Just in case, I will give EVCO the benefit of a review; it's the least I can do for them after they scammed me out of over $2000. The work this contractor was shoddy in every respect, and they don't take any responsibility for their mistakes. The principal made me sign a contract (I'll never fall for this one again) which he is now using to try to insist I pay them the remainder of what I "owe" even though they didn't finish the work and left me with an unusable subfloor that I will now have to tear out at my expense and find someone else to construct again. There are many disreputable, sleazy construction contractors in Austin and also a few good and honest ones. Try and find one of the honest ones. If the person you're hiring is kind of pushy and insistent that you sign a contract with a lot of questionable clauses (must go to arbitration in case of a dispute, etc..) take this as a sign that they have been in many disputes with previous customers and make your exit as quickly as possible. You don't want to be one of those customers; i.e. you don't want to be me: out over $2000 and further away from my goal than I was when I started.

I am blogging my review from my own personal experience for my home & a friend/neighbor's home done by Evco Remodeling. The project-to keep simple was for new countertops, back splash & all new fixtures in our home to prepare it to sell. After calling and personally speaking with the owner, Roger, I felt more than comfortable setting an appointment. He answered almost all of my bazillion & bizarre questions as I was pretty much trying to force a quote over the phone :) The next day the hubby & I met with him and just by him being so accurate with the "pre-quote" over the phone and his professional advice & demeanor my we decided he had more knowledge than the previous contractors we had met. We went forward. Roger went over a simple 2 page contract with us binding us together (which I do NOT agree with the guys comment below WHATSOEVER, I think there should be a contract in place... for your protection and theirs) and then we paid half of our price at the time we signed and was told we would pay the rest on the last day! Work started almost IMMEDIATLY... the men were very nice, dressed appropriately and in hopes to not "offended" anyone reading this I'll keep it simple by saying these were not your usual contractors coming into our home. They were polite, clean, wiped their feet and I could tell they were really going out of their ways to make my family and I feel comfortable while in our space- which most certainly has to be harder said than done! I watched as the work was being done and never questioned if something was right or wrong, never had any worries, issues about them showing up on time, or work not getting finished. The owner would call and ask how things were going and he was also stopping by and doing MUCH supervising! I basically never had any questions on concerns with the work being done. All said and done my home turned out to beautiful... almost to the point my husband and I didn't want to sell anymore!!!! :) It was like a brand new home!! Who would of known what a HUGE difference a little remodeling can do for your house! If it wasn't for our relocation back to Houston I would still be there now. Just keep in mind if you are in the Austin area and need remodeling that Evco treated me AMAZING from start to finish. The work, people & prices were great and completely exceeded our expectations. So, if you, fellow yelper, need a great remodeling company my experience is well worth you giving them a chance! They 100% have my recommendation!

In my initial outreach, I explicitly stated that this was a virtual consultation and outlined the scope in detail. Ryan responded that he could handle the work and was interested. We confirmed logistics multiple times, including the evening before and again the morning of the appointment. My client rearranged her schedule, and I rearranged mine to coordinate a live virtual walkthrough at the property. Ryan did not arrive at the agreed-upon time. After the scheduled time passed, I called -- no answer. I sent a message asking him to confirm arrival -- no response. Two and a half hours later, he sent a message stating he had been "warned to stay away from these types of jobs" and apologized. There was no prior indication of hesitation, concern, or limitation in scope. If he was unwilling or uncomfortable with the nature of the job, that should have been communicated before confirming and causing both myself and my client to restructure our day. Reliability and communication are non-negotiable in client-facing industries. Unfortunately, this experience demonstrated neither. I cannot recommend based on this interaction. ***Update*** *Ryan attempted to dodge accountability by replying on Thumbtack that he was not given a clear scope. They answered the phone and pledged a call back / visit within a couple days. Called me back and came out on time as scheduled. Jason checked it and found the problem pretty quickly. Fixed on the spot with a 5-year warranty. Minimum cost. Great service. A+++ Update 10-14-13..........the skies fell this weekend....12+" of rain in 24 hours my neighborhood. No problems with my roof. Really happy I got it fixed when I did.

And if you're into the professionalism and polish of a big corporation, All-Star Roofing has that too--from the folder-bound quote packet that comes with every estimate and explains everything from the company's background to the week's weather forecast, to the wide selection of products and services and the quality of work. Like every company, there were a few hiccups. They forgot some wire mesh on a small rodent-intrusion repair we did a few months back, and didn't get back out to add it for several weeks. And when we replaced the roof last month, they were a bit late on the first day of work and forgot to alert me. BUT, the thing that makes All Star different from so many other companies is their insistence on apologizing (sincerely), promising to do better, and fixing the problem. Customer service is a serious concern for them. Oh, and did I mention they are a great value? Terry drastically outbid two other companies for the roof replacement last month, and offered a better warranty. We've moved to Dallas, but if they'll make the trip up, we'll definitely be calling Terry about our next roof.

