The ambience parallels what I'd think a Nepalese restaurant would be. Lanterns, statues and figurines, colorful cloths, etc. The smell of spices is enticing and intoxicating. I had the fish tarkari, which is the Nepalese version of curry. It is tomato based and I was encouraged to get the fish. Fish and veggie ratio was very unbalanced. I think there was 2-3 small pieces of fish amongst a lot of veggies. It was a white fish, cod or tilapia - nonetheless inexpensive. For a $12 dish, I was expecting at bit more. The meal became repetitive after awhile and it lacked some fresh herbs to offset the heat. I ended up getting the herbed bread, which is served warm and crunchy. Really good. What a great find. And coincidentally at the base camp near the mountains in VT. Go figure! Absolutely delicious. Great service - very friendly and courteous. The momos are phenomenal as are the tarkaris (which is basically a tomato based curry). Word of caution for those that don't like the heat in their curries. Stay under a 5! I grew up in Hanover but haven't lived in the area for about 14 years, and in that time most of my old favorites have closed. My wife and I live in NYC and have been pretty spoiled by the food options there, so we come to NH to visit my family, not for the dining. (NH "pizza"...) We've been riding out the pandemic with my parents, and have been trying some of the new local places. Our takeout order from Basecamp has been hands-down the best thing we've ordered. I was so excited when I opened up my takeout container. When I finished, I had to share. Base Camp is awesome! The food is always excellent and the in-person service was great (before the pandemic - now it's takeout or delivery). If you like to eat vegan or vegetarian, there are tons of options for you, and the spice levels run from 1-10 so you can choose how adventurous you want to be. Personally I love the Mushroom Tarkari - an excellent curry-style dish, and different enough from Indian food (which we also love) to be worth considering as its own thing. (There are also lots of interesting meat choices if that's your thing - wild boar dumplings, anyone?) Ordering online was super easy and delivery came 15 minutes early. The hidden little spot has mounds of flavor and a hearty menu of deliciousness. Prepare to be amazed with a whole lineup of foods. The MoMos are perfect in wetting the palate. The steamed dumplings come in a number of stuffings. The vegetable ones were succulent and there were about 8 in an order. It came with a dipping sauce i think was peanut based. For an entree, I had the shrimp tarkari. The plate was 90% vegetables, 10% shrimp and accompanied with a side of basmati rice. It was great. I'd definitely come back to this spot. read more

After reading all of the rave reviews for Base Camp we decided to give it a try. A very small but comfortable establishment that is warm and welcoming. The staff was friendly as we navigated the menu, explains dishes and offered recommendations. We ended up trying the Mo Mo chicken dumplings, Chicken Takeri, and Shrimp with vegetables, noodle stir fry. All were made to order, well seasoned, and soo tasty! It was hard to pick a favorite as we enjoyed everything to include the flat bread. We will be back to try more dishes and their popular desserts! Highly Recommend! read more

We were drawn in by the "Himalayan/ Nepalese" menu and we're delighted to discover a completely new cuisine...started with the Wild Boar "Mo-Mo", calamari (unlike anything we have ever had) and Chicken "jeepa" (forgive me if I misspelled it), all were wonderfully different! And then the Main's were Wild Boar ribs, stir fried noodles with shrimp and Fish Tarkari...AWESOME! Be careful when ordering spice level, we LOVE heat and the L5 on a scale 1-10 was enough, believe me! A good stop for dinner on our drive down from Montreal. We were intrigued by the reviews of the momos, which are steamed dumplings. We got the wild boar, thinking that it would be the closest to pork. They were good, but not the best ever. This place is very vegetarian friendly, which I love. The kids liked the stir-fry noodles and we liked the chicken tarkari. Parking was easy, but finding the restaurant within the building was a little bit harder. Make sure you walk into the correct restaurant when you go down the stairs! read more

We love Nepalese Food. We were at Dartmouth for an interview and decided to try this place after seeing some good reviews. When we found out that the Momos we ordered were ridiculously small with barely any stuffing in them, we decided to rate it as one of the worst restaurants we have been to. Then me and my friends wrote the google reviews about the food and the response to those reviews from the owner was so unprofessional and disgusting that we decided to do a yelp review as well. I would love to see this place improve and do a great business. I hope the owner changes his attitude and takes our negative comments as a challenge to do better rather than bashing us online. What can I say? It's got great food at good prices. I had the chicken takari, and it was great! The spice level is adjustable, and I was given just the right amount of spice - spicy, but not unbearable. The flavors were on point too, a nice savory spicy combo that had me cleaning off the plate. The blueberry haluwa was great too, being warm and sweet, a good way to end off the meal. We had been wanting to try this place ever since we learned of it. Always open to trying something a bit different, and neither of us had officially had anything Nepalese, coupled with the far better half being vegetarian, we figured it'd be a great place to find some different fare. We weren't disappointed. The atmosphere wasn't quite what I'd expected (lower level & no windows), but the courtesy of the staff and the meals made it worth the trip and a guaranteed return! The menu was pleasantly varied and included something for about any tastes - with the most choices for those not afraid of a little spice. When taking your order, we were asked "on scale of 1 to 10, how spicy do you like your food?" - an indicator we were going to be served something fairly authentic. :) Okay, not having been to Nepal, I can't vouch for the authenticity but I can say that what we received was very tasty, not just hot/spicy (no, hot sauce is not a flavor folks). This is my favorite restaurant in the Upper Valley VT/NH. The bulk of the time it's my go-to when I want to eat out. I'm a super-picky eater (grain free vegan) and I find choices there - which is a rarity. I'm a huge fan of the takaris, with the jackfruit being my favorite. The chia seed dessert is a nice treat for vegans too. I bring carnivore friends here and the menu really wows them with its variety. Their prices are consistent with Hanover and the employees are really sweet - always kind, always highly accommodating. HUGE bar. It's a really nice treat to have this around here where fresh, non-GMO, high-vibration food is rare. I'd like to see them be more environmental, and I'm pleased that they are heading in that direction. Styrofoam is never worth buying and gang, please stop asking for straws. read more

