I then move on to the quiche with fresh fruit. One of my FAVORITE choices for brunch. The salmon dill & spinach/mushroom are light fluffy with a crust to die for.. My hubby loves the corn beef hash. This is my favorite brunch place in the city. They have good Swedish dinner as well. I have come here several times with a friend or a group. It never disappoints me. So I feel I have to write a review for them. Their Danish is freshly baked every day, flaky and soft. They always have daily specials, like quiches, omelette and eggs Benedict. I tried almost everything on their menu and I am never tired of quiche. Both salmon dill and broccoli cheddar are great. In the summer, you can sit outside in the lovely garden/yard. This is definitely a very cute place to have breakfast though they sell lunch items too. My husband and I have been coming here for over 6 years and we have yet to have a bad meal or a bad experience. Although the weekend mornings get particularly busy and there is a slight wait time, it's never been overly bad and the waitresses are all very friendly and courteous. Usually when a place gets super packed, the service takes a hit but not here. Notably, at 11 am on a beautiful Sunday in chicago's all-too-brief summer, one could walk right in, which should have been a tip off. The oslo omelette at our table was so salty as to be inedible. The Swedish pancakes were utterly tasteless, they appear to have replaced good apple syrup with restaurant supply corn syrup substitute and the special sausage they touted was swimming in grease, and in a word, awful. The poached egg was perfectly done and the potatoes were good. The coffee was better than average for restaurant coffee. All in all, not going back. Kudos to the manager for not charging us for the meal, though we would have been happy to pay. [That means we're not just trying to get a free meal.]. With so many excellent breakfast restaurants in the city, it's time for Tre Kronos either to do a total overhaul, or recognize that it's time has come and gone. read more

This is a must-visit restaurant in Chicago, in my option. The atmosphere is cozy and cute, the service is great, and most importantly importantly the food is delicious. Every time I have come here, no matter how busy it is (and this place can get PACKED on the weekends) I am always met with incredible and friendly service. The food is wonderful - my favorites are their quiche, corn beef hash, and their homemade soups. Amazing Benedict - worth waiting for! Family took me to this cute little Scandinavian place for breakfast as soon as I landed in Chicago, after a very early morning flight and I think it'll be the ritual moving forward. Get off the plane and head straight to Tre Kronor. We got there on a Saturday morning at around 8am and it was already quite busy. My cousins strongly recommended ordering one of their Eggs Benedict dishes, but they weren't ready yet - the hollandaise sauce was still being prepared and would be ready in 20 minutes. It was well worth the wait - get the Eggs Benedict. Specifically, I had the crab and it was the best Eggs Benedict I've ever had. I got 2 large and meaty crab cakes along with the Benedict and the well-worth-the-wait hollandaise. It came with a side of potatoes as well (no bread). It was very filling and because of the eggs, a bit heavy but the crab cakes were such a great compliment - meaty but light and not too dense. To fill the 20-minute wait for the hollandaise sauce, we ordered the pastries like the freshly baked cinnamon roll (thick and dense icing compared to Cinnabon, but holistically not as sweet) and pecan and maple danish. They were served warm and were just perfect. Light, but filling and a couple more and I probably didn't need the Eggs Benedict. They were constantly busy with tables frequently turning over, but the service was still very attentive, warm and friendly. They never left our coffee cups cold or half full. I came here on a Sunday for brunch. There was a wait to be seated (at least for a table for four), but we went to The Sweden Shop directly across the street to kill some time. We sat inside because the maître d' said the bees in the patio area were acting aggressive. I did encounter an aggressive bee on the way out. The patio area looked lovely, though. This is my first time eating Swedish food, and the food was delicious. I ordered the vanilla and orange French toast. Best French toast I ever had! There were no sides included (other than a slice of orange), yet it was quite filling. I also ordered the sausage of the day, which was applewood smoked bacon sausage. Yum, yum, yum! It reminded me a bit of polish sausage. I would've given four stars if the service hadn't been so slow. And points are taken off due to the fact of how tiny the restaurant is. I always enjoy food from my own people! But ... this spot seems to become more inauthentic the more I come here. The decor is of course very much reminiscent of my days in Sweden spent with family, but most of the food doesn't have the same effect. I've had a few things on the menu on several visits here, including a veggie omelet with spinach that was too thick and eggy (not like anything I would get