It was a bit busy so we expected a slight delay on drinks/food, but our server kept checking on us every few minutes and kept our drinks full. The atmosphere/design is very unique and offers great talking points for the table. You can look around and always find something new you haven't seen before. For food, I got the French dip, my husband got the fried catfish, and mom got the smash burger. Food was EXCELLENT. The au jus from the French dip was not overly salty as I've had in the past, and it was the perfect amount for the sandwich. Not like other places that will either give you a big tub of au jus or ever a small saucer cup. After lunch, we walked around as they have a shopping area inside with soaps, handmade pottery/kitchenware, and local vendor products such as hatch chile cream cheese and pickled vegetables. Price was very favorable too and didn't seem to be overly priced where the business/vendor up charges significantly to make a huge profit. Definitely worth stopping by even if you only have time for Togo coffee, a snack, of just to shop around!

The hardest part was choosing a drink from the aptly named, southern inspired menu. Should I have the Hell in a Handbasket, Mama's Switch, or a That'll do Pig? You can't go wrong. Sized were much larger than expected and priced far below similar type restaurants we have patronized in larger towns. For dinner, I had the filet, medium rare, and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. That shouldn't make a restaurant stand out, but based on recent experiences, it was a delight. Dessert was a hot bread pudding accompanied by vanilla ice cream. Superb. Stop by this gem of a place if you are in the area. Lots of cute shops nearby, too.

Reserve well in advance during football weekends or special events, such as graduation week. We enjoyed the Tuscan Tortellini ($23): shrimp and chicken sautéed in garlic with sun-dried tomatoes and spinach, herb sauce, cheese tortellini with basil and parmesan. Two of us split the tasty three-lamb-chop special for $36. Several nearby booths were enjoying the Southern Ribs ($23 ): seven slow-cooked, then crispy-fried pork ribs in a BBQ sauce, served with pimento mac-n-cheese, cornbread, and vegetable du jour. In addition to the dinner entrées ($20-$32) and specials ($40), Lefty's has dinner sandwiches under $14 and dinner burgers under $15. Plus flatbread pizzas, $14. Wines by the glass from $8 to $10.50. 24 beers on tap. Cocktails are $9 to $11. Service is fast, efficient, and mostly friendly (ours got a little snippy when we asked about a cocktail order that was slow to arrive, but it was a busy graduation night). Dependable on all counts; we'll be back.

Our plan was to grab a late…read morebreakfast, do a little shopping, tour Blacksburg to witness how much it's changed, then attend the basketball game. Joe's was a nice start to the day as they provide good food and good service within a tiny, but capable venue. Joe's is located near the Main St-College Ave intersection, next door to Hokie Hair (mind you, College Ave is no longer open to traffic, it's now a huge sidewalk). They are small and, since all the buildings along this portion of Main St are older, its interior is dark and dated. A makeover could be in order, but its old school look and feel lends itself to the friendly small town vibe I've become accustomed to in Blacksburg. This diner was nearly full, so we sat at the bar. There were three servers on the floor - all students. All three were friendly, helpful and loquacious (we talked about college in general, how to take advantage of a college's resources, and even discussed desired future outcomes of their educations - plenty of interesting topics for a chill Sunday morning). Neal had the t-bone steak and eggs, while I ordered a dish known as Joetaters (diced potatoes, cheddar jack, eggs, onions, peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms; and a choice of either bacon, ham, country ham, or sausage). Joetaters also came with a choice of white or wheat toast (or you can choose a biscuit for an extra $1.50). I chose wheat toast, and the entree was excellent. Neal ate his entire meal, so it's safe to say we enjoyed our food. Joe's is an excellent diner with awesome food and service. I can't wait to dine there again when I return. Thank you, Joe's Diner!
