3.75 Stars. I used to frequent this place when they first opened, I lived nearby, and before it became a victim of its own success. Nowadays you spend a lot of time fighting for space and/or waiting for a table/seat to open up. They do, however, make a decent espresso beverage. The fact that they use Counter Culture roasts, prepared using state-of-the-art grinders, a special filtration system and a La Marzocco GB5 espresso machine should be enough to alert you that they take their coffee seriously. And there is a nice long bar in addition to the requisite comfy chairs and mismatched sofas at which to enjoy your beverage. One of the few Adams Morgans businesses open day and night, they get extra props from me for serving draft beer. It was the only place around that served Otter Creek on tap. Sadly, that's now gone, but it has been replaced by other decent draft choices, including Bell's Two-Hearted Ale (not so down with the draft PBR, an obvious attempt to appeal to the hipsters.) The owner, Constantine Stavropolous is a shrewd businessman and has replicated Tryst's popularity (with limited success, in my opinion) with the Diner and Open City. Great place to hit during the week, particularly during the day, to avoid the bridge and tunnel crowd and nighttime shenanigans. read more

When I was involved in the "dating scene," Tryst was always a popular place to go for drinks while getting to know someone new (for however many G&Ts it takes to break the ice). I really like that they have wireless here. And a coffeehouse/bar is a great concept that probably every neighborhood should have. The wait staff is pretty friendly, but sometimes I feel like the crowd can overwhelm them. If you can't get a seat on the couches though, sitting at the bar is just as good for the nighttime. I like bars. I like food. I like coffee. Tryst combines all of these into one, novel, bar coffee shop. With full liquor license, bar seating, lounge sofas, tables, and loud music - Tryst is a trendy restaurant, cool coffee shop, and bar all into one. There are board games strewn out everywhere. I could easily see this as both a place to pick someone up and even as an early relationship date spot. I cannot understand the people who came to study, or even more so, the ones who put headphones in and read by themselves. What is the point? Go to a quieter shop! This is a hanging out venue. They weren't bothering me, but there is too many distractions and noise polution for me to enjoy a book here. One more thing, 21+ - don't forget your ID. read more

Scenerio: Stuck inside a hospital for 82 hours during Snowmagedon. Released from work, Goal: Alcohol. Thank you Tryst for being open and for serving alcohol in the morning! :D About 6 of us made the hike to Tryst with the goal of consuming as much alcohol as possible to erase the last 82 hours of our lives from memory, instead we had amazing coffee, delcious food and about one alcoholic beverage each- all while enjoying a fun, comfy, non-hospital hang out time! :) It was great! We were there about 20 minutes when the place became packed out, I think they all had the same thought we did! It was great all around, great food, great coffee, great service! I havent been there since but only because it isnt in my neighborhood, but if it was, I'd be a regular for sure! read more

The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is the seating-- without a host/hostess it feels a little like you have to leap on an open seat. Plus, we've been there and had parties hover a little while we finish our coffee. That said, all the food is great. Plus, their chocolate chip cookies are amazing. Seriously. Amazing. read more

Boo, Tryst. Every time I come here it is the same experience: I think to myself, "great, a coffee shop, the perfect place to hang out for a few hours and read." And every time it is the same thing: packed, too dark to read, no internet on weekends, I scramble around for a place to sit that isn't near the mommy circle (not an exaggeration: there was an actual mommy circle with brats last time I went), and when I finally find a table to share and get ignored by the waitress I spend all my energy trying to zone out the conversation about relief efforts in Sudan between the Arab photojournalist and the French humanitarian doctor at the table behind me. I can stand this place for about five minutes before I get irritable. Like the girlfriend who is only too cruel, I wish I were strong enough to quit this place. I think it is the proliferation of type-A former high school vice presidents in DC, but the shortage of regular, relaxed coffee-shops confounds me. read more

