As much as I like D the manager this place is not worth your time or money. 1.) Inconsistent hours or doors locked during the day. Randomly closed even as they have reduced when they are open. 2.) Do not give your prior notice of price increases for cost of membership. 3.) Lightbulb quality has gone down hill. Was super close and convenient to where I live on Capitol Hill but have decided to get a membership at Seattle Sun Tan. As one of the only tanning salons left in Seattle, really sucks how much this place has gone down hill (was never great to begin with). Staff seems like it's always such an inconvenience to check you in or interact with you whatsoever. I came in recently to buy a new membership and the gal told me I had a $300 balance from a long time ago, they said it looks like the card I had on file didn't go through for 3 months. I explained I had spoken to the lady there and I cancelled it, not my fault she didn't cancel correctly and they kept trying to charge me? Instead of allowing me to tan and maybe work it out on my way out, she made me sit in the lobby for 20 minutes waiting for a text back from her manager, so extremely unprofessional. Ended up saying I could pay half the owed balance ($150) and then they'd let me tan again. I said hard pass, the balance shouldn't even have been there and I never used the service during any of those "attempted" charged months. Tatianna really shouldn't work in a customer facing job, not a people person. Don't tan here. read more

I love the staff here and the owner cares deeply for her employees and is delightful each time she's working. However when it comes to quality, the beds are old. The bulbs haven't been changed in ages. I barely get and maintain color with regular sessions. And when it comes reliability, either I have terrible timing or there are consistent issues. 1) with minimal employees there have been many times the door is locked during business hours for 30+ minutes. 2) Beds are regularly offline. It's not an easy trek and with minimal parking there have been several times I've arrived to be told. "Whelp. System is down". 3) Bed bulbs need replacement. 4) I've gone twice now and had a bed turn off mid session. Get dressed. Try again. Shuts off after a few minutes. 5) no scheduling system. You're rolling the dice in limited bed availability. The staff always tries to problem solve and at some point there's too many problems and after months of not getting what I've paid for, I'm cancelling the membership. If you're looking for sunless suntanning this isn't the reliable quality you're looking for. read more

Pre covid this place was solid, dependable, competent and if you were lucky even pleasant. ... Sadly , it's turned into a dumpster. Almost literally as there are 10+ overflowing dumpsters that greet you in the alley after you park... Never encountered a staff so unfriendly and put upon to see/greet customers. The owner Dan, is a good guy but unfortunately a cabal of incompetence has hijacked his business. Also, I've overheard the staff saying very bigoted things about their trans/non binary customers. This review is specifically for the employee with the blonde hair, whose last day is actually today. At the beginning of the month, I decided to check out Tropical Sun. I hadn't really done any tanning before, and just wanted a basic tan. But somehow, I ended up getting sold on the Ultra Red Light package, which sounded great at the time but kind of defeated the purpose of why I wanted to tan in the first place. The red light package was for 5 sessions costing a little more than $100 after taxes. The basic plan which is the one they should have given me, costed about $40 less than the red light treatment for 5 sessions. For my second session, there was a different employee at the front desk.I asked her if I could just go for the basic session to actually get my tan. She was totally cool with it and set me up with a tanning bed. Off I went. So, today when I walked in, it was the blonde employee at the front desk.I approached her and asked if I could swap one of my red light session for a basic UV bed. She tells me it's not possible and it was not a part of my package and that I'd have to pay for an extra session which was about $18. Honestly, I don't see why it's such a big deal to downgrade one of my sessions for a basic tanning bed. It's a simple request,. But the attitude I got for asking was over the top. I think this seriously needs to reevaluate how they run things. And as for the blonde employee, her customer skills were seriously lacking. She was rude, never said thank you for you're welcome. Just sits there with a straight face chewing her gum, and gives you this look like you're some kind of musisance. How does someone like that end up working the front desk, it's beyond me. read more

My experience tanning here was fairly good (aside from inconsistent hours) and staff were always pleasant. However it's now April 1st and I've reached out 2 times via email since February to figure out how to cancel my membership as I'm now on a medication for my skin and cannot utilize any of their services. Not a single person has gotten back to me and I can't reach anyone at any of the phone numbers because their mailbox is full. I wouldn't recommend getting a membership to anyone honestly. I'm being charged almost $100 for services I haven't even used this year. read more

