Traveler's Rest in Millwood, NY catered an otherwise perfectly executed wedding and reception by offering a entree of sliced filet mignon that turned out  to be two slabs of a cheaper cut of beef. My plate was served with two slabs of unsliced meat, curled at one end, which cut like sirloin or London broil, even with a serrated steak knife. The flavor was nice but I had to cut and cut and cut to get to it. I am horrified and outraged for customers who are being over charged for what was served. No one at our table ate more than a bite or two of their beef, either. The bride and groom wasted their money. We had my daughter's Sweet Sixteen party this past weekend at the Traveler's Rest in Ossining. I want to give a very detailed review because when we were looking into venues, we would have found more information, especially personal experiences very helpful. We had never been to the location for a large event, but knew they had some outdoor space and that was something we were hoping to have as the party was in early fall. From start to finish, Traveler's Rest exceeded all expectations. Nelson, the owner/ manager (it's a family business, new owners post Covid), was a pleasure to work with! There was no heavy sales pitch, but he did a great job of showing us around the different room choices as well as telling us all the options for seating, meal styles, and menu. We found the pricing for all that was included to be extremely reasonable for Westchester county. The overall price included passed hors d'ouvres, main meals, soft drinks, open bar, as well as a signature cocktail (we opted for a kid friendly "mocktail"), and cake (this saved $$$). Nelson was great with communication, always quick to respond to any questions or requests. He also gave us great guidance on things I hadn't even considered. We had about 80 guests in the two upstairs rooms. We did assigned seating for family and adults and open seating (which Nelson suggested) for the kids and teens. It was a fantastic idea and the kids loved it! They could sit at smaller tables, lounge by the fireplace on couches, hang out on the deck, or walk in the beautiful garden. This also allowed for more space on the dance floor in the main room, which was an added bonus. I gave Nelson a rough sketch of where we wanted tables, space for the dj, serving areas, etc... and when we showed up to decorate everything was where it should be, tables were prepped and set, and the rooms looked lovely. He didn't flinch when I asked at the last minute to add another little table by the couches and it appeared in no time. We chose six hors d'ouvres (meatballs, mozzarella sticks, bacon wrapped scallops, tuna tartar, cranberry Brie tarts, and stuffed mushrooms). They were all tasty, sized perfectly, and didn't stop coming! We originally thought we would do a buffet but then saw the 4 page list of various stations! Station one was an outdoor pizza oven with an assortment of pies and toppings. This was a huge hit with the kids. Station 2 was an Italian station with some classic favorites like chicken Parmesan, penne vodka, a vegetarian pasta dish, Caesar salad,... everyone enjoyed this. Station 3 was a Greek station with chicken and pork gyros, falafel, Greek salad, pita bread, and all the fixings. This station was perfect for our Santorini themed party. Station 4 was a carving station with poached salmon, brisket, and NY strip loin (you have an assortment to choose from). The food was great quality, prepared well, delicious, and plentiful. There were so many options that satisfied a variety of diets (for our vegetarians and vegan too). We received so many compliments on the food from our guests. The bartender and all the servers were friendly and hard working. They consistently bussed the tables and had plenty of beverages available for the kids. My daughter created an AI image of her dream cake. We shared it with Nelson, skeptical how it would turn out, and were pleasantly shocked at how beautiful it was when we arrived. We chose white cake, cannoli filling, and buttercream frosting. It was light and delicious. There were so many little extras that made the venue special... the welcome cocktail wall, the electronic welcome sign that they designed to match our theme (from invitation provided), the beautiful lights in the outdoor garden when it got dark... Thanks to Nelson who was there the entire night to make sure everything ran so smoothly and to everyone at Traveler's Rest, my daughter, her friends, and our family will have a special night to remember forever. read more

No one throws an event like Traveler's Rest! The space is beautiful and they know how to use it. The staff at the event were fun, helpful, and courteous. The planning was easy and management helped the entire way through. They were flexible with requests. They have overhead speakers for music, TVs for photos. And by far the food was the best. I had multiple wedding guests text me after the event telling me they never had food as good at a wedding. And they covered multiple types of cuisine and it was all top notch. Traveler's Rest is Best In Class for events and I will always recommend them. read more