I have now started this review for the third time and am still at a loss for words. I have never considered myself particularly eloquent, but I know that Tryst deserves a review beyond my current literary wordsmithery. I am a couch potato through and through. I make sure that my living room is super comfortable, stocked with wine and tasty food, and on a good night a great performer ;-) Tryst is like my home with other people, and I can absolutely get down with that! With their couches and low lights, Trysts sets a mood that is all its own. Its a great place for a first date (done that, loved it), a great place for an after work drink, and an awesome place to bump into Kat S and I sharing a chamomile tea thingy. Good wine list, fun and tasty cocktails, reasonable prices, and a pretty good food menu (if you aren't on a diet).... and a delicious dessert counter! The clencher for me, is that I always feel like I get good service. I seat myself and still within in a few minutes, someone has come over to give me a menu. The staff is polite, attentive, and friendly, and they do all this while still being unobtrusive which again is key for those first dates. Overall if you're going here to unwind after work, on a date, or just to catch up with friends. The environment and food are pretty good, but the service is a little underwhelming. My girlfriend and I went here to work for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, only to discover after we arrived that Tryst doesn't provide Wi-Fi on the weekends. This was a disappointing discovery, especially after driving across the city to come spend the time here. On top of that, our waitress was somewhat less than attentive, requiring us to get her attention multiple times for requests like asking for water, getting our check, and paying to leave. With that being said, the food is good and it's a very clean, comfortable restaurant. I think I would prefer it if it was less of a hybrid between a restaurant and a coffee shop and more of one or the other. Having customers order at the counter and then bringing the food to them seems like it would work a lot better than having wait staff inconsistently checking on customers. read more

Have time to burn in Adams Morgan? Tryst might be the place. Tryst is a fine enough place to stop in at. Its recognizable, the old couches are a classic touch, and its a good place to plan to meet someone -- or to run into neighborhood folks spontaneously. The food is good too. They've got some unique sandwiches, and if you feel like a pint of decent beer or something outside of typical coffee shop fare, you've got choices. The prices are decent. Against them, though, is typically mediocre service from the waitstaff (the layout of the place, which may be a plus in other respects, may help to thwart them -- sometimes I wonder if its understaffed at its busiest periods). Even when it is empty, I find myself disappointed after a quick initial serving. They've turned off the WIFI on the weekends, and I understand why -- they don't want to encourage the kind of behavior where folks sucks up hours while generating little business. During the weekdays, I imagine they get good business from a regular crew of people are working and aren't chained to a desk. But somehow I think the weekend tactic is the wrong angle on solving that problem (if that's it). I like beating the weekend hangover rush at The Diner (owned by the same folks) and then, still ahead of the crowds, getting a coffee and reading the paper at Tryst if I've got more time to burn. For me its convenient and has likable features -- but there's nothing outstanding about this place. read more

This is a very 'eat pray love' type of atmosphere. Attractive yuppies who, after grappling with a modicum of western middle-class self-loathing and guilt during their college years, resign themselves to a self-satisfied life surrounded by kitsch old-world meets new-world decor, crumpets, and a cast of multicultural urbanites to serve them their lattes. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. If you at all identified with Julia Roberts' character, then you will certainly enjoy the ambiance here. The coffee is decent (probably one of the best options in Adams Morgan). There's ample seating, but it is often crowded, which is to be expected in an area with this much foot traffic. Service is okay...understandably slow. Overall, a decent, cute coffee spot where yuppies can feel at home. read more

Tryst is an all-around wonderful place. After moving to Adams Morgan from Ballston, I was looking for a coffeeshop to fill the void in my life left by Northside Social, and Tryst fits the bill and more. On face it's a hipster coffeeshop with comfortable seating and table service, but there is so much more than meets the eye. A full bar with drink specials and rotating craft brews, including locals like DC Brau, A great food menu covering everything from salads to sandwiches to wraps to breakfast food, all of which I've had and have never been disappointed by. A great coffeeshop with Counter Culture offerings and Aeropress in addition to traditional espresso-based drinks. A live music venue on weekend nights. I've done everything at Tryst from spend several hours there playing board games or reading, taking a date on a Friday night, and working from home on a busy weekday. The only downsides are: - Can be very tough to find a seat sometimes, especially on weekends. That's doubly true for groups larger than 2-3 people - WiFi is turned off on weekends (not an issue for me but is for some) - Take-home coffee selection is pretty weak, usually with 1-2 CC offerings and one of their own - Pretty loud at times Despite those, Tryst more than hits the mark when it comes to a coffeeshop and is worth many visits. read more

Best coffee shop in DC hands down. I would give it a 5 except the service is horrible. But the atmosphere, food, coffee, location, and quality of the back bar make it worth going. You just have to know how to handle going in there. The biggest problem I face here is getting my check and getting out of there without being stranded with an empty cup for an unnecessary 30 minutes. To counteract the slack service I always pay when I order. Ex. "I'l have a latte and the waffles, here is my card i'll just pay now". If your lucky you get your bill sometime while finishing your meal/ coffee/ cocktail. But the quality is top notch and espresso drinks can not be beat. read more

