I'm not sure if it's owned by an Italian but all the workers are Hispanic. With that being said, it is very basic pizzeria food that lacks authentic oversight. The food was very greasy and the marinara lacked soul. Again, typical of the workers not growing up on this food. They do not have a go by or really know what it's suppose to taste like. This gentleman or lack of gentleman is highly highly dangerous! He assaulted me with a pizza box. He threw at me with full force, as well as hot grease, went all over my dress body and caused severe burns, which I will have investigated. I'm currently at the police, and he stopped me and followed me to the police station where I am filing a report. He's now lying to them and saying it's untrue. Beware!! They need to have their permit for food revoked if they even have one! I actually went there twice, once after hiking Kearny Riverfront and once after hiking the full length of Branch Brook Park. I got pizza both times, regular cheese the first and marghegrita the second. Both were quite good. .... But I was also impressed by the fact that, even though I was there to to just grab quick pizza before I got the train going home, each time I went, I coincidentally happened to wind up near the same two people having full-course dinners. I was visiting my sister and wanted to order some pizzas to go. She recommended this place as her local spot. I ordered over the phone, and noticed afterwards there's a 10% discount on your total order if you order online. In any case, I'll keep that in mind for next time. I ordered a large 16' inch cheese pizza so this review is solely on their pizza pie and service. I'm told the order would be ready in 20 minutes. Mind you this is on a Saturday at 12:30pm. 20 minutes later, boom, my pizza was ready as I walked through the door to pick it up. Now the verdict of the pizza tasting. It was delicious! Food: 4 stars Service: 2.5/3 I came here for my mom's birthday. We were a group of 12. We asked to do split checks and right after that we got unfriendly vibes. After sitting for a bit the waitress asked us what we wanted very abruptly, in a demanding way. None of us were ready and we felt pressured. I got fettuccini Alfredo which was good. Everyone else seemed to enjoy there food too. We never got asked how our food was or if we needed anything else. We had one main server and 2 others helping her. The servers would try to take plates away without asking if we were done. The main server was very unfriendly and rarely smiled the other two were nicer. Neither looks like much but if you pass this place by you will miss some fantastic food brought out by very friendly servers and overseen by a terrific owner. We ate family style and had some terrific dishes including the veal braciola which may not be on the menu. We had a pizza, a salad, a pasta, and an eggplant dish in addition to the veal dish. One of our go to Pizzeria/Restaurants. Food is always excellent and their sauce is authentic. We are regulars and always treated well by the waitresses here. The restaurant is split in half with both a casual and a more formal dining area. On this visit we had one of my favorites, Veal and Shrimp Francese. This dish is always amazing and I feel one of the best Francese sauces I have ever eaten. Veal is tender and the shrimp is on point. I found this pizza place on the slice app because it was hard to find on yelp. I wish i had pictures for you but my wife and i were famished. The pizza didn't last long enough for me to realize that i need to review the restaurant. We loved the pizza, also we picked up and didn't dine in. It was packed inside. Today I ate there with my father on a cold Tuesday evening and the place was fairly empty. They have friendly waitresses who are happy to take your order. They have very good help. La Sicilia is located at 155 Washington Blvd. directly across the street from the Belleville Municipal Township Hall. They have takeout as well as catering and home delivery. We both had a salad which was a generous portion and then we had the Seafood Salad which is large and hearty. I had the Cavatelli with meatballs and my Dad had the Chicken Francaise with rice. Both entrees were excellent. We had too much food and had to brown bag the leftovers. My Father had a Coke and I had a Snapple, no liquor. The place is quite large and can fit about 250 people at capacity. They have flat screen televisions and they serve water with ice upon sitting down to order. They are generous in their portions and the value any quality of the food far exceeds any cost. La Sicilia is BYOB and