Falafel Plate
Katherine F.

Shamiat is a phenomenal Syrian restaurant that needs more attention from the community, I wish I could give them more than 5 stars! Their falafel is some of the best I have ever had, especially considering the competition in the area. As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted by one of the employees and a cook from the back (might have been the owner) brought us free samples of their delicious falafel to try while we ordered! This is a spot you CANNOT miss, I can't recommend it enough! Check out my Instagram for more @hangry_detroiter

If you're looking for authentic Syrian cuisine, @shamiatrestaurant is the place to be. The chef used to own a restaurant in Syria and be the chef there, so you know you're definitely getting authentic Syrian food. We tried many items from the menu, and my most favorite items were the falafel and the eggs with meat. These Syrian style falafel were made fresh to order. What sets them apart from the other style falafels is that these have a hole in them to ensure the falafel is properly cooked and has a crunchy texture on the outside and a softer texture on the inside. When you break into these falafel, they're more yellow in color and that's because they only use chickpeas, whereas other Middle Eastern falafels can be made with chickpeas and fava beans. Honestly the best falafel I've ever had. Definitely coming back for more. I highly recommend checking out this place if you're looking for an authentic and delicious breakfast/brunch. Their location, although it's small, is nicely decorated. They also plan on opening up a bigger location, so definitely follow @shamiatrestaurant to stay updated. They are 100% Halal. I assume there is a wait on weekends. Greeted by friendly staff quickly and offered a menu to pursue. Selections covered all the basic brunch items without being "too much." The ambience is warm and casual though ambient noise makes quiet conversation a challenge. Our server appeared to be newer and somewhat nervous so there was not much chitchat. Babo does not offer decaf coffee, a big disappointment. I settled for tea. The server was not aware of this decaf option until I asked. Our food came quickly although it was not super warm for either one of us. The syrup for the waffle was very cold, also a disappointment. Other than these two drawbacks, the flavors were wonderful and the pricing seems right in line for this area. Babo is a solid brunch choice in this are. We always look forward to our visits.

After going I am so sorry for not trying this restaurant sooner. It was such a great selection of breakfast and lunch items as well as a full bar and coffee selection. I went with friends so I was able to try several things. I highly recommend the breakfast smash it was a delicious Sammy on fresh grilled challah bread. I also really enjoyed the Shakshouka which I think was a seasonal dish. The service was great the server was very helpful with recommendations. The space is small so it is not the greatest for larger groups, but great for a party of 2-4 people. I would say this place is on the more expensive side for the amount of food but definitely worth checking out if you're in the mood for a good brunch spot.

I was searching for a Restaurant that Truly supports a GF person So many say they are yet ( pre read their menus and nada) This was a test visit for guests that ARE ABSOLUTELY GF. I called for a Reservation. Oops no same day Res, yet I was told there was one Res left for 12:30 ( if We didn't make it the wait would NOT be long. We were a bit late yet our table was waiting for Us... This is a cozy scratch kitchen restaurant with a Greenwich Village vibe. Table seating for 16 bar seating for 3 Yet it didn't feel crowded. We were asked if it was our 1st time? Yes. Menu was fully explained and even b4 I could ask I was told what was always prepared GF and for other dishes what could be substituted...I purposely chose the GF waffles. May I say AWESOME. I had 1 suggestion....add the Tart cherry crafted jam that came with my husband's biscuit as an additional add on with the syrup. with the waffles I blended syrup and jam and. Then my Latte. I asked for a Hot cup. It was creamy smooth. If You can't have dairy ( and they asked) there's options. I need not have worried; there was parking closer by. Oh well. The restaurant is tiny. And it maximizes the space by lining its walls with colorful bottles of wine, chic and cher containers of olive oil, and pots of artisanal honey hiding here and there. My friend pointed out the breathtakingly beautiful bouquet of dried flowers hanging over our table. I should have taken a photo when I had the chance. I started with the spiced brown sugar latte, made with oat milk. Delicious and sweeter than I thought. Even though the menu is small and curated, I could not decide between the nosh plate, the biscuit brekkie, or the quiche, which was the special of the day. So I ended up with the quiche but added the biscuit and bacon - I did not want to miss out. The crust of the quiche was fine, but the custard-like filling was divine, more like a savory crème brûlée or flan. Service was quick and efficient. Our reservation was made for one of the predefined 90-minute blocks, so the staff was on top of getting and delivering our meals and bussing tables as soon as they emptied to make room for the next group of guests.

