For my entree, I had the Chicken Marsala with mashed potatoes and vegetable medley. When I tell you the Marsala sauce is to die for!!! Out of this world!! The portion size was generous and the chicken was cooked to perfection. I made a reservation at this restaurant for NYE for my boyfriend and I and had requested a quiet table which they said they would try to accommodate. When I got there they gave us a table near the entrance where it was cold and in the center near a large party. I asked the hostess several times to be seated near the wall where she had just seated 2 older people but she had a very poor attitude, was rude, dismissive and would not accommodate us making excuses that it was nye and they were full. NYE is exactly why she should have tried so that my partner and I could have felt comfortable. This woman needs to learn basic costumer service skills and how to be a decent human being. We left and went to a different restaurant as a result and I am disappointed we didn't even get an opportunity to try this place. Needless to say parking is also very hard to find there. read more

This spot is cool. Nice inside, didnt take pictures inside cause it was carry out. A few days ago i ordered from here. Took a while about 30mins however the food was tasty and $25. The price was good. A lot of food i ate pasta I think 3 times from the what they consider half a tray and i had to throw some out still. The fried calamari was tasty and they gave 3 marinara sauces. Thats good. The aluminum kept the food piping hot. Im not a huge Italian fare fan. However on occassion i do get a palate for it. I reccommend this spot. read more

OMG! A complete disaster! Had dinner there a couple weeks ago with some friends and I can't say much good about this place. Used to go there years ago when they were smaller but a bad meal kept me away for years. Wanted to try again and will NEVER go back. Had reservations but the person at the door could not understand that and was trying to find a table for us when there was one right there! Eventually he realized and sat us. 45 minutes later,,,,,, I had to fine someone to take out order! Really? When the meals finally came out they actually forgot one of our orders. 3 people were done with dinner when we finally got them to bring her dinner! They did comp one which is the least they could do. To get the check we had to disturb the waitress from visiting with friends. Definitely a lost business. read more

Il Cafone deserves 5 stars for so many reasons. The food is delicious. I order a different dish every time, and it's never a disappointment. I recommend the Rigatoni a la Melanzana - baked rigatoni with eggplant. I don't even like eggplant, but I loved this. If not, go for the chicken parmesan. Their signature sauce is a red sauce with (I would guess) a splash of mascarpone bc it's truly a pink sauce, but not vodka sauce. Recently hosted a bridal shower here, and it was not only seamless service but also so affordable. Something like $26pp for 3 courses plus tax and gratuity. Guests had a house salad (rich house italian dressing with parmesan) penne vodka, and choice of 5-6 different entrees. All guests were very impressed and many will be returning for dinner plans. They were very accomodating for the shower of around 50 guests, and service was swift. Plus- BYOB wine and beer. They even helped us set up a champagne bar at the front entrance! Even better, they serve hard liquor as well, so patrons can buy whatever cocktails they want as well. If I had to offer a critique, I wish they would improve the lighting situation, as it was a little dim for a midday bridal shower. But by the time food and drink was rolling out, nobody noticed or cared! read more

We heard that Roberto was back and that the restaurant is back to the way it was years ago. So after 3 years, we went back and it was phenomenal! I had my old favorite, pappardelle al forno. Amazing. My husband asked if they had eggplant rollatini but it wasn't on the menu. The chef said that was no problem & prepared it for him. It was also amazing. I came here today on Mother's Day, we made a reservation beforehand. So, there are 4 stars and I thought it would be great, but I was wrong. The service sucked: they bring us the menu, and only tell us the specials after we were ready to order. The waiter just rushed through the specials. We had to have him repeat it to understand. Then, they brought the hard, heated up bread after the appetizers. We ordered calamari, which was good. We ordered the baked , which the waiter said came in a wine sauce. When we got them. They were clams casino, didn't taste too good. We ordered penne a la vodka shrimp. It was good, but it wasn't true vodka sauce. My dad wanted to substitute something on another seafood dish and they quickly said nothing could be altered from the plates. We were almost done eating, before anyone came to check if we were ok. Had to hound a waiter down for a drink. I get that it was Mothers Day, but they should of had more people working. Then again no dessert menu, a different waiter cane and just listed them, which we could barely hear what she said. Would not recommend! Don't waste your time. read more

