They have spice level from 1-10 and their 7 is pretty hot so watch out guys who do not eat hot food. The place has a pretty nice ambience and we were given the cosi-est spot in the restaurant. Being vegetarian we found decent options here and ordered tofu noodles, basil paneer tarkari, lentil soup and bread (i know for a lunch of 2 we went a bit overboard) Everything was freshly made and savory, the tofu was organic and very soft. I had never had such good veggie noodles with tofu in America( believe me i have been to a number of noodle bars in NY and elsewhere). Just one comment that the food seems to be a bit pricey ! We had the Wild Boar mo:mo's which are steamed dumplings, Chicken Chhoila which was a tangy chicken dish on puffed rice, Lamb Tarkari curry, and stir fry shrimp noodles. Have eaten here at least a dozen times now, most recently last week. Highly recommend. Reservations suggested. Momos, a dumpling appetizer, are expensive but lovely with a light tasty sauce. The various dishes we ordered (2 tarkaris and a chili) were beautifully seasoned and matched our "spice level" requests. The bread was a disappointed lacked flavor, salt and chemical aftertaste only thing to help the bread was the avocado cilantro chutney, started with Dal lentil soup, nice and hot, under seasoned (salt mainly lacked) good flavor but very thin watery consistency, could have been thicker with more lentils which were not even visible. The dish I had, Chicken Tarkari, was very flavorful and tasted great. The rice with the green cilantro cause was very flavorful and so were the chicken and vegetables. My mago lassi was also pretty good, nice yogurt mago taste. My party got momos which were pretty decent. One of my family got stir fry noodles with tofu, it tasted bland and there wasn't any flavor they said. I would recommend getting one of their Tarkaris, everyone at my table got Tarkari dishes which they loved. read more

It was a cold, rainy fall evening and my toddler was very hungry. We had called ahead to make a reservation for 3 people. On entering the restaurant we informed the server that we had called ahead and he told us it would be 4-5 mins to get seated. At this time the restaurant was about 50% full at 5:45pm on Sunday evening. As we waited inside, another party stepped in and informed the server that they had also called ahead and reserved for a table for 10. The server immediately started arranging their table and within 2 mins they were all seated. At this point, since we had entered, no efforts were made to set up our table and both the servers in the restaurant had continued to do their work and complete other orders. Visible irked with the situation, my husband approached one of the servers to enquire how much longer it would take for them to seat the 3 of us while they had seated a party of 10 within 2 mins. The server was very defensive at once and instead of apologizing or mending the situation he just said "I told you it would be 4-5 mins". He then slammed some menus onto the table and just told us from one end of the room that our table was ready. While we debated whether to leave the restaurant or just eat since our toddler was hungry, the server just kept staring at us! Such a pity that our dinner started this way as the food we ate was tasty and well made. If it wasn't for the racial discrimination and lack of apology there after I would have highly recommended this place. Pity that I shall only remember it for other reasons but the food. read more

