Chicken fingers and fries pie. Very disappointing.

I had mixed feelings going here. I went when they first opened and wasn't impressed at all. My son recently said their buffalo chicken pie was "awesome". Ok, so I gave in and ordered from there. Got a Buffalo Chicken pie, a chicken tenders and fries pie and two orders of buffalo wings. Let's start with the easy review. My son is right; the buffalo chicken pie is definitely on point. Make sure you ask them to put the ranch on top. Their buffalo pie is a solid 8.6 in my books. The chicken fingers and fries pie. I wanted the Mac and cheese pie but got vetoed by my wife and we went with the chicken tenders and fries pie. EXTREMELY dry. Chicken was dry, fries were dry, no sauce (that I could tell). It needed something. Whether be brown gravy on top or pizza sauce like I thought I read it came with, it needed something to moisten this up. I honestly went through 3 cans of soda to get through this pizza. This pie is a 6.2 in my opinion. With that said..... both pies had VERY good crusts. Not too thick and very tasty. The buffalo wings. I'm open minded. My buddy and I have been reviewing various places that do JUST wings. With that said, we've been having some pretty high level wings. So I kept that in mind. They were good for pizza place wings. Here's where I'm confused. 2 orders of wings and neither order came with any blue cheese or ranch. How can that be?? Do I have to ask for it and I just didn't know?? They gave us celery and carrot strips. What were we supposed to dip them or the chicken in? Very disappointing. Overall, 1 buffalo chicken pie, 1 chicken tender and fries pie, 20 wings and a small bag of fries came to $72. A little steep. Those that know me know I have no problems paying if it's worth it. Usually I set the bar of a pizza place by its cheese, margherita or grandma's pie. I went a little exotic here. I opted not to to do a video review before we even picked it up. When I get around to trying the foundation cheese pie, then I can get a true feel of this place. All around rating is a 7.0. I hate giving round numbers but I hate to go in the 6s quite yet and not comfortable going into the 7s.

The restaurant is a former residential property and the interiors is no frills. People come here for the food. We were comped an appetizer as well as a dessert and the service is fast and first rate! Tonight I had the Meatball soup, classic Lasagna and a side of meatballs along with a house salad and several Iced Teas. I was too stuffed for dessert and I love coming here because I know there isn't a poor selection on the menu. Located on Schuyler Avenue close to the Lyndhurst border, La Venere works for parties of two or large groups for parties or special events. North Arlington is changing, but there are constants and thankfully La Venere continues to impress and flourish. Love Italian old school? Check out La Venere and you be disappointed! This is the first time eating there and the interior was festive with holiday decorations and they have rooms for private parties. The staff is professional and aims to please as they do have daily specials. Both myself and my father had the Shrimp Ravioli special and the Mozzarella and Prosciutto with cherry tomatoes and the Carrot Cake. We both had coffee and bottled water and Iced Tea. This is a well supported local establishment as the place was fairly full for a Monday evening, but there were many large parties during this holiday season. The food is fine, and because I have never dined here before I probably should have gotten something different. The service was excellent, but the food was a bit underwhelming. I would return, but probably order something from the main menu v being lazy. My understanding is that the place has been open a decade, so they have a strong following. I wish I had ordered something different.

Highly recommend…read morecoming here for dinners, dates, events, etc. Came here on a Sunday night around 7 and it was busy. You could tell that this is THE spot for all the OG residents and you can tell that they are loyal to this place. I can see why as I was pleasantly surprised as to the quality of the food. The restaurant is very simple. It doesn't overwhelm you with too many decorations and really helps show how long it has been around. Not saying it dingy but saying that it shows its tenure in Lyndhurst (in a good way) Caesar salad: one order is big enough for two people. Salad is crisp, croutons are perfectly sized and dressing is light. You do not feel extremely thirsty or overwhelmed from the cheese here. 5/5 Calamari: although not crispy like other places (which is the way I like it) it was still very good. The calamari was fresh and not overly battered and it was a very generous portion. If you like your calamari extremely crispy, you will not like this place. If you like your calamari with a little batter, you will love this place: 4/5 Penne vodka: not to toot my own horn but I don't think their vodka sauce is as good as mine.... BUT still one of the better sauces I've had out at a restaurant. Once again, generous portions and fresh. 4/5 Filet mignon and shrimp (ordered medium rare): the filet mignon was extremely soft and tender. It came in an amazing gravy with a side of vegetables doused with a generous portion of garlic. I devoured everything, even the gravy and wished I had more. 5/5 Tiramisu: their tiramisu is on the sweeter side and you don't taste much coffee. If that's the way you like it, you will love it. I liked it regardless because it was on the house.

(But time can be slippery and it took a bit longer than expected for a follow-up visit.) I'm happy to report that first time was not a fluke and this place IS worthy of putting into steady rotation*. (* - if money's not an issue) I'm boring - both visits I went with the (homemade) pasta specials and they were incredible. The Mrs. is equally boring and got the branzino each time. (And loved it both times.) One kid tried the (gulp, $60) steak special and kept raving about it. (Well, he wasn't keen on the zucchini but what teen really digs that veg, right?) The other kid loves bolognese and was happy with their version. A lovely small and warm restaurant. Limited menu with a handful of specials. It's not cheap. (A wee bit over $50 a person and we didn't get appetizers or dessert and only had sparkling water.) BYOB. (Limited) street parking. The host/owner - you won't find a more inviting and personable figure who is clearly proud of what he's created. Is a part of me tempted to dock a few stars because the owner was happy to see one of my kids wearing an AC Milan jersey the day before they were set to clash with my team, AS Roma? Of course! (But that match ended in a 1-1 draw so I'll be nice... this time!)
