John is an exceptional professional and absolutely wonderful human being. He will take care of you and he will take care of the animals. If you care about welfare and safety of the animals, John is the only professional you should trust with your case. I live far from New York City in a mountainous and wooded area, you could say I live in the woods. It is an area with a very high animal activity. Raccoons, opossum, skunks, groundhogs, foxes all roam freely here and they are here in abundance. I have a house that use to be a cabin and while half of it now has a basement the other half barely has a crawl space underneath. I had an issue under that half of the house. Many creatures have gotten under my deck and eventually into the crawl space. There was a family of skunks living there as well as a family of groundhogs, with other creatures visiting on and off. I was particularly worried about groundhogs because of their borrowing. Eventually constant digging that groundhogs do could bring a structure down. John has devised a plan on how to exclude the creatures and to protect my property from creatures getting back inside. John has also executed the plan successfully. My crawlspace is now free from its permanent residents and from unwanted visitors. Another important detail about my case is the fact that it started late fall and groundhogs tend to go into hibernation during winter. By the time John has secure the deck and the crawlspace under the house we were not sure if the groundhog(s) were still underneath and went into winter sleep. John agreed to leave the excluders over winter and come back in spring to conclude the job. Also refused to be paid in full before the job is complete. Remarkably the groundhog came out in March, it was sleeping all through the winter. One very important thing to know about the initial quote you get from John and the total price you will pay. While there will always, always, absolutely always be some other place, some other guy who will give you a lower estimate, John will be the right choice if you want the job done right. Mine was a large job and the cost was several thousand dollars and I am extremely happy I decided to agree to Johns plan and approach. After purchasing our home in Stamford in April we awoke one morning to a growing damp spot in the ceiling above our bed. We called a roofer who promptly came out and noticed nothing wrong with our roof. He did some calking and had us wait until the next storm... Time would tell us that this spot had nothing to do with water and everything to do with URINE! Upon entering our attic we were confronted with musk and piles of droppings. It was horrific. I searched and searched yelp for someone who would complete an eviction of the animals, exclusion of the openings (in our case the louvers of the attic fan) and, most importantly, thorough and professional abatement of the droppings which, in our case, were from raccoons which apparently can harbor a toxic spore. This fall squirrels suddenly moved into my roof. I called Trapper John, and he came the next day. After checking out the situation, he closed off their access holes. With one entrance allowing the squirrels to leave but not come back in. A week latter after we were squirrel free he came back and closed the hole. No squirrels were injured or exterminated. I saw a squirrel disappear into my roof a few days ago & called Trapper John right away. He explained the possible options & scheduled a visit soon afterwards. If I could give him 10 stars I would!!! It turned out that there were 5 Baby squirrels in my roof & what happened after that was just fascinating!!! John placed 1 baby squirrel on the ground & told me to wait. Within seconds Mama squirrel was on the scene!!! She was in full protection mode! I watched as John systematically placed each baby on the ground while communicating & fighting with Mama squirrel. It was s BATTLE!!!! She wanted to get back into my house by any means or direction necessary!!! I only wish I'd caught it on video! We watched as she took each baby to another location. When she was done, she stood on another roof & complained! Another Mama squirrel even came running to her defense! Trapper John, a true New York hero! We had a squirrel in our living room (somehow it snuck in by lifting up the bug net in the window) and we struggled to catch it for a few hours, until we called Trapper John. He offered to come and help us, but first suggested we save the money and just let him guide us through the art of catching a squirrel, and then throwing the squirrel out of the window (we made it clear we didn't want any bloodshed.) With Trapper John on speaker phone, he gave us masterful advice on how to treat the squirrel. Basically, it should not be confused with a raccoon or a rat, but rather it should be treated like a vaguely annoying pet, more like a kitten than a rodent. He told me to basically just grab hold of it and gently place it outdoors. I was surprised that the squirrel didn't freak out when I got hold of it, and I was also surprised that the body of the little creature felt so firm. I was expecting it to be all fluffy fur, but apart from the tail, this was a very compact little dude. Trapper John also advised me not to try to grab its tail, as it would just fall right off (This was true; I tried this at first, before I talked to Trapper John, and a small part of the tail just fell off. Sorry, Mr Squirrel.) Anyway, eventually I got a good grip of Mr. Squirrel, and was able to gently place it at the windowsill, where I let it go, so that it could once again find freedom, and possibly another Brooklyn brownstone to gently terrorize. Without the help of Trapper John, Mr. Squirrel would probably still be stuck behind our bookshelf, looking terrified while pooping on our first editions of Julio Cortázar's Hopscotch. So, the TL;DR version of this is that Trapper John is a true master of what he does, and he should win some kind of award for his public service to this city. I've had squirrels in my attic for at least a year, due to the poor job the roofer did when he replaced my roof and left an opening. I tried to evict them myself, using strobe lights, mothballs, barking alarms; nothing worked. I had cameras in the crawl spaces and I could see them just ignoring all of that. That's when I called Trapper John. On the phone, he patiently explained what he does, what kind of problem I might have and what can be expected of his work. He made sure I knew that he is an animal advocate and doesn't intend to kill them. He came within a couple of days and after getting up on the roof and looking in the crawl spaces, he told me what he could do and what my options were regarding how extensive I wanted him do the work which had different warranty options. I agreed to let him do the work and he started right away. After about another hour, he was mostly done as it was dark and said he would return in 5 days. Well, my cameras didn't see anything anymore and I even watched the next day as I saw a squirrel try to get thru the trap door he set by the entrance. I called Trapper John (John) upon the advice of the pest control company I consulted regarding the critters in my walls, and I'm glad I did! They suggested I make sure it wasn't a squirrel issue before I spent money on rat/mice extermination. Luckily, John happened to have a free slot same day to come check things out. He took the time and asked a lot of questions on the phone to get a good idea of the sounds and symptoms we were experiencing and where it was happening in the house. I could tell from the thoughtful questions he asked that he knows what he is talking about! When he arrived, he went up to the roof and looked it over thoroughly (even finding a few issues I will have to call my roofer about). Since we didn't find any points of entry there, we came down to inspect the back yard and interior of the house. He was able to access inside the walls via some vents I have. Voila! We found some mouse droppings and he said he was pretty certain it wasn't squirrels but mice. He spent about almost an hour here going over everything extensively and was really thorough. Verdict? No squirrels! He gave me good and honest advice about selecting a Pest Control company (before becoming a squirrel specialist he worked in the pest control industry) and said to make sure they give you safety data on the chemicals they use (I have cats) in case of accidental ingestion. He explained how they should apply chemicals for maximum safety and efficacy. While I'm happy we don't have squirrels, if I did, I would definitely give Trapper John my business. He was totally professional, honest, and thorough. I liked how he cared about my situation even though it might not be a job for him - he isn't out to make a quick buck, he really cares about his business and his clients (potential or actual). First off, I have not yet hired Trapper John. But that's the reason for this positive review. I called him about a particular pigeon-problem that I have (nesting in a gutter, which seems to be an issue plaguing many houses in my neighborhood) and instead of immediately saying he'd come over and charge me, John actually took the time to talk through the situation, asking about multiple details, and telling me what solutions could be possible but, because of various factors affecting the homes in my area, might ultimately cause more damage to them (the gutters, specifically) or might not work because he had no long-term evidence about these other potential solutions. I'm still mulling over my next step -- if there is one -- but John's patient, knowledgeable advice and the fact that he didn't jump to quick conclusions or immediately want to bill me for work that might not, in the end, have satisfying results, makes me believe he's THE person to call for wildlife control in NYC, and I'll definitely do so again if I (unfortunately) have any future problems. read more
