Stopped in for a late lunch today after watching Diners, Drive-ins, and Dive's Guy Fieri rave about the Swedish meatballs. I was disappointed to learn that Tre Kroner only serves these on the dinner menu. I get not having the entire dinner menu available at lunch, but if the Swedish meatballs are your signature dish, good enough to have been featured on the Food Network, then you should probably have that dish available at lunch too. I'm going to guess that I'm not the only one to feel this way, since we watched a table, leave minutes after being seated, when they too learned they were unable to purchase the dish. I opted for the Norwegian meatball sandwich which was mediocre substitute...not terrible, but it by no means "wowed" me. On the plus side, the Danish onion soup was pretty tasty. We want to give it another try, but Andersonville seems to have quite a few good Scandinavian places that we will try first. read more

Drove 30 minutes out of my way to stop by this restaurant to buy a pastry that I had called to confirm they had. The hours posted online show the restaurant closing at 8pm. I came at 4:30 asking to take a pastry to go and was very smugly told by the woman working the dining room (with diners eating) that the restaurant was closed. Assuming taking a pastry to go would be a simple ask... I tried communicating again why I had stopped in. The woman just kept repeating with a patronizing tone and oversized smile that the restaurant was closed. No actual conversation, just repeating same statement. This was an amazing hole in the wall. The topping on the cake was that we were able to order a dinner appetizer for brunch, baked Brie with apples and honey. We had their Oslo omelette, their smoked salmon and dill cream sauce was amazing. It was not overpowering and was mixed very well with the saltiness of the smoked salmon. We also had their corn beef hash. It had so much flavor and had just the right amount of char and crisp to make you want more after every bite. I have been eye balling this tiny breakfast/brunch place for awhile now. This review has been long overdue too...but this Swedish spot is a highlight of North Park. Walking in, the brunch spot has transferred an apartment into its food sanctuary. It is bigger than you think with more seating in the second floor. They also have a private room for reservations. Our server was kind enough to tell us the history of the room- it used to be a dentist office way back in the day that they transformed. The place offers a great homey ambiance, but for me, there was curiosity because I don't know much about anything Swedish! Now time for food! All the menu's were paper written. The menu was short and sweet- PERFECT FOR ME. Funny enough, I didn't get anything from the menu. I got the daily special- an omelette with ham cut of the bone with fresh onions, tomatoes, avocados, and cheese with roasted red potatoes. MAN that was an amazing omelet. The only problem was just a 1st world problem- it was a pretty small portion compared to other portions at other restaurants. Not a major concern because it was really delicious! My girlfriend got the belgium waffles. A very simple pastry topped with fresh fruit. But there was something special in these waffles... they were so fluffy and soft but it still had a crunch. My girlfriend swears it is one of the best waffles in her young lifetime.. and that means a lot coming from her! The photos of the swedish pancakes was from a previous visit. They are actually big pancakes that are folded on top of each other- similar to crepes! The lingons on it were also fresh.. Avicii would probably approve! Tre Kronor has one of the best brunch games in town. From the lattes to the benedicts, every detail was on point. As other reviewers noted, the kitchen is not super fast, but we never felt forgotten. Hubs ordered the crab cake benedict, and I ordered the smoked salmon benedict. I *never* finish potatoes with my breakfasts, but this time, I did. Those baby reds are fantastic and so simple-- I don't know what they do to them! The benedicts were perfect, the hollandaise was the exact medium-light consistency I like (with the right touch of lemon). We were both so happy and will definitely be back. read more

My 2 stars are strictly about their service or lack of it. I and my children love their food and I'd like them to figure out they would match their service to it because of it. When it gets really crowded, the wait tends to be slow anywhere for sure and this place is not an exception. I totally get it. They expanded the seating but the kitchen can't handle it. So, I thought for rush hours. Today, we placed a pick-up order for lunch (for the first time). We figured it is bette than the brunch hour. The food was ready in a reasonable time. When one of my children went to get it, one of the servers gave a bag so my child came home - missing 3 items. My child called them and whoever picked it up said, "Your food is here." That was the first flag. So, my child went back and was handed a bag. My child had a peek and noticed there was only one item but figured maybe those college student servers are stressed out with hungry customers (as there was one lady asking for the status of her food per my child) so came home. The food was a treat for me as I was in pain but the thought of treating me met with no apologies from the restaurant. We want local and independent restaurants to do well particularly during this pandemic so we didn't ask for a credit back but this experience totally discouraged us from going back to this restaurant. I have waited tables and it is no fun at times but I'd like