Truly Pizza is indeed a good artisanal pizza, but with so much competition, it was hard to delineate if it was truly one of the top ten pizzas in the nation as it has been rated. With that kind of standard, the expectations were very high, and the differentiation was hard to determine. There are so many pizza places now using sourdough crusts and making their own unique style that it has now become not so unique. I didn't see much differentiation between a very good pizza place and this place. I guess everyone has their standards, but when a place gets rated one of the top four or ten in the nation, it has to be head and shoulders above another very good artisanal pizza joint in the city or the state. I don't think it met that expectation. Period. If you bring the best comparable pizzas in LA, Orange County, or other places, this is not head and shoulders above them. You won't be disappointed by the pizza at all, but if you're expecting something head and shoulders above what you have had at other places that are also very good, then I'm not sure it's going to meet your expectations.Also, full disclosure: I only had takeout, so I did not do the dine-in experience, which I heard is very nice and elegant. If it is about having an overall experience, I am sure it will be great, but I just did not have that experience. I went straight for the pizza only, judging it based on the pizza inside of a box, versus getting swept up by the overall ambiance and other things. We weren't able to land reservations, so we joined the waitlist around 4 on a Saturday and were seated in around 20 minutes. It was pretty quick. However, they only seat walk ins at the counter, which feels like the windiest part in all of Dana Point. I'm not joking when I say our pizza almost flew off the tray. My husband's pizza came out first and he had almost finished it by the time mine made it out. We waited over an hour for my pizza for some reason, even though we obviously both ordered at the same time. The pizzas were good - nice, crispy crust, from both the round and square pizzas. I really enjoyed the combination of flavors of the Smoky Vodka pizza. The garlic bread to start was okay. It wasn't as garlicky as one would like. The service in general is incredibly slow. Once your server is gone, they're gone. Even after all that waiting we did for my pizza to come out, the server still took forever to bring us the check and collect the credit card. I was so happy to make it back to Truly after my first visit back in December! This time there was six of us and it was the perfect excuse to order a lot of food We got the garlic bread and harissa wings to start. The garlic bread was very garlicky and I loved how there were real chunks of garlic in it. The wings were super crispy and the perfect amount of spice. For the pizzas, we got three round and three square to share. Round: champion cheese, dante, skinny margherita. Square: pepperoni, spinach and artichoke, mamma mia. I honestly have zero notes for any of the pizzas. The dough for both was just as good as I remembered, they really are the stars of the show. If I had to pick my favorites of the night, it would be the champion cheese and skinny margarita. Though they are so simple, Truly makes them so well. I also got their house made yuzu lemonade to start and it was super refreshing. The yuzu really shines and it's a great option for a non alcoholic drink. Must try: Sweet & Spicy! Why: Honestly, all their pizzas (round and square) were delish! My fav was Sweet & Spicy! It had red sauce, mozzarella, hot soppressata, stracciatella, Mike's hot honey, and fresh basil. Crust was crispy, fluffy, and slightly salty and I loved it. Flavors and textures blended so well in each bite. My family has been raving about this place for a while so I'm glad I was finally able to try with them. We ordered appetizers (garlic knots, salad, and wings) with 4 pizzas. It was filling for 5 people so well had leftovers that we enjoyed later, and it was still delish after a few minutes in a toaster oven! Notes: Love the renovated area, Dana Lantern. They also gave us plates, ranch, and utensils after asking for those. The restaurant was super beautiful though and I would def wanna come back sometime. Not sure why they didn't let us order any square pizzas to go but that was kinda unfortunate bc I really wanted to try the smoky vodka Note for takeout: they asked for my phone number so I assumed they were gonna text me when the food was ready. Since they told us it would be a roughly 45 min wait, we left to walk around and came back around that time. Came here on a walk in on a Friday night. Told me it would be 2 hours so we walked over to the bar across the street and waited for our table. Turned to be only an hour. Sat us at the bar tops by the kitchen which was cool to watch the pizzas being made. UBER good pizzas here. Mushroom pizza had a mushroom filling on each slice and I added prosciutto. For the past few years, I'd been hearing about Truly Pizza in Dana Point, so we finally made the trip even without reservations. As a group of five, we were told the wait would be about an hour and a half and that we'd be seated at the outdoor stools since there weren't any tables available. Totally fine with us, considering it's nearly