[A decade later, my original review needs a sprucing up...] Rutherford is an interesting town, right? Where else can you find multiple shoe repair shops ("cobbler" - there's a Scrabble bingo word for y'all!) rubbing elbows with state-of-the-art apartment complexes, and a smattering of 'hip' and 'hot' new restaurants that keep getting rave write-ups and making all sorts of "Best of..." lists. If you're a working stiff that doesn't want to break the bank to feed your family - you can't help but appreciate that there's a place like Da Mario's that's not chasing 'likes' but remaining humble and knocking out damn good food that's affordable and tasty. The pizza is solid. Good taste, a satisfying crust, it's not going to lure any 'influencers' their way and that's fine. (Da Mario's doesn't look like a place that has any social media presence and I'd bet they still have a dedicated fax line!) The garlic knots looked 'basic' but they had a serious smack of flavor that took me by surprise, I can't lie. (And their mozzarella sticks were a hit with my kids.) And - per the usual - I must order cavatelli and broccoli when I see it - and they absolutely nail it. Not the most comfortable chairs to sit in? A table you're expecting to be a bit wobbly? Generic maps and drawings of Italy on the walls? The place is bare bones... nothing fancy, exactly what you're expecting from an old-school pizza joint. Crew behind the counter - awesome. Metered street parking (but this block is incredibly busy, so you'd be keen to drop a quick prayer to St. Frances of Rome - the patron saint of car drivers - to help you find a spot). Ordered from here the other night. Had a slice, which was okay & the slice was HUGE. I also ordered calamari which is a must for me whenever it's on the menu. Sadly, these were a huge miss for me. These were so chewy. I couldn't tell if maybe they were made from frozen instead of fresh. Also didn't love the batter or breading they were put in. My husband ordered the chicken parm sandwich which I tried which tasted good but due to the overall experience. I probably won't be ordering again. I really love this pizzeria. Whenever I come to Rutherford, I need to get my slices! Yesterday, I got a cheese slice and a margarita slice. Both were delicious. Today I am back for the same! We've actually been ordering from DaMario's for years now. Not only did we find the pizzas to be delicious, including the specialty pies (Love the Buffalo Chicken and the White Pie) We switch out to the sandwiches, wraps and calzones sometimes as well! The Cardinale, whether in a wrap or Hero, is always yummy! The Mario's Special Sub is a top-notch Italian Hero! The hot Subs are equally delish- we love the Eggplant, the Meatball Parm, even the sausage, pepper & egg is wonderful! The service is always great- since I make my orders by phone, I can only speak for how I was treated during my calls. I can honestly say, I've always had a pleasant person on the other end of the phone, who's been helpful as well, if I was stuck on what I really felt like having that particular night! What a gem on park ave! Mr and I had a long day and wanted to just grab a quick slice and he knew this spot was here. I had no idea this Italian restaurant was here and I feel like it's easy to miss but it's really worth a try. The pizza looked delicious, thin crust and loaded with toppings but the grilled chicken wrap on the menu really caught my eye. I went with that, it came with roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella. It was also drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. Mr went with the buffalo chicken wrap. Both were great, the chicken was perfectly grilled and a ton of it too. The cheese was fresh and plentiful too. It came with a choice of fries or salad and we went with fries this time. They're the type of fries that you can tell they're delicious just by looking at them. We also got a plain slice to try. It was delicious, the sauce was tasty and tons of cheese is never a bad thing. It was definitely a lot of food, we both took half our plates home. This restaurant has a TON of dinner options, it definitely not just a pizzeria. Chicken dishes, fish and pastas. Yummm. The service is also really really friendly. They make you feel like you're right at home. It's easy to do that because the place is nice and cozy but it shows in how they treat people too. I'd recommend this spot anyday. I dont know what the big deal is for this place. The server was pleasant. I came in lunchtime. Ordered a plain slice. Thin, no flop, but not much cheese. Bland. I had to jack it up with salt, garlic, and oregano. This place is overrated. I would have liked to try an eggplant parm, but now Im not sure. Classic pizza place like I grew up with and such a warm departure from chain, cookie cutter trash (and the fancy in your face overpriced fare). I love the older decor, solid build, clean, pleasant grateful, eager service. The ultimate compliment, my kids, super picky and well versed in Jersey pizza as well as across the country, said the pizza was great. We called in our order to sit and eat and it was pretty much ready when we arrived. Warm delicious bread and butter was dropped off right away. Eggplant parm was good but I wouldn't order it again. Salad, even the small, was large and fresh and my daughter commented how good it was. Hard to find the trio, price, service and quality but here it is. We were just passing through the area, so not sure we will get back, but if you're anywhere near, you'll appreciate your time here. read more