their servers to remember their wage is still coming from customers. Yes. It may not have the person my child interacted who didn't pack the bag well, but if you are there as a server to interact with customers, you become the face of your workplace. I've been here twice and they screwed up my order both times. Today (Sunday, 6/9), we waited forever for our food and it arrived cold. All seven orders. When we asked about the delay, we were told a large group had ordered just prior to us. I clearly saw that group and they were seated well after we sat down. Food was very greasy and the portions seemed small for the price. The home-made corned beef hash was over spiced with thyme and was an unappealing brown mass. The maple sausage was grease coated. And, again, it was all cold. The staff is friendly enough but not organized. The crowd was heavy but it was Sunday breakfast after all. All in all, it seems like Tre Koner is quite content for this to be a local favorite and that's fine but I probably won't be back. read more

I can't say enough about the service! Our server was very polite and kept checking in to make sure we had everything we needed which is rare now. The pepper quiche was really good, fluffy eggs sitting on crunchy crust. The waffles were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Unfortunately, the horrible service here and extremely long wait time for a simple eggs Benedict when the place is less than half full pretty much overshadows the good food and cute atmosphere for me. The staff is super kind, but they really will just completely forget about you... for like 45 mins... I wish I could say that this is only because of COVID, but I've been here several times pre-pandemic and it's pretty much always been this way, although this last visit was probably the worst it's ever been for me. It's just frustrating when you have to chase the waitstaff for water, to order, to get ketchup, to get your check, to get the check back, etc. I find I just cannot even enjoy the food at that point. Ohmanohmanohmanohman. THIS was well worth the wait. I have been trying to convince someone, anyone, to accompany me to North Park for a looong time so's I could sup at this Scandinavian treasure. I had almost given up the ghost once Guy Fieri brought his wickedness here. He even left a face print of himself on the wall. Yuck. [Point of order: this place is neither a diner nor drive-in nor dive. Guy and his producers need to be fired. Yet another reason why he is the opposite of not-sucking.] With this in mind, I bravely opened the door...to find a quaint, wooden shop with smallish tables, slightly uneven floors, more pictures of Guy on the wall (oops. Those are trolls.), and friendly service. My waiter told me that I could sit down- or upstairs and to make myself at home. Right on. I sat and my waiter asked me what to drink. Ordinarily, I would get orange juice. But, because i felt so European and cool, I ordered some hot tea. Ohh, lookit me. Fancy. I knew that I wanted a cinnamon roll, a danish, something fishy and something dill-y. Luckily for me, I was meeting two very good friends. It's all about divide and conquer at brunchtime. And that's what we did. Between us, we ordered a raspberry danish, apple danish and cinnamon roll. My favorite was the cinnamon roll. Not only was it warm (not scalding hot), topped with creamy frosting and bursting with cinnamon, inside of it were these great berries. Perhaps they were lingonberries? I have no evidence of this. I just like saying, "lingonberries." They were slightly tart and provided a great contrast to the sweet of the cinnamon and frosting. Delicious. Ordinarily, I would have ordered one of these brunch benedicts (smoked salmon eggs benedict? Crab cake eggs benedict? Are you kidding me? Yum!). But, I figured, I could order that during any visit here. I needed to go for the specials. I ordered the (sit down and get ready for this): shrimp, garlic, onion and havarti cheese omelet. Can I get an 'Amen?' Oh mah guhdness. Every bite of this thing sent me into fits of Scandinavian ecstasy. It was so good, I didn't want it to end. Yes, the omelet came with potatoes and toast (with tasty jam) but the savory salty pleasures of fish and cheese...awesome. Simply awesome. Deciding on a special Mother's Day breakfast spot wasn't easy...that is, until I called Tre Kronor and was delighted to hear they accepted reservations. I've seen Kronor on a popular cooking show years ago and had a hunch my mom would love the Swedish specialties.. Reservations were made for 9:30am and arriving at 9am upon opening, there were groups already waiting outside to be seated, not surprising....Even with reservations, we waited and waited and waited. Although it was a gorgeous day, we weren't planning on sitting outside for about an hour. That's how long it took to finally get our table. Not sure having reservations helped, especially after witnessing other groups arriving after us get seated. We asked the front waiter a few times on the wait and he seemed flustered each time. While this left an impression of what to expect inside and possible haphazard service - it was quite the opposite. Flawless. Tables were adorned with pretty pink flowers. Consistent with the pink theme, we were given complimentary pink champagne along with "Queen for the Day" pink stickers which we happily applied to ourselves...yes we were all Queen's for the day, but the real Queen that day was mom...Specials and menu items were thoroughly and thoughtfully described. Although we noticed brunch was offered, there was no mention of and we were fine with the menu's on hand. I was torn