does serves lunch. The next time I go there I would like to try the pizza, especially Sicilian slice! Highly recommend. Family friendly. They also had a post in their window offering 50% off on all lunches for furloughed federal employees. i thought that was a generous offering on their part due to the government shutdown. Not impressed at all.. my husband and I moved to the area last year and are still trying to find good spots to eat. We ordered fettuccine alfredo, penne vodka & a cannoli. The only positive of our meal was that it came piping HOT. Everything else was a disaster. Both pastas were seriously overcooked. The alfredo sauce was separated and really greasy. The vodka sauce didn't even look like vodka sauce. The chicken was supposed to be grilled but seemed like it was just chicken fingers cut up into pieces. The wafting aroma of garlic and tomatoes, the photos of a young Frank Sinatra and other NJ legends who seemed to have dined here, the ubiquitous sign of any NJ Italian gastronomical landmark: the Sopranos cast members photos, all of these things put you right at ease, even before the fabulous food is set down at your table. There is something about this place that reminds me of a family event or two that Ive been to where the tables were long, family gathered around, a never ending parade of food.. yea, this place is it. Don't expect white gloved tuxedo-ed waiters and china here- this IS a pizzeria; and what a pizzeria it is. Ive been here once so far, and I feel as if I should be in my car right now on my way back, it is SO good here. On recommendation of Yelpers here, I shared the Palermo pie here with my brother Geoff- I am SO glad I did. Words fail to describe the experience but I will try. The pie is a relatively thin crust Sicilian pie unlike anything I have ever had. Its like a cross between a grandmas pie and a Sicilian pie, but OH so much more. Its thin crust snaps under slight pressure from your bite, softly padded above by fresh mozzarella directly above, then a fresh, super garlic-y sauce with fresh herbs on top. Its like a normal pizza in reverse order- dough, cheese, sauce. And how fantastic it is. I heard some complain one way or another about this pie, but all I can say is- do not listen to them. What MAY make some complain is if they took this pie home or delivered it. ANY pizza that is not eaten DIRECTLY FROM THE OVEN will SUCK if eaten any other way. Pizza is like art found in nature: its temporary, fleeting- to be enjoyed for that moment like a snowflake on a windshield, a sunset, wisps of clouds, lightning in the sky... I can wax poetic all day about this pizza- it is THAT GOOD! We took two cannoli home as well, an hour or more after us demolishing this pie between two people, we braved the cannoli, and OMG is what I have to say- fresh crisp shells overflowing with fresh fine sweetened whole milk ricotta cheese, delicately flavored with orange and rose water? Grandma would approve. Now all I have to do is get my mom and grandma over here next time so they can experience this too. I have no idea what happened to the quality of the San Remo pasta; it isn't a cheap item on the menu, and it used to be creamy flavorful had a good amount of eggplant, cheese, tomatoes and olives. They've definitely changed the way they make it or whoever makes it because what I got tonight was definitely a bowl of cold, bland tasting noodles soaked in oil with 3 pieces of tomato. What a heartbreaking disappointment... gross at best. I guess (and let's hope) the only good thing left over in this place is the Palermo pie. read more

4 stars for being one of the few places open during the great non-blizzard of March 2017, which caused pretty much every other restaurant in the area to close; minus one star for hilariously scattered service. They messed up our order. I don't usually dock points for that because I care more about the food than the service, but this place went way beyond just messing up our order. While we were waiting for our order, we overheard them take multiple phone calls from customers complaining that their delivery order never showed up (they refused to do anything to make it right), and one customer who was sitting down in the restaurant waited so long for their order that they had to get up grab someone from the kitchen to place their order. Sitting in the restaurant and watching it operate was like watching the "before" part of "Kitchen Nightmares". Oh, and after the bad service, it took them so long to bring our pizza out that it was cool by the time it arrived. It was still ok, but I'll bet it would have been better if it was hot. read more