impossible to score a reservation, but not ideal as we had a five-year-old who we had to make sure didn't fall off. Ha! First impressions? This place is gorgeous. It's a beautiful two-story, open-air restaurant and easily the most aesthetically pleasing pizza spot I've ever visited. I had to do a double take to make sure the lemon trees weren't real. The front of the menu reads, "Truly Pizza: A Love Story," and I remember thinking, "I'm about to fall in love." But I didn't. That's not to say the pizza wasn't excellent, because it was. We started with the Garlic Pull Apart Bread and the Seasonal Burrata, and both were fantastic. For our pizzas, we ordered the Champion Tomato & Cheese (round), the Smoky Vodka (square), and the Suprema (square). The Champion came with six slices, while the other two came with eight. It was more than enough food for our group, and we still had leftovers to take home. Everything we tried was delicious. The dough on the Champion Tomato & Cheese was outstanding. The pistachio lemon pesto on the Smoky Vodka added an awesome twist, and if you're someone who loves a loaded pizza, the Suprema delivers exactly what you'd expect in all the right ways - it's a classic. My only hesitation is that my expectations were almost impossibly high. When a place requires reservations a month in advance and is ranked the #4 pizza restaurant in the U.S. by 50 Top Pizza, I expected to have one of those "I'll never stop thinking about this meal" experiences. Instead, I had a really, really good pizza dinner. And I've had plenty of those. That said, I'd absolutely recommend Truly Pizza. It's a unique experience that stands apart from your neighborhood pizzeria, and you can tell the team genuinely cares about both the quality of the food and the overall dining experience. The staff checked on us throughout the meal, and the attention to detail was noticeable. To be fair, we also missed out on two pizzas I really wanted to try. The Viola was sold out by the time we ordered (not sure how that happens as our server said they haven't had it for weeks), and the Umami Mushroom, the restaurant's Pizza of the Year winner, is already at the top of my list for next time. Got to try Truly Pizza on July 4 and parking was so hard to find. It is all street parking, after circling around for 30 minutes, we saw a gas station nearby that had parking for $35... ouch It was a short 5 min walk to the restaurant. The ambiance here was very nice and aesthetically pleasing. Our server was friendly and had great recommendations. We got the garlic bread and suprema pizza and olive oil sea salt ice cream to share. The garlic bread was just ok, we did order a side of marinara sauce which helped. But, the bread was on the harder side & flavor was lacking. The pizza was delicious! TRULY a great experience. From entering into the ambiance and feeling transported to Italy. All the way through leaving on a full stomach after an unexpected traditional dessert I was always pleasantly surprised. We went straight into the pizza and skipped all the fluff. There are THREE different crusts with my favorites being between the SQUARE CRUST option with SESAME BUTTER added on or the most flavorful and unexpected which was the thin crust. I don't even like tomatoe sauce but that was delicious and really enhanced the flavors of the toppings with such a thin vessel (which is hard to admit as a bread lover). My advice is order anything and everything that sounds good but at least one pizza from each section. The staff was accommodating with most adjustments for dietary preferences and very kind in helping us stack our obscene amount of leftovers in to go boxes as we continued to order more food to try new items because we all know I won't be able to get another reservation again. For me a must try is the OLIVE OIL SOFT SERVE which paired flavors I have never experienced so well for a creamy sweat and salty finish. Tips: Bring a JACKET it gets windy close to the beach. Make a RESERVATION and arrive early to find parking. Ask for the specials in case you get lucky with a pizza. Order a HOT TEA to help digestion and keep you cozy. read more

This place was decent. I think my expectations were a little higher because of all the good reviews people have told me. I thought that the square pizza crust was good, but too filling to enjoy it well. The la foresta was good too, I think I preferred the thinner crust. Soft serve was delicious, the salt on top was too salty though I think it would be better if it was spread out more than just the top part. The reason for the 4 stars is mostly because of the bathrooms, there was pee everywhere and toilet paper all over the ground. I don't think that the workers checked there frequently enough because in the 2 hours we were there no one had cleaned it. Other than that, the views were nice and the service was good. The pizzas are good! Our party tried three of them and were very pleased. Were they worthy of the top ten in the USA? I'd say no, but everyone has their own favorites (right now for me nothing can beat Quarter Sheets or Apollonia). Hands down the most unique and flavorful was the Umami--a lovely blend of mushrooms, garlic/onion sauce and Bonita flakes, plus the sesame crust tasted like a good crisp cracker. The Smoky