We went to True Flavor Diner when they opened yesterday, Friday and it was already doing a brisk business; glad we didn't wait! Nice clean place; menu about the same as online. Good that we looked first as there are so many good choices. I Loved my delicious, huge plate of oversized biscuit gravy choice of meat (I chose duck!) , veggies and two eggs. They gave us each a small complimentary. biscuit with a nice preserve while our order was being filled. I loved my food. I felt the amount of food and good service justified the price. My husband was less pleased because he said his food was too salty. Our friend ordered pancakes- which were so large they nearly hung over her plate. She didn't eat much of her huge sausage patty but said she hadn't specified what type of meat she wanted. They did put the powdered sugar on the side as she requested and she was happy that the syrup was nice and wam. Staff were friendly and helpful. Did enjoy this casual traditional breakfast spot. It was full when we showed up at noon on a Saturday, but only had to wait about 5 minutes for a table. I had the pancakes and she had the chicken and waffles. The pancakes were light and fluffy and I picked bacon as my side item that was included. She had the chicken and waffles and the presentation was this stacked tower of mini waffles with the fried chicken on the side. It looked great, but you had to knock over the tower to eat it and that caused a powdered sugar dust cloud that ended up on her shirt! To conclude our girls weekend... we stopped at this little gem. I fell in love with the grits. I ordered a side to go for good measure. It's quite possibly a very off day. Things happens. I get it. But I'm leaving now and the service left a lot to be desired. A lot. The server was abrupt and dismissive so it set the tone for the experience, or lack thereof. Asking "You good?" while walking by in lieu of a standard question like "May I get you anything else?" is something I'm not accustomed to while dining. Additionally, my order was a little off. I ordered the Crispy Catfish Benedict sans bacon, with the eggs scrambled soft instead of poached and grits instead of potatoes. The eggs were scrambled hard, in their defense a lot of restaurants overcook an "easy" order. The grits, while loaded with butter, per the menu, also had sugar in them which I dislike. This place has been on my list to try for a while and while the food looked good, I'm extremely disappointed. In positive news, my brunch companion enjoyed the incredibly large pancakes. This was my date weekend with my fiancé and our first time here and we enjoyed our Brunch. I am definitely going to be coming back as much as I can being they are open Thursday through Sunday. However the service was great and my waiter knew the menu and provided his recommendations that were very helpful but delicious. As a brand new customer who has never been here before, I was not greeted by anyone when I walked in the door, so I proceeded to awkwardly stand by an open table. I was then asked by a women who walked from the back, "how can I help you?". I said, "hi we would like to eat here." She responds by saying, "we stop seating at 1:15p our take out orders stopped at *blank* time". As well as finishing by saying, "someone will always be by the door to greet and seat you, starting tomorrow at 7:30a", while pointing towards the door. Beware! Not friendly towards people with visual impairments. The owner of this place is hostile towards individuals with visual Impairments! And she seems to be eternally angry at the customers that patronize them unless they are obviously Black. I've patronized this place for many years, unfortunately my vision has deteriorated over as many years and I cannot use a scanned menu. I asked for a paper menu rather than scan because I always do. No different than any of the multiple times I've done that before at the same place. When I was explaining that I could not read the scan she felt I was rolling my eyes at her, which I was not. My friend took me here on a visit to Durham from Atlanta. Let me first start by saying the Duck Biscuit was OUTTA THIS WORLD! The slow roasted duck with jerk Flavors & bacon was soooo good! My friend also enjoyed the strawberry waffles. This was also my first time trying Gator, still not sure how I felt about it lol but True Flavors definitely puts together a fantastic biscuit. From the tasty coffee creations to the decor to the service - everything was on point. My favorite part of our visit was the food - I've never eaten at a breakfast place with food this good! I first tried True Flavors in 2016 and I'm happy to say that I'm still a fan! They have definitely elevated their menu but remained true to their flavors (hehe, get it?!). We came a bit later on a weekend for brunch and were able to get seated right away. I