We had a celebration tonight for my volunteer ambulance corp. The place is beautiful. The food was very good. The staff was very nice and kept asking if there was anything more they could do for us. Nelson answered any questions I had, immediately,during the process of planning and even accommodated a date change. The room had changing colored lights in the ceiling that added to the festivities. I was at a luncheon there today. The new owners have brightened up the place by painting the dark woodwork white. We were downstairs with the doors open to the lovely garden. However, they don't have enough staff and their cook needs to go to cooking school. There were two waiters handling our 5 tables. One waiter was also the bartender and the other was showing prospective clients around. The pasta dish and salad were good. We waited close to an hour to get the main course. The bearnaise sauce was watery and the potatoes were barely warm. Eventually, dessert, creme caramel came. It was about 1/8" deep and watery. Coffee service was very erratic. The waiters tried their best but it was just too much for two young guys to handle. It will take a lot to get me to back there. We really had high hopes with new owners. What a lovely Thanksgiving dinner this year! The food and staff were superb. Although it was a traditional turkey meal, german favorites stole the show. The place was recently renovated and turned into an event only venue. Attended a function there and the service was horrible, the food cold and overdone and they added an administrative fee that we never paid before. The new owner basically said that if we weren't happy to go elsewhere-and we are. $50/head is outrageous for what we got-one server for over 30 guests, and while a nice person, was completely out of her league. Traveled to this restaurant from upstate New York to meet relatives visiting from out of state. It was a great choice and highly recommend the restaurant. The restaurant is very quaint and welcoming as you enter. The hostess greeted all of us and made us feel st home. We had a group of 10 and were comfortably seated in a downstairs portion of the restaurant. The restaurant offered some great special to choose from. The menus offered a variety of German dishes including sauerbraten. Many in our party had the sauerbraten that was absolutely delicious. The entire dining experience and service was great. DISGUSTING!!!! This place used to be awesome and my family has been going there for 45 years through all ownerships. Never had a problem. Tonight a few weeks after the new owner takes over and the food tonight is inedible. One meal was absolutely raw and filled with fat and grizzle. The other meal was so overcooked it was like shoe leather. The owner would not do anything to make it right. Nelson is the new owner And besides having disgusting food, he is the rudest man I have ever met. Not a very good business man to treat customers with such disrespect. He has to be the rudest man I had ever spoken to. Completely disrespectful. I suggest that if you go here don't expect to get what you used to get with the previous owners. So very sad that in a few short weeks this man could destroy what the previous owners had worked so hard to make it amazing. I truly hope everyone reads thIs. place beautiful outside there's a waterfall nice garden beautiful view from downstairs restaurant with a nice fireplace. The meal was OK nothing to write about I had the Fishermans dinner which was a piece of Fried fillet, small piece of sole Fish that was too well done, Two pieces of shrimp I guess you would say they were stuff but they were just dipped in breadcrumbs and fried scallops where tasty on the inside but why would you Fryscallops? Two small pieces of broccoli they were OK just plain broccoli. The waitress was very pushy kept coming by and telling us we need to place our order for the food it's not her it was her boss. We were waiting for our other guests every 5 to 10 minutes she kept asking please our food order. I asked for a double espresso I got this tiny cup and I couldn't put the Sambuca in and it overflowed. They gave me a larger cup for a double espresso. They should've gave me a large cup with a double espresso in the first place. It was nice that the gentleman scraped the crumbs off the table into something but the last swipe he put it in my lap. read more