I've been to Tryst many times now and each time I like it more. Good drinks, food, and atmosphere. And the staff are great and fun. I've spent hours on one of the couches studying for a final (with my laptop, taking advantage of the free wifi) and my waitress was taking care of me the whole time. It's a great place to sit down and read as well as have a conversation. They usually have good music playing and have live jazz on certain days. I've had a great sandwiches and wraps there, but one of my favorites is the nachos locos. I can't really comment on the coffee, but the frozen drinks (especially the frozen mocha!!) and chai are great. They also have a nice selection of beers and other alcoholic drinks... I had one of the best tequila sunrises here lol. My only warnings would be that it can get crowded (especially on weekends). But I would definitely encourage you to check it out. I'm a fan. Oh, and I would also recommend the Yared (especially if you are feeling sick). It's steamed OJ with lemons, limes and honey. read more

I enjoyed the food and coffee options here! The frittata was very good and huge. I also appreciated the politeness of our server whose name I can't remember. I only had two issues with this spot: 1) a lady next to us had her little dog at the table with her. He was not a service dog. I personally don't think animals should be allowed in restaurants because you never know if someone is allergic and/or if there's going to be fur floating around people's food. 2) the seating is first come first served, so it was slightly awkward stalking a table that we had to share with others. People LOVE Tryst. I used to live in Mount Pleasant and that was always an option, but honestly, I would always try to find somewhere else. The reason? Not sure. Perhaps I wanted to be different, but I think it has more to do with my like for smaller coffee shops. Tryst is big and packed with people all the time. The coffee is okay as is the food and pastries. There is no wifi on weekends and if you sit down yourself, it takes the wait staff a very long time to notice you and take your order. I personally would go to Compass Coffee in Shaw before heading over to Tryst. read more

What do you get when you mix peanut butter and a chocolate shake? A Washington Carver! It was a creamy "meal in a glass" and cost almost $5. It also came with a twist as our server was allergic to peanuts... so his tattooed colleague sashayed over with it. Tryst is, well, more like a "public cuddle" so if you want to watch young and old, hip hats, cool laptops, lounge lizards etc., then this is a good place to go. They have lots of vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, ovo-lactovarian... food. Staff is friendly. But, seriously, isn't there a code regulation about more than one toilet per 100 people? read more

So I've lived in DC for 19 days, and everyone that I meet has told me "Go to Tryst. It will feel like Boston." You see, Boston (well, Cambridge in particular) is a place where people take their laptops to cafes and sit there all day drinking one (maybe two) mugs of roobios tea. The cafe walls are undoubtedly painted some wacky colors (light blue? paisley printed wallpaper?) and something like Alexi Murdoch, Damien Rice, or Elliott Smith is playing. Bonus points for tattooed and/or pierced cafe staff. You get the picture. I walk into Tryst yesterday and, I kid you not, Damien Rice is playing -- I instantly feel at home. Truth be told, I've never been to a cafe that has waiter service, but I thought it was a charming idea, even if it is a little clumsy (our waiter was adorable and nice, but seemed to have a hard time figuring out who wanted to linger over tea and who wanted to get the check and head out). The pastries were good - not amazing enough that I would head to Tryst just to eat them - but really nice, especially when paired with one of their teas (points for a good tea selection). I really, really, really enjoy Tryst. Whenever I'm on the walk there I'm smiling. However, the issue is when I get there and have to find a spot! Tryst is always packed and you can hear the multitudes of great conversations happening. I go here to study or simply grab a cappucino. There aren't that many outlets so it's not the greatest place if your laptop can't hold a charge. The place is full of laid-back-ness. You have couches and tables that could have come out of your college apartment, creating a comfortable atmosphere. The service is polite and friendly, and the coffee, tea, and sandwiches are all delicious. Some nights they even have live jazz here which is worth it alone just to go for. This is the kind of place I'd bring DC visitors to for an afternoon coffee break on a nice weekend. When the weather's good, they open up the whole front of the store so you get a really enjoyable breeze that rolls through. Love it! read more

What is not to love about Tryst? (Well....they don't have wifi on the weekends). But apart from that one detractor, it's an amazing coffee shop-bar-restaurant-jazz club. Also, they had a Movember party last year -- the entire concept of Movember is almost nonexistent in this buttoned-up town, so the fact that they held a party makes them awesome in my opinion. Apart from all that, they make a solid cappucino and provide great people watching. Where else can you be hit on before 9pm by someone completely sober, which ends in an invitation to Sunday service? Seriously. Tryst provides a huge space with a variety of gorgeous couches from the 70s and large tables so you can spread out all your work and properly prepare for your interview, write your book, or analyze that data. Or just people watch. Free wifi and good music during weekdays, and live music some nights. read more