We had another incredible dinner at Selden Standard, which will always be our number one restaurant…read morein Detroit. We even got married here this summer!! So it holds a special place for us. Lauren took great care of us and encouraged us to order whatever we were craving. Dangerous advice, but we happily accepted . Warning - the ratings are real. They're not a mistake. We started with our usual cocktail, the Instant Karma (5/5). It is the perfect balance of citrus and salt with a light cucumber note. Clean, refreshing, and it pairs well with everything. The roasted sweet potato (6/5) is one of the best vegetable dishes in the city. The caramelized exterior gives way to a soft interior, and the crispy quinoa adds a subtle light crunch that plays against the creamy texture. The salsa macha brings a smoky, nutty depth without the heat, and the crema ties it all together. I had to physically stop myself from scraping the plate (actually they had to take it away ). The tagliatelle (5/5) with beef bolognese and parmesan was flawless. The pasta has that ideal handmade chew, and the bolognese is rich without being heavy. The parmesan blends perfectly into the sauce and stands out in every bite. The potato pierogi (10/5) were the star of the night. Soft potato-filled pillows with horseradish crema, apple, and crispy shallot pieces create this perfect sweet, tangy, creamy, and crunchy bite. Each forkful felt intentional and balanced. I felt guilty, because in my head, I didn't want to share with my wife, but I did anyways . The cruelty of having to split an odd number of pierogis...well played...we should have just ordered another one. We also ordered the smoked potatoes and the pan roasted half chicken with sauce au poivre (always 5/5 for both) The smoked potatoes, with raclette, and crème fraîche, are always a must. These winter variation was just as good! The chicken remains one of the most consistently well-executed mains in the city. I have tried recreating it at home with the cold pan method and it never comes close. Every time we dine here, it feels like four or five different dinner experiences in one evening. Selden Standard continues to set the bar for us in Detroit. We love the staff, the food, and the memories tied to this place. Cheers to many more amazing years to come!

My husband surprised me with a birthday dinner here, and I'm glad that we got to experience it. We arrived in advance of our reservation and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender brought us a glass of wine while we waited. It took about a half hour, but we were shown to our table for the night and promptly greeted by our server. All of the food looked amazing, both on the menu and with what people were ordering at other tables. We chose a variety of dishes - cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, squid ink orecchiette, octopus, mushrooms, and scallops. I would recommend all of them, but the standouts for me were the Brussels sprouts and the scallops. Flavors were unique and textures were especially on point with those dishes. Service was good, but we both felt like it was slow. There was a slight glitch in the beginning of the night where the host stand didn't mark that we had checked in when we actually had, which probably contributed to the half hour wait at the bar. Aside from those points, it was an impeccable night!

I normally do not like breakfast burritos since I find them really dry, but the eggs were moist and tender and ditto for the tortilla. I had the sausage, and it was diced and mixed in with the other ingredients, but it was more of a processed sausage (maybe chicken?) with a bouncy texture. Western Potatoes: This dish has diced red skin potatoes with thinly shredded cooked red onions and bell peppers. It has a coating of spice on it which made the ketchup unnecessary as it was already so flavorful. The inside was fluffy, but the outside had no crisp and was slightly oily. I know part of it was due to the fact that it was delivered, but I wasn't a fan still.  Veg Life Quiche: This was a good quiche. The egg were tender with the addition of buttermilk, and it was teeming with spinach, tomato, onion and topped with cheddar cheese. The crust was a standard crust.  This is a solid option for catering if you want to have a more unique place than the standard chain restaurants. I liked how everything was almost all pre portioned out too.