Everything here is very well made. The momos are bursting with a medley of flavors. The soup has an astounding depth of flavor to it. The curries and chilies are loaded with spices, heat, other flavors, meat (if you so choose), and lots of veggies. Even their specialty cocktails are remarkably good--the tamarind rum cocktail is a must-try. Every single item on the menu is clearly produced with a great deal of skill and care. On top of all that, the portions are generous. I'm a major chili head--as in, I love chili peppers and things cooked with them--and I'm very rarely satisfied by the heat level served in restaurants. However, the level 10 heat here is damn good. It's a good sinus clearer. It's not the hottest I could eat comfortably, but it's far above most restaurants' "very hot" level. I also tried my friends' level 7, which was pretty mild but still pleasantly warm. This place is a real gem. I don't live in the area, but next time I find myself around here, I will definitely have to return. read more

We were so tired driving home to CT from Quebec City and couldn't face roadside drive-thru, so we stopped off in Hanover and found this place. We'd never eaten Nepalese before, so we thought we'd give it a try. And it was great! The chili with chicken momo was just the kind of spicy that perked me up for the drive home. And our 18-month-old really liked the paneer momos. This is really the opposite of roadside food. It was really fresh, flavorful and prepared with a great deal of care. The cook even came out to see what we thought of it since he heard we hadn't tried Nepalese before. This might have been our first time but it won't be the last. Next time we're driving up or down 91 this will definitely be a stop. read more

Had a nice lunch here during a stopover in Hanover. We shared the lamb momos, an order of bread, and the chicken and mushroom tarkari lunch entree with the dal soup add-on. The momos were yummy though a little small, and it came with a delicious dipping sauce. The bread was recommended to us by the server - we thought this was good though a bit dry, and there wasn't enough of the green sauce that came with it. Good restaurant. The momos -- small steamed dumplings -- were delicious (though I think they could have spared a bit more of the accompanying sauce). Chicken jeera was really delicious -- the inclusion of toasted cumin seeds really amps up the flavor. The wild hog short ribs under "Grilled delicacies" were also very good. Mango lassis were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. An eggplant/paneer (cheese) tarkhari (Nepalese curry evidently...) was bland. The presentation of food at Basecamp Cafe is sub-beautiful, to be honest; it's evident that not a lot of effort goes into it. On the other hand, it does give it a certain "home cooking" character... Service was very friendly, but not especially fast. But let me end on a positive note, because the restaurant deserves it: sometimes, it feels like I have tried all the Asian cuisines there are, and they begin to blend together. This food was distinctively different. And I liked that they let you adjust the spiciness of each dish on a 1 - 10 scale. I'd happily eat here again. Recommended. read more

Brilliant [relatively] new place in Hanover! I've been in town for almost 8y now, and there have been only a few new places in that time and even fewer that have been successful. Base Camp has definitely nailed it in terms of their food offerings- a delicious variety of Nepalese food! They have a reasonably nice ambiance in their restaurant too. They are extremely pricey though, particularly for a college town, and given the similarities to Indian food, I would be more-often-than-not tempted to just go down the street to Jewel of India. (Just to give you an idea, the average appetizer costs $9-12 and the average meal costs $16-20.) Food specifics: Their paneer & spinach momos are wonderful! I truly loved them, and have come back to order just those for take-out. At the owner's suggestion, I ordered the noodles, and while tasty, they were very very oily. And I mostly just tasted oil. The eggplant basil paneer is also delicious, and actually, their paneer [in general] is really well-made with a great consistency! If I can afford it, I am excited to go back! But honestly, I will rarely be able to justify the high cost! read more

I love this place. We felt kind and positive energy our whole time there, it was a much appreciated oasis coming in from a chilly wet afternoon. I had the lamb momas for an appetizer. I had the chicken and mushroom chili for the entrée (heat level 5). It was all very authentic, and delicious. Funny thing was after we finished our meal we felt this uplifting feeling of well being.