I love this place! I could stay here all day, literally. Breakfast, lunch, teatime/coffee, happy hour, dinner, live music, and then a nightcap are all covered under one lovely roof at Tryst! I highly recommend any of the cheese sandwiches + tomato soup. Though it's considered a cafe and has wifi, i wouldn't suggest trying to work here after 5pm because it gets quite loud (patrons + live music) and can be too dark for reading. Plus, since the tables are waited on, you'll probably feel guilty hogging tablespace for several hours if you're only gonna be sipping on a coffee. I came here with a friend a few nights ago, probably around 7:30pm. It was fairly crowded, but we didn't have any trouble finding a table. I got the masala chai tea and the three-mushroom quiche. The tea came in a small teapot that gave me three mugs' worth, so it was definitely a good value. Next time, I definitely want to try the lavender hot chocolate. The quiche was delicious, though I wish the slice had been a bit bigger. The salad that came with it was also quite good - a real salad, not just some greens thrown on the plate to fill it out. My friend got a cappuccino and the Liam sandwich (roasted pork, black ham, white cheddar) - he didn't love the sandwich. I tried one of his homemade chips, which I thought could use some more salt. Our waitress was friendly, but when it was time for the check service got pretty slow. All told, I'd definitely recommend this place. They have a wide variety of drinks and dishes to choose from, and much of what we tried was enjoyable. read more

I liked Tryst quite a lot, but there were a few things I'd change. It is a bit weird to me that they offer table service -I'd rather prices were slightly lower and I could pick up my coffee/ sandwich at the counter. My server was friendly, but I just wanted to be left to my reading/own devices like I am in every other coffee shop I've ever been to. I kind of had the feeling I was being chaperoned by my server the whole time! My sandwich was lovely (I had the Linda, which was superb, though I wish the multi-grain bread was of better quality -thicker, crustier, etc) and the house made chips were a nice touch. I ordered a Cuban coffee and a coffee. The Cuban coffee was sweet without being cloying, and I have no complaints regarding the coffee (though my server didn't ask me if I wanted cream or bring me any). I do not like the animal cracker garnish that all espresso drinks come with. The cardboard taste of generic animal crackers really takes away from the flavor of the espresso. I'd rather have no garnish, or maybe a house made animal cracker instead! Now for the positives! The menu has so many scrumptious offerings that it was quite difficult to decide on my lunch (I always take this as a good sign!). Everyone around me seemed happy with what they had ordered. The music was at the perfect level, I didn't feel rushed, and there were outlets along the back wall to charge laptops/phones. The bathrooms were clean, and the place was well lit. My server was attentive and professional (though I still maintain that Tryst shouldn't have table service... maybe have everyone start a tab at the counter and pay when they leave?). Lots of my friends say that Tryst is their favorite study haunt. If I move to D.C. I think I'll explore other options where I feel more anonymous, but Tryst is a good one too! read more

I came here to study and get away from my urban suburbia. It is located in the Adams Morgan area. I was a bit skeptical at first, because Adams Morgan is a party area. I got there, and the place was packed! Clearly this was a neighborhood favorite. Once again I was skeptical of how much work I will actually get done in such a loud place. When I looked around, everyone else was at least attempting to study so I took a stab at it. I was surprisingly productive, and we lucked out on seating at a corner booth, so I was next to a lamp and an outlet (perfect for charging my laptop!) I had their mocha and honey cinnamon scone. It was delish. I will go back to try more on their menu, they have quite an extensive menu. read more

