I've been coming to E&V ever since I was a kid. My parents have been coming since they were kids too. E&V is on our weekly rotation of favorite restaurants. I've never had a bad meal here. My go to is the Chicken Parmigiana. It's a very generous portion and comes with a side of pasta of side salad. Most recently I had the Chicken Marsala which is also a great option. The place has not changed one bit in the 50 years it's been open. There are a few parking spots in front and a small lot on the side of the building. Prices are very reasonable considering the portion sizes. Service is usually prompt and attentive. Herman, the owner, is so kind and welcoming. E&V is a classic, must-visit Italian spot with an old-school charm. read more

My review for E&V was from 2014! It's obvious why it has stood the test of time. Established in 1967! I have family visiting from SoCal and the first thing they always want is good Italian food! Apparently it's impossible to obtain in SoCal. How sad! So naturally this was one of our stops. We started with the always delicious brushetta with filet mignon. God It's so good! They have difficulty getting good veal dishes as well so one relative had the veal scallopini. He was very, very pleased! Another had the veal parm and was also very, very happy. Ordered to-go about a month ago. Chicken parm was good however the veal parm was grizzly and my mom couldn't even eat it! She was so disappointed since we haven't had food from there is a while and it wasn't cheap. Make sure to use the side door for picking up food. We have been here several times and have even gotten catering for holidays and it was always very good. Tonight we came and ordered and it was very disappointing. The calamari and the stuffed artichoke appetizers were good, but the artichoke was in a bowl of melted butter. I asked for oil and vinegar on the side for my salad and got the mixed balsalmic anyway, but that was okay. Our entrees were very disappointing to say the least. The scallops and pasta were so salty and drenched in butter it was inedible. The broiled seafood platter was just so saturated with butter I couldn't eat this either. The waitress never came back to see if everything was okay. The busboy took our plates away and I told him how aweful the entrees were. He said he was sorry and that was it. The waitress came back eventually to see if we wanted dessert and we declined. She quickly walked away. We waited about 20 minutes or more and then finally got the check. I told the waitress who never saw the full plates we didn't eat as the busboy took them how terrible they were with all the butter and salt. She said she would let them know in the back and that was it. She walked away never to return. No trying to make it right or anything. We will not be going back and won't suggest it to others as the quality and customer satisfaction has severely declined. read more

My family and I have been enjoying E&V for 40 years. The food never disappoints. Their calamari is a huge serving of perfectly fried squid. I have never found a better version. The house salad with house dressing is excellent but getting a pasta side with their meat sauce is the pro move. The Chicken Contadina is absolutely delicious. Tender chicken in a white wine/butter sauce with potatoes, mushrooms, and onions is my go to dish. Try it and you too will be a fan. Say hi to Herman for me. read more

My friend recommended E & V so we gave it a try. We started off with the highly recommended fillet bruschetta. The steak on the bruschetta melted in your mouth. Absolutely delicious. We came here for a party and the place was dead around 6pm on a Saturday, but then quickly filled up with a lot of regulars from what we could see. The portion sizes are good and that even goes for the appetizers. The food wasn't bad, but the main dishes were a little salty for our taste buds. E & V is the best Italian restaurant ! We've been going there for many years and the food and staff are amazing !!!

***4 1/2 stars*** I love legit Italian restaurants. I love the food, I love the atmosphere, and I love that I (usually) don't have to worry about my next three meals. I hadn't been here in a couple of years, but I brought my mother and stepdad yesterday afternoon as compensation for putting a Wayfair desk together for me. (What I lack in following directions/craftsmanship I hopefully make up for in my written review contributions to society.) You can smell the history of this place in the foyer, which boasts a number of food service industry plaques going back many years, though I also noticed one for a 2023 NJ.com article (unclear if they created this themselves or if NJ.com is using their new subscriber/paywall cash flow to actually make and send these to the restaurants they write about). It's the type of restaurant boasting tablecloths and nice napkins, with the entire staff sporting nice outfits with bowties, etc. And yet...every patron sitting down is wearing track suits or something equally casual. I love a nice establishment that isn't pretentious. The restaurant is pretty small - there looked to be about 15 tables in two sections, and from prior dinner experience I know this can get pretty packed. I was famished from hiking-associated weekend adventures, so I went with a dish I've had before here and absolutely adore - the Gnocchi Sorrentino ($19). Inflation has hit Paterson, unfortunately, as this dish was closer to $14 the last time I had it. Alas. I love the Gnocchi here - solid portion with great texture and a lovely light marinara sauce. It came with rectangular shavings of parmesan, which tasted really good after it had soaked up some of the marinara sauce. Despite having half a loaf of warm bread/butter, I demolished this bad boy pretty quickly with room to spare (prompting a seasoned busboy who I'm sure has seen his share of calorie consuming to remark, 'Wow, you won't have anything to take home.') Love hiking season for this reason alone. Anyway. I wasn't done pillaging so I also had a sizeable cannoli to wrap the meal up. This is something else I've gotten here before and enjoyed, and cannolis are one of the few exceptions to my rule about disliking foods that have stuff in them, but the chilled filling is perfect and the dough had a great crisp to complement it. The service was good though it has taken a little bit of a dip since my last time. Our waitress was very nice and it didn't take too long to get anything other than maybe the introductory bread, which was about a 15-minute wait. I think part of this may be unfair, but they suffer by comparison to some truly above and beyond service I've had here where my drink was never less than half full. Here, I drank my glass of water and never got a refill (I also wasn't proactive in requesting one, so some of that is for sure on me.) One other positive though - my mother initially forgot her doggy bag at the table, and a member of the staff literally came out to the car to bring it to her. Very nice touch. Great place only a few minutes' drive from my home base. If price isn't a huge issue, I doubt you can beat this. I would also mention that this is likely the nicest section of Paterson right across the border from Totowa, so gang wars aren't a consideration either. Strong recommend. read more

