Mediocre red sauce Italian restaurant. Overpriced for what you get. Pasta on the side with that chicken parm? Sure. $10. Everything is extra except for when I asked them to go easy on the sauce and it was floating in it. Server pushing the extra cost items was only obvious after the bill came. Angelo's first and foremost is the best Italian restaurant in northern New Jersey and the red sauce is great.

I ordered shrimp and biscuit, identified as a signature dish by another guest. However, I received shrimp in sauce and sliced toasted Italian bread with red sauce. I informed the waiter that Italian bread is not a biscuit and showed him a picture of a biscuit on my phone. The restaurant may benefit from clarifying the difference between biscuits and Italian bread. The sauce was good, and the service was excellent. Although my concern was not addressed, I still enjoyed my meal, but I had expected a different experience based on the restaurant's reputation. Follow up, I amended my post because the restaurant responded to my post and said i had shrimp source not meat source. They also said biscuit in Italian is twice cooked, baked or toasted, bread, which is what they served me. What do i know? to me Italian bread is Italian bread, not a biscuit, no matter how well it is dressed up. I don't get it. I do appreciate their response to the post. read more

I love everything about this restaurant, including its cozy, comfortable Italian atmosphere. The sauce is the most authentic, homemade sauce I've ever had -- you can taste the care in it. The manicotti absolutely melts in your mouth. We started with the calamari in medium sauce, which was delicious, and the veal was cooked perfectly. The wine list is very reasonably priced, and to top it off, the bar made me a perfect Manhattan. Can't wait to come back. read more

The food wasn't bad, but the meatball appetizer came out lukewarm. The biggest shock was that no entrees come with pasta. $9 extra for pasta? I've never seen such a thing before in my life. I have to be honest, the two ladies that work there and stand at the door, I heard them making fun of my father saying how large he is and we need to find a spot where he can fit.. as they were laughing very uncalled for and just disrespectful. The fact that they thought we couldn't hear them, but we could, was even worse. I guess they shouldn't crowd the tables so closely so BIG people can sit down. My parents adored this place decades ago but when I was a little runt I was more impressed with their wine-bottles-as-candle-holders-on-every-table than the actual food. (Nowadays those little works of art are lining the walls and not each table.) Cut to more modern times and this is the second time I brought my own family here now. (The first visit was a major disappointment... note to self: don't bother with their linguine with clam sauce ever again.) Welp. I stuck with seafood once again and... it was another swing and a miss. I went with what I assume is their 'signature dish' - "Scampi, Angelo" (how odd of a name, right?) - which consists of six shrimp, three slices of lemon, in a breadcrumb-olive oil sauce (think Clams Oreganata). Over $20 for just that. The Mrs. went with their flounder-and-cherry-tomatoes. It's just that at almost $30. One kid went with their steak (just shy of $40) that not only was it incorrectly cooked (the waiter knew and took it back to give it a blast in the broiler) but way too much fat. (That came with a basic salad and some steak fries on the side.) Another kid went with their sausage-and-steak-fries dish. He was probably the only one to kinda-sorta enjoy his meal. (Oddly this was the biggest portion of food and the cheapest, clocking in at under $20.) Our waiter and the staff were like helicopter parents that never seemed to leave but they were incredibly sweet and (too) attentive. By far the most expensive restaurant in town and a huge letdown after getting that check and wondering, "For... that?!" I'm thrilled that Angelo's has been going strong since Marco Polo first met Kublai Khan and hope it's still doing it's old-school-Sunday-gravy far into the future when we've colonized Mars but... me and the rest of the family said that was our last time visiting. read more

We went expecting an old-school italian restaurant and that is just what Angelo's is. Everything was perfect. The service, the atmosphere, the food, and the wine. Everything on the menu is an italian classic-no bells or whistles- but it was all delicious. My table got a lot to share so we were able to taste a lot of the menu, and nobody was dissappointed with a single item. It is hard to find a good meatball at a restaurant, but Angelos' were perfect. And the calamari we had may have been the best. The Scampi D'Angelo was the only item on the menu that included the restaurant's name and it lived up to the title. It comes in a sizzling boat of buttery breadcrumbs that are almost addicting. It's only been a day since our visit and Inalready want to go back! Definitely worth the trip. read more