Super bummed my first visit to Tryst did not go well at all. Normally I head to The Diner next door for my Sunday breakfast fix but sadly it was going under renovations. So my boyfriend and I took a chance on Tryst. It was busy, but there wasn't a wait to seat us. I understand that the kitchen was slammed due to the influx of new diners. But this wasn't revealed to us until a half hour had passed after we ordered our food (which we ordered within 5 minutes of being seated--and we only ordered three things). The atmosphere is cute. There are free newspapers to read, so thankfully that coffee shop aspect passed the time. But after an hour of waiting and still no food--my boyfriend and I left. At that point it was getting insulting to be told every 10 minutes that our food would be right out. Service could have made a huge difference here. I had been wanting to come here for awhile, but everytime I peeked in, the place was jam packed...even at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, it was so full that I had to squeeze in on a couch by the fireplace with a guy browsing the real estate market on WiFi and drinking a triple capuccino. Who are these people, and don't they have jobs? I don't get it...Everyone's a writer, judging by the ubiquitous laptops---but how do they write with all that music and inane chatter around them? "...And then I was so stoned that the pipe was stuck up my nose!" I overheard a middle-aged poet say. (I know she was a poet because I also heard her say that she is "tired of writing for my mother"). Yes, I too am a writer, and was trying to pen a blog entry, but I just couldn't concentrate. "What do you expect?" the poetess was saying, "Jewish people drink from such an early age!" But really this would be a great place for a date, for a rendevous with an intellectual, or just a pit stop for spiked cider on your walk home from work. This is a "full service" coffee shop, which means you have to tip a waiter for your tea or coffee...I'm no slouch, so I ended up paying a whopping 3.50 for my green tea (it is 2.50 before tip). Oh tryst, I wanted to love you so badly. Your coffee shop atmosphere and friendly couches were so appealing. But after ordering two lattes and a breakfast sandwich to go, I waited for over half an hour for the food and my lattes went cold before I could bring them to their final destination. The worst part was that even though I asked multiple employees about the food, no one gave me a definitive answer to where to food was until one very helpful man went behind the counter and revealed the sandwich had been made for quite some time now. He then bagged it and handed it over. By the time I got to the car the sandwich was now soggy (despite being on a sturdy ciabatta bread bun) and my lattes were cold. I think the food and drinks would have been great if they were able to be consumed in a timely manner. read more

Continuing the DC coffeehouse review circuit, I went to Tryst last night for perhaps the 100th time. Back in law school, I ambled up to Tryst on nearly a daily basis to do "work" during the day, typically reading a few obligatory pages of homework before my coffee and food arrived, at which time hours of internet surfing, crowd watching, and occasional conversation ensued. I distinctly remember my first visit to Tryst - I was enamored and could not believe that such a hip, and yet relaxing place existed in the heart of the Adams Morgan wasteland. I remain impressed today. To begin, Tryst's coffee is top-notch. And I really enjoy Tryst's way of presenting its rich, dark coffee in a giant mug, accompanied by a tiny pitcher of cream, even if the service itself can often be slow. Tryst's espresso drinks are above average in taste - the espresso always seems a bit burned, but this one negative is overcome by the always-impressive coffee art and glass mug service. The food at Tryst is very good -- perhaps almost too good to truly call this establishment a coffeehouse. I've tried most of the options on the breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu, and I have to say I have never been disappointed. Tryst's atmosphere can be a little annoying at times, with the loud music and constant difficulty in finding a seat, but all in all this is a fun place to hang out, work, or even go on a date. And if you somehow find yourself stuck in the desert of Adams Morgan at night, check out this little oasis for some coffee drinks or a good beer. My one complaint: the internet, once reliably consistent and fast, has become a complete waste. It's basically inoperable these days. Not sure what happened, but I'm not going back until I hear that that's been resolved. read more

I've come here to work three times purely because of the open wall on nice days.. And the food/coffee is alright. But what doesn't drive me to come more often is the super rude wait staff. Each time I've gone, I've felt unworthy being there. The first 2 waiters hardly gave me the time of day, more involved in playing catch-up with friends than attending customers. The third lady was so rude, she wouldn't let me see the wifi code for more than 10 seconds, then tsking when I asked if I could hold the code while I copy it down. She was probably the first waitress that I've ever given a 10% tip. Maybe it's because it's slightly hipster? Or maybe because I'm not a regular? Either way, it gets points for the atmosphere and veggie-friendly food, but not much else. If another one of these open wall cafes popped up in the area, I wouldn't shed a tear about leaving Tryst as just a memory. read more

Came across this place while wandering Adams Morgan around 11pm on a Friday night! Drinks...Remember Rosemary Green Tea. Refreshing blend of rosemary and green loose leaf tea. Soo into the distinct rosemary flavor and scent! Best part is the animal cracker cookies that come with the tea! Absolute adorable and really gave the presentation the most unique, and satisfying twist! Munchies...Pumpkin & Pecan Pie. Have the best of both worlds! I see white peoples, black peoples, asians, hispanics, native americans, indians, wow you name it!