I have been coming to E&V for a number of years and have always had a great meal in a nice comfortable place. I always get the E&V special with Shrimp and mushrooms on pappardelle pasta. It is always consistently delicious. The portion is very large and I always need to bring home half. I am compelled to write a review now because I am having my leftovers for lunch the next day. Their prices are so reasonable. Their dishes prices are on the lower side compared to other local Italian eateries. Their wine and beer prices are also very low. The service is impeccable and very professional. They are attentive and pleasant and make sure that you are properly served. I absolutely love this place. read more

Heard about this old time Italian Restaurant for years. Somewhat disappointed though. Way to casually dressed for me. Sweats, hoodies, sweatshirts, and baseball caps. Awesome little place we stumbled upon after a funeral. Not familiar with the area but good ole Yelp came through again. Easy parking, welcoming hostess (her name is Crystal) and really great food! Shrimp scampi was the best I've had, and the wife got some kind of chicken with vegetables- really really good. We started with cheesy garlic bread, and scarfed it down. I'm gonna dream about that tonight! Nice atmosphere (Maybe a place Tony Soprano would eat at!). Good looking and friendly staff. Highly recommend! read more

Absolutely delicious classic Italian. A hidden gem that deserves a visit! The service was fantastic and the waiter, Germán, was so attentive and kind. Ambiance was cozy and inviting. Highly recommend to anyone in northern New Jersey it reminds me of home and my grandma's cooking. We split the arugula and seafood salads, absolutely scrumptious, fresh, and hearty, as well as the escarole and beans and the cavatelli and broccoli. I've been periodically patronizing this restaurant since I was a kid; never with my parents, who tended to look down their nose at the dining options in Paterson, and the city of Paterson in general (my adoptive mother was a smart, good-hearted person, and she loved my oldest friend, who was born in Paterson to Italian-American parents, but she had absorbed some of the bigotries of her era and could be harshly judgmental, although it's sometimes funny in retrospect when I think about it; like...when I would become excited as a kid and start waving my hands around in order to express myself, she'd say, "Stop talking with your hands; do you want people to think you're from Paterson?" or, when a commercial played on the TV for Thomas's English Muffins, a local company, and a kid would say in a fast-paced, squeaky voice, "The muffins have nooks and crannies!", my mother would remark, "Is that kid from Paterson?" This despite the fact that she had grown up in Depression-Era Jersey City, a hard place to grow up under the best of circumstances. Anyway...). It was always with my oldest friend and his parents, who were from Paterson (my friend's father used to run 3 bars there, and knew people as disparate as Lou Costello, Willie Moretti, and Joe Pistone). However, E&V seemed to be going downhill in recent years, and the last time we ate there...my oldest friend and me...it seemed downright mediocre. That was maybe 10 years ago. The other night, my friend was in town, and we were looking for a place to eat, when he suggested E&V. Since he invariably picks up the tab (I stopped arguing against this unwarranted generosity a long, long time ago, and on this particular occasion, my friend used the excuse that he was paying me back for some books I had ordered for him on Amazon), I agreed. I used to know Paterson pretty well, and was always fascinated by it (when I worked in Ft. Lee, I used to drive home through it at midnight; just recently, I dined with my genetic paternal aunt, who teaches at a school in Paterson, and when I told her about these late night drives, she looked at me pointedly and said, "And you didn't get stopped? A white guy driving through Paterson at midnight is there to buy drugs." I still don't know if she believes I had no ulterior motive for my nocturnal drive-throughs). It's been a long time, though, and I was lost as my friend maneuvered his way around the darkened streets. E&V is in an innocuous appearing storefront, and I belatedly recognized it as we pulled into the parking lot (as an aside, parking doesn't seem to be a problem at E&V). Inside, it was packed, with only 2 servers working very hard. One was a younger guy, and English obviously wasn't his 1st language. The other was an older gentleman, who recognized my friend. We were served bread and butter, and my friend ordered a Caesar Salad and Clams Oreganata, which we split. Maybe I was hungrier than I thought, but it all tasted very good. My friend wanted a glass of wine, and waited for someone to take his wine order, and waited...and waited...and waited. It became a joke between us, but we weren't in any particular hurry, catching up with each other about what was going on in our lives, reminiscing about old times, etc. I can't remember what my friend ordered (a pasta in a sauce of some kind), but I had the chicken parmigiana and spaghetti, which is what I ordered the last time I was here and had been sorely disappointed with. Now? It was good. Very good. And it was a substantial portion. I wolfed it down with alacrity. And my friend finally did get his glass of wine. It's a standing joke between us that I'm never able to remember whether it's spumoni I love or tortoni (which goes back to those ancient days when my friend and I backpacked across Europe and spent a lot of time in Italy). It must be some psychic block on my part, or maybe just plain stupidity. In any event, I ordered wrong again, I guess, or the younger server didn't understand me, because I was served the wrong dessert. He took it back (and visibly wasn't happy about it), but, ultimately, I was served the tortoni (almond ice cream in a paper cup with a cherry on top) I had requested. And, as expected, I loved it. Hopefully, in my old age, I'll finally be able to remember what it's called (Tortoni! Tortoni! Tortoni...!!!...). A group of young Irishmen were sitting at a table nearby, unwinding after a day of work, and my friend started a conversation with them, relating that he had lived in Dublin for 3 years. (I'll give their company a plug; Provision Paving & Masonry--- haven't availed myself of their services, but they seemed like hard-working, dedicated guys and they do a lot of work in Paterson, so they must be doing something right). Overall? A good, hearty meal in a venerable local institution. Sort of like going back home, even if the last time I called Passaic County home was decades ago. But they do need to hire some more servers. Recommended. read more