The neighborhood Italian you always hope to find in Northern NJ at lunchtime. Perfectly executed chicken Francaise with warm bread and butter and a friendly waitress - all for $7. Gets packed at 3pm with local schoolkids, but I'd definitely recommend this place. Liquor store next door is excellent too (and has free parking). Updated to 5 stars. Haven't found anywhere friendlier or as good value in the 2 years since I first reviewed, and they did repaint and freshen up the place. read more

This is our go to place when we want to order italian at work. It doesn't matter what you order, it's all good. My boss loves the shrimp and clams with red sauce. My coworker really liked the spinach ravioli in vodka sauce and I dabble in a little bit of everything. We have had no complaints about the food at all. Whenever we order, the person is always kind and attentive and delivery doesn't take forever. I think it says a lot about a place when even the seafood dishes are good so give it a go! read more

I use to work on the ave, twice in my lifetime (once, before the current owners)and i hated this place was a football throw away :) Every single thing they have is delicious. The pizza is always delcious from the regular slice to the special slices. Me and coworkers would fight over the cheesteak pizza that was topped off with another crust. (Forgot what they call it) im no small man, one slice i was good, two slices i needed a nap Thier french fries are delicious as well as the rest of the apps. Every sandiwch i ever got from them was amazing too. Cheesteak phenomenal. Turkey sandwich phenomenal. Money sandwich aka fat sandwiches like from the old Rutgers days. Staff is always great. White with tomato and eggplant is the favorite pie in our household. Linguini with white Clam sauce is up to par, and a generous portion as well, and they also send bread to sponge up the sauce. Eggplant rollatini is good, too. Again, generous portion that may leave you with a bit for lunch the next day. Delivery is always prompt, polite, and without issue as we order from them 2 to 3 times in a month. With so much pizza competition around these parts, it's important to have a strong product. Do not waste your time with this place. Ordered food over the phone while visiting the area for a concert. We ordered pizza, pasta and chicken cheese steak. The delivery took roughly 1 hour 15 minutes. Upon arrival of the delivery driver, the driver gave attitude towards us. The delivery guy hands us our ordered food. However, did not bring us the pizza we ordered. We asked the driver if he brought our pizza and his response "they never placed it in my delivery bag" First off I'm you're a delivery guy don't you double check the food to make sure you bring everything you need? Secondly, do not give the customers attitude, because you forgot the food that you're suppose to delivery. Lastly, he demands the money up front before he brings our pizza back. Solid find in my new neighborhood! Super friendly girl on the phone was so helpful, it was refreshing to talk to a young person who knew what they were talking about and had pride in the food she was selling. The pizza is fine, not the best I've ever had but perfect for the price and for this type of place (certainly not the worst!). What really shined was, surprisingly, the soups! The minestrone and pasta fagioli were amazing, will have both again. We also tried the eggplant parm sandwich and the chicken parm sandwich which were both excellent. This is strictly a pasta review. This pizza was good. Not bad. It hit the spot. But the pasta dishes are something u will remember. I had the Chicken Francaise and its pretty hard for a marsala or francaise to stick out when you're from Jersey and NY. I still remember how perfect this sauce was, and how simple the plate was. Served with bread of course. Perfectly cooked tender chicken with a light , fresh and just perfect sauce. The plain ol ziti was very good too. They have an extensive pasta menu. Just about everything you can think of and more. I will go back and try all the other pasta dishes I love with time. T My in laws live in these parts and I will have plenty of time to do so. I came here tonight with my husband, mother in law and a friend. My mother in law stated we had to come in for their pizza. So we went in, nothing special, same ambiance as any other pizza place. We sat down and was greeted by a super nice waitress. Ask us what we wanted to drink and handed out menus. We wanted bottled soft drink but the only carry cans with most soft drinks... Bummer when me and my husband share a drink and we prefer bottles. We browsed the menu and prices are pretty good not expensive at all but expensive when it came to the pasta entrees and dinner menu. Service: I can't say it was great. Waitress didn't have it together and had to ask the guy behind the counter basics questions on certain items and what each came with. I can't expect great service from a pizzeria but know the menu! Food: My husband ordered a meat Stromboli, my friend ordered a meatball sandwich, I ordered a cheesesteak special and my mother in law ordered a roast beef sandwich. The food was pretty great with the exception of my friends meatball hero. He ordered it with extra sauce and the sandwich was pretty dry and disappointed and so he asked if he can have more sauce and the waitress brought out a condiment cup of sauce. Just beware when it comes to ordering extra sauce and/or cheese because we got charged an extra 75 cents for extra sauce. That wasn't communicated to us when we ordered the extra sauce. I hate surprises. And it's awkward when paying for the meal when handed the check. My husband and friend communicated that they weren't told sauce costed extra and they had some nerve charging for it in the first place when her HAD to order more because his sandwich was dry. I guess the guy they spoke to was the owner but he only offered free sauce next time we were there to eat. My friend expressed we won't be coming back here again. Honestly, food was great but I wouldn't find myself going back here again. I'm from out of town and pizza places around my area would never charge me 75 cents for sauce.