Vodka was thick and delicious, with a nice clumps of mozza. I liked the thin Crispy Pepperoni but was hoping for a bit more gooey cheese flavor. The Burrata with artichokes was a winner and definitely worth a try. We also had a great Wedge salad. The service was wonderful and we were treated like royalty. Eating at the restaurant is outside but very well designed and out of the Sun . It has a great vibe and good for a date or a large party, just make sure you have reservation or open to bar seating. The food is mostly Italian cuisine, such and pizza and sandwiches. They do a really good job with the food and definitely would recommend their cuisines. Before we were seated, I overheard a woman telling the host she had driven more than an hour because someone over the phone said there was a chance they could fit her in. Instead, she found herself waiting on the cancellation list, hoping someone wouldn't show up. I remember thinking, "That's a long drive for pizza." Two hours later, walking back to the car completely stuffed, I understood. We had reservations for six, booked a few weeks in advance, and it all made sense by the end of the meal. Creamy ricotta and pepperoncinis don't seem like obvious partners, but the tang from the peppers kept the richness in check and made each bite better than the last. It carried the toppings effortlessly while still being flavorful enough to enjoy on its own. This is comfort food maximized. The Dana Point Wedge was outstanding and easily worth sharing. Before long, we were dipping pizza into it too. I don't usually mention ranch in a review, but this one deserves it. It's comfortably in my top three I've ever had. Don't skip dessert. We ordered both soft serve flavors available that day, Olive Oil and Cherry. They couldn't have been more different, yet both were exceptional. The Olive Oil was silky, subtle, and unexpectedly elegant, while the Cherry was bright, refreshing, and the perfect finish after such a rich meal. The Ace Pear Cider was crisp, refreshing, and paired beautifully with everything we ordered. The service was warm, attentive, and genuine without ever feeling rehearsed. The patio was comfortable without sitting in direct sunlight, and even the restroom was clean. There was a line for that too, which honestly made me laugh because it felt just as hard to get into as the restaurant itself. Parking is limited, but we found street parking about a block away. **July 2026: Wednesday Late Morning** My friend and I checked out Truly Pizza in Dana Point on Wednesday morning around 11 a.m., and it was already buzzing! Though we did not have a reservation we were still able to get a seat in the bar area, which made for a nice, easygoing start to the meal. The outdoor dining area is really beautiful, with high ceilings, plants, and such a upscale relaxing atmosphere. It felt like the kind of place where you want to sit back and actually enjoy the experience. We shared the Spagnola Salad ($20), and even though this is definitely a pizza spot, that salad was seriously great. The arugula, radicchio, Marcona almonds, and prosciutto all came together really well. I know it sounds simple, but it was one of the highlights for me. We also tried two pies: the Umami Mushroom ($24), which was good and clearly had a lot of thought behind it, and the Classic Pepperoni ($23), which was awesome. The pepperoni pizza was especially memorable because it was light, spongy, and almost flatbread-like in the best way. Overall, this is definitely a more elevated pizza experience, but in a good way. Every pizza we tried was excellent, but what really stood out was the dough - it had an incredible crisp on the outside with just the right amount of chew on the inside. We ordered the La Foresta, Our Cheese, and Sweet & Spicy. While all three were delicious, the La Foresta was the favorite. The combination of roasted mushrooms, sausage, herb ricotta, rosemary, and thyme on a creamy garlic sauce made for such a flavorful and satisfying white pizza. Honestly, I'd love to see a pasta version of this dish on the menu! The Sweet & Spicy was another standout, with the hot soppressata and Mike's Hot Honey creating the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. And sometimes a simple cheese pizza is the best test of a pizzeria - the Our Cheese delivered with quality ingredients you can taste. Next time, dessert is a must. Highly reccomend the thin crust pizzas as they are possibly the best ones on the menu. That said the crust on the round pizzas as blistered perfectly and the thick crust squares always are super crunchy and yet collapse like air. Can't go wrong with getting a massive spread. Don't sleep on the ranch and Calabrian chili sauce. Also both salads are always a must for the sides. After months of trying to score a reservation - finally got one for lunch. First impression what a cute pizzeria - loved the lemon vines vibe (faux and real lemons) - reminded me of Capri. My only complaint - I wish there was more. - seasonal burrata - I love burrata, but unfortunately this dish missed the mark for me. First few bites I wasn't sure what to think, but after this pizza grew on me. Saw the hype online, so this place has been on my list for a while. All in all, it lived up to the expectations. Took my girlfriend