I went to Tryst last Sunday, around 2pm. I liked the cafe vibes but felt the music was a little too loud. It didn't help that our waiter was really quiet, so we had to constantly ask her to repeat things/scream our order over the music. I had the tomato soup and the Jonas (chick pea patty). The soup was refreshing, but the chick pea sandwich was so disappointing. It's described as a patty, but the chick peas were just mashed together and slabbed on the pita. Tryst has been around a while as I've been here 3 times. The first time was WAY back in 2011. All 3 of the times were associated with dates or women. November 2011: Date with a woman from online. I think she was a District dweller. I thought the drink was good as I recall, and I remember it's a cute place with coffee, tea, & even alcohol. Date was decent, but it was one of those one & done. February 2017: I picked this because my friend was performing Live music, which yes, Tryst does have, which is cool. Another online date, on an unseasonably mild rainy night, which I had thought went well, but she ghosted me. September 2022: Over Labor Day weekend that year, I went on a large Meetup walking tour of Woodley Park & Adams Morgan talking about the history of the area. After the long walk, I was hungry & thirsty. I ended up getting a wrap or sandwich as well as a drink. I remember the service being slow. The food was pretty good, the drink was average. They aren't terribly friendly in here. The interesting thing was there was a cute visually impaired woman on the tour who agreed to go with me to lunch here. We had a nice conversation eating on their outside seating on that nice warm day. At the end, I asked for her phone number, and that's when she mentioned her boyfriend! Conclusion: Tryst is a decent option for Adams Morgan. It is a cute place. The drinks are decent, but nothing to write home about. The food was pretty good. I really want to like this place but after giving it multiple chances, I continue to find the customer service to be slow and unfriendly (even sassy), and for an almost $9 dollar (small) seasonal latte I can't say that it's worth it. As someone who's worked in the hospitality industry for years and "gets it" (yes, being understaffed sucks- if that's part of the issue) it never pays off to be rude to your customers. I always try to remain polite and understanding as a customer (since I know the struggle), but would appreciate mutual respect in return. read more

My friends and I popped in here after work for some summer salads and refreshing beverages. We were trying to be healthy and wanted some yummy salads. I landed on the tryst bowl, which was so good! It was full of chickpeas, sweet potato, over a bed of greens topped with dressing. Not too heavy (opted out of adding protein), and it was so filling! Used to be my favorite coffee shop in DC, I came here almost once a week for a couple years straight. But then recently they added a 10% automatic new fee, citing the new DC tip laws. Unfortunately there's no actual explanation as to why this added fee is necessary for the business, just some vague line about the new laws having an effect on small businesses. And to make matters worse , none of the 10% goes towards staff. If there's such a big difference in this new law, the the owners should put out a detailed explanation as to why a 10% upcharge is necessary to sustain the business long-term. Without doing that, it makes it seem like you're just capitalizing on a new law to make more of a profit. The coffee here really is amazing, but it's not worth paying eight dollars for a drink before I can even tip the staff. I will not be coming back to Tryst unless they adequately explain up charging their customers or remote this ridiculous new fee. read more

3.5 star .... Service was excellent ... the atmosphere is awesome ... great place to chill for a bit. It appears they are almost too reasonable with people who may be here all day taking up real estate. I was here 3 days in a row. Quiche Lorraine the first day was very good. Second day spinach and feta croissant with a side of eggs... excellent deal and tastes very good. The third day I had the classic waffle... definitely not impressed with this one. I'm by no means a waffle expert but I do like mine crisp and light... or if its dense for sure not undercooked as this one appeared to be as seen in the photo attached. Yelp's collection of coffee shops in DC and where to find the best lattes is what made me drag my boyfriend on a small trek from the navy yard to Tryst to try their cereal milk latte. It was a warm afternoon and we accidentally got off at the wrong metro stop but the extra steps were worth it! This place has so much character, tons of space to enjoy each others company and your meal, or work at a table or cozy and stylish couch. The space can be opened to the outdoors when it's warm. You can order to go at the bar or have a seat and be served. The service was great and everyone was so friendly. Their in-house coffees came with an animal cracker and the latte art was picture perfect! Can't wait to come back for more! read more

