Guerline J.

I visited this pub on a Friday for lunch with my girlfriends. We arrived right at 11:30 when they opened, so it was empty initially, but it quickly started filling up, showing that this is a popular spot. The menu offers a variety of pub-style dishes, and we decided to start with wings, truffle fries, and mussels. The wings were tasty, though I did encounter one that wasn't fully cooked. Aside from that, everything was delicious. For drinks, I tried the French 75 and the Sun-gria, both of which were light and refreshing. For my main course, I had the BBQ Beef Brisket Melt, which came with caramelized onions, cherry pepper aioli, and chihuahua cheese. I swapped the pretzel bun for a regular bun and substituted the chips for French fries. The brisket was well-seasoned and full of flavor. Our server was incredibly sweet and accommodating, though I can't recall her name. Overall, the atmosphere and music were great, and the prices were reasonable--about $20-$30 per person. I'd definitely visit again the next time I'm in Middletown, Delaware.

Fish tacos and Jamaican style sweet potato fries
Beverly R.

Had lunch here Saturday Nov 2, 2024. It wasn't crowded, that should have been a clue. I had fish tacos jerk style, they were ok, very small pieces of fish. Jamaican style sweet potato fries were good. My daughter had the chopped Sante Fe salad, the bottom of the bowl was full of water. We told the waitress, she didn't care. We didn't make a fuss, just won't return.

Such a mixed review & experience. We made reservations for Sunday brunch and glad we did as the…read moreplace got crowded quickly. On one hand I want to try again for dinner but for the price, I'm not sure it's worth it. Pros: Amazing service - very attentive server(s); we had one in training/shadowing and she was just as good as our primary server, offering refills, clearing plates, overall greet banter Cocktails are fantastic - had the Minnie Ripperton and loved it - creamy yet refreshing and bright which is a tough combo to achieve Cons: Hidden entrance - after circling what looked like an abandoned building 2x we finally figured out the entrance was in the backy and down a set of stairs. I now understand the "speakeasy vibe" but the clutter in the front made the building look abandoned or under construction; not a great start to the experience for us Food service - the other couple we were dining with got their entrees about 10 minutes before ours and we were some of the first orders & diners of the day. Usually you might hold the whole table or refire some of the dishes so it all comes out at the same time. They finished theirs before we even got our to start, making it a strange eating experience Small print menu - with the low light of the speakeasy, the menu had the teeeeniest print I've ever seen making it very difficult to read the menu options. We also didn't realize that the menu changes/is seasonal (not called out on the website) so many of the items we had wanted to try were not an available option. I love a menu that changes but hope it's indicated on the website (aka: sample menu, subject to seasonal change) Hit-n-miss: Fried chicken Benedict- huge portions, amazing biscuits and perfectly poached (but unseasoned?) eggs. I don't know if the hollandaise soaked into the fried chicken or never existed at all - and that's the thing you want with a Benedict. If it existed, it never reached the biscuits because while they were good, but were completely dry Shrimp and grits - perfectly cooked, great consistency, but very under-seasoned Water - just an observation and maybe it's just the local tap water flavor but it tasted off or as off the soap hadn't been washed from the glasses Pro Tip: be aware of the automatic gratuity in some circumstances; if you don't know, check the website before your meal!

The renovations done are outstanding. The staff was plentiful and attentive. Four of the cheaper items on a limited menu were not available. Items ordered: The Seafood Pasta which was a little overpriced and had way too much pepper. It was almost returnable. The Boar Meatball which was very good. It could have used a small bed of pasta and/or some bread. Too expensive when you consider you only get one meatball for $19. The Korean BBQ Tacos comes with two tacos and no sides for $22. Way overpriced. Did order a side of French Fries which was $4.

Our waitress, Linda, greeted us and took our drink orders right away. She was very patient as I asked a bunch of questions about the menu. Our dinner arrived quickly and it was yummy! I had the fried fish, which came with a delicious Old Bay tartar sauce. The fries were so plentiful that neither one of us could finish them. My only (minor) complaint was that it was difficult to eat the fish in the basket it arrived in, as the paper and wire made it hard to get the flaky fish. But the food was great! A live acoustic guitar player came midway through our meal and although he played right next to us, we were able to continue to have a conversation. The decor is nice and it is divided by a hallway which makes the place feel cozy, although there seems to be plenty of seating. We will return!

