This was my second visit to Tyler Automotive. I went to subpar mechanics recently that I just didn't trust and my car still didn't feel right. Had my front and rear shocks and struts replaced with a wheel alignment. I had to have my car towed to Tyler's Friday afternoon knowing they're closed on the weekends. I called to let them know my car would be there at whatever time on Friday and whenever they manage to get to it was fine. Becky answered the phone and after I told her what was going on with my car, she let me know I would have to pay for the suspension check since I had the initial repairs done elsewhere - totally reasonable and 100% transparent. I got a text at 2:11pm today to review what they found and they called a few minutes later to go over it and get permission to do what was needed. It was only $70 for the suspension inspection plus a free quality control inspection. They also fixed one of the tire valves for me and filled the front two that were shockingly low. I literally just had all 4 filled elsewhere. The most expensive was the alignment which was $135. A little higher than what I'm used to but honestly, you get what you pay for. They called 2 hours later to let me know my car was ready. I'm sad to say that I have to heavily downgrade my review of Tyler. My fiancée's car had a clutch issue recently during the winter storm. We called Tyler and asked if they could help with a manual transmission car because we'd have to have it towed there. They said yes. Then after we had it towed, they said they didn't know how to work on it. We tried to drive it across the street to Glendale Automotive, but Tyler had killed the battery. So I had to push it back the 10 yards to get it into a parking spot at Tyler and wait for another tow truck. No one from Tyler came out to ask if we were ok or offer help as I pushed. We did get it over to Glendale Automotive with a tow, and Glendale fixed it right up, no problem. If Tyler had just been honest, we could have towed it to Glendale from the jump and saved ourselves a lot of time, money, and literal physical pain from pushing the car. read more

My oil and coolant were both draining quickly so I took my 2010 Subaru Forester to Tyler Automotive. They take vehicles by appointment and promptly got me checked in and although I had submitted the form with what issues I was experiencing, I'm glad that they asked me again when I handed them my keys because I had remembered one more thing that I wanted them to look at. This is the first time that I have had a mechanic provide such detailed analysis of my vehicle. The technician sent me a link to review where I could see a breakdown of different parts and their status. Following this, the technician gave me a call to go over the breakdown and answer any questions I had. He gave me his advice on what needed to be addressed immediately. They ordered a part which took a few days to arrive and had my vehicle ready right when they said it would be ready. I highly recommend these guys and will be bringing my vehicle here next time I have an issue. read more

Called for potential service but was told that there'd be a $150 diagnostic fee. I figured the diagnostic fee would roll into the the repair. I'm glad I asked, because I was told that it would be added to the total. I didn't pursue the repair with them for that reason. I'm not sure why anyone would opt for this place given that diagnostic fee structure, which is practically what the dealership does. I've been going to Tyler automotive for years - in fact, we have taken four cars there over the last several years. However, ever since they built the new building, I feel like they have become much more of a money grab - took my car there for a battery change - I could tell you it was a battery just by the age and the corrosion on the battery itself - they wanted to charge me a $75 diagnostic fee and then told me a portion would be applied if I got a new battery but not the entire fee. Additionally, for battery change they said it might take me a week - the whole point of coming there is that my battery is not working in my car won't start. Took it across the street and they changed it the same day. Has Tyler gotten too big for its britches? read more

they charged me for new wheel speed sensor and did not diagnose the failing brake actuator. If you have a Prius or other hybrid with ABS/brake problems, avoid this shop -- they aren't equipped for hybrid brake diagnostics. read more

I towed in a 98 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 5.9 L v8. Truck would not start and I'd already replaced the ignition coil. I knew it had either a spark issue or a fuel delivery issue but I don't have test equipment to diagnose between the two issues. The shop was able to get me right in which was great. When they called with an estimate, they quoted $900 for diagnostics, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and distributor rotor. I was surprised that the $150 diagnostic fee was included in the quote because usually if you have the ship make the repair, that fee is waived. That was not offered to me. The high price was so unexpected that I asked for a breakdown of costs. They wanted $250 to change spark plugs plus the $150 diagnostic fee. I asked why it was so expensive and they told me that it was a non standard engine so they tripled the labor cost expecting it to take a long time. This engine is a very straightforward v8. They also told me that the mechanic felt like he would need to change plug wires, distributor cap and rotor to get a full spark. I asked if they would just change the plugs and see if that was enough to fix the truck rather than replacing everything. They initially said they would but then changed their minds and said they wanted to do all the work or I could tow it somewhere else. I paid the $150 diagnostic fees and towed the truck home. I spent $60 on spark plugs and replaced the plugs in about an hour (outside in 18 degree weather). The spark plugs looked fine as there was no corrosion and the insulation was in good shape. The truck started up immediately. The person I spoke to was very professional and nice about the situation but I was left feeling like the costs were exorbitant and they wanted to replace parts that didn't need replaced. The professionalism of the person who helped me is the only reason I didn't leave 1 star. read more

