Despite the fact Bridgewater has locations that are closer to me, the shop on LaSalle in West Hartford Center (charming in its own right, and reminiscent of many town centers in Westchester County, NY) was my initiation into their line of fine, decadent chocolates. The shop itself is as tidy as it is tiny. The staff was pleasant and didn't try to "push" anything. They had sugar-free chocolates to which I could treat a very special family member. Their Orange Crisp bar far exceeded my expectations in terms of quality and luxuriousness and has become an instant favorite. I don't indulge in sweets that often, but Bridgewater may very well have changed that! read more

Bridgewater chocolate provides the perfect gift for someone. The inside of the place is small but they do a good job putting everything on display. I liked Bridgewater Chocolate ("BC") before they were in West Hartford Center. I had heard about BC from a Best Chocolate list. The list suggested that BC had great traditional chocolates, while another CT chocolatier had a modern European style. Both great, but different. I remember going to a store in Bridgewater, CT many years ago, but I don't think it was actually a Bridgewater Chocolate store. That store sold BC's high end classic chocolates like turtles, toffees, patties and caramels though. I bought a bunch and thought they were outstanding. I already thought that West Hartford Center was kind of a cool place, but when the West Hartford Bridgewater Chocolate store first opened, I knew it for sure. With its beautiful chocolates displayed like expensive jewelry, the West Hartford store feels like a high end chocolate boutique that would be at home in Beverly Hills. Sometimes, I feel under-dressed when I go. I'm afraid they're going to kick me out Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman-style, but the BC staff never makes me feel that way. They welcome me and offer me a free taste of chocolate. It always works. I buy a few extra. If you like things done in a classic way, but at the highest possible level, BC is your place. The chocolates have perfect shapes and colors. If you don't like the look of a circle with uniform color, they've got stripes. Don't like long, flat and smooth pieces, they'll rough it up with some chopped nuts. You only want to buy chocolate in the shape of a top hat? That's kind of weird, but they've got you anyway. The toffee breaks in your teeth the exact way you had hoped it would. The nuts and caramel in the turtles crunch and stretch simultaneously. The caramels ooze when you bite into them. The milk chocolate tastes smooth and sweet, and the dark chocolate tastes deeply bittersweet and complex. You can buy curated boxes of chocolates in very cool boxes if you're buying gifts. You can also order by the piece and select the exact ones you want. BC has things like bars and containers of chocolate covered pretzels. Love the pretzels. Even BC's bags are classy. Food-wise, Bridgewater Chocolates is one of the most respected names outside of CT. It's 5 Stars for me every time. read more

Wide selection of delicious high-end chocolates that was a feast for the eyes. My husband and I got the chocolate ginger and chocolate top hat. It came out to about $5 or $6, which is reasonable. The ginger was smooth and tangy, and clearly has fresh ginger inside. The top hat had the perfect molded shape and broke into a subtle crunch so nicely. I just wish they had some options when it comes to dark chocolate because they were lacking in that aspect. read more

I absolutely love Bridgewater Chocolate!! Their chocolate is high quality and delicious and has absolute ruined any other chocolate for me. I am very picky about my dark chocolate because most places burn the cacao during processing, but this little shop has won my heart with their perfectly crafted flavors! My favorite treat has to be their dark chocolate covered English toffee and their bark... it's to die for! Their customer service is almost better than their chocolate. A lovely young lady named Keely walked me through their entire selection and helped me create a wonderful gift box for my graduating nephew. She really knows her stuff! All in all, I give this place my full approval. I will be dropping by again the next time I am in WeHa! read more