On gritty Washington Ave., in Belleville, it has an innocuous, even drab, appearance from the front, but proves to be one of the better Italian restaurants in NJ. Although born and bred in NJ (as Redd Foxx might have said, "I'm not sure where I was buttered,"), I'm sort of a NY snob when it comes to Italian restaurants. I've never had better Italian food than what I got in NY (with the exception of Italian food in Italy, which is vastly different than what we get at Italian restaurants in NJ, or anywhere else in America, but I digress...). But this comes close. It's definitely a place that I'll be seeking out again in the future. A friend mentioned this place to me, and I decided to give it a try. We ate a lot of food. Chicken cutlets with broccoli rabe, a thin pizza with anchovies...it had not much cheese on it that I could see and didn't look too appealing, but it was delicious, linguini with clams, lasagna. Way too much food, but I enjoyed every bite of it. One half of the place is a conventional restaurant; the other half is a less formal pizzeria. Service was friendly and efficient. The dessert was nothing special, but if you have room for ANY dessert after an epic meal like this...Mr., you're a better man than I! Lots of celebrity photos on the wall. I didn't give them more than a cursory look--- I recognized the late James Gandolfini and one of the Housewives of NJ. If you like them , take that as an additional endorsement. If you don't, don't let that deter you from one of the better Italian dining experiences in the Garden State. You'll thank me. read more

La Sicilia is not a fancy place but it is authentic Italian and family-friendly. It is the place to be on the weekends. Everyone was there fresh off of little league. The people are loud and you can't eat there and be shy. The tables are communal. We had a lovely chat and meal with our neighbors. I was fascinated with the big plates of tripe and pasta. Sadly, my group only ordered a Palermo Pie to share. At just $13 it was a steal. The Palermo Pie is a square pie similar to a grandma slice but not as thick. Cheese is on the bottom and loads of tomato sauce on top. I've never seen or had anything like it. They also use a good amount of olive oil. I'm still thinking about this pie. The owner Joe Ali came by many times to greet us. My friend speaks Italian so they were going back and forth real fast. I had no idea what they were talking about but Joe encouraged us to keep eating. That we did by finishing off with dessert. The tartufo, sfogliatella, and cannolo was amazing. Instead of each item being it's own dish and us chipping away at it, La Sicilia gave us all individual plates and divided the sfogliatella and tartufo. I think I am sfogliatella's biggest fan now. It's like a sweet croissant. Big thumbs up for the tartufo and cannolo as well. The cannolo wasn't piped as beatifully as I'd liked but the cheese was delicious and the shell was perfect. I like to frequent La Sicilia often for their Palermo Pie, but if I have a chance, eating inside is also great due to their great food! This Palermo Pie that I am talking about is not your typical, square, Sicilian pizza. What is different about this pie is that there is a dominance in sauce than cheese. It is a thin pie with the chunky tomato/marinara sauce having a garlic-like taste to it. Let me just say that I like cheese on my pizza and even though the Palermo Pie does lack cheese, it tastes great in another aspect. It is definitely a unique pie to say the least. And of course, if you personally want more cheese in it, there is nothing stopping you from adding some parmesan cheese yourself! Even though the slices are thin, the amount of sauce and such on the pizza can deceivingly fill you up. As for eating inside, this place can get packed at times, so be prepared to wait a little during peak time. Some of the food that I've eaten here which I enjoyed were the fried calamari (I love the Italian style of fried calamari!), Chicken Parm, Chicken Francaise, Lasagna, and Fusilli pasta with tomato meat sauce. And.. for dessert, you cannot go wrong with ending the meal with a cannoli! This is a very nice local spot that I always enjoy visiting. FYI: This place is CASH only, so bring those bills! read more

