Oh Tuhamas, why did I doubt you in the first place. Came here with my friends for our monthly get together and our quest to find the best Middle Eastern in Dearborn. We had actually come here before, but elected to go elsewhere because we wanted wait service. Went to Al Ajami instead, and having been here, am upset that we made that choice. AMBIANCE- definite hole in the wall- you order your food and you grab a seat. Not too much seating (probably 15 people max), which explains why we saw so many people getting take out. They have a tv there that was playing a soccer match of some sort. Sorry, I don't get up for soccer. SERVICE- guy at the register took our order and seemed friendly enough. Since we were eating there, he said we could wait to pay until all of our food came out. Word. MENU- not as deep a menu as other Middle Eastern joints in Dearborn. They seem to focus more on sandwiches (which is what they are known for). They had a few combos, and appetizers, but not your typical 8 page menu. FOOD- I kept hearing that the chicken shwarma hear was THE BEST, so of course I had to check that out, along with a kafta sandwich. My friend rocked a falafel, and my two other friends got a chicken shwarma and a beef shwarma sandwich. I must say, their chicken shwarma was ON POINT. And I dare say it is the best I have had in Dearborn thus far. The kafta sandwich was ok, but not the best I've had. My friend enjoyed his falafel, but also preferred other places he had been. OVERALL- cheap, fast, and tasty- great combo for me. If you're looking to take someone out for a first date, don't come here (unless you're low on cash). Love the sandwiches here! Better than any other restaurant or Arab Bakery that serves pita wrapped sandwiches. I love that they give you more meat than the other places. I would recommend calling in your order first and it will be ready when you arrive, or be willing to wait about 15 to 20 mins for your order. My favorite recommendation is the Chicken Sharma! Had the Chicken Shawarma on French bread as recommended from another viewer and they were absolutely correct! The toasted French bread with garlic sauce, pickles and chicken was just phenomenal. Had the spicy Cajun fries on the side and a Pepsi and it completely rounded out my meal. Listen, I know they make some mean sandwiches but that doesn't give the cooks/manager/owner or whoever, the right to have a stick up their bottom when you're placing an order. It's a hole in the wall but that's what good fast food is like! Don't hesitate to pop in and if you are looking for good shawarma fast food, it is a must! The beef shawarma was excellent; like being in Lebanon at a fast food joint. Chicken shawarma was good and not perfect and hence my 4 stars rating. Chicken was just a bit dry but the garlic paste/sauce makes it, as always, and guess what, you can ask for fries which make it truly a Lebanese street chicken shawarma.... The shawarma meat is clean, tasty and spiced well, and the meat amount in the wrap is very generous. Loved their sandwich, although it's a little dry in the center, so it can use a bit more of the yummy grease/oil drippings from the shawarma spit. You can order a side of garlic sauce for dipping to moisten your bites. Be prepared tho, their toum is pretty spicy, though I like it that way so it didn't bother me. read more

This is a great little spot on Warren that cranks out delicious food. They have a few booths and there's usually soccer on TV, with a steady stream of regulars coming in and out with their called-ahead orders at lunchtime. Chicken shawarma is excellent, with soft pita bread and extra zesty garlic sauce. They aren't shy with it that's for sure. Tasty pickles inside too! The falafel was particularly excellent, with little soft green chickpea falafels wrapped up with a delicious tahini sauce. The falafels were really savory, with a slight bitterness that was lovely. They are wrapped pretty well so they don't totally fall apart when you eat them, although I would still recommend taking off your scarf because you never really know when tahini sauce will strike. Tongue and Brains are all good at Tuhamas, as in Lamb tongue sandwich and lamb brains sandwich. (Don't worry squeamish white-meat chicken eaters, read the other reviews...they apparently have great chicken shawarma) To deconstruct the very tasty lamb tongue sandwich: The bread - a cross between a baguette and a panini, hot pressed or grilled to crispy perfection Inside - tender, not very lamby, melt-in-your-mouth chunks of tongue meat swimming in garlic heaven, juicy turnip pickles along side the meat balance out the richness and creaminess of other ingredients with an added dimension. Also tasted lemon juice and black pepper. Just go and try it, your taste buds will thank you. Other stuff tried are also good (hummus is creamy smooth but not runny, falafel is one of the best!) Like Rodger, I am almost hesitant to write about this place for fear that Yelpers will descend upon in droves and crack the quality lid. (recent visits to Hamido has not been as good). After reading review after review of this 5-star shwarma oasis, i decided to finally venture out and try their legendary sandwiches. On my Tuhama quest i passed the place not once but twice...at which point i made a gigantic U-turn on Warren Ave (this is where my ghetto driving training kicks in) to park in the last available spot in front of the restaurant. Walking in, a small crowd of Tuhama patrons were eagerly waiting on their carry-out orders....pacing back in forth, watching the people behind the counter rolling, wrapping, and packaging the shwarmas, anxiously waiting to see if it was indeed THEIR order that was wrapped and ready to go. So far, a good sign! All this eagerness plus some consistent 5-star Yelp ratings, i was expecting to have a mind-blowing shwarmapalooza filled dinner! I placed my shwarma & kafta order at the counter, and after twenty five minutes of watching Al-Jazeera broadcasting a soccer game and the nightly news on the nearby TV, my order was FINALLY called....hallelujah! After another 25 minutes, i'm sitting at my kitchen table savoring each morsel of the very garlicky chicken shwarma. The garlic sauce danced a fine line between over the top/just enough. As for the lamb kafta, also great!!! Delicious, aromatic, and LOVED the fresh crunchy turnips and pickles. I usually take these out of my kafta sandwiches but these were fantastic, it added just enough tangy-ness and crunch to the sandwich! All in all, Tuhama's was "pretttttty pretttttty good!" -did you catch the Larry David reference? : P Just a couple side notes: 1.) You can dine at Tuhama's, but seating is limited. For weeks my friend Ali has been raving on this place, trying to get me to go for lunch and today I finally got the chance to go with him. He's been really talking it up, setting my expectations very high and I must say I was not disappointed. Based on Ali' recommendation, I ordered a Meat Shawarma sandwich and on my own I also ordered a Tawouk sandwich and a basket of fries. I sat down with this Meat Shawarma and bit into it and I was amazed. Ali told me to expect the best Meat Shawarma I'd ever eaten, but this sandwich went beyond this. It was the single best item of Middle Eastern food I've ever eaten, bar none. It didn't take too long to finish this sandwich, and I moved on to the Tawouk, wondering if it could live up to its predecessor. There's a certain something, a rare combination of pickle and chicken that some restaurants are trying to capture, and I've experienced many attempts that come close, but Tuhama's has found that perfect balance. All the flavors of the chicken, sauce, pickles and bread complement each other so well. Even the fries were excellent. Thanks, Yelp! Would not have noticed Tuhama's otherwise. The servings - plentiful. The chicken shawarma - so tender and flavorful. The pickles - were dripping with vinegar, like pickles should! This made me realize that my recent encounters with pickled turnips at some of the more touted restaurants down the road have been disappointingly dry. The hummus - creamy, garlicky, smooth (check, check, check) and pleasantly smoky (now that's a little different). The garlic sauce - best EVER! Full-flavored yet not overpowering. I tend to inhale this stuff, which can lead to intense stomachaches and other regrets. But just like the hummus, it's so smooth and palatable. I'd go so far as to call it medicinal! They gave us at least 8oz. I like mixing leftover garlic sauce with butter and spreading it over grilled fish. Even given my addiction to this stuff, I have plenty left for experimentation. read more

