I drove across the city to get coffee here, my formerly favorite coffee shop, to be told that they won't let me purchase a cup of coffee to go because it was 2:55p and the shop closes at 3p. I called in advance, just 30 min earlier, and was told they close at 3p. No steps were made to accommodate my request that they make a cup of coffee even though many people were seated outside eating so I know that the coffee machines weren't shut down. I won't be back. To be clear, the place does not close at 3p if they don't want to serve you, it closes at 2:5?. And calling ahead won't help. read more

I've been to Tryst several times over the past year and it has been a good experience each time. It's a charming, mix/match coffee shop restaurant where you seat yourself, and there are lots of interesting and cozy places to post up with a latte or cup of tea if you're working. Because you seat yourself, I wouldn't suggest trying to come here with more than 2-3 people because it can be a toss up as to whether there will be any tables that can fit a larger group, and folks tend to hang out for multiple hours at a time. They always serve their coffee with a side of 2 animal crackers, which I think is a really neat shtick. Their sandwiches have ways been filling, fresh, and cover a good range of ingredients from different cultural cuisines. I recently got the Liam, which is a well-executed approximation of a Cubano. It was hearty and deliciously gooey with a crisp baguette and a nice crunch from the pickles. If I wanted to take someone from out of town for a casual brunch, I would definitely make this my first choice. read more

Came here one night for a drink or two. I love the concept of a cozy, casual coffee shop turned bar at night. It's cool because there are people there for both. It was a pretty busy night and I sat at the bar. It took a while to be acknowledged and served, which was the only downfall. Drinks were strong, but delicious. Drink menu seemed to be heavy whiskey-based cocktails. There are candlelit tables and couches contributing to the dim, romantic vibe. Chaippuccino and Nachos... need I say more? Do not mistake the chaippuccino for a cappuccino... there is a big difference here. The Chaippuccino is basically a chai latte with a shot of espresso. It's DIVINE! I tried to have Starbucks replicate it one day (when Tryst was not accessible), and they completely flunked. Only Tryst can make this drink amazing and sweet and cinnomonny... and so on. Nachos there are also amazing and should be tried. There are two types: Nachos Locos and Nachos. Both are excellent... although, I find I like the regular nachos better because I can make the perfect bite, every time. Whereas the Nachos Locos has all the toppings all over the place. And getting a perfect bite with cheese, guac, sour cream and salsa perfectly balanced is difficult. But, if you have a partner to enjoy them with, I definitely recommend the Nachos Locos, as it's huge and cannot be consumed by one (unless you're appetite is huge too). The only downside to Tryst is finding a table and no internet on weekends. I usually overlook this, as the experience of being there out-weighs this. read more

I stopped by Tryst tyesterday to get a break and relax, To my surprise, they had new menus! Maybe I didn't notice it before, but it seemed like they had a broader selection as well? In any case, I ordered a Kaflom sandwich (lox, wasabi cream cheese, cucumber, watercress) and it was amazing! I woke up thinking about it all day today. Then, I had the Chaucer's cup (apple cider with spices), with which I was equally pleased. In the back of the menu, they have some suggestions for lounging around all day/evening, which is nice because I tend to eat all sorts of random things that don't go together nicely in my stomach. I really appreciate the variety that Tryst offers and to top it all off, I found out that there is jazz on Monday nights! it made everything for me that much better! They also serve their hot drinks with animal crackers The crackers make the drinks so much more fun to drink. :) My only tiny gripe is that their service tends to be REALLY slow, but it's really not that big of a deal since I'm just there to relax (the lighting tends to be really dim, but manageable) anyway. I felt like I was in college again. If you like to hear low murmurs of speech while you read or work, you'll love Tryst. The coffee is good - on a warm day, I'd highly recommend their iced mocha. At night, it's a good place to relax and listen to live music - they usually have a jazz trio/quartet in the back, which pairs nicely with their moderate wine selection. Not a great place to actually get a meal. I came here for brunch on a Sunday. They don't take names down, so it's a complete free-for-all when is comes to snagging a table. People lurk around trying to see who is close to finishing their meals so they can pounce. I don't like having to fight for a spot. There are also very few tables ... mostly couches. The watermelon was sweet and the feta was crumbled perfection, the balsamic dressing was gently splashed and added very nice finish to the salad. Given the context, the experience was meh, OK. Yes, they had chairs and tables, the lighting was pretty good and I found a place to plug in my computer. But, if you are looking for a "lounge" or "cafe", I wouldn't necessarily consider this place. I work my business online during nights so I figured I'd go for a bit before they close at midnight. The late hours and an advertisement for live music/jazz are initially what attracted me. I arrived at 10, only to realize that the musician had already finished. There was a variety of music being played on speakers but much of it is the kind you would find at a drinking/bar kind of place. I was happy I brought my headphones. I ordered a Chai latte' and while it was extremely rich, foamy and frothy, it was served warm; not hot. Furthermore, I would've hoped for a bit more of a personal touch, like some fresh cinnamon dusted on the top or an option to have coconut milk substituted for the heavy cream. But I digress. These kinds of things I now only associate with exotic cafes you find in Chiang Mai, Thailand or remote villages in Peru. I've never been to a place like Tryst. It maintains a cool coffeeshop vibe even if you want to sit in and enjoy a great meal or even grab a refreshing brew. I came by with a buddy for some coffee. I thought the chai latte was amazing. Hell, even yakked about it there and was met with some instant Yik Yak approval. With such a great scene, we ended up staying for afternoon beers and some good 'ol people watching. We had a table but I could see people really feeling some type of way on those couches. Maybe next time.. If you want a quieter coffee shop, this is not the place for you as it attracts its fair share of foot traffic. We actually waited ~5 minutes to find open seats. I went on a Saturday for a late brunch and it was pretty crowded, we had to try hard to scope out some seating. Their coffee is great and served in giant mugs. I appreciated the diversity in their menu and enjoyed a blueberry muffin as a sort of brunch appetizer (desperate times, hungry people). I got a piece of chorizo quiche with fruit on the side and the quiche was delicious my only complaint was that it seemed awfully small! Could have just been a fluke thing, I saw some other people with more normal sized pieces. Tryst is a coffee shop with a few big tables (perfect for spreading study materials out), patio seating, and a bar. Some staff members are more allergy conscious than others. The ones who are sure make it feel like home (or the ideal place for 3 bloody mary's at 5pm) In terms of non-alcoholic drinks, I am very impressed with their chai tea drink options; one option is a powder and another is a masala tea. I have been a regular at both Tryst and The Diner. I have noticed some changes in the food preparation since COVID, like the quiche is not as lovely and fluffy, but the service is always terrific. I'm glad that I moved here in part because of Tryst. I'll be honest, the food has been hit or miss at times. With that being said, I'm willing to forgive it for the ambience and variety of experience this place can offer. Catching up with a friend over a glass of wine or tea, getting a Sunday mid day lunch, working quietly on a laptop, or even a first date - it seems this place can handle all of that. Just okay. It's a decent size coffee shop where you can seat yourself but it gets packed fast and outlets are hard to come by. Wifi is awfully slow as well. The food and drinks are decent but nothing spectacular. I had a golden milk which was $5 (a tad overpriced) and it was served lukewarm, next time order extra hot but flavor was good. I always get the spinach quiche with salad and a crossaint and for the price it's filling and pretty tasty. Overall not a bad place to stop by if your in the area for some coffee/pastries and conversation. If you're looking for a study environment this is not ideal. read more