Came in late Sunday afternoon to get a piece of carrot cake to go. While I was greeted immediately and the service was good the carrot cake wasn't. I could see little bits of carrots but I swear it was more spice cake than carrot cake. I've had carrot cake from Tryst and one of their sister restaurants before and it was a true carrot cake. Tryst is a wonderful neighborhood coffee shop with great outdoor seating, a classic cafe menu, and energetic staff. Important note, this is table service ONLY so if you're looking to sit and enjoy a beverage while you work or dodge the heat (as was my case), simply find a spot to sit and someone will be over - no need to wait at the counter. My iced cuban coffee was so refreshing and the perfect little 11am pick me up. I love that coffee drinks come with cutie animal crackers and, while I didn't order food, everything that was coming out from the kitchen looked super yummy. The real star here is the decor and vibe, with everything form bar seating to large couches to standard tables. I'd typically have glowing words to share about Tryst--their Iced Dirty Chai is amazing, Bullfrog bagels offer a quick to-go bite, and there's ample seating across the cozy interior and charming AdMo outside. Today, however, I had an interaction which left me feeling confused and embittered after trying to order a quick beverage to-go. I was waiting for the cashier to be ready while they were in a conversation with the previous customer who had finished ordering, simultaneously working on heating up their food. Their conversation continued for a couple more minutes until I was acknowledged, and although I was in a bit of a rush, I did wait for them to wrap up and be ready. Next, the otherwise pleasant tone of their conversation turned into a blunt Tryst script asking whether I was there to order for here or to-go since they have different procedures for seating people or ringing up a to-go order. I asked for my usual order, which they were out of and asked for a different drink instead. It was loud, and I was wearing a mask since it was pretty crowded inside, so I acknowledge that I may not have been the most easy to understand, but the cashier asked if whole milk was okay to which I responded "Yes, whole milk, please." Afterwards, they flashed a 'W' at me to confirm whole milk and seemed annoyed for having to ask again. This seemed like an odd thing to do as a general practice--the only difference being that I was the only masker in the cafe other than the barista behind the bar and I didn't think we needed to engage in makeshift signing to conclude our interaction. I overall just felt like I was imposing on the cashier's ability to continue their conversation despite having a single-item ticket and ending my order with pleases. The next customer after me was complimented on their hat in a way that felt like a complete 180° compared to how I was being treated just seconds before. I'm not sure if I have the heart to revisit after being treated in such a starkly different way. I truly do not know what I could've done differently to make the interaction more tolerable for the both of us, and it is regrettable that Tryst receives high praise for their service in other reviews which simply was not reflected during my visit today. read more

Man, I love this place. Really, I'm rating this place 5 stars based more on my fond and meaningful experiences there, rather than the food/drinks themselves. It's a perfect funky/eclectic spot to have long philosophical discussions late into the night with friends (though I know it's also popular for teleworking and getting coffee or drinks). Food is good, but personally, I don't think lattes and teas here are the best (though they're still good enough). So far, I've tried the following: - Lox & Bagel - excellent. Very filling with generous portions of smoked salmon - Dacquoise hazelnut cake - amazingggg. There were crunchy nutty layers, buttery and creamy meringue frostings, soft cake layers, and smooth ganache frosting. So many textures and flavors! My friends tried it and immediately got greedy and wanted to eat more of it (which I reluctantly shared hehe). - Carrot cake - good moistness and flavors; not too sweet at all - Double chocolate cake - okay; a tad dry and not as dark/rich as I would've liked (it seemed to be milk chocolate with chocolate frosting, hence the "double chocolate" name, not because it was dark chocolate) - Death by Chocolate waffle (with blackberries instead of strawberries as indicated in Yelp pictures. Weird...) - the waffle was great and very warm and moist, but I think it would've tasted better and more well-balanced with strawberries instead. - Golden milk (with oat milk) - delicious, creamy, slightly sweet - Lavender hot chocolate - delicious, though I'd like it to be a bit richer in chocolate and less sweet, but to each his/her own (I'm a dark chocolate lover so) - Matcha latte - it had a weird chalky taste at the top, which was distracting and detracted from the taste of the latte itself. The latte was quite good and not too sweet, like how some matcha lattes can be, but it was unfortunate about the chalky taste at the top... Coffee and cocktails, should have been a great combo. This place is spacious, many tables to work or catch up with friends. There is a small patio outdoors by the street as well. Tried a lavender lemonade which was quite delicious. Also ordered a winter sangria, for which we waited over 10 mins. Upon checking with the bar staff, turns out there was a confusion about who was making the drink. One of the bartenders then gruffly and rather dismissively made the drink. Pretty bad experience service-wise. Came here during Porchfest so maybe it wasn't a 'typical' day for the establishment, so will give it another shot on a quieter day. read more