Last night I attended my friend's 60th birthday party at Travelers Rest. First let me say that the venue was quite beautiful. It is unfortunate that the beauty of the event space was overshadowed by the rudeness, and unprofessionalism of the owner, as well as some of his staff. We arrived early to decorate for our event. We were spoken to rudely, and yelled at by one of the staff members, for holding an exit door open, for a few minutes, so that we could bring boxes out to our car. The event ended at 12am. At 12:15am, there were 3 ladies who were having a hard time getting an Uber back to their hotel. They tried several times to confirm a driver but were unsuccessful. I asked the owner if he knew of a car service in the area that they could call, He replied coldly, "NO" and about 5 minutes later, he told the ladies that they would have to leave. They explained that they were having a hard time getting a Taxi. His response was "That's NOT my problem" I simply could not believe the lack of empathy and downright rudeness of this human . He was just Nasty! This venue is out in the middle of nowhere, and it was 19 degrees outside. Really? He couldn't give these ladies a few more minutes to get a taxi? What a gentleman? The poor DJ barely had time to load his equipment in his car after the event. It was simply ridiculous. I had my car full of boxes, but thankfully I was able to shift some things around and squeeze all three ladies in my car. I couldn't in good conscience, leave them a dark secluded parking lot, in the freezing cold. The owner of this establishment really needs to take a course on customer service. If you are looking for a beautiful event space with piss poor customer service, Travelers Rest is definitely the place for you. read more

This is our first visit to Travelers Rest. Wished we found this establishment sooner. To me, it was old world charm. The ambiance is warm and welcoming. A rare find is to have the owner visit your table to assure all is acceptable. The prices of the entrees are a bit steep, but I'm guessing it's paired w/ it pretty much being a double portion. Almost everyone in the dining room was packaging up their meals. Great attentive service. We will be back on Prime Rib Night. Thank you Travelers Rest for being a German eatery still going strong! We had a surprise party which started out for 25 and doubled to 50. The party was awesome. The room with fireplace and bar looked out to the decoratively lit garden. We had a buffet of salmon, sauerbraten, penne and chicken francese - everything was delicious. The owners and staff are what made the night special! The owners made sure to work out how to keep the surprise! the wait staff and bartender were personable and very helpful. I really wish I would have looked here prior to booking my party at Travelers Rest with the new owner, Nelson. This place has so much potential - the space is gorgeous and beautifully renovated, and the food at my sister's bridal shower brunch was fantastic. We received so many compliments on the party! There were a few hiccups throughout, all of which I could have overlooked (confirmed a menu and the wrong pasta was served, water glasses on the table weren't filled until nearly the entire party had already gotten food from the buffet and we had to ask for them to be filled, no one was bussing tables so plates were piling up since our guests were enjoying seconds and thirds of the delicious food, the woman behind the coffee bar didn't know how to work the espresso machine until one of our party guests showed her etc.) However, unfortunately, none of the above matters as I have never been treated with so much disrespect as I was yesterday by the owner of Travelers Rest. When we arrived to set up, the room was a bit of a mess (garbage on the floor, dirty tables and tablecloths left from the night before) and we needed some tables set up so that we could decorate and put out our place cards and favors. We asked someone who was setting up the room if the owner, who was our contact for the event, was around. We were hoping to connect on what needed to be done before our guests arrived. When the owner came into the room, before my mom or I could say a single word, and without even saying hello or good morning, he asked 'what's up' and seemed frustrated. My mom proceeded to nicely point out that the floor needed to be swept, there were tables missing that we needed, and a few other housekeeping items that were outstanding. From there, the owner proceeded to say 'we know what we need to do. Me standing here talking to you is preventing us from doing it'. To say he was rude, condescending and disrespectful doesn't begin to capture this interaction. I've thrown a ton of parties all around Westchester and personally work in the client service industry and am horrified by how we were treated. We spent thousands of dollars on this event, and this set a tone for a day that was so important to us and upset my mother and I tremendously. Any question I had to ask from then on, I was anxious and uncomfortable, and it was met with attitude. He was also rude to one of our guests who had forgotten the types of wine that were behind the bar when he was bartending telling her 'I just told you what kind of wine we have'. I hope ownership changes so I can return to this beautiful venue. Until then, be warned that you could be belittled and mistreated as you handover your money to someone who is meant to cater to you even if you ask for something incredibly basic. Nelson, you should think long and hard about how you treat people. The reviews about your attitude here are not anomalies. read more