Looking through the glass panes in their door at the bottom of the steps leading to the back yard and C & D Canal, it appeared that the lights were off and that it wasn't open for business at 3:00 p.m. The door wasn't locked, so I opened it to step inside to try for a better look. It was then I saw a woman behind the bar who appeared to be setting up for business. She also saw me and asked if she could be of service. I asked if the place was open? She explained that it was, and she would be happy to make me a cocktail, however, they rarely had customers this time of day midweek, and that if I was hungry the restaurant above would certainly be happy to take care of me. The conversation continued briefly as she explained the two businesses had a common owner and shared a kitchen with a slightly different, but mainly overlapping menu. The large dining room next door was shared, although there were several tables in the shadows as well as a few barstools. The darkness seemed appropriate; like a cave where many things could be hidden from view and likely to instill a sense of secrecy and even conspiracy, for example, a perfect stop for the Underground Railroad or a speakeasy during Prohibition. Realizing I was taking up her time, and that she had better things to do than listen to a stranger's fantasies, I excused myself and exited the door I had just entered. She smiled and nodded, as she continued wiping the glassware in preparation for the night's guests.

The bar tender was very nice, very courteous . Then the issues began to emerge. Keep in mind what time it is and there are only 6-7 people in the bar. The men's bathroom was filthy. Like there was excrement on the wall, trash cans over flowing and toilet paper on the wall, stuck to it. All over the floor. The bar tender said something to the manager and the excuse was that it was the bait parade the night before. They have had over 12 hours to clean the bathroom. The nachos were absolutely gross. Poured cheese, 3 jalapeños, cold chicken. Two years ago it was a mix of cheese and smoked chicken, and delicious. I hope the owners read this and take note. Your saving money on cheap ingredients will lose clientele. A gross bathroom should have you shut down. Do better. You have a great location and a special little bar.

I appreciate the happy Buddah statue decor near the entrance; it give the palce a unique and fun flare. The TVs around Us were showing video games and poker which was great for me since I don't really watch sports. They are also doing a food drive since I saw a box with cans in it. Not sure how long they're doing it though. As I took a look at the menu - at first glance it seems like a standard American bar menu with burgers, fries, nachos, salads, wings, and sandwhiches, but upon further reading I noticed the ingredience are a bit diffrent. This is where it really stands out. Subtle changes to some classic foods really shines at this place. Example: PeeBee & Jay Burger/Dirty Kettle Chips Overall we had a pleasant experience at this place and really feels like we could be regulars. Service is good, food is good, drinks, good, and portion sizes are excellent. (2) Alcoholic beverages, (1) appitizer, and (2) entrees. Bill came out to about $61. (Not including tip) Shout out to our server JASON. He was very attentive, we watched him keep that same energy with the other tables around us. Very honest and knowledgeable about the menu. Helped us pick items on the menu, gave us really accurate descriptions of the foods and drinks. Great personality energy and helpful, Drinks: beer and seasonal sangria (good) Food: Caribbean Sweet Potato Fries - We ordered a small, the portion size was great to share for twc people. The jerk sauce gives the fries a spicy kick to them which is a slow build up the more you eat. The salsa was great and really balanced out the spice, 1 appreciate the quality of mangos being just perfect (not too tarte or super sweet). Sweet potatos weren't very sweet but that was fine with me since I generally don't eat sweet potatos. These were propbably the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. Fish Tacos with a side of garden salad with Herb Vinegrett dressing - Fish Tacos were good. the sauce was spicy, a lot spicier than I expected. Fish was well fried and good size. It didn't have a fishy taste to them so it felt fresh. The Herb Vinegrett dressing was sooooo goooood. I wish i had more of it. I can't even describe it other than it was so good. Chopped Santa Fe Salad with requested Jerked Chicken - Chicken was well cooked and juicy. Just the right amount of dressing and chicken. Ratio of sauce to salad was well balanced. Jerked chicken had its own flavor which added to the salad as a whole.Overall really good.

I love the mystery beer concept, its not great beer, but being from DC at like $2 a can, I am not passing that up, ever. And a cheap beer with a burger is the perfect combo! On to the burger... I have heard that this is a great burger... and I have to conclude that I agree though it is reminiscent of a Big Mac - just way better ingredients - it has to be the sauce they put on it... Anyway, nice size patty, good amount of toppings and a quality bun (not too soft, not too thick, bread soaks up some of the juices but doesn't fall apart). The mussels were quite excellent as well. It was a Thai curry broth the night we were there and it was drinkable, like soup... we did ask for extra bread... enough said. I am going to take a minute too and praise their spirit free cocktails. THIS IS HOW THEY SHOULD BE MADE. They used bitters, tonics, etc to craft something that tasted like a cocktail but without alcohol which means they were not sickly sugary concoctions, but expertly crafted beverages. Just really great options. All that said though, their espresso martini was one of the worst I have had. Just skip that.