here for her birthday and made a reservation in advance on open table, which I'd recommend. The ambiance was cozy and felt open. We came at 4pm for dinner on a Saturday and for a party of 2 the wait ended up only being about 20 minutes. The parking lot behind the restaurant was still half empty and there was some street parking available. The service was a little slow, but the restaurant was busy so it was understandable. The major issue was that our two pizzas came out almost 20 minutes apart, the first pizza was already completely cold by the time they brought out the pizza my wife ordered. It wasn't until about 10 minutes after the first pizza came out that we saw our waitress and she informed us that the kitchen had to remake my wifes pizza. It took another 10 minutes from then for the pizza to actually come out. The pizzas were good, but I think a little over hyped. I enjoyed the crust on both the round and square pizza, but the ratio of crust to toppings on the square pizza was a little off. I think if it had more sauce and cheese I would have enjoyed it more. The prices are also pretty high, which for the location is justifiable and not significantly higher than other higher end pizzas. Not my favorite pizza in Orange county, but I'd consider trying it again to see if I have a more enjoyable experience since their crust is unique and different than most other restaurants. read more

Our friends from TX came to town, so it was the perfect place to take them for lunch and finally check this place out! We came as soon as they opened, sans reservation, but the ladies at the front were so welcoming and accomodated our party of 5. Order up: - Classic Chicken Wings (got their Harissa Honey, great meat:bone ratio, tad heavier on the sauce than I'd like, flavor was more tangy than spicy but delicious and savory nonetheless, topped w/ blue cheese crumbles and ranch on the side) - Umami Mushroom (12" round, great touch with the bonito flakes on top, sesame crust was airy and crispy as mentioned, great for dipping in ranch) - Original Cheese (12" square, not to be confused with Detroit style or deep dish, theirs reminded me of soft foccacia with a light crispy crust) - Sweet & Spicy (12" square, which was a win for me, especially with the Mike's Hot Honey drizzle on top...yum!) I washed it down with a refreshing Ace Pear Cider. All in all, it was a decent meal with great friends, who enjoyed it wholeheartedly. Happy to find out you can order takeout. There is a separate takeout door on the right side of the building. Ordering was easy but it did take over an hour to be ready. I didn't mind the wait, it was actually just enough time to go to Dana Point Harbor and walk around. Tried the La Foresta and it was not only pretty, it was delicious! Must try if you like mushrooms. Can't go wrong with the classic square pepperoni. So good even the next day! read more

First time here and was compelled to try it, based on all the hype. I drove over an hour for take out and it wasn't worth my effort. I ordered two pizzas: the Smokey Vodka and the Cheese Pizza. Both of the pizzas were good, but, just kinda mid. While the crust is good, it should never be larger than the pie itself. These are pricey pizzas and I shouldn't have the true main ingredient be the crust. Dana Point is beautiful and their restaurant is a very nice vibe. Does this place meet the hype? Mostly, yes. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation well in advance, like, three or four weeks ahead. Really. This is not a pizza joint. This is a casual restaurant from all appearances that happens to specialize in pizza. The ingredients used for the pizzas, drinks, appetizers, etc. are excellent. Our service was top notch. Kids are ok, and dogs are ok; in fact, the crazy old lady near us held her dog on her lap and allowed it to drink the water directly out of her water glass. I love dogs and all other animals but this was a bit too much. Additionally, many parents allowed their kids to roam freely around the restaurant. This is never a good idea. The place itself is attractive. The lower level is open air, as is the upper level. There is a big fake lemon tree in the middle of everything that spreads its big fake branches with its big fake lemons everywhere over the diners and it is delightful. For an appetizer, we went with the ricotta. You get an ample scoop of fresh ricotta with balsamic, olive oil, and chili flakes, and four pieces of beautifully grilled garlic bread. This delicious dish is a home run. The pull-apart garlic bread appetizer looked amazing, too, but our bellies are only so big. We're obviously trying to make our bellies bigger. They really push the thin crust and extra thin, crackery crust pizzas here. We tried the "famous" one, the "Champion" (because it beat all other pizzas in the known universe in some contest, apparently) and it was fine. There is a hint of tomato sauce on it, maybe a sprinkling of cheese, and some nice salt. That's it. So THIS is the pizza that aliens from other planets visit Earth to try? I don't think so. The crust was raised and salty and good but otherwise, I found this pizza to be quite boring. The square pan Suprema, with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, and peppers, and cheese (what a