I've always wanted to visit a pintxos bar and was shopping in the El Born neighborhood. I stubbled upon Euskal Etxea and arrived right as they opened and got a table immediately. They take your drink order and you are given a plate. Everything is self serve by going up to the bar and grabbing the pinxtos that you want. Most of them have toothpicks which you save and the waiter counts them at the end. They are $2.95 euros each. I love this concept and the food! A lot of their pinxtos were served on a crostini. Everything at the bar was cold like smoked salmon, anchovies, pickled peppers, goat cheese, tartlets, etc. A waiter did come around once in a while with a hot offering of croquettes and a mini hamburger with caramelized onions. Love that they had hot and cold varieties to choose from. If you are interested in having a small snack or even eating a lot this is a great place to try a variety of bites. We came here for the Basque style pincho bar. Once arrived, we got a standup spot and waited a few minutes for a table. I started with a Txakoli which goes very well with the different pinchos. Later, the waitress recommended a cider which is also common at pincho bar. It was like a sour beer and not very sweet. They had a good selection of pinchos. The staff will bring the freshly made items to the tables before putting them at the bar. All that we tried were yummy. My favorite was the steak. I had to get a second one. We stopped in for a quick bite to eat since we did not have lunch that day. It was across the street from the ceramics store that I had wanted to return to and the reviews online were pretty good. You essentially get seated, given a plate, and then buffet style the pintxos. Pintxos are small, skewered appetizers typical to the area. This was honestly a lot of fun. It was great just picking out what I wanted since I am a very visual eater. The waitresses would also sometimes walk around with fresh pintxos from the kitchen. We picked a few off those plates, and they were definitely worth it. The price wasn't too expensive either and we were full until our very late dinner that night. read more

This Basque restaurant comes highly recommended from a trusted local. The recommendation is right on target. It is in the Vella Ciudat which has a lot of tourist places and a lot of young people hang out and get plowed places. But Euskal Etxea is the real deal. One mark of its real dealness. Hidden in the back is a Basque Social Center. You, the foreigner, are not allowed in. This is members only. Inside, they have pinxtos that they don't have outside. There are lots of Basques hanging out there. But the exterior restaurant is designed to pay the bills for the Social Club. They do a fine job of making the food so amazing That outsiders really WILL come through the door and pay the bills for the Social Club. For food this good, I will pay the bills for just about anyone. * * * We had a full three course sit down dinner rather than pintxos. Pinxtos (Basque appetizers on a stick) are wonderful stuff. I could eat 6000 of them. But serious sitdown Basque eating is major major good eating. It is hard for me to turn down a serious Basque meal. * * * Not everything was wonderful. Absolutely positively skip the squid with black ink. The cook deviates from standard classic Spanish/Basque formulas ... Basque food is always special and this place does a perfect representation of it. We went to the restaurant as where you need to order from menu. Even though pintxos are the star of the show, all plates were truly amazing. They give you complimentary chistorra, a tasty way to start the meal. We got the piquillo with crab, the albóndigas and the gorilla with anchoas which was nothing like the tortillas we have tried before. This has to be one of my favorite Barcelona restaurants! I was giving up on finding good food/tapas that was not deep-fried. Its Basque food. Love the small pieces of food with toothpicks. You go up to the counter and pick up what you want and they charge you per toothpick - about 2€ per pintxos. The waiter will also come by at your table every five minutes with a new offering. It's really good food and an amazing experience a must visit when you're in Barcelona! My total bill with about 8 pieces, 2 beers and desert came to 26€ Super friendly and attentive staff. read more

Pintxos, pintxos, pintxos! Swung by Euskal Etxea for a quick snack while sightseeing in Barcelona. It's an ideal spot to take a break from all the walking, and refuel with some bite sized snacks and coffee/beer. During lunch time the restaurant has an open front room with platters of pintxos and bar seating for folks to pick their bites. As a place to have a few beers with friends, this place is really good. As a place to just eat, it leaves a lot to be desired. First it offers bite sized goodies which are a version of tapas with a generous influence, as far as preparation is concerned, from sushi. The whole idea is very good, it's a busy place and it is not hard to get plenty of food whilst yakking and having a few drinks. However, many of the foods are presented on a bed of bread, and pastry cups. On this night, the bread was stale and the pastry cups were soft. It was a Tuesday night but it was still very busy and there was no reasonable excuse for the bases of the finger foods to be so disappointing. However, the people we went there with said this was not normally the case. Maybe we will try it again when next we are in Spain. Maybe not. read more

Quite possibly the best pinxtos in Barcelona and they are BUSY. We stopped by one night and the place was standing room only, which means they kept cranking out fresh pinxtos. For the uninitiated, pinxtos are small bites (usually on baguette slices) and Euskal Etzea had plenty to choose from. Grab a plate, load up on what looks good, and count up the number of toothpicks on your plate at the end. Each one runs about 2 euros and they're like a small party in your mouth. I dedicated a whole afternoon to finding the best pintxos in Barcelona. Although these were the only ones I had while I was there, the flavor combinations were so awesome. This restaurant is Basque, and has a full menu but also plates on plates of pintxos at the front of the restaurant that are self serve. It's a la carte and they count your toothpicks (there's a toothpick holding together each pintxo) at the end and charge you per piece. Around 2 Euro per pintxo? My server was so nice (and handsome) and explained all the different pintxos to me, all sorts of meats and cheeses, hot and cold ones. I picked 4 per his recommendation, all so fantastic. He also suggested a basque cider for me to taste, it was not as sweet as the ciders I'm used to in the US, but so refreshing with my pintxos. The tables in the front are high tops and really easy to hang out in, I read some local newspapers and I enjoyed my meal, and the server checked in with me multiple times to make sure I was having s great experience. When I hear my friends say they're going to Spain, this restaurant is among my MUST SEEs in Barcelona! Awesome food, amazing service. read more