in Sweden), and the pancakes, which are better than most of the food. The potatoes were probably the most disappointing to me, as usually they should be more crisp and not so bland. Most recently I had the Brie and red pepper quiche, which I thought to be the best thing I've had here. Crispy crust, and smooth and delicate filling, and the red peppers gave it a sweetness that I wasn't expecting. Side of fruit was a nice addition! But again, it could've been a little more representative of what Swedes would eat (maybe some lingonberries or better strawberries instead of grapes and kiwi). And now for the bullar - first of all, I think there should be a distinction between the cinnamon and cardamom varieties, which the wait staff don't seem to understand. Also there's lemon icing on them, which is adds a nice tang but also not the most authentic. It's a good cinnamon roll, but it doesn't really remind me of the ones I've had in Sweden. What's more is that when the staff sang happy birthday to someone in the restaurant, they didn't even sing the Swedish version (Ja må han leva), and that made me sad :( so aside from some minor dishes on the menu, I don't feel like I'm eating Swedish food. My husband and I tried this place for the first time last night and we loved it! It was a pretty chill atmosphere. The waitress was very friendly and all smiles as she served us. There was no wait at all and we were seated right away. The time it took the food to come out wasn't as slow for us as other reviewers have mentioned. Perhaps that's because we were one of the few customers there on a damp Friday night. My husband had the pear salad, duck with lingonberry and he had nothing but good things to say! I had the onion soup and the swedish meatballs with pickled cucumber and the berry sauce. It was simple but delicious! To top it all off, my husband had their coffee with burnt custard for the both of us to share. The serving size for the entrees were pretty small for the price, but the taste was worth every penny. Stopped in for brunch this morning. Neither of us knew about their patio. It's a quaint, hidden gem! Lots of trees and the little barn is adorable! Started with coffee (nothing fancy) before moving into the main event. My friend had the french toast. It's his go-to dish here. Along with sides of both bacon and sausage (sausage has some seasoning in it I couldn't pick out, but it was great!). I opted for the omelette of the day...shrimp, havarti dill, and garlic. Yum!!! I got to come here for the first time today and I really enjoyed the outside patio, as well as the iced coffee, and the food. It's on a corner across from North Park University. The actual inside of the restaurant appears to be VERY small, and there seemed like quite a few people who had to wait to sit inside in the AC. But the patio is quite large and offered quite a bit of seating, and much of it was in the shade, which was a relief in the unseasonably hot temperatures. I had to give Kroner two stars because of a horrible experience on Father's Day. Its the second year in a row my dad wanted to go enjoy their cozy patio and Anders Hash and Eggs... the food is amazing! But be prepared to wait a very, very long time. My husband and I arrived at 840 since they do not take reservations, we were sat at 9 when the restaurant opens, ordered in a few minutes and did not get our food for over an hour and ten minutes!!!!! Although we have our usual brunch places, we decided to try a new one on recommendation. However, that place had no AC (!!) and a 45 minute wait (!!!), so we ended up at Tre Kroner. I'm sure glad we did - the waitress was delightful, and the food delicious. Even my cinnamon role was still tasty when I finally got to eat it the next day. TK is definitely worth your time if you're in the area and hungry. The one kvetch I have has to do with my own derrière. Specifically, that it's large, and therefore trying to navigate the restaurant was a challenge, since I didn't want to knock into anyone. If you're less gifted in that department, or if you don't sit in the very back of the restaurant, I imagine you'd be fine. In case it matters to you, there isn't a 430 ILCS 66/65 sign that I could see. Huzzah! read more

This was comfort food that gave us an incredible flashback to our honeymoon in Sweden. We only did breakfast but we want to come back for dinner soon. The coffee was on point and the waitresses were sure to keep our mugs full. As we waiting for the delicious meals to come. I got the corn beef hash with eggs and the swedish bread and I ate the entire plate. The meat was for sure homemade and you could taste it. So amazing. My husband got the Stockholm omelet and that was legitimately the sausage we found in Sweden and they really nailed it. The atmosphere is cozy with super cute trolls on the wall. You see, I married the polar opposite. He loves bland food, I eat raw hot peppers as snacks. He is a Norwegian from East Hampton, NY. I am, well, an Indian from the jungles of Africa, plateaus of India, the Mediterranean, and the Sahara. In order to respect each others differences we go exploring different cuisines each week. Enter Tre Kronor for our weekly installment of "ethnic" dining. Because I couldn't find a Norwegian restaurant, I decided to treat the man to something close to his native cuisine. I knew I will be happy with any place that serves good herring. And the Scandinavians do pickled herring very well. We started off with Sill Tallrik - two different types of herring served with hard boiled egg, mixed greens, and tomato. We also ordered the Gravlax - smoked salmon served with chopped onions, tomatoes, mustard sauce, and toast. Excellent appetizers. The herring was perfectly prepared in two sauces that added a nice zing to the taste. For entrees we got the daily special - crusted trout - and the duck. The trout was served with wilted spinach and potatoes au gratin. My duck came with asparagus and roasted potatoes, served with lingon berry sauce on top of the duck. The entrees were pure delight, he loved his trout and I inhaled my duck. The highlight of the entrees was the potatoes au gratin. It is probably the best I've had in this city. Since we both NEED dessert after every meal, we decided to share the daily special - almond cake. It was served with whipped cream and meringue. I am not a fan of cake unless it is chocolate, but I fought the man for this almond cake. It was most excellent, the meringue added a nice balance to the sweet fluffy cake. Best part: BYOB! The man was happy to connect to his roots, and I got to give my palate a break from spicy food. It was a win-win situation. read more

We walked there for breakfast/brunch one Sunday morning. Even though we arrived about two minutes after they opened, it was already bustling with customers, which is a great sign. I was really looking forward to this Swedish-inspired meal. It started out well with some fabulous coffee. Wait, where were our refills? They were slow in coming. Hmph. I ordered Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon (because I hear they eat a lot of smoked fish in that part of the world); my partner decided on Ander's Hash and Eggs. While waiting for our food, we decided to indulge in a shared cinnamon roll and more coffee, which did arrive finally. The slight glitch with the coffee refills, our server explained, was due to one of their coffee machines being on the fritz. I always appreciate good communication from my server, even if it's a minor disaster like this. No worries, and our faith in her was restored by this news. When my eggs arrived, I couldn't have been more pleased. It's obvious that Tre Kronor uses the very best quality ingredients. The yolks of my eggs were nearly orange, and so delectably unctuous that I could hardly contain myself. Where do they get their eggs? The hollandaise was perfectly made, not broken and slightly lemony. The dill was incredibly fresh! My guy's hash and eggs were generous, hearty and tasty. Overall, we left satisfied, happy and fully caffeinated. I could get used to the way of the Swedes! I went to Tre Kronor tonight with a friend of mine who is Filipino. People never seem to think she is Filipino...they ask her if she is Hawaiian, Eskimo... anything but Filipino. Everyone is wrong...she is Swedish. Tonight I found out she knows too much about Swedish food, she is a member of the Swedish Museum, she knows Swedish songs, she knows Swedish folklore, and she goes to IKEA regularly (including this morning). I am actually part Swedish...but before tonight, my exposure to Swedish things had been limited to Ann Sather's cinnamon rolls and ABBA. And my Filipino friend who is, as newly discovered, oddly Swedish. Tre Kronor is a darling place. It's small and the tables are close together but I didn't feel cramped (but I think the waitresses have to be skinny to work here). Loved the European/Scandinavian decor. The menu is not extensive but it is very, very Swedish...a picky/non-adventurous eater (the type that orders a cheeseburger in a Chinese restaurant) might have a hard time, and there's not much for vegetarians. My pal and I are not picky or vegetarian...one of the many reasons we are friends. She got the seared duck and I got the Swedish meatballs and we agreed to share. We started with crab cakes, which were very good. I had a peach Kristal soda, which I enjoyed. We liked the entrees...she said the meatballs were even better than IKEA's! Good gosh! During our visit, two employees dressed in traditional St. Lucia Day clothes sang a song for her, and explained some St. Lucia Day traditions in Sweden. My friend, of course, knew all about this St. Lucia thing, including the song lyrics (see paragraph 1). I doubt waitresses perform during dinner every night (this ain't Ed Debevic's) but this was a nice accompaniment to a traditional Swedish meal and it felt very Christmas-y. I mentioned to the Filipino-Swede that I have never had Filipino food. Now she is on a mission to take me out for some. Just a charming, cozy, clean and friendly Swedish restaurant across from North Park University. I felt like I was in Sweden. So very special. The food was fabulous, I loved every bite! Started with Danish onion soup, limpa bread. Excellent! Main selection was the Oslo omelette with Norwegian salmon, fresh dill and creme cheese. Dessert was rice pudding with lingonberry compote.
