Decent pintxos, good lunch, but not the most memorable spot. We stumbled into Txirimiri while wandering around El Born looking for a quick lunch. The place had a welcoming vibe, and pintxos were on offer, so we figured why not? Overall, it was a good lunch, but the selection of pintxos was pretty limited - not nearly as robust, creative, or flavorful as a few other places we'd tried earlier in the week across town. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out either. Service was okay - efficient but not particularly warm or engaging. You definitely get the sense this is a spot that sees a lot of tourists, and the staff may be a little weary of that constant flow. At the table next to us, a group of fellow American travelers were all eating burgers and fries... which kind of summed it up. Pintxos are tapas prepared the Basque way and are an expression of 'miniature cuisine'. The Basques call their tapas pintxos, (pronounced peench-os) from the Spanish word pinchar, meaning 'to prick'. Banderillas,or long toothpicks, which get their name from the darts in a bullfight, hold it all together, and you normally pay per pick. WE were on a 'pintxos hunt', and we not only started, but stopped at Txirimiri. Txirimiri was located down the street from our hotel, located in the El Born neighborhood. Literally brick and mortar, this old-style cafe was warm and woody. Our first visit was in the early afternoon. The family was just coming in with the kids for an early lunch. We were welcomed and served immediately. The best part: Queensryche, Quiet Riot, AC/DC...this is our kind of place! Quick breakfast: Tortilla de patatas bravas: These tortillas are not like flour or corn tortillas we have learned to know from Mexico and the southwest. This delicious recipe is a spanish omelette with patatas bravas (potatoes in cayenne sauce). Amazing. Side of pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato). Yum. Return visit, same day, pintxos time! We were recognized, seated, welcomed famously. The bartender treated us like family. He chatted with us about the restaurant, their love of American rock music, family, and about us. By night's end, they were streaming Mr. P's rock band across the bar! We of course ordered another tortilla de patatas bravas. But the star of the show was the pintxos! Glorious skewered snacks lined the top and bottom of the bar. There was no "service side". The bartender told us to "get back [there] and get the food"! Txistorritas, Navarra spicy sausage. Pernil (ham) croquettes. Pebrots farcits (peppers stuffed with squid and ink). Quail eggs. Cheeses. Potato. Peppers. Anchovies. I could not get enough of this place! Mr. P also took a keen liking to the cervesa de la casa, San Miguel. We left there family. We got lots of hugs and double-cheeked kisses. We got there too early for the pintxos service, but when leaving we saw the huge pintxos being set out. No wonder this place is popular. Instead, we had 2 spanish beers and a ham & cheese sandwich and txistorra sandwich made with those great crusty rolls that you see all over Barcelona. Cost only 12 €. Cheap!! Totally recommend because it is not one of those ripoff tourist joints advertising "tapas" and then serving something that looks more like chicken McNuggets. This is serious pintxo-ville. This little hole in the wall was a gem! It had a huge menu but we didn't order from it. Instead we ordered from the huge selection of pintxos (tapas on top of bread with a toothpick) sitting on top of the bar! The pintxos had different variations of cured meats, cheeses, anchovies, spreads, olives, and peppers and were absolutely delicious! We tried every single one with beer and left absolutely stuffed. Our favorites included one with a mountain of cured meats on it and one with a delicious green spread. The bill only came to about $40. If looking for a fun food experience, I definitely recommend coming here, ordering a beer at the bar, and just grabbing whatever pintxos look good to you. This is an awesome place for lunch, dinner or drinks. Great food and great prices, if not, the best prices I've seen for a tapas/burger bar so far in Barcelona. I ordered a burger with a drink from the value menu (*on during certain times), €5.50 total. Burger had an egg, caramelized onions, cabbage or lettuce (not sure), and a beef patty. Burger was tasty and very juicy. It also came with ketchup, mustard, and mayo packets if you want to add it to the burger. The beer was also tasted great. I'm not sure which one the waiter served but it was light coloured and translucent. Servers were very nice and helpful. The only thing that I wasn't sure about was the beef patty because it was a bit pink in the middle (In Canada, beef patties have to be fully cooked or else you could get sick) but maybe that's how you cook it in Spain. read more

Words fail to describe this place. It is so bad. I ate the worst meal ever at this restaurant. Not the worst in Barcelona or Spain or Europe. The worst anywhere. Liver pate came from a can in the form of a slimy cylinder covered in white fatty gook. Next dish baccala (cod) was enveloped in light green slime, had a mushy, gluey texture and a faint taste of dish detergent. The pièce de résistance duck came sliced on a bed of unappetizingly looking potato and mushroom mash, which was so salty it burnt my tongue. I assume that extra salt was added by "the chef" deliberately to mask some other foul flavor and to anesthetize my mouth in preparation for the duck. The sliced bird was done in the sashimi style. It was basically raw and bloody. Yet it was so chewy it must have hatched when Franco was still alive. It had a deep unpleasant flavor of something other than duck. Without thinking, I ate a few slices. The next morning I came down with severe food poisoning. For the remaining two days in Barcelona, I could not even look at food without gagging. I drank water, ate plain bread and swore at myself for not walking out the moment liver from a can made its appearance. read more

Plus it's always fun to banter back in fourth in my broken spanish with the bartender. to taste:] The tapas on the display are called "Pinchos" they are small bit-sized portions served on top of bread. each case has a variety of some sort so be adventurous and try the appealing ones first and always finish with a briny fish topped one. the situation is self serve for the pintxos, your tab is kept by how many skewers you have on your place, eat away and drink up! The sangria is a beautiful dusty mauve color, spicy, refreshing, and lovely following hours in the sun. In true Spanish/Catalan fashion we finished with a cafe con leche. In a new eating environment , we were confused of how the establishment works but it started of right when the waiter opened a new room for us to watch the World Cup. The fact that my friends and I came here for dinner for three nights out of our stay should tell you a lot. Such a cool set up, dark wood, open restaurant area with bar seating and multiple tvs showing world cup games... yeah... we loved this place! They have amazing self serve tapas for 1.50 euro each, which they keep track of by the number of sticks left on your plate. We ate SO MUCH FOOD and drank SO MUCH WINE (well, to be fair, I was drinking vodka, which is pronounced WODKA, and no... they really won't understand if you say vodka) and we only paid 20 euro each.
