2 bags of popcorn, chocolate pretzels, chocolate graham crackers, chocolate Oreos, chocolate NutterButter, and a variety pack
Ryan B.

Big fan of this cozy little candy shop in downtown Wallingford. I was in desperate need of some last-minute Christmas gift fillers, and I was fortunate enough to stumble across the Sweet Cioccolata as it is on my way to the train station on the same road. I walked in, took a quick look around and picked out the bags of candies/chocolates illustrated in the photo below. For the haul shown, I spent slightly less than $60, which admittedly is a bit steep, but the packaging is extremely appealing (no need to wrap/modify) and they were very well-received on Christmas Day. I also had the good fortune of chatting with Rachel (store owner) for a few minutes and it is no wonder they've been in business for ~16 years. Highly recommend keeping this place in mind if you are looking for thoughtful gifts with small-town charm.

The price tag will make me steer clear of this place, but this cute little shop greets you with the rich smell of chocolate when you walk in. Who can resist a visit? The service was friendly. There are sample chocolates in a little bowl when you come in. They tasted slightly stale, but oh well. Get a little nibble! I had a chocolate covered Oreo. There's a glass case with several little chocolate treats like truffles. I ordered two peanut butter cups. They were thick and large with a creamy interior and smooth chocolate. I enjoyed them, but I like See's Candies chocolate better. Plus, the two cups were pricey! They also offer several ready-to-go packaged items, like pretzels and assorted goodies dipped in chocolate. There were also bags of turtles, Rice Krispies, and marshmallow pops. If you're in the mood for a caramel apple, they have those too!

You may know I have a frozen dessert addiction so I had scoops of the following flavors: Coconut, Chocolate, All'Oreo, and Espresso Macarpone Chocolate gelato, AND Passionfruit Peach and Blood Orange Raspberry sorbet (oh how the pieces of fruit and seeds in the sorbet let you know it's locally made with love). Why did it take us so long to visit? I suppose their limited hours (Tuesday to Friday) had a lot to do with it, but we did visit today and I'm very glad we did. Why? Well, here ya go... 1) Thompson Chocolates goes way back to 1879 and has been in Meriden since Day One. They are one of the first chocolate companies in America. 2) The store is gorgeous and beautifully organized with colorful displays of chocolate bars, pops, bark, gift boxes, chocolate coins and cigars, and jellybeans. 3) We met the owner Jackie, who was one of the very nicest, friendliest, and generous business owners we've ever seen. 4) We walked into a BOGO sale of leftover Easter candies and scored a nice bag of Dark Easter Eggs and an Easter Goodie Bag for zippo 5) Jackie was super generous and tossed four gift bags of assorted chocolate into our shopping bag as freebies. 6) You get a 10% discount with your Yelp check in. 7) They have a 10% Senior Citizen discount on Wednesday and a military discount every day. 8) They have a mail order business through an on-line store. 9) We paid under $22 for a box of dark chocolate raspberry jellies, two Easter Goodie Bags, two bags of Easter Dark Chocolate Eggs, and four small mesh gift bags of assorted chocolates. One was white chocolate which will be a perfect treat for my granddaughter who won't eat milk or dark chocolate. I sure hope that gives you an idea of how great our visit to Thompson was.

We were greeted with a mostly empty display with lots of stuff everywhere. We did manage to get a small group of treats at a fairly high price point, but the attention to detail and quality of the chocolates produced were at levels typically not seen in Connecticut or even around the US. Ever since that first meeting, we try to make the trek here to get a few delectable treats to savor once in a while. The owner is very relaxed and uses his place as a ramshackle display of personality and skill. It's not prim and polished, but there's a few pieces usually on display, a subtle sweet smell in the air, and many interesting flavors and fillings of truffles dotting the display cases. Like a master tailor, this place is known by those who know. They look past the grit and enjoy the true gem. It's really good chocolate, pricy but worth it, and worth a trek.

We time we opted in for the 12 piece pack, instead of the 6 to try a variety of different flavors. My favorite is the Knights of Tasmania, which is milk chocolate with hints of heat/pepper. My other favorite is First and Last. It is a tomato, flavored chocolate, but don't let the combination fool you. It is a very smooth and creamy chocolate. There is no way to describe it except you must try it. It is VERY good! The prices are a little expensive, but what do you expect for good chocolatier craftsmanship and good chocolates? This is not your average go to the corner store and purchase a box of chocolate. The time taken and the effort put into these chocolates is worth the money! The flavors are simply mind blowing, and nothing that you would normally put together and some of the more unique flavors

I sampled one flavor that I thought was decent, but I decided to order the Red Velvet Cake flavor which looked good and tasty. I liked the Red Velvet Cake flavor. It was a bit of a cheat code in the best possible way. I mean -- combine ice cream and one of the best cakes, and you're ahead of the game. The waffle cone was good too, but it had a big hole in the bottom. Luckily, I noticed Dixie cups on the counter. So I just placed the cup under the cone. Service was pleasant and efficient. Sundae Afternoon was a good ice cream shop and is worth visiting. I wouldn't say it's with the top tier CT places though. Four Stars

Upon arriving, the ladies serving you were the sweetest. Offering us a taste of the ice creams, announcing their specials and pointing out pre-made frozen treats in a separate freezer across from the main counter. The main counter has all the hard ice creams on display. They have hard ice creams from The Ice Cream Club, a company from Florida. This is my first time trying this ice cream and different the other ice cream shops in the area who serve Giffords Ice Cream, Praline's Ice Cream, etc. They have a few dairy-free options too. I got two scoops of the Stellar Coffee flavor. The ice cream was light, rich coffee flavor with a thick fudge swirl and a generous amount of mini dark chocolate coffee cups. My husband tried the Strawberry Shortcake Bomb, their take of the Good Humor bar. There was strawberry ice cream in the center, wrapped in vanilla, and rolled in the strawberry shortcakes pieces. They had other fun flavors and treats like a Neil's Donut Ice Cream Sandwich (would love to try this next). Sundae Afternoon is in a great area that we pass by often. It's next to a Subway and across the street from the Yalesville Veterinary Hospital. They have dog friendly ice cream treats too. For a small shop, it's very open. The dining area is spacious, walls painted in a fun, bright orange color. Can't wait to see more of Sundae Afternoon and what they have in store when the weather heats up!
