Lavash
Bill T.

Being married to a Turk, I always search for Turkish places wherever we go so when we found ourselves in White River Junction VT of all places, I was shocked to see multiple Turkish-themed businesses! We visited the cafe and the home goods store so we had to round out the trifecta and come to Tuckerbox for dinner. It was a random Tuesday and I was pleased to see that it was packed! Luckily we scored a nice table outside and got to enjoy the bustling WRJ street scene as we dined. We started with some cold mezze, babaganoush and ezme. I liked both but the ezme could have been a little spicier. The lavash (which you need to order separately) was very good and the perfect vehicle for delivering the mezzes to your mouth. For an entree, we split a beyti, which is an adana kebab wrapped in lavash. My Turkish husband said it was okay...I liked it all right as well. The adana was good but the lavash was underdone and very doughy. It reminded me of undercooked crescent rolls from Pillsbury. The lavash we had with our appetizers was perfect so this was a little odd. Additionally, although the beyti was served with a yogurt, there is often a tomato sauce on top of the dough and there wasn't any tomato sauce on the dish. I get that people do things differently, but I think a tomato sauce would have added some flavor and acidity to the dish. It was fine but I think the traditional tomato sauce would have kicked it up a notch. They were out of kunefe so we passed on dessert. I think this is a good place and I liked the vibe and the service. Would definitely come back but would probably try a different dish. We will still commit to supporting Turkish businesses wherever we find them and I was happy to see so many people here enjoying their meals.

What a delightful experience. Gorgeous day, bluebird sunny, early autumn, foliage change in full bloom, and I just happened to be in WRJ to enjoy it. I could have been in Europe with the scenery and the people. Tuckerbox is next to the Junction Arts and Media locale, so the place was animated with artsy people as well as visitors and leaf peepers. Service was flawless. I had their gyro on lavash, which was superb. A cappuccino was also part of the faire. The menu looks distinct and appetizing. Definitely return.

Visiting from Maine--I'm SO glad we found this spot on our second day of vacation. I had lamb shish kabobs and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time, easily a 10/10. Lots of non alcoholic drink options, staff is absolutely amazing, everyone is so incredibly friendly and personable, and just a great atmosphere overall. I have been 3x just this week already-ha! Not sure how this isn't a more recommended place!

A really great spot for WRJ! We were one of the last seatings of the night and they had sold out of many of their entrees, so come early. I recommended getting a side of babaganoush if you like me, like having a sauce or spread with your meat. Will be back!

This Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant is a great find in White River Junction, VT. The food was SO flavorful, and Alejandro, our waiter, added greatly to our experience. We started with a sampler app, served with bread. Tasty. Hubby had the eggplant stuffed with ground lamb, and I had the spicy Adrana (lamb) kebab. The Syrah wine was the perfect recommendation for my dish. We splurged on 2 desserts; hubby's was the baklava trio and I had the rice pudding (heavenly if you enjoy tapioca!). Hubby also tried the Turkish coffee (we'll see if he's still up at midnight ). Food was 5 star; gave the 4 stars due to smallish app for price and $5 mark up on small "trio" samples (baklava on the menu wasn't available). We'll be back!

Great date spot and vibe check place in white river junction with pretty good food. It's a Festival of Lights in there Food/ Babaganoush 5/5: Very good thin Rosen bread with the spread, very light and addictive for an appetizer Doner 4.5/5: Very good and easy to eat, pretty good portion and like the sauce and rice that come along with it Balaclava 4.5/5: Great way to end the meal with this flakey, layered sweets for desserts Service: it's trendy and is what it is

Delicious! My partner also liked the grilled cheese. Beautiful ambiance and table setting. Service was good!

Turkish Meze Platter

Amazing Turkish meal, would've loved bigger portions at this price. The restaurant itself has authentic Turkish charm, with colored glass lamps and special tiling. There are two rooms of seating and all of the servers were attentive and kind. Specialty cocktails are definitely worth trying, especially the Black Sea Serpent (came with two flowers). We started with the large Turkish Meze Platter, which was supposed to be large enough for four people but would not satisfy a hungry group (we had to get another order of bread to split those two pieces). The hummus and babaganoush stood out as well-balanced favorites. The tzatziki was a bit sour-cream like, and could perhaps use some more garlic or other seasoning. It came with four grape leaves, which were savory and well seasoned, although perhaps a little soft for my liking. Bread was fantastic, although I could not see how four people could share just the one piece it came with. My main, the Lamb Meatballs, was incredibly delicious, with well-seasoned meat, sizzling off the grill. The pickled cucumber cut through the grease and the rice was also fantastic. My one complaint again is that I would expect larger portion sizes at this price point.

