I think I'm still drooling from our lunch here today. Every single thing I tried was sooooo good. I loved the pork ribs (so tender and had some great spices rubbed on it) and the marbley brisket - wowww! Not usually a fan of collard greens but those were also pretty good. I liked their twist on the coleslaw because it was creamy and had some kick to it but my favorite side was by far the mac and cheese with corkscrew noodles, cheese and bacon on top. I wish I had room for more of the sides but I guess I'll have to come back for those and a potato. We were convinced to try the lemon pound cake and it was so lemony and the frosting was just right. Everyone was so nice - even the dude back in the smoker house. We were excited to try out a new place at first. Then we were disappointed. The sausage was so salty. The price was a little high compared to other places. We're from Houston. We tried Killen's BBQ (The best BBQ in Texas, second best in the US.) I can say that Truth was not even close. Around that area, Nathans atleast is roomier and feels more like a restaurant. Went to the OG in Brenham today. Got there at 11:15 and waited for about 40 min. This is one the TX BBQ restaurants where it's cool to make people wait and run out of food everyday. I get it. No star deduction for that. They have beer and water while you wait so that's cool. Turkey was very good. Lean Brisket was very good. A little fatty for lean but very solid brisket. Sausage was good. Potato salad was good but nothing special. Same for Mac & Cheese. Corn pudding thing was awesome. Beans just ok. Overall I wouldn't go there just to get Q for myself or two of us. I would absolutely pick up a big batch if I were having a party and it seemed like that's what most people were doing. Pretty cool outdoor eating area and clean bathrooms. Excellent bbq, great service and easy access right off Highway 290. Brisket is lean, tender and full of flavor. Chicken is moist and smoked to perfection. The array is sauces are flavorful and robust and the pickled onions, peppers and pickles are a nice add. The desserts looked beautiful but we unfortunately didn't have any. Been twice in the past several months; both times were excellent! No matter what time you get there, you probably will have to wait in line but it's worth it. Both times I was there, I had about a 30 to 35 minute wait. There is complementary Lone Star Beer available for the wait (and the meal). Everything on the menu is delicious, and the prices are pretty decent. Brisket and ribs are as flavorful as they come. I tried the garlic sausage and jalapeño and cheese sausage. I was standing in line yesterday (9/3/17) waiting for the doors to open at 11 a.m. and met a fellow brisket snob like myself. He knew what he was talking about, it was apparent from the beginning of our 1/2 hour of conversaton. During our conversation I asked him where's the best brisket he's had and he said hands down it was Franklin's in Austin, TX. As we're a person or two from the counter, the owner puts a few pieces of cubed brisket on some butcher's paper for us to sample. I was very curious as to how the gentleman I met would critique it as given the cube I had just tasted I couldn't imagine it being better. He paused for a bit, took a second bite as he needed to verify what he was tasting and said it was right there with Franklins, exactly even in his mind...at the top of the chart. Frankly, if he had said anything less, I likely wouldn't have believed him. The people there are fantastic, the sides are great, having a big cooler of water or Lone Star beer for people while they wait in line is very Texas of them...it's such a great place for bbq. 5 out of 5 stars is a slam dunk....but if the option was 100 stars I'd have to give them 98; very close to perfect but not quite. This is a preference but I prefer places that have self-serve with pickles, onions, jalepenos, etc. I understand why some don't, a lot of waste/cost. And I also prefer raw white onion with brisket versus pickled red onion. But that said their home made waffle cut pickles and pickled red onions are very good. And one last "complaint"...they're not open enough!; just Fri, Sat, Sun. And they can't open a second location, to be on Washington Ave in Houston, soon enough! read more

My kids went to Truth for lunch on Saturday but were too late to get more than a sample. We made sure we arrived earlier on Sunday and boy was it worth the trip! Great turkey, brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. The pinto beans were extra yummy and the corn pudding was fantastic. The cake slices are huge and delicious. All great quality but not cheap. Plates may have been better than by the pound for our group and I will say the sandwiches looked wonderful. They offer something for everyone. Their nice pavilion was pretty full so we took our food a short drive over to the Fireman's park which was perfect for my grandchildren. Hard work looks like it's paying off for these guys. It's like this: Being a New Yorker, I never had a reference point for what quality barbecue really was. I had the great privilege to visit Houston on business, and I decided that I was going to hit this place first on my barbecue crawl. After a week of intense training, I began my relaxing trip to Lockhart by stopping here on my way. Glad I did. Very unassuming joint on the