You're from the Himalayas and you somehow find yourself in the US. Of course you'll open a restaurant here on the US Northeastern seaboard in the beauty of the Appalachian mountain range. I believe there are 4 Nepalese restaurants in the region and other than this, I've not yet been to one before. There are 2 in Burlington, this one is at Dartmouth College in Hanover and the fourth is in Quebec. What a special experience to visit this Kathmandu-style, Nepalese restaurant. The Base Camp Cafe is in the basement of a Dartmouth campus building. Getting to it is tricky if you need the elevator but go through the Mexican restaurant and down their back hallway to get to it. Everyone reviews the Base Camp Cafe's most famous app: the Mo mo's and with good reason. Our mo mo chicken dumplings were not like the Asian steamed dumplings we are used to. They are so much better! The outside of the dumpling is more like a thick wonton soup noodle with multiple layers. Sooo good! The heart chicken flavor is clean and satisfying. There are notes of cilantro apparent in the center. The golden lentil dal soup, on the other hand, was deflating. It was mainly a broth with tiny bits of lentils and not much else. It was more like eating a curried chicken broth with a lentil paste vs. a hearty soup full of lentils. The red chili curry at spice level 5 is delicious. I chose the veggie curry and it has good heat, not too intense. The tomato flavor in this curry is strong like a sun ripened tomato paste. The veggies in it are delightfully firm and crunchy. The gigantic bowl of stir fry noodles are similar to al dente fettuccine vs. a rice pasta. They have an easy smokey flavor. I requested a side of hot sauce. What an impressive first tasting experience! I can only compare it to if you could taste a crystal lake, it is like this. There is a pure, clear flavor that hits your taste buds first. Like water but condensed. Then the heat builds and builds. And continues to build minutes after. The dark green sauce gracing the top of our rice is also an experience. It's more rich and - again - condensed than any hot Asian green chili sauce I've had. It is at least made of cilantro and avocado, but also a tiny amount of jalapeño with olive oil. Absolutely loved it! I do not know exactly how to write this but there was a bit of a spiritual cleansing here and I'm not talking about digestive. Later in the evening we just felt more relaxed and positive from the high mountain peak dining recipes and exotic wall art. It's as though any lingering negative vibes fled and headed back to the hills. The service at the Base Camp Cafe is earnest, efficient and kind. The location is a quaint little spot in the basement. Well decorated and not hard to find. I got takeout tonight and having read the reviews of course got the momos and the curry dish as well as the stir fried calamari. When ordering the curry they ask your desired heat level. 1-10. Most places it's a bunch of nonsense because their idea of spicy is a joke. This place isn't messing around! I got an 8 as I'm a hot food lover. I barely finished my dish. It was crazy spicy. For that I am grateful. Finally a spot that does spicy legitimately. The momos, got the wild boar. Delicious! Must try. Though need extra dipping sauce. The barely a tablespoon you get with the order just isn't enough. The stir fried squid, over puffed rice crisps. Drastically over salted, bit rubbery and the rice crisps don't do much to help salvage it. Maybe they messed up a bit. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Though not trying it again. I recently had the pleasure of dining in this wonderful little restaurant. The food was tasty and plentiful. Our waiter was kind, gracious and timely. While the initial experience was wonderful, the waiter's helper threw a bucket of crap on it. We spent 45 minutes enjoying our meal when the helper tells us you need to leave, we have people waiting. I felt so angered that our dinner was so spoiled by an individual that has no concept of hospitality or business awareness. Looking forward to some authentic Nepalese food however this wasn't what I expected, unfortunately. The paneer and spinach Mo Mo which is supposed to be Nepalese specialty didn't make it. It was tough and stuffing just didn't have that kick. The chicken and mushroom Tarkari was prepared without a "heart". Base Camp is in the basement of a building, but a skylight provides some natural light in addition to the usual incandescent. The decor brings an additional touch of Nepal to the dining experience. We were greeted and seated promptly upon arriving for lunch. Our server brought water while we perused the menu. We started with vegetable mo-mo (steamed dumplings), which were bite-size and full of flavor. I ordered a mild sweet potato takari, which came with ample sweet potato chunks, carrots, and other vegetables. The tomato-based sauce was slightly sweet. My partner ordered shrimp takari with a 7 of 10 on the heat. He described it as a heat that built, but not too hot by any means. Your experience may vary! Overall great meal. The vegetarian momos were definitely the best momos I've ever had. The spinach paneer were good too but definitely preferred the savory flavor of the other ones. The herb flatbread was good, soft if a bit bland but the cilantro sauce it comes with was out of this world. So fresh and make the bread really pop. The employees here were very sweet but the food was just okay. I came here with a group of friends and we were all excited to order some momos. We each ordered a different type of filling. When we ordered, the server asked us if that was all we were having. I was a little confused because the momos I'm used to are quite sizeable-- an order of 8 momos can easily satisfy my hunger. When the food arrived, I finally understood why the server asked if we were only having momos. The momos were tiny! I have never seen momos this small before. Luckily I wasn't very hungry because otherwise I would have had to order 2 plates of them. They were also not cheap. 8 small momos cost $10-12 depending on the filling type. To be fair, the chicken momos I got had good flavor. I got to try the wild boar momos and buffalo momos as well. I wasn't a fan of the wild boar but the buffalo was good. My friend got a chicken & mushroom tarkari. The food was underwhelming for $17. The dish barely came with any mushrooms and my friend did not enjoy the dish very much. read more