We walked in and at about 3:30 in the afternoon and it was packed so i thought to myself, "wow, maybe my parents might have been right". so after looking at everyones dishes as i was walking to the counter. Which I have to say everything loooked so inviting. My mother said to try the Palermo pizza, but it was another slice of heaven that caught my eye. The Bruchetta slice looked like Italy on a piece of dough. So i decided on that. My first bite was one of my most memorable and intimate bites in my pizza eating life. First of all the aroma of this pizza puts u in trance. Then u go in for the first bite and the perfectly basil/garlic seasoned tomatoes on top of the fresh muts all that on top of a thin crispy piece of dough. My head was engulfed in pure pizza paradise. Overall, I found the entrees and desserts here to be much better than the appetizers, and I can speak for a lot of the menu. The green salad was as simple as you'd expect, but very bland. The seafood salad tasted fresh, but lacked seasoning. If you have to go with one appetizer, I'd recommend the stuffed long hot peppers. The veal braciole and Palermo pie were the standouts. Absolutely delicious. If you have to go with one dessert, don't be fooled by the tacky photos in the menu and get the tartufo. Not sure if they make it there, but if they don't, I want to know where they got it from. Take some time to look at all the photos on the wall in the take out section of the restaurant. La Sicilia's Palermo pizza is pure perfection, a masterpiece! I want to say it is the best pizza in NJ. (I've eaten a lot of Jersey pizza in my day.) It has all the qualities I adore. I love grandma style. I love thin crust. I love tomato sauce loaded with garlic and fresh herbs. The sauce is really special. The only other pizza that I've had that is similar is at Adrienne's on Stone St in the Financial District, which is also a favorite of mine. But La Sicilia is a true Italian mom and pop shop in the neighborhood and I could tell they put a lot of heart and soul into their food. Oh yeah! I usually say no to square pizza. I don't like Sicilian pizza, it's doughy and heavy. This time I said yes to square pizza, specifically the Palermo pie. It's essentially a thin crust square pie. I will say that it was a bit heavy on the tomato sauce (and I like my cheese to dominate the sauce, in fact, I can do without sauce at all) BUT this time, I will admit that it was DELICIOUS sauce and I did not much mind it asserting its dominance over my pizza. I added some Parmesan on top and that definitely took it to the next level. Overall, it was definitely good pizza. Different from what I'd usually order but yummy and enjoyable. It made me realize that a square pie can be a good pie! Garlic knots were eh. Not garlicky enough and a little burnt. Cannoli was pretty good. Really good service! Just ordered pizza and it was near closing time but was brought utensils, plates, cheese, salt/pepper to the table by the friendly staff. It does have somewhat of a communal sitting scenario. Basically to help you understand, there are probably about 8 long tables (4 on each side of the restaurant and seating about 8 people each) so if you are in there during a busy time, you might have to share a table. Even though La Sicilia is known for its Palermo Pie, which is easily one of the top 5 pizza's in the area, I just wasn't in the mood for pizza and opted for cavatappi with broccoli (the pasta came a bowl of house salad and nice warm bread). The palermo pie here is off the hook. Don't come here and not get it. The flavors will explode in your mouth from the first bit onwards. My only complaint is that the pie is so incredibly thin that you need more of it to really be satisfied. I constantly compare this square pizza to Bruno's in Clifton, NJ and have to give Bruno's the edge. The pie there is just substantially more filling than the palermo here. I've also had the chicken parm and penne dinner here and it was above average. All in all, if you want flavor and a great pizza, get the palermo pie. It is on the brink of epic. read more

I've finally found my Italian grandma that I've never had! She's been hiding out in La Sicilia's Belleville NJ lol. So it's Friday and it's lunch time. I figured I would try my luck with the famous Palermo pie. My bro and I needed to catch up on Blacklist dvr, so takeout order was placed. All I can say is YOOOO OMG that Palermo pie is SERIOUS! My car smelled like Grandmas amazing sauce had been seasoned and simmering on low all day! The pie was amazing. Exterior crust nice and crunchy and interior crust(center pie) was soft. It had a thin layer of mozzarella cheese on top of dough -Barely noticeable. In final it was topped with an Amazing lightly chunked tomato, garlic and hint of basil sauce! I think I already said too much, but the pie is serious yall! A must try most def and reasonably priced at $16.