They have really nice gardens in the back and you can enjoy a cocktail out on the terrace. I got a phone call day of reviewing my head count along with the number of rib orders we have ....the night of all of my table wanted the rib and our waitress came to say " only four pieces of rib where left"!!!!!!!???????? Are you kidding me??? I was embarrassed, it was at my suggestion that my friends gather to celebrate my 37th anniversary.... These folks drove over an hour to get here , starved all day so to be able to enjoy tonight, only to be told there was only four " small" slices of rib left!!!! Never again. read more

If this were written anywhere between 1995 and 2011, this review would boast a far higher rating, replete with raves and nostalgic tales and blissful memories. But alas, it is 2014, and things have changed. My Father and I have had our Thanksgiving tradition here for as long as I can remember. Up until 2011, the experiences have left us stuffed, grateful and satiated, to say the very least. Without further ado, I present to you some specifics about what has changed. Two nights ago, we sat after a short wait at a great table by the fireplace (although my Father had specifically asked to NOT be seated at the fireplace. But no matter; we were okay with it.) Our waiter, a very pleasant fellow (though clearly a touch inexperienced), took our drink orders and left us to look at the menu (he didn't know what a Chivas Regal was, nor that they didn't have any drink specials; but no matter. We were happy to be there!) And on we went. Fast forward to the receipt of our appetizers. Both my Father and I ordered the baked stuffed clams, and they were cold. Not tepid, but refrigerator cold. All of them. When we told the waiter, he apologized profusely and returned roughly ten minutes later with new ones. Mine were hot; my Father's were tepid. When the turkey came, my Father was wholly sans utensils, and there were no serving utensils with the enormous platter of turkey. Once we had eaten and ordered dessert, my coffee that arrived was COLD. Genuinely cold. I felt like I'd been beaten by a gang in an alley by this point, so I didn't raise a hand in protest. During the course of our two hour stay, I heard LITERALLY four different groups complain about how the restaurant "wasn't what it used to be," and two different groups audibly complained to the hostess on the way out. After over two decades of attending this restaurant, I do believe we'll return only with a scowl and a large mark of skepticism, if only in hopes that our opinions will be defied and we will find a vastly improved restaurant where the 2014 version used to stand. read more

An older place with an old-world charm to it. At Christmas time, it's practically a winter village complete with a large Gingerbread house. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT!! In December 2019, we met with the owner of the Travelers Rest to book a party for January 2020. We told her exactly what we were looking for and she got back to us with a very reasonable price per head, so we put down a $500 deposit and booked our party. One week prior to the party we called and left a message for the owner, only to get a call back from the "New Owner" of the Travelers Rest. The thought of this worried me right away. We felt betrayed by the original owner, who did not make us aware of the restaurant being sold. Although the New Owner was aware of the price and everything that was promised to us, we were told that the price that we were quoted by the original owner was not enough money for what we were getting, he suggested a buffet instead of a sit down dinner, he tried to change our pasta course, to a pasta as part of the entrees instead. We were promised an open bar, he tired to make it into a cash bar. It was then that he told us that we needed to guarantee him a certain amount of people and it need to be paid in full prior to the party. He also said we needed to pay in cash or our price would not be honored. He told me if we were not happy we could take our party to a different venue, but we would lose our $500 deposit. This was not what was discussed at all with the original owner. My mistake was no signed contract, just a paper that she wrote on. After disputing back and forth with him, we made some minor changes, came to an agreement and moved forward. Our party of 76 guests went very well, it was supposed to be from 6:30-10:30. At 9:30 we asked if we could extend the party to 11:00, an extra half hour, not only were we charged an extra $200, we then had to be reminded of the "deal" that we were given and that if we had originally dealt with him, we would have never received it. After paying a large amount of money for this party, we asked if one of the children who had a nut allergy could have a scoop of ice cream instead of a piece of cake, we were told we were told we had to pay an additional $5 for it. Are you kidding me? Keep your ice cream!! You act as if you didn't make any money that night. You should have never tried to change anything! You should have done everything to reassure us that we were receiving everything that we were promised from the beginning. Instead you caused nothing but unnecessary stress and aggravation. What kind of a person are you? What a horrible businessman you are, you should be very ashamed of yourself. Remember, my party could have brought you other parties, but believe me it NEVER will. I really wouldn't anticipate the NEW OWNER of this restaurant lasting very long. POOR NEW BUSINESS DECISIONS !!!!!! read more

