I received a candy apple from Sweet Cioccolata, and it was amazingly delicious. This huge apple was covered in caramel and coated with M&M's. Then covered in a thick layer of chocolate. For October, it was decorated with a white and orange drizzle, and at the large chocolate base topped with candy corns. I've interacted with the Sweet Cioccolata crew a few different times now, but I first purchased something from their tent at the recent Celebrate Wallingford Festival. I tried a milk chocolate covered Oreo and a dark chocolate covered pretzel with caramel. Both were delicious. Service has always been friendly. Big fan of this cozy little candy shop in downtown Wallingford. I was in desperate need of some last-minute Christmas gift fillers, and I was fortunate enough to stumble across the Sweet Cioccolata as it is on my way to the train station on the same road. I walked in, took a quick look around and picked out the bags of candies/chocolates illustrated in the photo below. For the haul shown, I spent slightly less than $60, which admittedly is a bit steep, but the packaging is extremely appealing (no need to wrap/modify) and they were very well-received on Christmas Day. I also had the good fortune of chatting with Rachel (store owner) for a few minutes and it is no wonder they've been in business for ~16 years. My family calls this place "Sweet Crack-o-lotta". There is a bit of sticker shock when you're looking at the prices, but you get a lot for your money. The smallest platter has about 80 pieces on it. We order these for Christmas, Easter, various holidays and celebrations, funerals, etc. Or you can just stop by and get a little something for later. My newest favorite offering are the chocolate-covered peanut-butter-filled pretzel bites. The hours can be a bit awkward -- they close if they have a delivery, and don't always put a sign on the door -- but just try to stop by again. The easiest thing to do is to order over the phone and arrange a pickup time. read more

The price tag will make me steer clear of this place, but this cute little shop greets you with the rich smell of chocolate when you walk in. Who can resist a visit? The service was friendly. There are sample chocolates in a little bowl when you come in. They tasted slightly stale, but oh well. Get a little nibble! I had a chocolate covered Oreo. There's a glass case with several little chocolate treats like truffles. I ordered two peanut butter cups. They were thick and large with a creamy interior and smooth chocolate. I enjoyed them, but I like See's Candies chocolate better. Plus, the two cups were pricey! They also offer several ready-to-go packaged items, like pretzels and assorted goodies dipped in chocolate. I had to give them 5 stars. We walked in less than 24 hours before our event and left with the PERFECT reasonably priced (for handmade, fresh chocolate) selection. Then we tasted what we purchased and the fifth star was earned. Delicious, creamy and adorable. The pretzel with caramel and chocolate dip was amazing. It was so funny watching everyone at the event with the same rapturous expression as they bit into the pretzel. Walking into the shop I couldn't help but admire the aesthetics. This is well designed family owned chocolate shop with plenty of potential. The shop is small however there is a large enough variety of chocolate sweets, to match your craving. From dark chocolate bark with almonds, cashews, or peanuts, to milk chocolate truffles, chocolates with spices, and chocolate dipped chips. The price is rather high for the servings which vary from bag to bag for the same item. The chocolates are wrapped in a thin clear plastic like cellophane. Choose carefully. I put many aside before choosing two bags of chocolate bark that did not have a lot of dried chocolate crumbs or tiny shavings in it. Some looked like they had been there or handled for quite some time. The ones mentioned above seemed very dry as well (chalky). As far as customer service goes, I came into the shop last Friday afternoon for and stood by the counter walking around for 7 minutes before ever being greeted (which only happened after I reopened the door at shut it a second time). The employee that greeted me was kind and simply left the front of the store when I told her I was just looking at the moment. When she did return, I gave her the items I wished to purchase and asked her for her opinion if she had known of any other chocolates that were not too sweet as they were a gift and I purchased two versions of dark chocolate. She then directs me to a $50-$60 box of mixed chocolates, to which I did not purchase and was a mixture of the complete opposite of what I had been looking for. The customer service here seemed to lack. Taking an interest in a possible customer's purchase will increase your sales as well as acknowledgement or greeting of a shopper. I came here to support a local business and buy quality chocolates above else, however the service made me question any purchase at all. The employee seemed more focused on the conversation she was having with another person in the other room. This place definitely deserves 3 stars for the quality of the chocolates regarding the taste. They were good. I also appreciated their small paper gift boxes, and that the employee removed the price of each bark ($7 a bag). However I would have purchased more and would have gladly spent the money if the customer service was improved upon or even attempted, and if the quality looked to be well kept (from the taste it seems to be, however with the lack of customer service and the visual appearance of some of the chocolates, I couldn't help but question the care or rotation of the chocolates, let alone knowing when they were made). I believe this shop has a lot of potential, and the chocolates did taste good, do not let this review fool you. There is simply more to the experience that the chocolates themselves, and if purchasing items as a gift (which the decor and prices seemed to support) you'd expect greater care and detail. read more