Now, the service is absolutely horrible, food is pricey and not worth the price, when the OWNER and his employees mess up what you ordered they cannot admit to messing it up and trying to fix the issue. Every standard Italian dish and they always have specials. They have a good drink menu-although it feels like these are all pre-made mixes thrown in a glass. I need to fess up that I'm biased because Il Cafone is where me and the Mrs. had our very first (real) dinner date, first anniversary dinner and years later a repast for someone in my immediate family. (You can understand why there's no way I'd be able to ever bash this place.) And just like that: it's been six years since we've been here but so glad we found our way back. In the time we've been gone they introduced rodizio (whaaaa?!) and a large flat-screen TV (ahhhhh?!) but they also got a liquor license and bar (yippie!). The only thing that actually matters is that they're still knocking out really delicious Italian food. Another new feature (at least for us who haven't visited in a while) - their "Sunset Special" from Monday through Thursday where you're getting an app, a salad (or soup), an entrée and then a dessert or coffee for the 'nice price' of $25-ish. The portions are extremely generous (I'm a proud member of the CLEAN PLATE CLUB and we still left with three doggy-bags) and everything - from their gravy ("sauce" for those that get cranky over semantics) to the well-seasoned and abundance of veggies in their pasta primavera - everything was well-executed. A bottle of (completely acceptable/decent) white wine for under $20?! At a restaurant?! Yes, actually. A friendly and cool crew working there (one rushed one of my kid's entree when she could tell he was running on fumes and needed a big plate of carbs stat, another giving me a freebie ice cream at the end by accident) to boot. This was an unexpected visit. All of my usual Italian restaurants in Rutherford were closed early Sunday afternoon, so I needed an alternative. Drove into Lyndhurst and saw the very unassuming Il Cafone. Wow, what a great surprise! Lovely cloth covered tables with a sophisticated rustic feel caught my eye immediately. The owner, Antonio, and his wife Matilda seated and served us, which I love. They were ok with me bringing my own bottle wine to have with dinner. My dining desires were very specific today - a good steak, broccoli rabe and pasta. They open with lightly toasted thinly sliced Italian bread served with oil garlic and parsley. Sounds simple, but very tasty. Salad was so fresh with quality mixed greens and a delicious dressing reminiscent of a lite Caesar dressing. My NY strip steak was perfectly cooked with mixed veggies and French fries. I ate the pasta I desired from my company's linguini and clam sauce platter, which was enormous (she couldn't finish it). Strawberry sorbet and a double latte finished my meal perfectly. I love this place. I love the food. And I love the owners, Antonio and Matilda. What a great place! Ok, where do I start, we have been ordering here for so long I don't know how long it's been. We ordered a work birthday lunch today and let me tell you all, if you have not tried Il Cafone please do or you are so missing out. We all ordered different dishes and we were licking the plate. I mean right down to their bread. We ordered a half tray of the house salad which is yummy and they gave us each our own tins with our own dressing. Here is the kicker, Juan who is such a doll gave us two free desserts with a candle tapped to the top it for the birthday girls. Now how cute is that, who does this? BTW, the portions are huge !!!! I know you all want to know what we ate. Chix Parm, Chix Francese, Chix Marsala, Filet of sole, Grilled Salmon, Veal scallapini, Rigatoni con Melanza, Chix Piccata . I always try to come to IL Cafone when I fly up to NJ. It is a 20mile drive from where I stay and work but it is well worth the trip. Price are great for what you get and you even bring you own wine and they cork, pour, keep it iced as well. There's a Wine Pro 3doors down. Grilled Portobello with Balsamic is wonderful! Chicken Senape (or Pork Chop) is sinful! ($13) Chicken Parm is simple looking but OMG! ($12) My favorite Emilliana. Veal with some godly goody sauce!!!! They have been one of our favorites for many years and now with the addition of Rodizio and a liquor license they are even better. We love the calamari and caprese salad. The bolognese sauce is excellent and always several seafood and pasta specials. This last visit I tried the Rodizio and was very impressed. With the meats we were served a Caesar Salad to start and I had their saffron risotto. It was perfectly cooked, creamy and al dente. The beef cuts were all prepared to our requested medium rare and the sirloin was particularly tasty. The sausage and chicken were also very good. I didn't love the ribs (not sure why they needed to put a sweet bbq sauce on them). To end things off our waiter brought over pineapple with cinnamon and sliced off strips which he flambed with Sambuca. All in all a very enjoyable meal and reasonably priced wines as well. When did this place get listed? I tried to write a review for it a few months ago, but couldn't find it! Weird, cuz some of the reviews are dated from a while back...Anyway, here goes: For all the travel that I do and my love of Italian places, this place is very good. I've had the eggplant parm and also the PENNE ALLA VODKA CON GAMBERONI - which is penne with pink vodka sauce & shrimp, and they had a salmon penne one day that was awesome also. 3 times in, 3 times completely satisfied. They serve their breadsticks with their own garlic basil olive oil dip, which is very good also and the portions aren't ridiculously large, but very filling. Great lunch specials. Parking - probably only downside, it's all street parking or neighborhood, but it wasn't that crowded around lunch, so I was fine the days I went. Service was nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home about either. That's not a bad thing for me though, they were friendly and I got exactly what I was expecting :) Thumbs up to the waitstaff. One thing that's awesome about a lot of NJ restaurants is that you can bring your own wine and have them cork it for you. I love that. One of my favorite restaurants, great classic and innovative Italian dishes. Service is excellent. They used to be a Byo, they recently got their liquor license, the wine list and cocktails are very reasonably priced, when we went recently we brought a bottle of wine with us because we did not know that they now serve liquor and the happily opened our wine at no charge. Some of my favorites are the polenta with mushrooms, grand misto salad, risotto with tomato, smoked Mozzerella and red onions. I have never had a bad meal there and the desserts are great too. read more

Everyone from the owner to the support staff is extremely accommodating. They were great before Covid, and even during these challenging times they are still making great tasting food and service. One of the best places for Italian food - I live in Rutherford and I would rather come here for Italian. Get the chicken parm with angel hair pasta!!