It's a good thing I'm not in WeHa often anymore or I'd have no money anymore and would gain weight from chocolate consumption. My husband and I came in here for some dessert and man are we both glad we did. I highly recommend the pilgrim hat chocolates or the heart shaped truffles, they were absolutely incredible. Jay's a big fan of the chocolate shaped golf balls and hasn't shared with me, so I'm guessing they're super good. Next time we're in WeHa, we'll be back to sample more chocolates. Oh. I loved going to Bridgewater Chocolate. The customer service was great, the chocolate was great, and I will absolutely be coming back. My wife, who is picky with her chocolate, was also a huge fan of the chocolate and is glad that we decided to stumble upon this store one day. EDIT 1/30/18: The retail manager for the chain contacted me. I'd made an error in the pricing. The paragraph about the Turtles is edited to reflect the price of $22.00, rather than the $36.00 I quoted earlier. I'd incorrectly recalled the price of an item we decided not to buy. The response was rapid and very nice -- so we'll make good on our promise to try some of their *other* products. LaSalle Road in West Hartford is a great place to eat, shop, and, well, indulge oneself (and has been, since we lived on Pelham in the '80s and '90s). We're all for change, but LaSalle's now almost unrecognizable. It's trying too hard to compete with the exorbitant, mediocre mayhem (that we've chosen to ignore) going on at Blueback Square. LaSalle's morphed, unpleasantly, from time-honored traditional merchants to new, edgy, expensive upstarts. We'd seen Bridgewater Chocolate's CEO hawking his wares on the NBC affiliate's news program. He successfully did his job -- he got us to go into the store (we weren't so excited that we dialed them up on the internet -- web orders are taken gladly). The store raised our eyebrows because it actually beats Godiva at the packaging game. We've not seen such lovely gifts in a long, long time. Box after box in black leatherette with gold-tone hinges and appointments, wrapped in lovely paper and sealed with a humongous, golden bow plumped-up with plenty of sizing. It's like a huge, golden acid trip of decadence. Back to the goods -- the company's founder, on television, told us of a "new" kind of candy which blends old-world goodness with a more modern American sensibility about chocolates. The rap got us -- hook, line and sinker. We entered the store from the street as if we were hypnotized by the promise of something different, wrapped-up in one of the most fantastic packages we've ever seen, for consumables. And the stand-out offering, for me, was the confection that combines caramel, pecans, and chocolate -- years ago my grandmother and aunts would buy "Turtles," and later on in my kitchen I'd create a decadent cake which combines those flavors and textures, we loved the stuff so much. That, my friends, is what pulled me like a magnetic, irresistible force, into the store, and further caused me to part with $22.00 of my wampum for six lovely candies, encased in a metal-hinged box, wrapped in beautiful, coated, silk-screened paper, and finished with a bow, as described hereinabove. Oh, what are we to do? A younger, more self-conscious "me" would have kept my mouth shut. How, after all, is one to admit to other rational human beings that he'd spent an irrational sum for six tiny tidbits of dessert? Explain it away as an attempt to re-create the lovely offerings made by mature relatives to a young person, un-educated in the business of relieving the populace of its disposable income? Discard the suggestion that I'd been extravagant by invoking the tired, hackneyed, "but I'm worth it!"? I'd hazard a guess you know where this is leading. The chocolate is waxy and not sufficiently sweet. I understand understatement, but this is just sloppy -- and at this price-point, one's looking for decadence, not minimalism. Just sayin'. The caramel, pliant and delicious, was very sparingly -- too sparingly -- incorporated. These were not *sweet* confections. Finally, the nuts had the skins on (sloppy at near $40 a pound), and hadn't been refreshed prior to making the candy. This results in a kind of semi-raw, semi-stale flavor, even though the nuts may be quite fresh. I must admit, dear reader, that I don't have the means to take another expensive gamble on this firm. The confection they hawked on television wasn't what it promised. Please, please, Bridgewater Chocolates, please decide whether or not you're going to go whole-hog on your promise of "American Flavors," or cave to the people who'd rather just chew on a piece of baker's chocolate, in the name of self-deprivation disguised as a need for no sugar nor no "gluten." Either way, you are asking your customer to part with far more money that he or she thinks is reasonable for what's really no better, actually worse, than drug-store candy assortments. read more

another one we came across and were pleasantly surprised to see popping up in west hartford over there by penzeys and that shishkabob house i keep meaning to check out ... well, thats what we thought at first. first thing to note - chocolate here is not cheap. we bought a few pieces and overall i can say the quality was OK but i have had better for less... but when they tell you that what you are paying like $3 for is a chocolate with mint and you get home and its caramel, that sucks - especially when you are not a caramel fan. in a high end store your staff should know what they are selling. will i go back?? doubt it. wholefoods isnt too far away and has an ok section of fancy chocolates that are clearly labelled and you get what you expect to get.- no disappointment. i wanted to like this place. bummer. read more

As most of the other Yelp reviewers have stated - this place has AMAZING chocolate. I went in today just to get a snack while waiting for my friends. I got 2 pieces of chocolate - 1 piece of English toffee (the chewy kind) and 1 piece of Irish? toffee (crunchy). They were both delicious, but the non-English one was my favorite. The person behind the counter was extra helpful in explaining the different kinds of chocolate and didn't judge me for only ordering a very small quantity. The two pieces rang up to about $2.15, which might sound pricey, but it was well worth it to me, because of just how amazingly delicious it tasted. Well done! read more

But then I went back and got other things and discovered I really really love their chocolate coated crunchy toffee sweets. I read somewhere that this is Oprah's favorite chocolate. Now I'm not necessarily an Oprah fan but when it comes to food she's had access to so much variety (avoiding jokes about quantity) that her opinion must have some merit. I stopped by Bridgewater to give it a try. I selected 10 pieces of chocolate. A mix of solid Belgian milk and dark chocolates some solid other filled with caramel. This really is exceptional chocolate. Smooth and creamy and leaps and bounds above your average hershey bar. Where Bridgewater really shines though is their caramel. It's the perfect blend of buttery saltiness and sweet and it's impossibly creamy. It's not cheap though. My 10 pieces of chocolate cost me about $13 so I won't be a regular but I don't think I'll be able to resist repeat visits. read more

Bridgewater Chocolate has decadent treats that are worth every calorie. Their dark chocolate is beyond compare. Every time I've gone in I've been offered a sample never have I been offered a bite I did not thoroughly enjoy. I even loved the sample that had toasted coconut in it and I am an avowed coconut hater. The fact they can make coconut taste good to me is a testament to their talent.