I'm writing this review at a time of year when I'm finishing all the chocolates I bought and received for Christmas while simultaneously trying to adhere to some kind of healthy diet as part of a New Year's resolution. The chocolate from Sweet Cioccolata is worth all of the cheat calories, and its quality surpasses all of the other sweet treats I have in my home. My fiance and I discovered Sweet Cioccolata from visiting Redscroll Records, which is two doors away in the same building. If we're treating ourselves to records, we're also treating ourselves to chocolate on the way home. Everything we've had from here has been delicious, and it's won every unofficial taste test I've conducted - the chocolate covered caramel pretzels are so much better than the popular brands of chocolate caramels I received for Christmas, and the chocolate covered Oreos are smoother and better quality than others I've found at the grocery store. My fiance makes sure to get me something from Sweet Cioccolata to add to my gifts every holiday, and I look forward to these chocolates every Christmas, Valentine's Day, birthday, anniversary, etc. read more

My father passed away one week ago today. As a thank you, to the loving staff at Yale New Haven Hospital, that took care of my father in his last days, we ordered a platter of chocolate to be sent. When we placed our order, we were very specific that it go to "the South Pavilion, floor 6-4, trauma surgery day staff. We were advised by the person that took the order, that they could not promise delivery yesterday or today,but certainly by April 26th. This afternoon, we received a phone call, voicemail, from Rachel advising that they were unable to locate the place for delivery. When I returned the phone call, I was advised by Rachel that the "young girl went to two locations, in the rain and could not find the trauma 'center'". I tried to explain that it is not a trauma center, but again gave the specific instructions and advised that it was at the 20 York Street entrance. Rachel kept referring to the "trauma center" and I kept trying to correct her. We then hung up and I was advised they would try again. Five minutes later, we received a phone call telling us how rude we were and that in 15 years of business, no one ever treated her that way and they were not going to deliver our order, but instead would refund our money. We were extremely insulted and treated very poorly by Rachel. Not only will we never order there again, but tell everyone we know about our horrific experience. read more

2 years ago, my business purchased caramel pretzel rods for all of us from Sweet Cioccalata. I barely was able to get a taste once my wife tried them. Ever since then, I go back for a sweet addition to all my anniversary and birthday gifts to my wife. The caramel pretzel rods come in three flavors and two sizes. They are easily my favorite. But they also have a variety of chocolate covered pretzel rods, graham crackers and other delicious things! I easily recommend this chocolatier. read more

Sweet Cioccolata has been in business for over 10 years and the owner, Rachel, has never had to advertise. That pretty much sums up just how good her confections are; she does a great business and it's all word of mouth (no pun intended). She won't reveal what brand of chocolate she uses but it is sublimely delicious. I'm a dark chocolate fan, and hers is the best around. I love everything there, but especially the chocolate dipped pretzel rods, the chocolate-covered oreos, and the over-the-top apples (by the time she finishes coating them, they are the size of a small child's head!). She has a limited selection of filled chocolates but they are always delicious. It is also a wonderful place from which to get gift baskets for any occasion and I always pick up candy for stocking-stuffers at Christmas. And the added bonus: there is always a bowl with broken bits and pieces on the counter so, while you're waiting for service, there is an instant chocolate fix to keep you happy! read more

I have ordered from Sweet Cioccolata for numerous years and couldn't be more pleased. It is upsetting to see negative reviews regarding this business because I would highly recommend any services given from my past experiences. Last Christmas I ordered a platter to be delivered to my parents and unfortunately when they tried to deliver the platter they were not home. The owner went out of her way to deliver the platter the next day during a snow storm when my parents were home.