The prime rib was excellent but they over cooked the rack of lamb even after i told the waiter twice medium rare, and don't over cook it. The first thing about lamb, you never over cook it, samething with fish. The waiter said it was the temperature being to high but neglect is more like it. Other people have complained about the food being over cooked or over salted as well. If i were running the place this would have never happen and id have more specials on the menu with cheaper prices that are more affordable for the whole family and would make customers happy. The all you can eat prime rib was worth the 29.95 but other things on the menu were over priced. The place was very nice inside. read more

I was here on Christmas day with my family and even though it was late in the day the server was very accommodating and knowledgeable. The food was decent and included appetizer salad , entree, dessert and coffee. I've been going in on Sundays - they have a wide assortment of complete dinners for $30. Including my favorite wiener schnitzel with potato pancakes. I really enjoy the decor - too many of the restaurants these days are cold and sparse. read more

I have been coming here for years. We go at least twice a year, sometimes more. Every experience has been the same. A lot of food on an old world plate with the same wait staff circulating in the same three rooms ( main dinning and the two down stairs). The food has always been exceptional and plentiful! So when it came to determine our Valentine dinner plans, Travelers Rest was a no brainer! I called a few weeks ago to booked for Valentines because they have Prime Rib Fridays. I asked if they were running the special on Valentines day and was told yes. I was happy because I felt I was going to a place that had good food and wasn't going to rip me off and it doesn't hurt my loves their Prime Rib! I showed up tonight and something didn't seem right. It was odd the Christmas scene at the entrance was still there. We checked in with new people? Then they sat us down in the tap room! The tap room? We never sat in the tap room nor did we book it! It always had a light fare in there. Things were odd. The table cloth was black and filthy. It was like someone sprinkled pepper and salt all over it. The water glasses looked like they has pieces of fresh squeezed oranges on it. In the years I have gone here, I have never seen it in this bad of shape. They replaced the table cloth and glasses. Then we were handed a giant wine/cocktail/beer menu? The wine and cocktail selection took up 95% of the page with a tiny section for beer. A german restaurant with a tiny beer selection? After we order a drink each we were hand a smaller menu. This was the dinner menu. The menu was just one sheet of paper like you would see at a dinner added to the book they give you. Travelers always had a nice leather bound book with lots of options. This time it was a sheet of paper. On this sheet of paper was a prefix menu at a price tag of $69 for: 1 app or soup, 1 salad, 1 entree, 1 dessert. If you picked the expensive options maybe you'd come a little closer to the price? Maybe? May our selections because we knew the food was excellent. We accepted the price because we expected the plates we've always had. Well...here comes disappointment...the plates were smaller. I ordered the claims. I got three. Then the beet salad. The salad was jammed on the plate. Clumped up spinach with the beautiful thin beets piled on top instead of displayed on a larger plate. It was like they were trying trick you into thinking you were getting more because it was jammed on a tiny plate but they actually cut the size in (I'd say half!). Dinner I got the schnitzel. I normally I would have veal layer across the plate with large potato pancakes and vegetables. Again, a lot less on a smaller plate. They old world plates were not there. It was the oblong plates you'd see at the dinner that a aide of fries come on- very disappointing! Dessert was smaller too. While dinning, I over heard the owners sold the restaurant and the new owner had visions of changing the place. Obviously the first vision is less food with a higher price! Tonight's experience left me wondering if I will go back! We have always booked a table for 6 for Easter this year we might have to try somewhere new... If the old owners are reading this, thank you for the years of exceptional food and service! For the new owner, I think before you hand A higher price menu out to your customers, you should take down the cheaper menu at the door. That was a nice slap on the way out! read more
