I've been in this complex hundreds of times and never noticed this spot. It's located next to Starbucks. Plenty of parking. It has that old school diner vibe. Decor hasn't changed since the 70's but they do have a cc machine. I got the lunch special, split pea soup and grilled cheese for $5.95. Not bad. The soup was amazing and of course the grilled cheese was grilled to perfection. There menu is very reasonable and they had plenty of customers, however, there is only one waitress so the wait to get our check was a lil long but not horrible. read more

Train Diner has been in this strip mall location forever. I remember passing by it when I was a kid while driving through West Caldwell. A couple of years ago, I went inside for the first time with my friend who works in the area. Nothing fancy, kind of small, but it's got old school charm and personality. More importantly, you can get a solid breakfast here for a good price. read more

New diner is called Alya's Diner and it was really great! Coffee was good, it was nice sitting at the counter, and the workers were very friendly and attentive. The food came fast and it's a nice classic diner environment. I enjoyed my breakfast and felt it was pretty reasonably priced for the quality. Train diner was great, this is now Alya's Diner and it's not good. Terrible service. The staff was unable to handle a moderately busy establishment on a Saturday. Ordered items that never came but were on the bill that we had to have removed, couldn't get the waitress' attention once just to get silverware and napkins. With so many other extremely well run diners in the area with superior food, West Essex, Caldwell, Chit Chat, Montville, etc, I will never step foot in this place again. read more

It took numerous phone calls and on one of those calls a waitress said, "This has happened 3 times in the past"... HMMMM. When I finally did get a message from the owner he did not indicate how he was going to solve the issue. I had to track him down again and he cavalierly said, "Well you have to call your bank and dispute it and they will stop it in the system"... This is an outdated very charming diner. My friend and I happened upon it and it's become a favorite spot. Although it's not fancy and updated it lives up to the expectations of a diner in New Jersey. The coffee is great and hot the food is great and reasonably priced. We were visiting from out of town and looking for a diner on our drive home. This came up highly rated so we gave it a try. All our food was really good. Very typical diner stuff so nothing was out of the ordinary. My 7 year old had the French toast and he ate every bite of his and some of mine (it's usually a fight to get him to eat). I had the eggs, toast, and sausage. The sausage was really good. It wasn't the typical frozen type we usually see at a lot of diners. I also had a bagel with cream cheese which was really good and fresh. My husband had the steak and eggs and a short stack. He said it was really good. Our waitress was very very sweet and help. She brought crayons for our kids and chatted with us. Great little spot. Felt very comfortable and familiar. I wish Yelp had half stars because I would def give it a 4.5. It had nothing spectacular but everything was well done, familiar, and friendly. Would def come back again. read more

I stopped there for breakfast with my wife. We both had eggs, with potatoes, toast and coffee. It was good, on the average. The service wasn't great but I don't usually like to give reviews on that if the food is over the top. My bill came to $22.00 and I felt that was high but they added a $1.00 on if you use a credit card. I had put cash on the table for a tip but when my waitress handed me my receipt back she added a 20% tip on for herself! I thought I was supposed to determine that. I was giving her more, oh well! Great diner. Cozy, small, waiters have been working here for years and I've been eating here regularly for the last 20 years. No exaggeration. Breakfast is great and they have great coffee too, but the omelets and egg dishes are good for lunch or dinner. Pancakes, especially the chocolate chip is another family favorite. French fries also well done, crispy and crunchy. Delicious. But no review of the train would be complete without mention of the soups and salad. My favorite soup is the green pea, but it's not served every day, so just be aware. The two best salads are the Greek... Now you can add chicken and I get it with no dressing, it's that good. And the stuffed grape leaves that come with the salad are excellent. The other salad that is amazing is the Laurie and Cindy. This is actually named after two friends of mine, Laurie and Cindy who used to order it all the time and then they just added it to the menu. It's grilled chicken and roasted peppers and a bunch of other things... Must try. Enjoy! This place is a true fav of mine and most people I know that live locally! read more

I had lunch at the Train Diner today for the first time in about 25 years! Remarkably, I don't think the place changed at all! The diner has the feel of a small town place which I love. I sat at the counter and really enjoyed the place. I loved seeing the old milkshake maker behind the counter! I went with a cheeseburger deluxe and thought it was fine. Service is bad! True I am not an American so I am not familiar with menu at a diner. But the lady, tall with glasses, didn't offer any help, and is very impatient while I told her I wanted a bite for breakfast, rolled her eyes and said to another lady that she doesn't understand my language and walked away. Like her job has nothing to do with introducing food or make recommendations, just to write down what you need from the menu. The food was bad too, $8 for 2 pieces of bread with some tuna. My favorite diner in the area. It's your typical NJ diner but the service is impeccably fast and everything always comes out tasting fresh. While the Train Diner is a wonderful little restaurant for breakfast, am forced to give it three stars because of the rude and careless attitude of waitress Ellen. We have always been happy with this restaurant, and our loyalty goes back at least 25 years, but Ellen is the worst server ever! Their food is amazing, being both plentiful and delicious. What a shame that one person can affect a restaurant experience so dramatically. I would recommend going to the Train, but definitely do not recommend Ellen! read more

Pretty basic run-of-the-mill no frills Jersey diner. The decor is pretty old. The menu is pretty standard with just about what you'd expect to find. I'm still scratching my head as to why there were olives in my Cobb salad... The server was not rude, but not exactly warm either. She was just fine. The fries were certainly the highlight. Crisp and well done. The price point is about right for what they're doing here. If I lived or worked close by, I could see stopping in for the occasional lunch or dinner. I'd sooner wait the extra time at the nearby pancake house for breakfast. This is not a destination diner. Just good enough for the local area, but I'm in no rush to return. As a positive, while the restaurant definitely needs a facelift, it appeared very clean--especially the kitchen which is open and visible to the restaurant. Parking is ample as well. read more

The Train Diner is hands down one of my favorite diners in all of New Jersey. It is a classic New Jersey diner and it has been one of my favorite places to come to eat ever since I was a little girl. You can come to the Train at anytime of the day and have a great meal. Personally, I love the Lori and Cindy salad, the split pea soup, the veggie burger, the French fries, and the poaches eggs with a side of bacon the most!!!! Even though I listed my favorites, basically everything here is super yummy. So you can order anything off the menu and have a great meal. Since I have been coming here my whole life, I feel like home when I am here. All of the employees are super nice, friendly, and have been working here forever. Flew up from Florida to visit with family and attend the funeral of a close friend. Whenever we come back to NJ, we make sure to go to the Train Restaurant. Once you enter this well known local eatery, you are immediately impressed with the cleanliness. The food is both plentiful and delicious. Normally the service is as great as the food. Today, however, we were UNFORTUNATE enough to have Ellen as our waitress. She was rude and inattentive. Don't under any circumstances let this waitress take care of you. Wait for a table in someone else's section. What would've been 5 stars has been lowered due to the attitude of this person. read more