A great spot to try Nepalese cuisine in the Upper Valley. Most of the entrees (curries, stir fry, etc.) all taste similar with just different options for protein and spice level. The dishes are packed with flavor and seasoned well. The momos are especially delicious and are the perfect appetizer for the table. Vegetarian momos Grilled delicacy: Basil shrimp Tarkari Curry delicacy: Eggplant Basil Paneer and Potato Tarkari We ordered the level 4 spice level which was good - enough of a kick but not too spicy that you need to drink water the whole time :D Filling amount of food to have three entrees and an appetizer split amongst three people. It took a while to get the server's attention. The rice was dry and the three entrees all had the same flavor. Aside from the specific ingredients like the potoatoes and the shrimp, it tasted pretty much the same. The momos were good but a bit dry as well so you definitely need to use the dipping sauce. My bites of the shrimp in the shrimp dish was overwhelmingly salty. I think because a lot of the food was on the dry side and the flavors of the different entrees tasted the same, I give my rating. But I'd also say this place is worth giving a try to make your own opinion, and also trying the awesome Nepalese cuisine! read more

We researched this restaurant before selecting it. This was the first restaurant where we ate inside since Copenhagen, Denmark in January 2020. As we entered we noticed that the tables were well spaced apart, the entire staff was vaccinated, the staff wore masks, and they kept their distance from us. We ordered the lamb MoMo, fish tarkari, the mushroom tarkari, the flat herbed bread and the lentil Dal soup. The MoMos arrived steamy hot with a nice dipping sauce. The flavor was great and I ate far too many of them. The bread arrived next and it had a green herbal dipping sauce. The bread was baked fresh that morning and tasted great. Next was the small cup of Dal soup. That too had a nice herbal taste. The main course arrived last and it too was steamy hot and very flavorful. We both agreed that this restaurant should get five stars on Yelp. We will definitely stop by the next time we are in the area. read more

Amazing find. I started my dining experience with momos which dubbed as the popular anytime Nepalese food. WOW they were amazing. I chose wild boar as my protein. They burst with flavor and I highly recommend this appetizer. As my main dish I accepted a recommendation from the staff and tried grilled chicken Nepalese style. OMG this dish is worth a trip to Hanover itself. The flavors were amazing and earthy. I absolutely enjoyed this chicken dish. In my opinion a tell tale sign of a chef's worth is found in how well they can prepare sauteed veggies. The vegetables in my dish were spot on, crisp and hot with just the right amount of oil and seasoning. The only drawback to my dinner was the kheer. I wish I could have enjoyed this as much as the rest of my dinner. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant. I would most definitely return if travels take me anywhere close. Tarkari is cooked in a tomato base curry sauce w veggies. We had chicken and mushroom Tarkari and plantain Tarkari. They have a variety of vegan dishes. The Tarkari was excellent. Comes w rice or extra veggies. Portion size is large. Depending on appetite could feed 2. We also had some infused refreshments one had tamarind and ginger the other had cucumbers. I rarely post reviews, but Base Camp is worthy of 5 stars. It's a casual, comfortable space with a relaxed vibe. Service was excellent. I got the spinach/paneer dumplings, lentil dal soup and tofu takari. My friend had the chicken dumplings, chicken takari and herbed bread. I stopped by here a couple of Friday's ago with my wife. We were checking out Dartmouth around lunchtime and decided to check Yelp for a place to eat. We found Base Camp Cafe and since we both like Nepali food, decided to head on over. It's located in the basement of a building with many other shops. The inside consisted of a small bar and then tables throughout the rest. It's walls were decorated with paintings and statues, all of which I assume were Nepalese in origin. Finally they have decorations on the lights which made them look like chandeliers and then some flags (prayer flags?) along a recessed part of the ceiling. For lunch on this day i decided to order the Chicken tarkari and also went with a cup of lentil Dal soup. I honestly didn't know what it was and actually still don't but it was a chicken dish on the lunch specials. Whenever the server asked me how spicy I wanted my dish, I replied an 8. He hesitated for a second and then confirmed that I wanted it that spicy as it was quite spicy. At this point I hedged my bets and took a 7 instead. After a short wait my lentil Dal soup came out first and had a nice yellow shade to it. It's flavor was very mild although there was the taste of some spices in it. Once I had finished with that my entree came out and I have to admit that I was pretty excited about how the chicken looked with its sauce and all of the vegetables. The rice had an interesting ring of green sauce along the top too which I don't think I have seen before. On my first taste I was glad that the server cautioned me about the spice as it was pretty spicy. I mean it wasn't to the point where I couldn't handle it but it definitely had a good kick to it. The chicken in it was juicy and tender and I enjoyed the Zucchini, carrots and bell peppers that came with it as well. Then the sauce that was on top tasted like fresh herbs which was nice to flavor the rice with. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. I should know, I ordered everything: wild boar momo, gundruk soup, broccoli bites, herbed bread, spicy pickles, lassi and a dessert. It was all tasty. Come to think of it, I ate way too much. Oh well. A problem for another day. I also like their spice scale. Everything can be ordered from a 1 to a 10. They looked at me like I had nine heads when I went with the ten. Then they warned me. Then they confirmed. Then they laughed in the kitchen. And it was spicy. But excellent. Sometime spicy food is just spicy. This was flavorful and very spicy. Got takeout from Base Camp today for dinner, and I was pleasantly surprised! I got the chicken mo mo and the sweet potato chhoila. The chicken mo mo is basically just a dumpling; it was good but not crazy flavorful and I found the skin to be on the thick side. The sweet potato chhoila on the other hand was very flavorful and has a great kick to it! The prices I also found to be very reasonable.