I routinely do maintenance to my car myself, unless the weather doesn't agree or I'm feeling lazy and affluent, or the task is beyond my temperance (takes too long. My cut off is around 3 hours). As far as I can tell, my thermostat on my van is stuck open and has been stuck open for probably 7 years. I have been ignoring it, but I recently decided to get a new OBDII reader and try it out on my vehicle. It gave me a few codes, a few of which suggest to me that a sensor needs to be replaced, but also one suggests the thermostat needs to be replaced -- which, as I mentioned above, I've know for a few years. Anyway, I'm giving the vehicle to my son, it's pretty cold outside, and I have the money to address it so I figured I'd give Tyler's a shot. I scheduled an appointment using their website, telling them I wanted the thermostat changed. This morning I brought the vehicle in for that change. Now, the thermostat for my vehicle runs between $20 and $50, depending on the quality you purchase. The vehicle is 13 years old, so I generally err on the side of cheap -- after all, how much longer is it even going to be on the road? The thermostat is located at the top of the engine, and replacing it means you'll wind up having to drain maybe a gallon of antifreeze, though everyone wants to incorporate a complete replacement of antifreeze; you know, because we have nothing better to do than to figure out how to recycle more antifreeze. So, despite having identified the problem, and telling Tyler the specific symptoms, along with the associated error code, Tyler told me upon dropping the car off they would be running a $150 diagnostic. Now, I get that most people come in with no idea what is wrong with their car, and Tyler doesn't want to be blamed with creating more problems. But I also get that the diagnostic is a wonderful up-sell tool for a garage. I mean, it reported that my wipers were old. I mean, thanks, but I'm the guy whose been driving the car so I know this. Nonetheless, the diagnostic is normally waved when the worked is approved, so it didn't bother me too much. After all, I knew there was maybe an hour of work and a gallon of antifreeze and a thermostat to go into the car. I estimated the price to likely be around $200. Tyler called me and quoted somewhere in the area of $330. I reminded them that I was $150 into this and asked for an hour to think it over. During that time I got a Pep Boys quote, which came out about the same, so Tyler was charging me not what it would actually cost plus a reasonable profit, but what their competitors would charge. Which, I suppose, might make sense, if their monthly expenses were the same as Pep Boys, which doesn't operate out of an old gas station, but out of a brick facade strip mall. But I had a question. Something about this automatic charge of $150 for them to learn what they could up-sell didn't sit right with me as I told them what the problems were and what I explicitly wanted replaced when I made the appointment. When Pep Boys does a diagnostic, but you wind up getting them to repair it, they waive the diagnostic fee. At know time did Tyler say they'd wave that fee. I called Tyler back and told them to pull my car out of the garage, and that I'd decided against the repair. They gave no objections, and said notion about waiving the fee. An hour later I called Tyler's back and asked if I did the repair with them, would they waive the diagnostic fee. They told me that they would not. So, Pep Boys, which would seem to have higher overhead given their location, does actually charge ~$330 for the repair, while Tylers actually charges ~$480 for the repair -- charging me that extra $150 despite me telling them exactly what I wanted done. Now, if I decide I want the work done, why would I go back to Tyler? By adding the diagnostic fee instead of waiving it, they create no benefit to whatsoever to having them do the work. Some might say, "it's cold outside and a thermostat that's stuck open doesn't keep you as warm in the vehicle" and while that's true, I've already lived with it like that for 7 years. I can reschedule elsewhere. I get the reason shops charge a diagnostic fee, and the reason they waive it. This tack on Tyler's part seems like nothing short of greed. Pep Boys: ~$330. Tylers: ~$480 (with a mandatory $150 starting place). read more

I have lived in the Broad Ripple area for a couple of decades now, and I have on multiple occasions used Tyler Automotive for repairs. I was impressed with their service during my early years in Broad Ripple. However, it seems like management changed at some point, a few years back. Much of the mundane vehicle maintenance I perform myself. I often replace brakes as needed, or an alternator, or just the serpentine belt. On one occasion I had more money than time so I decided to just let Tyler do the work. I don't recall what the work was, but I do recall it involved removing the wheels. A few months later I found myself having to pull the wheels off again, perhaps to replace a brake caliper, I don't recall. However, I could not remove some of the lug nuts. I would up putting a fence pole on a ratchet to unloosen a nut, but the ratchet instead bent. I took the vehicle back in to Tylers to have them loosen the nuts for me. The manufacturer called for nuts torqued to 100 ft lbs. For those who don't know what that means, it means it should take precisely 100 pounds on the end of a 1 foot long lever to loosen those nuts. That's so even a little woman can hop on the lug wrench and loosen the nuts. Tyler management told me they tightened them so much to "avoid liability". I appreciate this concern, but if they are torqued to the manufacturer's specs, then it's the manufacturer who has the liability! What they did was to simply torque them as tight as they could, giving no thought to the possibility of my wife being stuck in the middle of nowhere and having a tire to change. It was irresponsible. Nonetheless, what they did is actually rather common, so it didn't immediately disappoint me. read more