I'm always forgetting the name of this place! Dang! I have no idea how to pronounce the name (help!).Seriously one of the most memorable parts about my visit to Barcelona. Very limited seating if you're able to grab a table. Mostly tall tables where you have to stand and eat (so not a great spot if you've been walking/on your feet all day). There are a few tall stools if you're able to snag some. This was the only pintxos bar that we went to while in Barcelona. Pintxos are small snacks typically eaten in bars. Each side of the corner where the pintxos are displayed is the same so no worries on fighting your way to the other side if you're only able to get to one side of the corner. Price: 2€ per stick We loved the concept of pintxos as you can see the food and just grab it yourself. The food itself was decent but there wasn't anything there that we all tried that we absolutely loved. The house sangria was fairly watery and tasted more like juice. The only time you really see a waiter is when they take your drink order & when you pay. They bill you by counting how many sticks you have on your plate so that's why you don't have your plates cleared away when you have a stack full. On our recent trip to Barcelona our hotel recommended Euskal Etxea for pintxos. We had been disappointed not to find pintxos bars in the Bari Gotic area given the commercial changes to that area since our last trip 10 years ago. Euskal is in the Born area near the Picasso Museum. It was quite busy but we quickly got plates and beverages. The selection was limited but everything we tried was very good. The restaurant is quite small with counters around the perimeter and stools to enjoy your pintxos selections. The restaurant also has a small area in the back with tables where dinner is served. After we finished enjoying we took our plates to the bar where our toothpicks were counted and we our bill was tallied. Each pintxos was 2.10€. If you are looking for traditional pintxos I'd recommend trying this place. read more

Fun, self-serve pintxos spot near the Picasso Museum! Like most of the restaurants on the street, Euskal Etxea Taberna was packed when we got here, but my family was luckily able to snag some seating. The staff was friendly and the food options were aplenty. Grab a plate and fill it up with pintxos! Take bites of other people's and make your way up for round two. Don't forget to save the toothpicks! Although the food wasn't mind-blowing, we had a good time and were ready for our adventures around the Picasso Museum. I gave this place 5 stars because of the relaxed air and wide selection of tapas. Our 2nd day in Barcelona started as a rainy wet day, and we were hoping to get into the Picasso Museum. We'll, the lines to see Pablo were extrely long, so we snuck into Euskal to wait out the rain. What a lucky break!! Food was great and covered us for Brunch. We were in touch with the rest of our party who were flying in from the US. Staff was very warm and casual and helped us with tapas selections for first-timers. Very good tapas bar in Barcelona Gothic area. This was suggested to me by a local and glad I came. You come in, grab a plate and pick individual "pinxtos" items. These are small slices of toasted bread LOADED with all sorts of things. Some are pork, some are seafood, some vegetarian. A very good variety. At about 2 Euros each, you can really enjoy a wide variety of flavor. Since each is only 2 or 3 bites, you can't go wrong -- even if you don't particularly care for the pinxtos (i.e. seafood). If you're not sure what the ingredients are, there are waiters and staff nearby to help you. When you're done. they see how many toothpicks are on your plate and charge you accordingly. Tasty treats line the bar and sometimes appear on trays from the kitchen carried by waitstaff. Let me begin by saying that Croquetas de Jamon are one of my favorite things in the world and the ones they serve here are now my favorite, favorite things in the world! I could basically write this whole review just about their croquetas, crispy on the outside and sooooo creamy on the inside with bits of ham, heavenly! There were so many other tasty delights, all fresh and made with real care. We had a great house white which went perfectly with our tasty tidbits. Boquerones and peppers on sticks with anchovies were really good too as were the sausages and the bocaditos. 2 Euros for each toothpick with a grand total of 60 euros for four people with wine. Very casual pinchos bar in the old part of town. The honor code system here works like this: you find a high top table or lean up against the bar in the back, the waitress gives you some plates and takes your drink order and then you head to the bar in order to select which pinchos you want and you keep the toothpicks as a method of being charged. They are recycling the pinchos every now and then so don't worry if your favorite runs out, they'll have more in a few minutes. Good for groups and for a stop to grab a beer and hang out. I loved this spot. It was packed, you grab a spot anywhere you can at the standing room only bar (there might have been a few tables, actually), and grab yourself some pintxos. Then, when you're done, they count up your sticks and charge you for what you ate. I found it to be really inexpensive. And, while most of it was seafood based, we had a couple of lovely ones...some kind of cheese with I think quince, tortilla, some other stuff that to be honest, I totally don't remember. Anyhow, I liked the idea, I liked the atmosphere, I liked the close proximity to our pad, and I liked the guy that brought us the drinks, Leo. Bonus points for being right next to the Picasso Museum and self service, but don't think you're going to get blown away by the best tapas that Barcelona has to offer.