concept--cheese!) was much more my style. The ingredients really shined here. This one was delicious. For dessert, we tried the soft swirl ice cream and it was delicious. Vanilla was the only flavor of the day and the ice cream tasted homemade. You get one topping and we added crumbled Oreos which was a good choice. The drink game here is strong. They have a few cocktails, a few mocktails or non alcoholic selections, and very strong and interesting beer and wine options. I never get spritzers but I got a spritzer here and it was terrific and far boozier than I expected (and I am not complaining). Would I come back? You bet. The Champion was a huge miss for me but the cooking here is top notch and the ingredients used are very fresh. This is a professional outfit that is putting out a quality product. And if you bring your dog, have enough thought and courtesy to bring a small water bowl from home for your lovely thirsty hairy companion. read more

I'm usually let down by overpraised restaurants, so when I kept hearing about this place, I honestly didn't go in with high expectations. Well, I was wrong. It completely lived up to it. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a really great atmosphere. The service was also very good from start to finish. The pizzas were flavorful and amazing. I also loved the ricotta cheese appetizer. The butter lettuce salad was good too, although I think it could have used a little less dressing. Still, really enjoyable overall. I wanted to try their signature ice cream dessert, but I was so full by that point that I couldn't do it. I also appreciate that they're dog friendly, which is always a plus for me. Obviously this place requires reservations well in advance, and after going, I completely understand why. I'd definitely go back. read more

Had a beautiful Saturday in Dana Point hanging out with my sis! We saw Truly Pizza on IG and decided to take a trip to enjoy the experience. The location was easy to find, street parking and a small parking lot are available. The two story building structure and indoor ambiance took us to an Italian garden experience! There were plenty of cute lime trees and privacy tress around the building. Just beautiful!!! The wait was long @ 2hrs (we didn't have a reservation) so we took a beautiful trolly ride around the area for about 40 minutes came back and a table opened for us. Our waitress was Kind, Attentive, Beautiful personality, and she gave us a great description for the most popular pizzas. We just had to order two pies (champion and pepperoni) and both are authentically DELICIOUS!!!! Later we ordered a soft serve vanilla ice cream with pistachios and honey!!!. so many people had recommended truly pizza to me, but this place is so hard to get a reservation for, so i was super excited when my bf was able to secure one a month in advance!! i think the wait was definitely worth it bc i had never had such crispy and yummy pizzas before that made me want to keep eating despite being so stuffed. i do recommend getting at least one round and one square pizza to try the different crusts! - sweet & spicy: 5/5 - i LOVED this pizza! our waitress shared that this is the most ordered pizza, and i could see why! the hot honey added the perfect sweetness to the pizza, and i loved the freshness of the mozzarella that made the pizza so cheesy and creamy. also, the crust is amazingly crispy and light! - the ladou: 4/5 - i usually don't order barbecue chicken pizza, but my bf loves the CPK one and wanted to try this out too. our waitress shared that this version is actually a mimic of the CPK one with a truly pizza twist, so that was a nice fun fact! i liked the flavors of this one a lot and thought the barbecue flavor wasn't too sweet. my bf said that he still prefers the CPK one tho. - champion tomato & pizza: 3.5/5 - claimed as their award winning pizza, it was a very simple marinara pizza that was pretty yummy but a little too plain for me since i like my toppings. very yummy tho, and i can see why they won! - garlic pull apart bread: the bread was really soft and i loved the cheese on top! i kinda wish there was more cheese tho LOL but still pretty good - house yuzu lemonade: this had a nice tartness that helped cut the richness of the pizzas! overall, i "truly" had a great dinner here! we were seated outside, so it can get a bit cold from the weather, but the heaters were nice in keeping us toasty. our waitress was also so efficient and kind in explaining all the questions we had. i'd definitely come back again if i could secure another reservation hahaha read more

Came with a friend on a Friday night (also on Memorial Day weekend) and the wait was a little over an hour. Not the worst for a trendy restaurant but definitely would make a reservation if I came back. The setting is super cute - string lights, lemon trees, a lively patio. Took a while for us to order but we eventually got the Dante pizza, spagnola salad and a glass of white wine. The pour was smaller than other places but it's also not the most expensive wine. We did ask for the pizza and salad to come out together but they didn't. We were told the salads are made faster so it'll probably come out first but that was why I wanted to specifically request for everything to come out together.