I know that this is a community icon but Tryst to me was just fine. I think the warm and inviting staff is the best part of the place. I came here with my roommates to work for the day and was first confused by the lack of light inside and lack of outlets. They seemed to only have outlets on the walls while I'm used to WFH cafes also having floor outlet options. That being said, if you charge your laptop ahead of time, this is a huge space with a lot of seating options. I got a chai latte and it was spicy and delish and served with cute animal crackers. I met friends here for brunch. It's such a cute space. Ambiance - cafe style ambiance with couch, bar, table, and shared table seating. Service - if you are sitting there is table service, though it can be a bit inattentive when it is busy. You have the option of ordering from the counter also, but this mainly seems for takeout. Food - I got the spinach quiche, my dining partners got the tuna melt, bagel with avocado, and the tomato soup. We were all really pleased with our meals. The tuna melt (it is called something you Lee on the menu) was HUGE. The bagel with avocado and hard boiled egg looked underwhelming to me. The espresso machine was down so I can't comment on the barista skills, but they have a cool menu, so hopefully next time I can sample that. read more

I've lived in Adams Morgan for 7 years now and this is my go-to spot when I want to do some work during the day, meet up with friends and I actually went on a date with someone here. Before the pandemic, they had live music and it was really nice to have and just listen to the various artist that came from all over, not just local. I will say it does get crowded after 6:00 p.m. and it seems like there's just a rush that comes in the door. I also believe I ordered some pies from here during special occasions like Thanksgiving etc and they were pretty good. I've gotten a chicken sandwich from here a salad and of course smoothies and coffees. Overall, the staff is very friendly and provides exceptional service. Their coffee is fine not the best but I love the animal crackers on the little saucer they give us. It's like a signature item that I always look for believe it or not. Overall, great atmosphere, a bit noisy, but I like it, and a great meeting spot for anything. My only wish is that they bring back the live music and maybe change up their menu and add more seasonal items which I think would be good to do for this place or just add in tots with bacon cheese and sour cream:) read more

Who has the best coffee in town? Trust, right? Unless of course there is no coffee - even if too have paid for it :( This morning, I was desperate for a Tryst cappuccino. I came in earlyish 7:20. There was no one in line yet. I ordered a cappuccino with an extra shot, paid, left a tip, and then waited and started doing work on my phone. Fifteen minutes later I looked up and noticed that 1) I was still the only one in line, 2) I did not have my coffee and 3) no one had even started making it. I asked the lovely woman behind the counter what was up and she said "the barista is still busy in the back". I asked if he/she knew that an order had been placed and she double checked and said that he should be coming out soon. After a total of 25 min waiting I told her that i needed to go to work - she kindly offered a black coffee and I declined and left. Interestingly, I left my keys behind so walked to my car, then back to Tryst to get my keys - and still no coffee In any case, Tryst has such great food and superb coffee - when you can actually get it. 25 min is too long to wait especially when you are the only one there!