It's a unique place, and I appreciate the casual nature of the space and the good service. However, the food just didn't blow me away. We came with a larger group and shared everything. It's in the basement of a commercial building. 1. Chicken noodles: This was pretty decent, with broccoli, carrots, and lo-mein. It was a bit greasy, but the flavor was good. 2. Jiro chicken: I was pretty disappointed with this dish. The chicken strips were dry and a bit overcooked. Maybe that's the way this dish is supposed to be prepared, but I was not a fan of this. 3. Sweet potato dish: I like how the dishes come with a scoop of rice. This was pretty good, but unfortunately not as flavorful as it sounded. 4. Wild boar dumplings (momos): This was really good! My favorite part of the meal were the dumplings! This one had a unique taste to it, with a little "game" taste, but very well made. 5. Lamb dumplings: Very strong lamb flavor, but delicious! The dumpling skin was really good, with perfect texture. 6. Paneer and spinach dumplings: This was one of my favorites. It's very unique to have an Indian dish in a Chinese-type dumpling format. I enjoyed it very much. 7. Lamb, chicken mushroom curries: I did like the curries, although it tasted pretty standard. The chicken and mushroom one was better than the lamb. 8. Strawberry lassi: I've never had this flavor before. I think it was artificial, because it wasn't super flavorful. Should have stuck with mango or salted! Our mistake was probably that we ordered everything with a high level of spice. I recommend varying the spiciness level so your taste buds can catch a break. Base Camp Cafe it's so refreshing. The balance of flavor, aromas and spices is truly amazing... very light yet very noticeable in every dish. We had Mo-mo for appetizers: lamb and spinach - they look like pot stickers, but with a very delicate texture taste. The sauce that came with the Mo-mo was mustard seed based and quite flavorful as well. We also ordered pickled carrots (very spicy...do great as a complement for the food) and green beans - even those could be ordered with different spice, 1-10 levels! We had the chicken curry and lamb chilly as our main courses... Light, fresh, very, very flavorful... Portions are just he right size. A veritable culinary delight. Must have the rice pudding as a desert! I'll leave it to that... Service was on par with the quality of the food... The owner came and talked us through the menu and you could tell not only he has the passion for his restaurant but also knows Nepalese cuisine in and out. A must try and return restaurant for those with an open mind to different cuisine and looking for healthy yet fully flavorful food. And that's why I give this restaurant 5 stars. What to get: We had the lamb and mushroom tarkari (level 8 spicy), 1/2 chicken + 1/2 spinach mo mos, one mango lassi, and one freshly squeezed orange juice. The lassi and OJ were very good. The texture of the mo mos (dumplings) were thin and the stuffing was delicious. The lamb and mushroom tarkari was flavorful and it was on point. The lamb was tender and there were plenty of vegetables. I only wished there were potatoes with the tarkari too. The dish was pretty spicy, but we definitely could've handled spicier! :) The waiter gave us a sample of the "hot chili" sauce on the side and it was definitely spicy! Environment: The restaurant was spacious and the waiters were very attentive. There were plenty of tables and seats. We were seated right away. The restaurant wasn't loud, so it's a great place to have dinner and carry a conversation. Base Camp was my first experience eating Nepalese food and I thought it was pretty delicious! Most of the entrees are curries that come with a side of rice. I got the eggplant dish, which I wished would have had a little more eggplant in it, but overall it was good. I liked having the option to choose the level of spiciness ranging from 1 (mild) to 10 (extremely hot). I opted for a 3 because I have a pretty low tolerance for spiciness. I really liked the decor of the restaurant - it was dimly lit but the walls were decorated with various lanterns and banners. The service was also pretty great! The restaurant was a little tricky to find at first. We were driving along Lebanon St looking for it when I spotted the sign for Base Camp with a bunch of other stores. It's in a larger building with other stores and restaurants so it's kind of easy to miss if you aren't a local. We parked on the street which is normally pay parking but since we came after 5, it was free. The restaurant is located in the basement next to the Orient Chinese and Japanese restaurant so pay attention to which door you walk into. At first I thought it was all one restaurant downstairs but they are definitely two separate entities. Base Camp is on the right as you come down the stairs while Orient is on the left. This was my first experience with Nepalese food but I loved it. The owners are very friendly and welcoming so I felt comfortable asking about their menu items. I knew what momos were but I had no idea what tarkari was so I asked and he explained it to me. I ended up ordering that (momo tarkari) while my husband ordered the chicken tarkari. Both were great. They let us pick our desired spice level on a scale of 1 to 10 so we both ordered 5s. It was pleasantly warm without ever becoming painful. I have no idea how authentic this place is given that they were my first Nepalese restaurant experience but I can say that it was delicious. If I'm in the area again, I would definitely come back. A small heads up though, it's a touch on the pricey side (my momo tarkari was about 18 dollars) but I didn't mind because the place felt more upscale with the decor and presentation. read more

If you're not a fan of spicy food, I highly recommend getting everything at a maximum of "5" spiciness, aka medium. A little more than a 5, and you may end up not thoroughly enjoying your food. If you're going during lunch, the lunch portions should suffice. Non-lunch portions are huge. Also, the cucumber cooler is a really refreshing drink.