between the Stockholm Omelette (Falukorv sausage w/caraway Havarti - YUM), Quiche specials and Crab Cake eggs benny - all sounded mouthwatering. After being told the hollandaise is excellent, my decision was made. Crab cake eggs benny it was. Sis had the Oslo Omelette; smoked salmon, fresh dill and cream cheese. Mom ordered the Swedish pancakes (I knew she would) and 2 eggs plate (comes with potatoes and toast). We weren't ashamed to sample more. Sis shares my obsession for variety. How could we not taste the HOUSE MADE corned beef hash? (Sis is a fan, me not so much). Side of Swedish pancakes (I didn't want to steal Mom's), and another Swedish specialty; Falukorv sausage. Sausage was very good and reminded me of a refined Polish (no disrespect to the Swede's). Hash was finely cut corned beef & potatoes with an overwhelming Sage presence. Oily and salty. Not as enjoyable as we had hoped. Sis felt the salmon in her Oslo was very salty as well, but loved the texture of her omelette. I tasted the salmon and agreed - overly salty. Crab cake was full of fresh crab, topped with the best poached egg's I've tasted in a long time. Hollandaise was light and smooth - delicious. Mom enjoyed her perfectly cooked eggs. We all agreed our potatoes were more undercooked than cooked, and not very memorable. The showstopper? SWEDISH PANCAKES. Everyone's favorite, not to mention the Limpa Toast....if your having toast, this is what you want to get.. Not only was our girl super friendly and attentive, she was upbeat without missing a beat throughout our entire breakfast. Constant refills on coffee, water and check-ins on our food.. Speaking of coffee, the cappuccino's are on the weaker side. Surprisingly, the coffee was much stronger. So good we asked what they use - local supplier; David's blend.. If your craving more Swedish sausage, their main source is Paulina's Meat Market.. Interior is very small & tight - but so very charming. Just as I expected. The second floor has additional seating and reminded me of dining in someone's home...The bathroom with tub certainly added to the charm and homey feel. Parking wasn't bad either. We easily found spots nearby.. While I struggled with the rating due to salt & seasoning and undercooked potatoes - not to mention the strong egg smell on glasses..(yes, sis told the waitress so they would be aware of this and rectify)....Everything else we had was delicious. The experience, memorable. And the service, excellent. Would love to come back and sit outside in the quaint back patio for lunch..Grab a Reader on your way out the door.... I visited Tre Kronor yesterday for brunch. We came in at 12:00pm, was seated at 12:20pm and did not get food served until1:30pm. I waited 1 hour for the cooks at Tre Kronor to make me eggs with salmon. Did they have to catch the salmon first. What the heck? I came here for Easter brunch with husband and son. There was no wait! We ate upstairs and I was pleasantly surprised by the decor. It's so homey and feels like you are at a friends house enjoying a home cooked meal. To eat, I ordered the honey mustard chicken salad on a croissant with a side of potatoes. So delicious! The sandwich tasted awesome but was messy and hard to eat. The potatoes were my favorite! I would get a plate just of those. I also ordered a Swedish cinnamon roll. Yummy! Cute restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating. The menus are handwritten giving you a small bed and breakfast feel. Tre Kronor is located in downtown Chicago in the Sweedish district. I ordered the Canadian bacon benedict. The egg oozed out as I cut into it just as a benedict is supposed to. The english muffin soaked up the egg making it delicious. The bacon was thick and flavorful. The potatoes were undercooked and not that great. The waitress was very friendly and came by frequently. I went for my birthday brunch and the waitress even offered me desert. That was very sweet of her. The food is very good, and the setting is charming, but let me get the lone criticism out of the way first: the service was pleasant and helpful, but very slow. Usually I wouldn't have minded lingering, but that day I had an appointment and felt that 90 minutes for breakfast was too long, especially since I sped things up artificially by asking for the check ahead of time. There was a long gap between taking our beverage orders and returning with the drinks, and then another gap before doubling back to take our food orders. Then we waited about 30-40 minutes for our food. It wasn't catastrophic, but long enough to sharpen my hunger and increase my anxiety about my appointment. And even though I found it aggravating, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt for two reasons. First, I was catching up with two friends who were visiting from out of town, and it's possible that the waitress noticed this and gave us more space on purpose. Second, the outdoor tables more than double their seating capacity, and it's obvious that their diminutive kitchen was built to accommodate the dining room only. So, all that being said, it was a delicious and enjoyable breakfast. We all cooed over the lovely garden seating area--a better option than their sidewalk seating, and in fact more compelling than most outdoor seating areas in the city. The food was great. My main breakfast was the corned-beef hash, but since I also wanted something authentically Swedish, I ordered a side of the falukorv sausage. The waitress described this as a sort of Swedish hot dog, only better, and she was dead right. It is a mild, soft sausage (beef and pork) three times the circumference of a frankfurter, cut into three thick slices and pan fried. SO much better than your average hot dog. The hash and eggs were nearly perfect--not as heavy as most hashes, and tasty but not oversalted. For my toast, I chose the traditional Swedish limpa, a mild rye bread with a hint of anise--unique (and therefore satisfying). We finished our meal with a cinnamon roll; it was good, but I didn't care for the vague citrus undertone or the over-icing. Next time I'd like to try a danish, possibly two different varieties. And maybe the Oslo omelette...and/or the Swedish pancakes. Hmm...yes, I will definitely be back again for breakfast. It's not too far from home and with a menu like this and reasonable prices ($7.50-8.50 for most of the dishes), there's no reason not to come back, even if it's not during the garden-seating months. read more

