I'm local and had heard mixed things, but I figured I'd try it myself. I spent around $70 on three pasta dishes and garlic bread, which I was fine with--until we discovered part of the order was missing. Only my daughter had eaten her meal right away. The rest of us sat down to eat later or the next day and realized the shrimp scampi was missing from the order. I called the restaurant the next day to let them know, expecting a simple apology or even an acknowledgment of the mistake. Instead, I was basically called a liar. The person on the phone offered no apology or resolution, only saying nothing could be done until the manager came in. There was no customer service at all--just denial and indifference. The pizza was fresh out of the oven. Hardly any cheese and the sauce had a sour taste to it. David Portnoy gave it, I think a 6.8, which in Portnoy's world, isn't terrible. Finally made my way to A1 being that I pass it everyday. This started out like a rocket ship and slowly turned off course. We got the Penne Vodka pizza, ordered a Buffalo Chicken pie, Vodka chicken parm hero and broccoli rabe with sausage and hot peppers. The Penne Vodka Pie was phenomenal. It was SOOOOOO good. Crust was nice and crispy. Then my son went for the Buffalo Chicken and I'm thinking... that's odd that they put tomato sauce on it. But ok, maybe that's how they do it. He's eating it and he's like, this isn't spicy at all. So I had to try it and it was a chicken parm pie. Very disappointing. The Vodka chicken parm sandwich was average at best. The chicken was kind of dry and there was VERY minimal sauce on it. Definitely wouldn't recommend it. The broccoli rabe, sausage and hot peppers was a curveball. The sausage was done perfectly. I personally prefer mine a little well done and they were. Excellent. Broccoli rabe was awesome. The hot peppers were jalapeños. I wasn't expecting that. I was expecting Italian hot peppers. It just threw it off in my mind. It didn't flow well. My son also got Buffalo wings which he said was very good. Penne Vodka is definitely on point. Terrible, ordered a tuna wrap said it comes with lettuce & tomato it didn't have any on it and it was mostly celery hardly any tuna. Instead of going out for my birthday this year I decided to have a pizza party, because I'm an adult. I did some research online and quickly saw that A1 had the most and best reviews in the area. I called them in and placed my order, they were super friendly over the phone and made ordering a breeze. Since I was having a few people over I got 3 large pies. One cheese, one pepperoni, one half veggie and half anchovy. I also added in two order of calamari and some disco fries. When I got there they were boxing up my pizzas and they were literally steaming hot and perfection. It doesn't get better than that. Again, everyone was so so friendly. They boxed my whole order up and I was on my way. Everything really was delicious. The pizza toppings were fresh on every slice. Full disclosure: long before I moved into town me and my friends would pass A-1 and concoct elaborate and ridiculous ways to steal their "Pizza Guy" statue that stood watch at their front door. (But I grew up, moved to Bergen County and never did get to partake in a life of crime.) No better way to know if a pizzeria is legit: a plain pie (so you're not distracted with toppings) and garlic knots (an afterthought or are they putting some effort into their little creations). In a small town already packed with a lot of good pizza were A-1 going to sink or swim? Well - my family absolutely devoured the pie (great crust, good sauce, not greasy.) My kids are usually good for just a slice but they knocked back two each. The garlic knots didn't get as much praise as the pizza and we'd probably skip them the next time. If Jo-Jo's, Josie's and Gencarelli's are at the top of the pack in Lyndhurst, A-1 is hovering somewhere in the middle overall. A-1 used to be the spot we hit after the bars for that late night slice as they were always open late. For an after bar slice you couldn't go wrong. Currently they are still open later than most of the Pizzerias in the area so they definitely earn points for that. I love this spot for some of my less traditional options, like a Buffalo chicken pie. Their Buffalo sauce is perfectly spicy! We recently order some entrees from here and were not disappointed. I got a vodka chicken parm dinner and my boyfriend got the eggplant parm. It's a few dollars more than some other spots, but the other places we called on that night were already closed. Really appreciate that these guys have been staying open! In terms of the food - portions were huge, literally got 3 meals out of my chicken parm so well worth the price. This place has changed dramatically and I suspect it was sold. The pizza, sandwiches & dinners used to be very good. Last week I ordered a cheesesteak pizza as I've done in the past but not recently. It was horrible. Cheesesteak was sparse and overcooked. There was a minimal amount of cheese and you could actually see the plain crust throughout the pie. Charged $28 for basically a crust with some scattered steak & minimal cheese. It was pitiful. In addition I was told 45 minutes and it was delivered cold in one and one-half hours . I will never order from A1 Pizza again. I don't know how they had the audacity to send out such a piece of garbage like what I received. I would give zero stars if I could!!! read more

This is the best pizza in the area, other than maybe JoJo's. I wouldn't recommend JoJo's though and you can read my review of them for why. After a couple of the best pizza places in North Arlington and Kearny closed then I needed to find a new regular spot. I tried a lot of places around the area (Lyndhurst, North Arlington, Kearny) and A-1 is the best pizza. They also will cook it well-done when requested, which a lot of the other places just don't know how to do that. Honestly its disappointing that we don't have better pizza places in the area, most of the places have gone down in quality by a lot. You have to go to Rutherford, Nutley, or possibly Belleville for better pizza. read more