After reading all the great reviews for this place, I expected to be amazed by the food here. Yes, I was amazed...... that it did not live up to the hype. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma sandwich and a Fattoush salad. The sandwich was only ok. The only redeeming quality was the fact that it was packed with chicken...but tastewise, Golden Bakery has far better tasting chicken. The fattoush salad was abysmal. They used vinegar!!!!! Who uses white vinegar for Fattoush dressing?!? Fattoush is supposed to have a bright flavor which can only be achieved with fresh lemon juice and sumac. Vinegar is a cheap and mediocre substitute. A little background, I grew up in Dearborn, I've been eating Lebanese food for decades and Tuhama's does not live up to the hype here on Yelp. read more

I tried this place because of Yelp. I found some good, not as good, and "I wish": The good - the people are super nice. I liked that it is basically just a lunch counter with different sandwiches. Sometimes I don't want a waitress, so this would be a good place to stop. The hummus was very good, better than Hamido. They give you a large container of pickled raddish, tomato and peppers. They gave me a side of garlic without protest. Not as good - I thought the falafel sandwich was not quite as good as I've had elsewhere. Not bad, but just not AS good. My husband said the same about the chicken shwarma. I wish the menu was a little larger selection wise. The only sandwich I could order was falafel because I don't eat meat. They don't have rice. "I wish" - they would give more pita. The great hummus was quite large, but we only got two pieces of pita. It wasn't enough. Also, with an open kitchen they need to make sure that they aren't storing stuff on the floor (like onions)...it looks icky. Also, I wish there was lentil soup. Overall it was good. First time to Tuhama's last night and we don't understand the hype. There are much better sandwiches all over East Dearborn. We had a kafta and a tawook sandwich, both on French bread. We also had a side of fries and a drink and the total was only $14 so it's cheap....but that's the same or more than you'll pay all over Dearborn. We had to wait about 15 minutes for the sandwiches. There wasn't much meat on the tawook sandwich and the kafta on the other was over cooked and dry. The place is also extremely dirty-looks like it hasn't been properly cleaned in months. This place is known for its sandwiches and I went there after a Lebanese friend recommended it to me. Unfortunately, I'm gluten intolerant so I can't have pitas or bread. Instead, I ordered the shish kabob which was fantastic. It came with hummus, pickled turnip, and tomatoes. It would have come with pita as well but I asked them not to include one because it would just go to waste. The Arabic friend I went with ordered a hamburger which came with fries. We both enjoyed our food immensely. He said the meat in his hamburger was not like other hamburgers he had; it was more Arabic style. He said it was a good kind of different though. It was dingy but I thought made it very cozy and homey. All the customers seemed to know the owners and we were surrounded by Arabic conversation which is always a good thing when in an Arabic restaurant. I wish the menu was bigger and that they had rice and garlic sauce but considering how tiny the place is, I don't think it's very feasible. They were also lacking cups for water and I wasn't going to pay $2 for a bottle of water so that fact irritated me a bit. read more
