I didn't think I could find a new favorite chocolate, but I should know better than to underestimate Rob! Tonight, he introduced me to the first & last, a sun dried tomato, white chocolate and dark chocolate (I think) delight that I enjoy even more than the sweet Stephanie and marzipan confections that I often dream about at night! I love that there's always something new, exotic, and unexpected to try each time I visit. And I also tried a NY cream egg drink- I want to drink this nectar of the gods everyday! It's iced hot chocolate mixed with Coke. I can't. It's just too good. I also picked up thick, crunchy peanut brittle for my husband. That's also GONE! Not only is the chocolate divine and exceptional quality for a very reasonable price- you get what you pay for- Rob treats my five year old like a princess. Annaveigh loves going in for the white chocolate blueberry truffles and to see the pretty chocolate point shoes. If you are on Main Street, skip dessert at Amici and go see Rob instead. I promise you won't be disappointed. Ask questions and enjoy each piece. Life is too short to not to eat good chocolate, and you're supporting a small business owner as well. My boyfriend and I were walking around Middletown for the first time when we came across this heavenly place! We went in just for a peek, but ended up staying there for three hours! The owner is a kind, fun, and knowledgeable and gentleman. When he offered us the opportunity to help him make some chocolates, we immediately cleared our schedule. Not only did we have an amazing experience, but we met someone that was really passionate about what he did, and shared it with the community. For those of you that love a chocolate experience; this is the place for you! For those thinking about your wallet; try opening your mind to what goes into making these little drops of heaven. If you really love chocolate and appreciate them as much as we do, the price won't matter. Every hint of spice and exotic flavor can take you to a different place and time. I go to this shop because they are very attuned to food allergies and have chocolate that my dairy allergic husband can eat. It is such a treat for him! The owner is very nice-and very chatty so be sure to put enough money in the parking meter. I have never been able to get in and out of there quickly. The "store" is claustrophobic and disorganized which drives me crazy but that could be true of all artists. This chocolatier is definitely an artist! And the prices are indicative of a master. I came here and had the Irish ginger, Habanero and US Mint. The U.S. Mint was more spearmint than peppermint. I thought they were okay. The chocolate quality could have compared to "Andes" chocolate candies. Glad to know there are chefs here (chocolatiers), but for being professionals, they don't put out high quality chocolate. read more

We happened to be in Middletown for dinner and went in around closing time on a Friday night. The owner was very friendly and was very detailed when introducing every piece of chocolate we picked. We had three: heart felt hope, amici's, and a night in Tunisia (named Tunisia but shaped like a Singaporean Merlion..). All were pretty good. We especially liked heart felt hope and amici's. Chocolate almond bark should have almonds IN the chocolate not just sprinkled on top. That was a bummer- the choc covered marshmallows were pretty good! DO NOT waste your money on the tasting tour! Even with the Living Social discount it is a complete waste of time and money. I don't know why they call it a tour, there is no tour. You just stand in one place in the very crowded back room and watch him and his assistant bumble around the kitchen. It is not interactive at all and you will not be making anything yourself. For the almost three houres we stood there, most of what we saw was him cleaning the granite slab. He made one small tray of chocolates which we did not even get to taste. The whole place seemed very unsanitary. Dirty bowls everywhere and he'd keep scraping the dried chunks back into the main chocolate vat. Noone wears gloves when they are handling the chocolate or fillings and he has long dirty fingernails. Not to mention that he cut himself and actually bled into the chocolate- someone else in our tour pointed it out- but not before some of it went back into the vat- so gross. I love chocolate but it made me think twice about ever eating homemade chocolates again. The tasting portion was somewhat interesting but it was still just tasting the small chips that they melt to make the chocolate and he doesn't explain it very well. We did take home 4 pieces of chocolate but they were just OK. They had some cute chocolate shoes in the cases but they were almost $100 apiece. Overall hugely disappointed. read more

