One of the few coffee shops in D.C. that are open late. This is a very cozy spot and you can get a coffee, a drink, a dessert or even get food. I left my bag in the bathroom once accidentally and the staff was very kind to keep it until I came back to get it. This is a great place to catch up with a friend or even get some work done. You'll see both type of people here and won't feel like you are disturbing the ambiance, should you be one or the other. Price-wise this gets a tad bit more expensive because the service is sit-down, so expect to pay tip on top of your drink. That being said--they won't push you to leave if it's a busy day or anything. I LOVE TRYST! The spicy bloody mary is my favorite and by far the best in the DMV. Last time I went I tried the masala chai latte, which was so tasty. Everything I've ever ordered is delicious and the presentation is always lovely. The location is perfect and the inside is so charming. They always have a lot of staff, which is great because they get very busy on the weekends. Had a chaucers cup of tea and it tasted like a floral cider. Which makes sense! So I wanted to give this place a better review. We walked in to order coffee at the counter and when asked if we were eating here we said yes. they suggested to having table side service. Didn't seem like it was required but more suggested. Thought this was interesting considering it just seemed like a coffee lounge where you order and then go sit. So I ordered coffee anyways at the counter and had a seat. Someone brought me a water and a menu though and said oh you already got your coffee. I then informed them I just was going to have coffee when then the waiter scoffed with a "oh alright then". I love coming here because it has a coffee shop vibe but is open late and serves a variety of food and drinks, including alcohol. It gets very busy especially during the weekend but I'm almost always able to find a place to sit. If dining in, you just walk in and find a seat and someone will come take your order The table service is nice but sometimes it can be slow (getting your order taken and then closing out the tab), so I usually come here when I plan to stay for a while and work The menu is quite large! I saw so many people recommend this place so of course it was on my list to visit when I was in town. There was 1 employee taking orders, delivering the food, and cleaning off the tables. He was very efficient but I felt very rushed when he came back a second time and wasn't ready. He also would clear the dishes as soon as my last bite went into my mouth. My husband said he did not feel rushed and there were plenty of people working in their computers here but I just felt extremely rushed through the whole experience. I was also confused if it provided sit down service or if we ordered at the counter. It seemed like a lot of people ordered at the counter and received a number for their order which is why we decided to sit down first to give us a chance to look over the menu. Best part was the pistachio latte. I would recommend coming here for brunch if doing dine in. Otherwise take it to go. I came to do work and was told that they have servers that come around so I should order with them instead of at the counter. More than anything else, I come back to this cafe for the relaxing vibe. There are a lot of seating options to suit every preference. My favorite solo spot is the area with benches toward the back. I like the front area by the windows when I'm there with someone else. There are some stools at the front that seem good for solo dining and people watching. And yes... they also have big couches if you really want to settle in, though they are popular. And group tables, bar seating, etc. There's a mix of social groups, solo diners, and laptop users, some enjoying coffee and some there for drinks. I don't necessarily go here for the food, but it's enjoyable. I tend to go for the $4.50 cheddar biscuit (always hits the spot) or the $11 quiche when I want something more substantial without breaking the bank. The sandwiches always looked kinda pricy to me, but my friend sprang for a sandwich and it was pretty big and the housemade chips were legit, so to each their own. Cappuccinos are always great, and their drink menu is pretty solid for a cafe. I've also been there for happy hour once and I'll definitely be back. I think I got the lavender field cocktail which was discounted for HH and it was delicious! I've also enjoyed a glass of wine and a book with live music in the evening. There was only one drink I didn't like -- an old fashioned which wasn't super balanced. But maybe I was just meant for the fufu drinks. Lastly, the staff are always so, so sweet. It's a situation where you go find your seat and someone will come over. In the odd event someone doesn't come over within 5 minutes, just wave to any passing staff member and ask for a menu. Look at the photo to see the tiny amount of cauliflower that came in the cauliflower-rice salad. The chips are excellent. So solid 3 stars. Edit after finishing our full meal: The vegetarian who ordered the black bean burger found a chunk of chicken in her meal. Unacceptable. Downgraded to 2 stars. Do better. First review of 2022! Alas, I wish it was a 5/5. I went to the website before coming here and loved what the website said - DC's living room. How cute! My brother and I are both in grad school, so we agreed to have a study date here. We arrived and the hostess told us some bar seats at the window were becoming available, we told her that we would wait as the location was not ideal for laptops, notebooks, talking