Turkish Meze Platter and Zucchini Fritter (M-cver)

Although we did not have a reservation, we were seated inside near a window where we watched the Amtrak train roll in across the street. The menu has several pages, and our server quickly arrived with water and to take our drink order. I choose a lavender spritz (lavender chamomile syrup, seltzer, and cream), which was smooth with a pleasant light lavender taste. My partner opted for Corinas Switchy (switchel, lime, and brazilian ginger). Our friends ordered the Caravan Saray (mazcal tequila, grand marnier, lemon juice, orange juice, and smoky spice). We opted to get several appetizers instead of entrees: the large meze platter, phyllo cheese rolls, falafel fritters, zucchini fritters, babaganoush, and lavash bread. The large meze (for 4) only is large if you plan to get entrees. It had 4 dolma, and about 4 tablespoons each of haydari, babaganoush, hummus, and ezme. The phyllo cheese rolls were a favorite of our friends, especially with the red pepper coulis. The falafel were flavored well and good with the dipping sauce. The zucchini fritters were crispy, but they tasted like the frying oil needed changing soon. We loved the babganoush enough to get a separate order of it. We would definitely order the hummus, ezme, and lavash again. My partner and I split a traditional baklava for dessert, while our friend selected a very rich tahini and helva brownie. Those were a nice finish to our appetizer dinner. The space interior of the space has lovely high ceilings, large glass windows to the street, and a variety of decor--some of it artwork for sale. There also were several outdoor tables for pretty days. Our friends who are new to the area will be regulars, and we'll come again when we visit them.

The counter server was kind enough to explain different menu items. We ordered a breakfast pide and a ground lamb pide. I got an iced mocha latte, one companion had a hot spiced mocha latte, and another companion had an iced latte with vanilla, I believe. The iced mocha was very good. The food took a bit of time but it was because it needed to cook in the wood fired oven. The ground lamb pide was full of spices and was very flavourful. It was tasty but it got a bit overwhelming when I was eating it alone. My friend offered to share some of her breakfast pide. I am not an egg person but upon the first few bites, I got quite emotional. It immediately made me think of a meal my late grandmother used to make. It was both a bit sad and wonderful as she had passed within a few months of me coming to Cappadocia and the memory associated with food gave me comfort. I'd recommend trying Cappadocia. It's a beautifully decorated space with some seating, it is a nice way to eat something a bit different from most of the food in the area and the food is very good.

There was an American dude working the counter and I'll say he didn't exhibit what I would consider traditional Turkish hospitality. There is a screen to order from right by the door when you walk it and I guess he wants you to order from that because he was more effective than Susanna Hoffs in a Bangles video at avoiding direct eye contact. I would say if the tablet is the ordering device of choice they should put it in front of the counter rather than by the door where it's behind you. We finally figured it out and were able to order on the tablet but it was disheartening to watch a woman come in after us and stand forlornly by the counter hoping that the guy would notice her. He was great at stacking dishes, wiping down counters, etc and doing everything but acknowledging the human standing five feet from him. Anyway, just as she was about to leave he said hello and then took the order in the traditional way. The tea was good and the mood was nice and the pastries looked amazing. This could have been four or five stars with personal service.

This is not a place where a waitress comes to your table to take your order. We are local to the area and I created a list of places that I would like to eat at and this was one of them. I had Mediterranean food once before and that was in North Carolina and this restaurant was way better. The food was hot. The food was fresh. The chicken, lamb beef and I know I'm forgetting one more but the four types of meat I had were very moist and very good. Very flavorful! proportions were great for a hungry lady after 8 1/2 hours of yardwork. I chose to do the spicy hummus and WARNING take WARNING that is very spicy. The pita bread was not stale. The staff was very friendly. I did say to them that I was willing to try anything they recommended. I was up for an adventure, and there was not much that I don't like and that's what she chose for me. The seating area was plenty. It was a little bit busy, which I was surprised to see. I just figured it wasn't going to be that busy, but it was. It seemed very family oriented. It was not loud at all. It also seemed to be clean. The chair is on the other hand they could use an upgrade. They were comfortable, but you can definitely tell by the armrest that they are used. I thought the price was also very reasonable considering

The portion size is variable. I've had it "generous" and I've had it "Whoa - that's a LOT of food". They're not covered with a standard tzatziki sauce - theirs is more feta forward. Super tasty. The fries vary as well. Sometimes a bit crunchier and sometimes, while still crunchy, more toward McD fries style. But it's just the outer surface that crunches. Inside it's smooth and creamy. Top drawer. You'll find that they tuck a few fries into the wrap. A nice touch. The only negative point is speed. I've always been there early - the first for lunch. But it still takes a fair bit of time to get the food. Arrive during the crowded time and you're definitely going to be waiting around. But ... worth it. They have a lot more on the menu and have an interesting alcohol free beer/soda that was new to me and a nice change from actual soda. Definitely worth a visit.

There seemed to be plenty of seating with dimmed lights. We got our orders pretty quickly what felt like a wait time of about 10 minutes or so. We ordered feta fries, tzatziki fries, and 4 different gyros. I got the falafel gyro and it was delicious even after bringing it back to the hotel about 15 minutes away! The gyros were all wrapped in foil. The pita bread was soft and fluffy, and the falafel and gyro itself was flavorful. I also really enjoyed their fries dipped in the tzatziki sauce. I ordered the Zeus gyro along with a side of fries. The fries came out piping hot, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. They were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and honestly some of the better fries I've had in a while. A great start to the meal. The gyro itself had great flavor--the ingredients were fresh, the toppings were vibrant, and the seasoning was spot on. Unfortunately, it was lukewarm when it reached the table. The taste was good enough that I kept going, but I couldn't help but think how much better it would have been served hot. A gyro with that much potential deserves to come out at full temperature, and I was disappointed that it didn't quite get there. That said, the overall experience was still positive. The friendliness of the staff and the quality of the ingredients make me believe this was probably an off moment in the kitchen. I'd definitely give them another shot because the foundation is clearly solid--and when that gyro comes out hot, I'm sure it'll be fantastic. Worth a visit, and worth trying again.