outskirt's of Brenham. I got out of the car and the smell of the smokehouse was heavenly. I knew I was in for a treat here. Got to the building, and there was a bit of a line, but not nearly what I expected. It was 11:30ish, and there was 5 or 6 people ahead of me. I was able to get food, and get a seat in the VERY small dining area. I really didn't want to eat outside as it was stupidly hot and humid, so this was a bonus. I ordered a three meat plate with coleslaw and pinto beans. added some pickled onions for good measure. Settle at the corner table and set about to eating this gorgeous selection. Fatty brisket, ribs and cheddar jalapeño sausage. Just the smell and the appearance of this tray of food was enough to make me drool. The smoke ring on the brisket and the ribs, The coarse cut of the cole slaw, the cheese oozing out of the sausage ring. It was art to say the least. The brisket - Moist and tender with a nice complement of partially rendered fat. Cooked perfectly, and the peppery rub put just the right amount of heat underneath the big bold taste of smokey beef. The ribs - Again, cooked perfectly. Beautiful deep smoke ring. Bark like no other. Again, the rub was peppery and bold, but not so bold to overpower the pork flavor. Perfectly balanced flavors, fall off the bone goodness. The sausage - Beautiful texture. Nice snap. Nice smokey flavor. The combination of the melted cheddar and the jalapeño was absolute perfection. This I would definitely go back for over and over. Overall? This place is worth you time and effort to go and try. I doubt you will be disappointed. read more

I happen to stumble onto Truth BBQ while I was browsing through Instagram. I instantly had to come onto Yelp to see what people where saying about the barbecue. After reading some of the reviews, I already set my expectations of the place pretty high. I then looked them up on Facebook and had posted a question about about their schedule. I decided to head up there on a Sunday. Arrived about 10 minutes before they opened their doors. We were the 2nd person in line. Nice cozy spot with about 3 tables inside and tables outside. While I was in line, I hear Pit Master Leonard say "Mr. Gee"? I'm already impressed. I wanted to try as much as I could so I ordered the 3 meat plate consisting of marbled brisket, jalapeno sausage and pork rib. Also included in this $14.95 plate (I know, right? What a bargain!) are your choice of two sides. I decided on the corn casserole and mac&cheese with bacon bits. Make sure you also get their pickled onions and cucumbers which they pickle in-house. I've tried just about every top Texas BBQ restaurant in the great state of Texas (Franklin's, La Barbecue, John Meuller, Snows, Killens, etc.) and Truth can definitely be mentioned in the same breath as those aforementioned. I think what impressed me most about the plate I ordered was the pork rib. IMO, there are very few places that can pull off smoking ribs. The Truth nailed it. And the corn casserole was to die for. I probably shouldn't have finished it all because I damn near fell asleep on the way back home because I was so stuffed. Apparently, Truth has only been open for about 6 months. When word gets out about this place, I expect there will be long lines like the other greats. I will definitely be making another trek out there soon. Pork ribs are the best I've had in years. If I walk into another BBQ restaurant that "Kansas Citys" a plate of good ribs, I swear I'll shove that little bone down their throat. I have been all over Texas. Small towns and big cities and taste all kinds of BBQ and lemme tell you, this is the best BBQ of all. I got me a moist brisket plate. The sides were coleslaw, colored greens, and some pickled onions. The brisket was uhhh-mazing. I just pour the BBQ sauce on it and BAM, the most delicious BBQ in town. Wow. This is what real Texas BBQ tastes like. I've rarely had BBQ this good. I would even rank it ahead of some of the more well known Texas establishments such as Franklin's in Austin (which I think is somewhat overrated). The fatty brisket melts in your mouth and requires zero sauce to be delicious. The other meats we tried were great too but lets be honest, brisket is the true measure of Texas BBQ. The spice rub they use is packed with flavor but not too salty. If you do want to put a little sauce on your meat, theirs is a tasty mixture of vinegar, sweet, and hot. Even some of the great BBQ spots have sides that seem like an after thought. Not Truth! Their sides are equally delicious. We tried the mac n cheese, the beans, and the corn souffle. They were all top notch but the corn souffle was our favorite. Most the seating is outside but there are also a few tables inside if you can snag one. It's probably just as hot inside though so if you can't stand a little heat, might want to hold off until the fall. My wife and I brought our 2 kids (8 and 11) and none of us seemed to mind too much. They don't sell beer but they do have a cooler stocked with free beer for patrons. A nice touch as every Texan knows that nothing goes better with BBQ than an ice cold one. We live almost over an hour away in Cypress but we are totally willing to drive that far for BBQ this good.Considering there is any number of BBQ places within a mile from our house I think that should demonstrate how good this place is. read more