I came here with my boyfriend for a chocolate tour from out of town and, I admit, I had my doubts because of the quiet area. We had different expectations. But these expectations no longer mattered when we were greeted by the owner on the street because we had gotten lost. From the moment we walked in to the shop to the end of our tour (and after another hour of lingering and getting to know more about the mastermind), the service by all employees were outstanding, professional, warm, and fun. Took a "tour" this past Sunday. Let's start off with a positive. I thought the chocolate was wonderful. I have different thoughts about the establishment and the owner. I would hardly call it a tour as we basically stood around for 3 hours and 45 minutes and watched the owner and staff stumble over each other while making chocolates for a large order due the next day. There was some interactive time but it was limited. The place is VERY SMALL and packed the gills with supplies etc. It was very uncomfortable and made it difficult to move around. One of the first things that disappointed me was that nothing was prepared for the tour. It seemed as if the tour and guests came as a surprise to the owner. The owner was unfocused, completely unprepared and a poor manager. His lack of planning resulted in him snapping at his staff, one in particular, as if the lack of planning and organization was their fault. I was very disappointed in that aspect of things and it made for some uncomfortable moments while he berated his staff. Additionally, the lack of prepardness and organization made the "tour" a lot longer than it needed to be. By hour 3 I was zoning out. The tasting was good fun and informative. The take home chocolates were good as well. I think this could be a great event if things were prepared ahead of time, the space was cleaned and organized and the owner manged his staff better. At this point, I would not recommend it. read more

I'm writing this review, even though I haven't tried a single chocolate yet. I was walking past from lunch and decided today's snow day makes a good day for chocolate. I went in and after a moment, was told about all the bonbons Rob made, their flavors and small stories behind their names. I selected 5 and he added 1 for me to try. I found Rob to be absolutely charming. We sat down and talked a bit about random things and it made the experience all the better. Once I get home I will try them, but I recommend visiting here just to talk to Rob alone! read more

Thanks for your response. The date I wrote the review is not the same date I was in your store. I am actually a very easy going person and enjoy many, many places I go to. I only give negative critiques to the few places over a few years that I really hated. The reason I used hate for your place was described, but I did enjoy the chocolate itself, which is really the most important. I also would suggest that you have two separate chocolate cases, one for the high end with high end ingredients and the other case for average people and college kids who may not want to pay such a high price or care that the best products are being used. This way you will cater to all groups, not just the group willing to pay the higher price. I mentioned the money because my husband is a tax accountant and the first rule of going somewhere is that if they don't ring it up, then it's a non-sale and the Gov't gets cheated on the income. It also looked very awkward and unsanitary going in to get change. I wish you no harm and much luck. It looks like a fun but hard business to be in. Yes, I found your talking to be annoying, but hey, it's your store. I would actually come in again if you had more choices in the mid range of prices. Otherwise I'll go to other chocolate stores where I pay as an example $2 per piece instead of $4 per piece. To some people the price outweighs the taste. To others they are willing to pay a higher price. Again, it's Middletown and most people there are working class not high society. Good luck to you. read more

We REALLY enjoyed our Chocolate Making Class at Tschudin Chocolates!! Our children gave us the class as a Christmas present. There were a total of four in the class on a Sunday afternoon in February. The owner, Rob, was extremely personable, interesting and knowledgeable and it's clear he loves making chocolates. Rob made sure we understood each step of the process before moving on to the next and now we can make chocolates at home. He taught us a lot - for example what the different percentages of chocolate mean and are used for. The class is very hands-on and we had a lot of fun making (and eating) DELICIOUS truffles, tempering chocolate and learning how chocolates are made. We each brought home some of the truffles we made. Rob and his assistant, Debra, made the class a fun, enjoyable experience. They're friendly and are clearly comfortable working together. We don't know how anyone could take the class and not find it worthwhile and enjoyable!! p.s. their hot chocolate is out of this world!! read more