The food is always top notch here and the service is great. Had a party for 18 people and everyone enjoyed eating family style. Plenty of food to go around. We had cold antipasto, mozz and tomatoes, baked clams, calamari and mussels as appetizers. Dinner was chicken marsala, veal parm, broiled filet and penne with 2 different sauces. Luckily I left room for chocolate cake and cannoli which were amazing. Herman makes sure everyone is happy and is very pleasant to deal with. read more

Beware!! last two times we were at E & V, each item on our bill was $1-3 more than listed on the menu. When I questioned the owner, he said it was tax! I said you charge me tax on the total, so it cannot be tax unless you are charging me tax twice! I doubt patrons notice the switch because it is small but seems to be the new norm. we won't be going back! if prices changed, then the menu should reflect the changes and then it is up to me to decide if the price is what I want to spend. I do not appreciate the sneaky way the owner is adding to his prices. read more

Went here for the first time for Mother's Day this year and loved it! It was my sister's birthday and I wanted to surprise her with a dinner with family. They had 2 big groups during our visit, us being one of them. There were only 2 servers due to being short staffed. We had a bit of a wait for things but it was great. We were able to chat and digest our food and not have everything crammed all at once, appetizers, entree etc. Wait staff did a great job making sure appetizers came out at the temperature they are supposed to be and that entrees were all delivered at the same time and hot! I've been to restaurants with more staff that didn't do as great as these 2 did! This place serves authentic Italian food! It is delicious! Filet Mignon Bruschetta as appetizer is soooooo good! Calamari is very good and clams oreganata were delicious! I had the baked ziti which is made with ricotta cheese (my fave) and mozzarella! The sauce is not like your regular red sauce, it's creamier. Very tasty! Large portion! For dessert I had the Italian Cheesecake which is yummo! I love Italian Cheesecake snd not many places have it! Absolutely delicious! A Paterson classic. This place hands down has some of the best Italian food around. The prices are a little high but you get what you pay for. The portions are large and its absolutely delicious. I have gotten a few different dishes from here but last time i got the Chicken Parm (~$21) it had 6 pieces of chicken i believe and it comes with whatever pasta you'd like. It was MORE then enough food. Big fan of this place - the food speaks for itself. This place is well worthy of its good reviews. read more

We had the fried calamari and it was extremely tender with a wonderful accompanying sauce. Followed by Soft Shell Crabs for the Mrs. (She could only eat one of the two served; too much calamari). I had the Shrimp Arrubiata over Capellini. A delicious lightly spiced cream sauce. Wonderful!! We haven't been back in approximately 6 years.