This place is a SCAM! Highly recommend you stay far away from their monthly subscriptions. After calling and trying to cancel no one would respond to me. They continued to try withdrawing hundreds in funds from my account even though I had told them I wanted to cancel my membership with having no one respond to me. When I finally did get ahold of them they tried telling me that they would withdraw from my account once more and then cancel. I hadn't been to their location in months and had to call my bank and have them block them as a vendor. read more

If you're going to close early...put up a sign that says closed. I went to tan before a last minute trip and the sign on the door said please ring the bell because the door is locked. I rang the bell and waited. I called the number on the sign and guess what? No one answered the ringing phone or door bell. It was only 7:45 and they are open until 9:00. I wouldn't have left a review if this was the first time this happened...this is the third time in a few months. I called another location and they said that Cap Hill should be open. I've been tanning here for about 7 years. I have the unlimited basic tanning package for $34/month. I don't remember them ever changing the bulbs in those beds and now they burning out. I've told the front desk and even sent an email to the company about it but they do nothing and don't even respond. I'm tired of wasting my money and have just cancelled my account. read more

Purchased two week package and told them did not want to activate due to 55 hour work weeks. No problem they said, just come in and tell the person you want to activate your membership. Came in today and was told that I already used it, then I was told that I purchased it through Desert Sun. Wasted my morning arguing with enployee. Complaint filed with Better Business Bureau. Update: Tropical Tan NW gave me a few extra days tanning (which I could not use) and 20$ off tanning lotion. Not worth my time or aggravation, then lied to Better Business Bureau, saying packages expire and are non refundable. Why then would the employee tell me to just come in when I want and tell the person I have a package to activate? Duh. Dishonest business. Will not give this place one more cent. read more

Had a great experience coming here. As a person of color I was worried about tanning for the first time. Natalie helped me out and was very knowledgeable about tanning on all skin types. I went for one session in the ultra bed for 7 minutes and my skin looks great. I plan to continue to tan at this location as a member. read more

Yesterday was my second time going and I was offended by a guy that worked the front counter. The front counter guy asked me for my name and I told him and he right away said " you do not look Mexican " I reply" well what am I suppose to look like ?" Then he laughed it off and said "NO NO take it as a compliment " so because I don't have brown skin I am handsome ? He kept making it into a joke but kept on putting his foot in his mouth. I will never go back and I had spent so much money there in the past. It hurts and shocks me out of all places it was on capital hill. I still have another paid session there . The comments that he made and the laughs between him and his co worker makes me feel uneasy . It's funny... As a kid whenever I thought of people who went to tanning salons and/or especially those who worked at tanning salons (no offense! Please keep reading lol!) I would think of blonde, stuck up, rich girls. I couldn't have been more wrong. I am being 100 when I say that at this Tropical Tan location, as well as many others, I have been welcomed, helped, and most importantly, respected by some of the nicest women (and sometimes men!) I have ever come across. Natalie, the manager at the Cap Hill location was absolutely exceptional in every way. Professional, respectful, caring, funny, and UNDERSTANDING of my *akward* situation (which I won't get into here. Lol) . I moved away from Washington in January and cancelled my membership at that time. I was told I would no longer be charged from that point on. It is now August. Instead of canceling it they put my membership on a "freeze" and continuously charged me a freeze charge every single month since then. I called, left voicemails, emailed with no response. Told someone would get back to me. I finally demanded to have contact info from someone higher up. I was given an email. Days later they responded they would refund TWO MONTHS of all the months I was charged since January. I argued that was not enough. They ignored my request to refund all of the money and refunded two months. And now they STILL DIDNT take my information out of the system and I was just charged AGAIN after all of that. If you don't want your money stolen 8 months after you cancel stay far away from this trash can of an establishment. Negative stars if I could. read more

All of the staff at the Capitol Hill location is great, however Nathan makes the experience exceptional. He always has the biggest smile on his face every time I walk in. He asks how I am, how my day has been, etc and really makes it personal which is really nice to have after a long day of dealing with everyday life. I swear he never has a bad day LOL. He's educated on every product he sells, and is a tanning guru when it comes to explaining the different levels of beds and what they do.