noticed they change their menu offerings fairly frequently which is another great reason to come back soon. I ordered the chicken and waffles, the lobster eggs benedict and the breakfast tacos. I had my eye on dessert but after this, both my boyfriend and I were super stuffed and we ended up with a leftovers box. The only disappointing part of the meal was the waffles--the waffles were way more dense than I expected them to be and were not as light and fluffy as I hoped. The lobster benedict was delicious and flavorful as was the breakfast tacos. The breakfast tacos was definitely the breakout star dish for us--they were topped with giant handfuls of fries and it was the most delicious combination! There's still so much more on the menu we want to try and definitely will be back soon! read more

Other than the wait, we really didn't have any complaints about this diner! And you really can't even complain about the wait because this place is just that good. The wait was a little longer than we were told and longer than we had anticipated, but once we were seated, the service was very prompt. The decor inside is classic yet modern, and I love that we got to use cute paper straws! Our table ordered the duck hash, lobster salad BLTE, pork chop, and shrimp and grits. I would say that everything was very good except the lobster salad, which was okay. The biscuit appetizers were also so buttery and savory! I wish I could've eaten more, but I was so full. I'm thinking that breakfast on a weekday at True Flavors was a mistake. Not a mistake in a BAD way, just that the two pancakes I had were massive. Like world record sized pancakes. They were excellent (I ate barely half of the two) and the syrup with them really hit the spot. But wow, the carb crash in the late morning. Woo. They would be PERFECT for a Saturday or Sunday brunch though! Eggs were great and the sausage with them was terrific. I'll be back to True Flavors. Aug 2019:Finally visited again after a year and the food is still good. Location of restaurant still allows for it to get crowded and a wait. My friends and I had paid for our food but was chatting over coffee. Then we were asked if we could let our seats go so they can get people seated. That was a drag on the atmosphere since we saw others still sitting before we were seated. Great place for breakfast! So far I've liked everything that I ordered. Next time I will try some of the sandwich options. Customer service here matches the food, both excellent! But beware the weekends can get kinda crowded but don't let that turn you around. My husband and I got there around 10 AM on Saturday and there was a 35 minute wait to be seated. That was no problem because there was a farmers market in the parking lot. We walked around while we waited and the time flew by. When we were seated, our server gave us a little time to decide what drink we wanted. Also, with our meal came complimentary butter biscuits and a peach jam. If you know you are getting something big, you may want to pass on them lol. The food is not worth the amount of disrespect my party was treated with today. We were dining with a small child in a car seat. The car seat was apparently in the way of flow of kitchen traffic, so our waitress kindly came over to ask us to move it. While figuring out where to put the car seat, getting a high chair and getting the baby situated another kitchen staff came barreling out of the kitchen screaming at us to move it now. I have never been spoken to like this in a restaurant before. She was irrationally yelling at us "move it now" and continued to yell from behind the counter afterwards. As a new mother, it is stressful enough to take a child out to eat, but to be spoken to that way when the situation was being rectified is absolutely uncalled for. We were offered no apology for this woman's behavior and were completely embarrassed by the entire restaurant staring at our table. Okay so I wanted to try this place because of a review on TikTok. I went on a Saturday afternoon and it was not crowded. I was by myself so I had to sit at the counter...not made for short people! I didn't wait long to be serviced. I will say my waitress was not that friendly. She was acting impatient and wanted me to hurry up and order. I wanted an egg and cheese only biscuit because I don't eat meat and she told me I couldn't have that. I was confused because I could clearly see them cooking the food to order so what would the harm be in just putting some egg and cheese on a biscuit. I was also told I couldn't just have a plain ole biscuit which was also weird. This place is not for someone who doesn't eat meat in my opinion. She did offer me a complimentary mini biscuit while I waited and it was okay not really warm so I didn't enjoy that. It's a cute place and seems pretty popular but it just wasn't for me.