Angelo's has such a great opportunity to raise the bar a bit, menu wise. While I don't believe that restaurants should have 4,000 choices on the menu, their very small menu was surprising. For such a professional, well run restaurant like Angelo's, it's a shame their menu is so basic. And no nightly specials. Interesting. Why not? Our appetizers consisted of Shrimp Cocktail and Fried Calamari. Both were well prepared but nothing spectacular nor inventive about them or their presentation. For dinner, I had the Veal Milanese; it was very good but not much to it. Three filets of tender breaded veal on a plate. I asked where was the salad on top (my experience with milanese dishes) and I received a few minutes later a side salad that comes with other dishes. My wife's rigatoni with meat sauce (not bolognese- there's no meat in the sauce but rather the flavor of meat that's been simmering all day - ok by me and pretty old school) was just OK - nothing great. I'm surprised they don't make their own pasta here. Rigs looked like they were out of the box. Sauce was good though. Others in our party had parmigiana dishes that they enjoyed but, yeah OK, parmigiana dishes. Can't get too excited about those since they're really your basic commodity items in all NJ Italian restaurants. I will say this - fastest bar service I've ever experienced in a restaurant. It felt like we had our vodka drinks in seconds upon ordering them - and they were well made! Upon leaving Angelo's, walking past a bevy of what seemed to be regulars with a nice casual yet sophisticated vibe, I was thinking to myself this could be so much more than what's going on here today. It might be management's "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality but, geez, this old school NY vibe establishment could sure use a revamp of its menu, in my opinion. The chef must be bored out of his/her mind! Since I'm not one of the loyal patrons - who seem to be OK with this standard issue menu - can't say there's anything here that's a draw for me to return. A real sin, in my opinion, because it's a very well run restaurant (a feat in-and-of- itself these days!) and has a nice warm vibe. Angelo's is a great old school Italian restaurant. During dinner time it can get pretty crowded, leaving not much space between tables, but the food makes up for it. Menu is limited but on point with lots of authentic Italian dishes. I have seen many famous people in here over the years who keep coming back. Staff are great and interior is warm and classic throw back to a different era. They have a decent size bar area you can get a drink at while you wait for a table. In my recent visit I ordered the Eggplant part, it was done just right, marinara sauce was rich and flavorful, crisp bread, paired with terrific glass of house red wine. For desert we tried their homemade ricotta cheesecake with fresh fruits. it was delicious. No fancy wines here just adequate wines to accompany very nice dishes. Customers obviously pleased to be there. Overall, If you want that North Jersey real Italian experience, in a decor that hasn't changed since the early 70's this is the place to go. I couldn't stop eating. This is a traditional Italian restaurant- white linen tables, wine bottle wax candles, wow, brick and textured interior. Mario Lanza on the music. The prices were o think a bit higher than usual, but the food was outstanding and made it worth it. The service was extremely professional and polite. If I could eat here every day, I would, just to work my way through the menu. I had veal parmigiana, rigatoni and tartufo for dessert. The veal was pounded nicely thin. The sauce was great and the pasta was fresh. Don't be on a hurry, while the service was excellent, they take enjoyer time but that's totally fine with me. I love it. read more

Excellent old school classy Italian American. The Shrimp with Sauce and Biscuit was exceptional. The red sauce was on point, and I especially liked the spicy version with the fried calamar. The place is always packed, despite having mediocre food. It's impossible to walk in or get a reservation, so I don't know how you will get to try it yourself. It took us 4 different tries and then they were VERY clear they had another table so we had to be out before 7:30, which actually works out great for us since we are early eaters who have no desire to sit and chat. Again, this isn't a complaint from me because I want to go home after eating but if you're the group who wants that time then you can't be squeezed in. Standard NJ Italian food (which is what I call many of places in North Jersey with a bunch of parmigianas on the menu). Nothing is bad but nothing is great. The outdoor tent they did in Summer 2020 was wonderful, the inside of this place has not had a single update since 1982. You just know some people will come here every week of their life and think it's the best Italian place outside of Italy...it gives off that kind of vibe. read more

Not bad but not amazing. Prices are very high. As everyone said this is a very old school type of place. Calamari was fine. Eggplant parm was meh. Veal parm was VERY good. Pasta is extra. An old school red sauce joint that brings me back to the 70's. A great ambiance clean and well maintained. Dark wood paneling and old school elegance of the day. As good a manicotti as I've had. Really really good . Light subtle just excellent. The only issue we had was that they you two manicotti for $23 and they charged us $24 or $26 for a bowl of family style salad which was small and couldn't have been more average. Skip the garlic bread too. Disappointing. Baked clams were good. Ended the meal with a tiramisu that was made the way it's supposed to be made. Light , not on steroids, like in most Italian American joints. I still have to give the place a 4.5 and would have been a 5 if it weren't for the $26 salad and lame garlic bread. Went here last night for my fiancé's birthday. We were a party of 4 and were lucky to be sat immediately. All the food we ordered were delicious. We had the Calamari Fritti for appetizer, entrees were the Veal Parm with linguine, Spaghetti Aglio e Olio e Anchovies, Shrimp with Sauce and Biscuit, and the Linguine with White Clam Sauce. We never got the chance to tell our waiter that it was my fiancé's birthday but he was so attentive that they came out with a piece of tiramisu cake and sang happy birthday to him. For dessert, we had the tiramisu and the cannoli. Both were delicious as well. We had a great time from the atmosphere to the food and the service. There are many mixed reviews recently on the restaurant but my experience was great. Definitely recommend! read more
