Had to revise my review do to the owner being rude and nasty after accidently sitting down to eat and not knowing he didn't allow it. No signage stating it anywhere. He claims he put it in a bag and thats how I should have known, but most places do this and still allow seating. Will not be going back after this experience. It's been such a long time. I haven't been to Troops in over 20 years. I was an actually a regular at Troops predecessor back in the 70's which was Frills. The name has flipped a few times from Frills to Troops, back to Frills, then back to Troops as the ownership changed over the years. But I am extremely happy to say that the subs are as good as ever. Exactly as I remember them. Generous portions of meat, cheese and fixings on a sub roll with the perfect texture. Soft, but not too soft. Back in the day the rolls came from the Albodanza bakery. I'm not sure if they still do, or, even if Albodanza bakery still exists. The prices are extremely fair. The place itself is a bit of a dive and that is fine by me. The food and the people were both great. The place itself and the overall vibe/environment took away from the experience in my opinion. I have been going to troops subs for as long as I can remember. I grew up on the stuff I remember going and grabbing lunch after getting out of school and even after I graduated I would go time and time again because the sandwiches are always amazing and the portions are always more than enough. The owner Billy is one hell of a personality he always makes conversation with all his customers no matter what he's doing. He is also the main guy who makes your sandwiches. Can you tell him your order once and your sandwich will be ready in a few minutes. All the deli meats are cut perfectly paper thin stacked skyhigh with the right ingredients the perfect amount of condiments I guarantee satisfaction Every time I go to troops subs I always order the same thing because the turkey sandwiches here taste like no other. As a Clifton native who has eaten at Frills growing up, Troops was a blessing for us. I went there today - during the 2nd wave of this pandemic - and all I can say is FILTHY!! I have never seen such a disgusting and filthy deli in my life. This place is absolutely filthy. Pictured below is a photo of the counter where the sandwich I ordered was made on.... completely unacceptable. The bread was taken from that mess of crumpled up paper and stray pieces of meat and then made right on top of it!! I live very near to this place and pretty much grew up in the area....I'm kinda upset that I NEVER stopped in this place sooner. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the subs and sandwiches are delicious. My wife had and ham and Swiss half sandwich with the works. Of course I tried it and I loved it! I had the cheesesteak with gravy and fries onions....oh man. They use REAL delicious juicy steak. Awesome cheesesteak! The fries were fresh golden crispy goodness. I will absolutely be coming here again and trying something different. Only thing is they only accept cash, so make sure you've got some on you before you go there. The owner was really nice too. While BS'ing with a friend via text, I mentioned that I was craving a WaWa sub (obviously a sub I love, absolutely nothing against them). However, my friend promptly made fun of me, noting that it was lunchtime...during the week - in other words, I should go to an "actual" deli. Based on that interaction (aka peer pressure), I opened up Yelp to see which delis were local to work. Troops caught my eye based on the good reviews. As I approached the shop, I was a little weary. It's not much to look at, and I have to admit I can't be certain I would've stopped in without yelp. They have a large OPEN sign, because it's difficult to tell otherwise. I ordered a turkey and american with L, T, and vinegar. Around the same time, approx 5 other ppl walked in and gave their orders (all kinds of crazy concoctions). I honestly didn't know how he'd keep them straight, but he confirmed my order - no onions, no oil - yep. I watched as he sliced ultra thin turkey right on to the bread from the slicer - he had won me over at this point, luckily it got better... The verdict - the sandwich was super affordable ($5), and delicious! The lettuce was also finely shredded, the tomatoes and bread were fresh, and he added the perfect amt of vinegar. I'm both happy and disappointed that I didn't learn about this place sooner. If my job wasn't ending next week I'd be here way too much. But, I still live in the area, so I'll gladly go back. The owner is super sweet, works incredibly hard, and has the best service! If I could live here I would. The food is incredible. Was looking for a sandwich or hero place to try for lunch and couldn't decide between Troops or Henry's deli that is a parking lot away. Decided on Troops and first thought was, "How does this place pass health inspections?" Very dirty. Ordered an Italian with lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar. Bread was soft, a little more oil and vinegar than most places, meats were sliced very thin. A lot of ham that was overpowering and I ended up taking most of the ham off. Service was nothing special. A little history about this location. It was located here years ago by the owners father, then it changed over to Frills for years and now is back under the son's ownership as Troops. That said, the sandwiches are amazingly packed with meat. I order a full one by myself, but for the average person, you're either going to share one or you're going to have a really good take-home! The location even had a bench-swing you sit on and swing away the calories while eating. (OK that doesn't work. Or does it, and I just eat so much I can't swing them off?) Either way it's fun! Barely any meat on the sub. I was still hungry after I ate it. My boyfriend ordered simple cheesefries. They overcooked the fries to a crunchy brown & forgot the cheese. So wasn't a great first impression. Tried this place again today. I went in and had to wait quite some time-which was fine. However, it allowed me to see how unbelievably run down and unsanitary this place was. You couldn't pay me to eat in the place. It looks like it hasn't been cleaned, swept or mopped in 30 years. Further than that, I had a simple ham, salami & provolone sub. The guy took the salami & provolone out of the fridge, pre-sliced and in saran wrap. For a $10 sandwich-all the coldcuts should be freshly cut, it was extremely odd and had me wondering how long ago both items were cut. Not what you expect from a jersey sub house. Above all, the sandwich, quality of meat nor service did not stand out in a positive way against other local Jersey sub houses. I wouldn't even call it medicore. You simply won't find a better "sub" sandwich shop anywhere around. What the place lacks in "decor" it more than makes up for in freshness, variety and value. The bread used for the sandwiches is always fresh, soft and delicious. Try a (#7) turkey and bacon with mayo instead of oil and vinegar or a (#3) capicola, prosciuttini and provolone with the works(lett, tom, onion, oil and vinegar) - along with the "secret" spices they sprinkle on every sandwich. You will get messy and you will use 20 napkins....totally worth it. To drink? Try a fountain made cherry, chocolate or vanilla coke. and don't forget onion rings or french fries - not made fresh, but still some of the best you can get. There aren't many places you can get a kick as lunch for $8 that is this good. You definitely need to give this place a try if you haven't already. read more

My first time here and at first glance it looks like a hole in the wall but a Clifton hidden gem as I found out. Definitely one of the best subs I have had. I ordered the grilled marinated chicken and added cheese to it. The flavor jumps out at you and the bread which is what completes any great sub was fresh toasted and perfect. He was a little heavy on the pepper which is the reason for my 4 rating as opposed to 5. The setting is run down and can appear dirty but these types of places usually have the best food. The guy was super friendly and very good customer service skills which I always appreciate. One other note is that they did not have the popular Chicken Parm sub option on the menu which is one of my personal faves. read more
