Jack which is saltier from my experience. Also, it wasn't shredded and spread out so you would get large pockets. I had a hard time giving this feedback as there usually is no such thing as "too much" cheese. I got a glazed donut, old fashioned chocolate topped donut and a raised maple donut and I will say that all three were really dry which suggested that maybe they were not fresh? The glazed donut had an insufficient amount of glaze, the old fashioned was standard and the maple was not glazed (I know it all places so this but wanted to share) and there was an insufficient amount of maple on it. Overall, subpar especially considering that it really isn't that inexpensive which made me feel a bit worse. I'd say that if you really like cheese and salt that the croissant is a win for you, just not for me. read more

Well, they serve donuts, so they get at least three stars. Easy walking distance from Holiday Inn and Motel 6. The day I was there, they did not open at 5:00 a.m. as the sign on the door indicated. It was a little concerning that there wasn't even anyone inside, and yet the cases were full of donuts. Update #1 from 2017: Sad to say this place has gone downhill. Now I think they make all their donuts using the same dough. Buttermilk Bars (my favorite) don't have even the faintest hint of buttermilk taste. They taste the same as every other cake-type donut. And their "fruit" frosted cake donuts all get the same frosting but with food coloring added to make them different colors. So basically you have a choice of plain sugar flavor (don't taste any vanilla even) or chocolate. Sadly, only donut place in town. Too bad. Update #2 from 2018: I don't know what happened but they are back, baby! Everything once again tastes great, even the Buttermilk Bars! I'm taking away one star because they don't offer flavored frosting for their regular donuts. In other words, just because a donut has pink or orange frosting, don't expect it to taste like anything other than sugar. I stopped in Carp for the sole reason of buying and consuming a Doughnut or two. I checked Yelp before I dipped into the crazy world of sugared, fried dough and found Tyler's in Carpenteria which is on my way to Santa Barbara : my ultimate Easter Sunday destination. Tyler's is a pretty unassuming retail space jammed with display cases of Donuts and coffee making equipment: not terribly clean but not bad. The service ladies are pleasant and helpful. I bought a dozen mixed with an emphasis on cake. The quality went from good (glazed) to excellent (buttermilk both glazed and non). The cake doughnuts are buttery and crumbly and the frostings and glazes are not sickeningly sweet. The buttermilk doughnuts are obviously made with real buttermilk in that there is no vinegar after taste. Many bakers, in order to make a few extra pennies use vinegar to "sour" regular milk. This is not done here. The big winner though was the drip coffee: deep rich flavor, nutty, fruity. A real god send to me as I was caffeine deprived and in need of a fix. Thus the coffee makes up the points and takes Tyler's to 4 stars. A note on the clientele : a refreshing mixture of surfers both young and old as well as local day workers plus a big smattering of what we used to call yuppies. As a city guy it did my heart good to see various cultures mixing: out there living the life. For example: there is a bench table outside Tyler's. when i entered the store there were 3 Latinos sitting there discussing their children while 3 older surfer guys sitting on the other side of the table discussed the same.