He did it because he genuinely wanted to make sure we had the information we needed to make informed decisions. It really felt like he wanted us to have the best home possible. When we finally bought a place, they were there on day 1. We bought a house built in the 1980s, that needed to be transformed completely. From demo to design to building, they were so communicative and invested in making sure we were going to love our new home. No matter the question or issue, Jim always responded right away. And oftentimes, he would come onsite himself to check things out, fix things, or install things. I have heard horror stories about other GCs, but the Petrickas go above and beyond. Melde Construction company's motto "Love your home. Enjoy the journey" is nothing but a facade…read moreafter the experience our family endured from May 2022 to December 2025. The quaint white building on 6th street, showcasing yearly "Austin Best Builder" signs with owner and employees who wear black tee shirts that say "Humility & Curiosity & Diligence & Confidence" is simply not at all what we experienced. We recently settled a six-figure lawsuit against Melde Construction, (new owner) Bernie Calcote, its former COO Nic Bell, its former Project Manager Jesse Marsh and several subcontractors. Mr. Calcote and Mr. Bell were never deposed under oath after much legal maneuvering and boxes of evidence and hours of witness testimony are not easily accessed publicly. Therefore, we feel an obligation to warn other potential clients about key facts before possibly hiring Melde construction or any of the people involved. Melde: 1) did not keep the project notebook required by the contract that would facilitate us to see invoices for labor & materials 2) used incorrect building materials 3) did not follow architectural plans 4) charged us for work they never ultimately performed 5) made errors that could have caused catastrophic fire and/or carbon monoxide poisoning 6) repeatedly lied by omission about water intrusions in the house while family lived elsewhere If this was simply a situation of a construction project that took too long and went over budget, or if Melde had taken responsibility, we would not be voicing our concerns publicly. Melde blamed the homeowners and refused to be accountable for its actions. Homeowners are still trying to solve Melde's errors, among the most egregious issues: -concealed water damage to original hardwood floors after failing to protect home during at least two storms (fall 2022) -installed incorrect furnace in attic that would have caused fire if activated -charged for an electrical service upgrade that did not occur -installed brick type we did not order, had workman chisel to look weathered instead of ordering weathered brick -placed new HVAC condensers without discussing placement -painted over damage to the ceiling in the garage (garage was not within project scope) -installed doors & handles on the addition that don't match existing doors & handles which are directly adjacent to addition -charged DOUBLE original quote for metal handrails then did not paint with direct to metal acrylic enamel -did not honor warranty for windows, left project with multiple hardware, latches and weather strips missing Before entering into contract with Melde Construction (Bernie Calcote bought business from Leon Melde in July 2016), feel free to contact us for more explanation and details. It was completely rotted out and was a safety hazard. Out of the four contractors I called, Melde was the only one who responded right away. Two of the other companies told me the balcony was beyond the scope of their abilities. As for Melde, I knew they did home renovations, so I wasn't sure if our balcony was a job they'd do. Nick was able to come out within a day or two to give us a quote, and he assured me that they could do high-end renovations, build a dog-house, and everything in between (including the balcony). They were able to start the job the following Monday. They finished on time and under the original estimate. I was very pleased with the work. I'll definitely do business with them again.

After touring my home and discussing the project I had in mind he had a detailed multi-page proposal for me. The first bed I received from a contractor was literally an email that went something like, Kitchen: 15k, Bathroom: 10k, Garage: 15k...Not very assuring. Shawn and his team were assuring from the get go. Communication with everyone on the team from his right-hand man, Oscar, and design wiz, Sara, to the plumber and electrician were streamlined by use of an app called Slack they use. This was so useful when you are working on a mult-month job and always have a ton of little questions or concerns. I could easily just shoot it out into the app and anyone on his team could respond. I loved that. And these guys are top-notch. Oscar did some amazing things in here. When we found an unexpected load-bearing beam, he expertly engineered a huge beam across the near-length of the kitchen that allowed us to fully open up the area...without hiring an engineer (my decision). That thing was solid. Then he took my dated fireplace and lathered it in multiple layers of concrete and mortar to make what is now a piece of modern art. Sara and Shawn both have an eye for design. When I sent a photo of one of my bathrooms to a friend she told me it looked with the W. In a few areas of the house they kind of nudged me to let them have some artistic leave and I am so glad they did. My master bath is now a study in what you should do for any small bathroom space and my laundry room has added about 100+ square feet to the home and functions as a mud room. All of the contractors he works with are exceptional as well. I will always use David O from Make it Drain plumbing and Irvin with Retiz Electric. His team of subcontractors did quality work and were respectful of me and my home. I had lots of people in and out of my house and had full trust in them. Most importantly, Shawn is an excellent communicator. He is always a text or phone call away, and would make time in his busy schedule to drop by the house and meet with me as needed. I have heard horror stories from my friends of contractors who disappear in the middle of a project or fail to respond to requests for updates or questions. I had none of these problems with Shawn. My renovation turned into a much bigger project in terms of the amount of changes that were made, but it never felt hopeless or endless, and the end result made it all worth it.
