We've been to Tu y Yo several times over the past year and have mixed feelings about the experience. On the one hand, there's the sangria, which bar none is probably the best anywhere in the Boston area. On the other hand is the inconsistent preparation and flavor of the food, which can on one visit be mind-blowing good and another a near total disappointment. This past Friday, I'm sorry to say, fell into the latter camp.
We opted for a lighter meal, so no appetizers, wasting no time in getting started with the traditional sangria. As always, delicious. I ordered the Salmón Criolla and my friend the Carmarón con Pulpo. When she requested that there be only shrimp and not octopus, the waiter explained that everything was already mixed together and stored in little plastic bags. Fine, except that one usually thinks of food being frozen in plastic bags, so a little red flag there. It took only 10 minutes for the entrees to arrive, but both of our first bites were unexpectedly unpleasant. For her, the shrimp was as rubbery as the octopus (usually a sign of being served frozen food) and the mojillo sauce had a medicinal flavor to it. My salmon was severely overcooked, flaky because it was so dry, however the guajillo sauce was delicious - creamy and slightly spicy from the peppers.
It took our waiter about 10 minutes to notice my anguished look and, doing something I've never done, I sent the dish back. Meanwhile, I did have a small side plate of black beans and mixed rice to enjoy, but that turned out to be small comfort. The rice was overcooked and flavorless, while the beans tasted as if soaked in brine. Still, I looked forward to my new salmon redeeming the meal. It didn't.
The salmon arrived and my first bite confirmed my fear - they must be using frozen fillets. The consistency and texture were exactly the same as before, though now the sauce was flavorless (though the salty beans might have something to do with that impression) and the sangria was gone. Needless to say, it was incredibly disappointing, and I would hasten to say that were I to go back, I would steer clear of their seafood options.
Perhaps equally as troubling was the service itself. Our waiter was painfully unattentive. We certainly don't want someone hovering over an intimate meal, but when you order water the minute you are seated and it doesn't come until both people have finished eating, something is amiss. Furthermore, there was no attempt to reconcile the issue with the salmon other than refiring a new bad piece of fish. I would have expected a manager or someone to come over and ensure that the customer was as happy as possible. Instead, our repeated requests for water and help went unnoticed and only the barest semblance of service (delivering the food) was observed.
All this said, I probably will go back - the pull of their sangria is that compelling. But I'll be there with a deeper critical palatte, eye, and opinion. read more
