Good old fashioned subs! Inside bizarre, old school college pennants line the walls and there's a bizarre swing straight out of Weird NJ but those subs! Just the right amount of meat, shredded lettuce and oregano and vinegar. And the best, "Want fries with that?" Not sure why they always ask if you want fries but that's half the fun. This is not subway or blimpie it is a home town sub shop, no frills, no special meal deal supersize or biggie size. If you want a sandwich you get a great one here. The bread is always fresh, the cold cuts are sliced to order (and stacked) you don't have to ask for extra meat you just get it, that's how it's made. I have even gotten a tomato sliced before my eyes for my sandwich (that's right folks it didn't come pre-sliced in a stainless steel pan) my sandwich is tasty and fresh every time. My sis who moved West missed it so much, she begged my parents to bring some when they visited her last yr (in exchange for my In N Out burgers when they return, lol). Not sure if it was the owner, but whoever was there at 9:40 on a Friday morning (mind you, before they've even opened) made the effort to watch me park my car in the EMPTY lot and then walk to the building next door to where his competitor is. We've been living in Clifton for over 18 years, transplants from Long Island. This place could use a facelift, and to be honest, looks a little like a dive. I don't know what made us finally come in, but we are so delighted we did. It seems like we're making up for lost time, ordering sometimes twice a week. First of all, we did the Roast Beef with gravy, and it took all our strength to try something else, that's how much we love it. So, based on other reviews, we went with the #11. Now we order one of each. Totally generous with portions, and everything is freshly made. There's one thing that's slightly under-rated and that's the soda's. The menu isn't particularly inventive - but simple is good. The owner (I presume) asks patrons what they want quickly and with some edge - so it doesn't pay to be soft spoken here. That said - the sandwiches are awesome. The meat is sliced fresh for every sandwich and paper thin. Heaps of meat are piled onto super soft white rolls with cheese with fluffy shredded lettuce, fresh tomatoes, shredded onions and oil and vinegar if you want. Focus focus focus on the cold cuts, which are hand trimmed with a knife before getting to the slicer, the enthusiasm for the application of red wine vinegar and the bread. The bread. It's not the usual hard roll or hero roll so common among North Jerseys deeper seated sub sandwich traditions. The soft, fleshy, almost foamy rolls soak up the vinegar like few else. Best subs in Clifton! I've been going here since i was a kid and it was called Frills. It's consistently good! The bread is amazing and their cold cuts are so fresh and sliced so perfectly. I even love how the lettuce is shredded so thin and perfectly. You honestly will never taste a fresher sub. The Turkey with bacon, lettuce, tomato, and onion and oil and vinegar is my favorite. I also love their roast beef and provolone. My husband also loves the fries with gravy, which have tiny pieces of roast beef on them. Parked in their parking lot with my wife and 84 year old father thinking we'd get a quick lunch. The place looked filthy from the outside so we walked 2 stores up to Henry's and got our food there. On the way back the Troop's owner came out and yelled at me for parking in "his lot". (The No Parking signs list which building #s are ok for parking but if you're not from the area how would you know which stores they applied to?) I apologized and said it was my fault and I'd know better next time. He wasn't satisfied with an apology and threatened to send our license plate #s to the police for ticketing.