I am 56 and just had the Best chocolate I have ever eaten: surprising, smooth, rich and creamy. It was the signature chocolate, "A Night in Tunisa," at Tschudin Chocolates on the corner of Main and Court. There were flavors of cardamom, spice, maybe nutmeg. Every once in a while, you have the good fortune to meet someone who adds a little something wonderful to your life. For my 9-year old daughter and me, that someone was Robert - the "Willy Wonka of Middletown." I had called to ask about a little chocolate-making-and-tasting class for the two of us, and was immediately met with the most helpful and accommodating (and eloquent!) of shop owners. Robert listened to our wishes, respected our budget, and created an afternoon that was both educational and entertaining, ambitious and delicious, and just down right fun. We watched (in awe!), we stirred (with purpose!), we poured (with care!), we made and crafted and created (with enthusiasm and pride and joy!) . . . My daughter was treated to hot chocolate and cooled ganache, Cinderella confections and a watermelon freeze, and - in her words - "as many amazing facts in my head as sweets in my tummy." When we left Robert's little shop of wonders, Tschudin boxes and bags in hand, we felt that our world was a little happier, a little brighter - and of course, very much sweeter. The chocolate ice cream is the best I've ever had and is undoubtedly made on site (two ice cream makers sitting on the counter). Yes, it's expensive. Have the people giving negative reviews due to price ever been to a boutique chocolate shop before? It's EXPENSIVE. If you want cheap, go buy a candy bar at the gas station. The owner was a very nice and knowledgeable man that went into great depth explaining his products and processes. I had no idea making chocolate was so complicated. We were acknowledged as soon as we walked in the door even though he was busy with other customers. Yes, the retail area is cluttered with seemingly random items... but who cares? There's a slot machine and an organ, a large picture of an oriental market, and fridge full of what looked like random local farm items... none of which interfered with my ability to enjoy my ice cream and converse with the owner. This charming little cafe is amazing! The owner is so nice, he asked if I wanted to help him in the kitchen, and it was so much FUN!! The hot chocolate was rich with pure chocolate and steamed milk. If you appreciate fine chocolates, as well as cooking, the chocolate making class is for you. I saw a Groupon for the introductory chocolate-making class, and I decided to make a present to my wife. We like cooking, and my wife has decent baking skills. So, we thought we would try it. Rob (owner of the place, very attentive and charismatic) warned us that the class would last 4-5 hours, depending on how well the process will go. There were 4 people in our class (including us). Champagne and orange juice were served at the beginning of the class. It started with the video, explaining history of chocolate, as well as chocolate making process, including tempering and crystallization. The video lasted about 30-40 minutes, and the second video did not start, so we proceeded to the "hands-on" part, the making of the chocolate truffles. The class was well-organized. Most ingredients were prepared before we started, and kitchen space was well-utilized by our group. Each person had a chance to participate directly in every step of the process, from tempering and making the Ganache to coating to rolling in the chocolate "powder". We also compared various types of commercial chocolate that can be used in the candy making, and found all of them delicious. There were no delays or interruptions in the class, except two times when customers came in to get some chocolates. While the chocolate Ganache was cooling and the chocolate for coating was mixing, we watched a second video, much shorter than a first one. At the end of the class the group got some of the truffles made in the class, as well as some of the pre-made candy from display. I asked Rob for a few recipes, and he was happy to provide them. All-in-all it was a very educational and pleasant experience for us. While we do not have granite counter at home, we do have a fairly large marble board. So, I think we will try one of the recipes we got. read more

This was our second stop on the chocolate trail and I have mixed feelings on it. The biggest issue was selection. There was very little for us to choose from and it was only a touch past noon. The display case itself was very small and I can't imagine it having that much more then what was already present. However, what we did have was very good. The flavors were a home run on the palate, especially the ones that had alcohol in them. They had just a hint of the alcohol, but not enough to overpower everything else which happens much to frequently Our first stop on the chocolate trail set a very high bar for any of the other stops on the trail to be judged against. I will not name that place, but I did feel Tschudin feel short of what they offered. That being said, if I was in the area again and passing by I would likely stop in and get 2 or 3 items. However, I would not go out of my way to come back. Then one might say why did it get 4 stars? Well the first stop on the trail set a bar I am not sure any store will top so by default I would return there. If that stop had not been in the equation then I wouldn't mind coming to Tschudin more often. They are certainly worth a shot, but they are not the top of the trail for sure. read more

I'm not even a chocolate lover, but I love this little shop! Having more of a savory palate when it comes to sweets, I LOVED all the choices at Tschudin. I tried chocolates with cumin, ginger, and some other exotic spice blend that I couldn't get out of my head. The habanero was a favorite with my husband. But the best part of this place is the owner, who when I stopped in with my 8 year old son, treated him to a lifelong memory. My son was able to come around the counter and look at the swirling vats of goodness, push buttons, and generally feel like he was an apprentice for the moment. He was in HEAVEN! He also got a pretty hefty amount of "freebies" in terms of tasting in the process. I will definitely be back for the savory sweets offered here.