This is one of my favorite breakfast places in all of Chicago! They consistently deliver wonderful tasting food. Their pancakes and corned beef are my go to dishes and I highly recommend them. Here's why... -It is very very loud during brunch, lunch, and dinner hours. Sometimes difficult to hold normal conversations. That loud. -While the quiche and many other menu items are very nice, they are pricey in my opinion. And the pastries are just not that great at all. -The coffee is quite good, but it's pricey too! I don't want to pay for unlimited refills when all I really want is one cup. -The owner (the guy one) is...less than great. I can't believe I didn't try this place sooner, having passed it a zillion times on Foster. The food and experience were top-notch. The server pleasantly humored my mom as she wavered between dining indoors and outdoors, and then picking specific tables. Outdoors was definitely a good choice, Chicago weather can be so crummy but this was a perfect evening and the patio was nice and shady and surrounded by a lovely garden and fence so we weren't right up on the street. We got two appetizers and a salad for three of us: the brie with honey, nuts, and apples was fantastic. The crab cakes tasted fresh and delicious, and came with a delicious sauce. The beet/walnut salad was great and even those who suffer from Beet Trepidation would (and did!) enjoy. Main courses were also perfect: salmon, pork loin, and my awesome swedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce and a cucumber salad. We followed this up with three desserts, all of which I sampled/scarfed and can recommend: the chocolate mousse, burnt custard, and rice pudding. Through all this our attentive waiter obliged us by checking on us regularly, refilling water, bringing me three different specialty sodas (all were delicious) and taking a group photo for us. Can't recommend this place enough. In a town like Chicago where there are countless great restaurants, this is one of my all-time favorite places. read more

We tried to come on Sunday after church, but they were PACKED! Well, we tried again today and got a seat easily. I ordered the Oslo omelette. BOY, it was delicious. The smoked salmon is paired perfectly with cream cheese and dill! All of the ingredients I like are in the omelette...it tastes just heavily. The only imperfection was that the English muffins were a little overdone, but it wasn't detrimental to the whole dish. The waitress was attentive and continued refilling our coffee throughout our meal. The prices were reasonable. We will be coming back, perhaps for dinner. This might be my favorite restaurant in Chicago. The staff, the hosts, waiters and waitresses are always so friendly and attentive. The excellent service only compliments the delicious food. Everything I've ever ordered here is consistently delicious and well worth the wait on the weekends. I love the vanilla orange French toast, the flaky Danish filled with apples and pecans, the thin Swedish pancakes with lingonberry jelly and the omelettes stuffed with falukorv sausage and dill. With nice weather, the patio significantly extends the seating capacity, and it's a bit easier to get a table in the morning for breakfast or brunch. Also, it's pretty much perfect out there. Sitting inside is also really nice, it's somewhat lively on the first floor, and if you want a more quiet experience, I'd recommend getting a table upstairs. read more

I've been looking forward to trying this place for quite sometime now, and held out hope that it was as awesome as I'd seen on DDD. Thankfully, it did not let me down! I am Swedish so familiar with many traditional offerings, but I was torn between trying theirs or sticking to more American offerings and I went the latter. Hubby ordered a cinnamon roll to start and I'm not a huge sweets for breakfast person, but the bite I had was tasty. The corned beef hash plate I had was homemade and delicious, but could have used more corned beef, so, not sure if I would order that again. His belgian waffle and fruit though were excellent, and I would consider abandoning the aforementioned affinity for savory breakfast food to eat more of that again. All in all it was a great experience and we'll absolutely be back to try the Swedish fare. We found metered street parking easily in front, did not have to wait for a table (brunch on a Saturday), our server was attentive and friendly, and the best part was the final bill. Awesome value. One of my favorite spots to enjoy breakfast. The staff are always friendly. Service is prompt and my coffee mug is never empty. I adore the decor and the upstairs area feels like someone's home. I've tried all the Danish pastries and the cinnamon roll and they are always fresh and delicious. I love the Swedish pancakes and the Belgian waffle.