My son had an issue with his engine where it needed to be replaced. He had a warranty on his car which told him to take it to any licensed dealer which he did. They tore down his engine and recommended a fix which was all covered by the warranty without disclosing their policy on remanufactured parts. When the warranty company said they would fix it and provide the parts with no liability to Tyler automotive they declined to fix it. They have a shop policy that they will only replace parts from their supplier. Now they're charging my son 1300 dollars in diagnostic fees and declining to replace the engine provided by the warranty company. Do not recommend. I forgot to mention, we have it in writing from the warranty company that we provided to Tyler Automotive that they would not be liable for any issue from the warranty provided parts read more

All 3 of our cars have now checked out the mechanics here at Tyler. I heard it from a friend who has all his work done here, that work is good and it's done at a fair price. Well most auto mechanic work can be expensive, I do feel the prices here are fair. My experience has been that they look at the car the same day I bring it in and they call to let me know how much and when it will be ready. It has always been pretty quick. On this last visit, I made an appointment because they were busy around Thanksgiving. I cannot imagine waiting for a car repair, but they do have a nice little spot to wait. Better would be walking across the street to Glendale shops and look around at stuff. I have never had anything short of a great experience at this family run shop. They are efficient and quick, even when I'm an idiot and knock my right side mirror off. Not only did they get me the best price possible on a replacement, but they also were able to get me in that day to get the mirror replaced. I can tell they really look out for loyal customers. Once again Tyler Automotive doesn't disappoint. Went in for what we expected to be a flat tire due to this winter pot holes disaster. Learned the flat tire was a bit more serious and required a part be ordered. Not able to be without a car for the time required for delivery, they replaced the valve part with a temporary under the condition we would return once the part arrived and they could do a proper repair. Days later, part in hand, the authorized repair was made and car was good as new. The cost was nominal and the honest service was wonderful. Tyler does all of our car repair work. Looking for a local automotive repair shop that is actually HONEST and won't rip you off? This is a great spot. My wife and I take both our cars here and have never been disappointed. They've always done an exceptional job of explaining what the problem was, why it needed to be fixed and how much it would cost. They've also told me on several occasions that I didn't need certain repairs at that time, instead of most other repair shops who would tell you that you need something fixed when you really don't. Schedule your appointment early. Chances are it will take a week before they can get you in (apparently lots of other people trust Tyler Auto as well). They seem to be honest, and will gladly answer all of my questions. I'm surprised Tyler Automotive hasn't got a ton of Yelp comments. This place is fantastic. They owner has a degree from MIT in automotive science and they don't pick your pocket. My husband went in with "my brakes need work, maybe it's more than brakes" this left him open to them saying "yup, you need brakes and this and this" but they didn't. He just needed the brakes, they just repaired the brakes and we were on our way the same day! If you can spare your vehicle, just leave it and they'll do the work quickly when they have time. If you need an appointment, it's weeks down the road for these guys. I want to note that the price for the work was great too. No more than the place down the road that wanted to do quite a bit of extra unnecessary work on my daughter's car the week before. I'm really glad we found Tyler's! 11/19/12: Ok, a year later, I've down graded them from 5 stars to 3 stars. Partly because the guy in charge needs to develop some customer service skills. I have questions because I'm not a mechanic, I'm not stupid, I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm trying to understand my car. I still think overall the abilities of the mechanics are fine. Tony will never overcharge you, as a matter of fact, it almost seems like he is undercharging! One time we thought we needed a tune up, but he ended up calling us to tell us - nope, your care did not need one, and we paid for the oil change only. I had a breakdown Friday at noon before I was to travel Monday on Christmas Eve. They were going to try to check it out but would likely have to keep it until Wednesday after Christmas. Well they did check it out and it was repaired by 4:30 Friday and travelled well on Monday. I had it towed there because there positive reviews in my Neighborhood app had them above 100 likes, beyond double their nearest competitor. I can tell they've earned and deserve their good reputation. They diagnosed the problem, a drive shaft sensor (I think) and repair cost I'm sure was very reasonable compared to recent similar work I thought needed dealership attention. Well, goodbye poor dealership service and cost. I'll see Phil at Tyler Automotive for all my auto needs. read more