and people watching. We told her we were there to hang out and study. We waited for a short period and she took us to a small circle table, unfortunately it was not big enough for all of our study materials so I asked to be moved. She moved us to a green couch with a table in front of it. As soon as both my brother and I sat down on the couch we looked at each other and silently spoke - this couch is trash and there is no way in heck we could sit there for several hours to eat, hang out and study. So, I asked the hostess to move us...again (color me embarrassed). We were then sat at a table conducive to our needs, thank goodness as I was feeling embarrassed for my needs, but hey shouldn't we be able to be satisfied! Our waitress came over immediately, my brother got coffee and I stuck with water. The coffee they brought out was huge! It was like five cups of coffee in one glass. For food my brother got the veggie breakfast burrito and I got the grilled chicken quesadilla. The food came out quickly and was disappointing, sadly. I thought the quesadilla was a safe choice, but there was something in it that I did not like, so I didn't eat it all. Alright, time to study! I pulled out my laptop, highlighter, pen and notebook and was ready to go. My brother did not. I kept encouraging my brother to pull out his stuff, he had a freakin' book bag, but he did not pull out anything, he did not study (worst study date partner)! He chose to people watch, read a book for leisure, listen to music and try to talk to me...even though I was studying! I will say, this place has a great atmosphere and is the perfect place to study at. They also have a great food menu with many vegan and diet options. I came in the last time early one morning with a lady friend. She was hungry after that crazy night. We thought this was the perfect place. It's loaded with good choices. The coffee is the main thing on the menu, though you can't forget about food. I had a regular drip coffee. It's about $3 for the big mug, which is really big. They have a few non dairy milks. I was impressed by all the vegan choices for breakfast. This time I had the waffle. It's about $8 for a large sized one. There's a small charge for each additional topping. This also is a good place for lunch. It's not very often that I go then because it has really good breakfast. The server comes to your table once you find a spot and each time I've come here (3 times) I haven't had to wait long to be served. Each time I would order a latte with oat or almond milk and on my last visit I tried a bacon, egg & cheese. I really liked the bread it came on and the eggs were freshly cooked and pretty fluffy! I've been coming to this place for years, and I can definitely say that the popularity here has increased. That in itself creates it's own special challenges. Namely, finding a table or place to sit isn't easy by any stretch. I rolled in at around 11am with the hopes of doing some work, but as luck would have it there were zero tables available anywhere. I found a chair at one of the long tables and ordered a blueberry muffin and coffee and thought about what my options were. Even the chair where I was sitting was right next to the high traffic line where people were waiting to place their orders. The other caveat is the level of the groovy music here. I know that this place is hipster and all, but if your goal is to concentrate on code, good luck with that one! OK, let me first say that Trist has been my main stay for, well since they began. Constantine is a fair and honest owner and Andrea has always been amazing. The space is great. The light is great. The food is good. The coffee decent. I have always loved this place. Now, yesterday we went and had two coffees. One was a regular drip coffee, the other was a latte. One bagel with lox caulking in it $14 OK, my bad. And my partner had a turkey with egg and cheese on a bagel. That's two coffees and two breakfast items. Y'all, our bill was over $40. They pieced out every item for the turkey on a bagel instead of just doing a turkey Sammy sub bagel we got charged for oat milk a refill on the coffee plus the 5% service charge, which I have no problem with plus our tip put us close to $50 total, that's again for two coffees and two breakfast items. It's just unacceptable, either we should've been warned that ordering in that way was a problem or somebody should have took a look at that bill and said this is unreasonable. My partner will definitely never go there again, and if I do, I'll be just having tea sorry Constantine and Andrea and all the original staff for years and years. I came here today and was really disappointed with my experience. I got the avocado bagel, which says it's smashed avocado guacamole, with Parmesan cheese, chives, and hard boiled egg. It was NOT good. The guacamole is not fresh, it is very clearly store bought and you can taste it. It has that unpleasant very strong vinegar taste. It was so unsatisfying. I also did not receive any chives on my bagel. I got an iced summer mint tea too, which was just okay. My server was also very disinterested and I felt I was bothering her with my presence. Service was super quick, and I got a wonderful large coffee the size of my head along with an animal cracker (which won me over tbh). I also thoroughly enjoyed the bagel with lox for my breakfast while working, and I was left to my own devices to get some work done, only to be asked if I needed anything else. I ordered the quiche and my friend ordered a hummus bagel. My quiche was okay, less eggy and more crust than I would like. The salad was a nice portion.
