Trace is tucked behind the hotel bar and has a dramatic, if expected, contemporary design. Everyone in our group agreed that the food was delicious. And this is no small feat as we have so many picky and specific types in our group. Downside: service. Timing was way off. Some appetizers didn't arrive at the same time. Entrees bumped up against appetizers. Water glasses remained empty until several asks for more. Wine refills completely forgotten until the food was almost finished. This was, perhaps, because it was a holiday evening. However, no one took the time to explain or apologize for the subpar service. Rating would be higher if based on food alone. I would say definitely give it a chance but if service is poor again then Yelp it up! read more

This isn't the first time I've come here, which wasn't a good experience, but before writing a review I decided to give them a second chance. We had a fairly sizable group, walked in, and went straight to the bar. We were told we would only get served if we find a place to sit. After finding a table and waiting 20 minutes, we walked up to the bar asking about getting an order in and they apologized and said someone would be over right away. 10 minutes go by and someone finally came over. No smile, no "how are you", no apology. All she said were two words: "drinks?" and "credit card" in a super irritated rude tone. We received our drinks, which could be mistaken for juice and not even full, and had no one come back to check on us. Once again we had to get up and ask for the check. Never again. read more

I would give Trace zero stars if I could. My wife and I stayed at the W Hotel for a work event. She said the catered lunch from Trace was good, so we decided to go there for breakfast before heading to the airport to catch our plane home. We went on a Saturday morning around 9am and it was pretty empty. The waitress took our food and drink order. The coffee was only lukewarm, but I needed the caffeine. About 30 minutes pass and she comes back and said that she forgot to put our order in! We were both pretty stunned and she said sorry and handed my wife the menu. Apparently she didn't write it down because she thought we needed to see the menu again. She said she got slammed with a large table in front of us. We both looked around because there was only four or five other tables at the time. We had left enough time for a relaxing breakfast before going to the airport, but now we were cutting it close so we decided to leave. Now, you know when someone says sorry, but they don't sound sorry at all? That was the waitress. She said the word sorry, but the tone she used said she was annoyed that we were upset. Somehow it gets even worse. After the waitress said "sorry (but not really)", my wife responded saying, "This is terrible!". The waitress decided to respond saying that she made a mistake, "but there are plenty of things in life that are much worse." I've never had someone that works in a service job talk back to me like that. It felt like we were on a hidden camera show. It was really bizarre. Love this place!! I've been here several times, and the drinks, food, and service is amazing!! I was there today and just had a couple drinks and an appetizer. The bartender was so friendly and personable, and then I met the Manager, who was equally friendly and charming. They both made me feel like a 'regular' even though I've only been a few times. Trace is a few blocks from my work. The A-frame sign outside, from my perspective, is a little tacky and not aligned with the vibe they're going for, but that's just me. Stepping inside is a bit breathtaking. As you come through the revolving door, you are situated directly in front of a lounge area with a fireplace. Ooooh...ahhhh. As my friend and I veered to the right, we were greeted by a man that was very polite. As he took us to be seated, he kindly pointed out the step so that we wouldn't trip, and pulled chairs out for us. Nice. We were seated at a high table for two at lunch. I don't know how everyone feels about those tables but I'm short. I have a hard time with them. The space itself is beautiful. The lighting, design, and decor is top notch. The bar is very sophisticated but has a bit of character, like a few rubber ducks (which I presume were bottle tops), that made me smile. Our server was excellent. She was efficient and polite. She took time at the beginning to explain what Trace meant. It seems like a little thing but I appreciated it. She also gave us a choice of three different kinds of water. A bit pretentious, but still thoughtful. One of the reasons I go to places during Restaurant Week is to see if I would pay full price for their food, whether it's lunch or dinner. I didn't go to Trace until now because frankly, I was a little averse from the previous restaurant that was there. My friend and I made different selections off the Restaurant Week menu and shared the food. Between the two of us, we had the following: - Crispy egg, grilled asparagus, foraged mushrooms (appetizer) - Saimin noodles, pork miso broth, and chili oil (appetizer) - Duck confit flatbread, Rogue blue cheese, arugula (entree) - Sushi roll (4pcs), Trace roll with seaweed salad (entree) - Warm huckleberry cobbler, vanilla gelato (dessert) - Theo chocolate cake (dessert) The appetizers were okay; I liked the crispy egg more than the saimin noodles. The saimin noodles were overcooked and despite chili oil, the broth was underseasoned. The entrees were a toss up. The duck confit flatbread was fantastic! I could eat those all day. The Trace roll was a huge disappointment. You would think that a signature dish would be the best. I eat sushi a lot. This did not taste like it was rolled for me. It tasted like it had been rolled ahead of time and had been sitting around. The rolls were a slight bit chilled, almost as if they had been sitting in the fridge, but not so much that the rice was hard. The best thing about the sushi was the high quality wasabi that was served with it. Dessert stole the show, as it often does for me during Restaurant Week. Although the portions looked small, they were decadent. The huckleberry cobbler was served in a small, cast iron dish. The vanilla gelato really set off the flavors in the cobbler and the proportions were spot on. The chocolate cake was dreamy. Not only was the cake fantastic but the presentation was beautiful. I think Trace is worth another try but I'm concerned about the lack of consistency in the quality of the food. Clearly, they have desserts down but I rarely partake in such things anymore, except special occasions. If you take dessert off the table, really, one dish was at the quality that I would pay their price point. In such a competitive area, I'm hoping my next experience with Trace will prove to be a more positive one. read more

If there were an option to select 4 1/2 stars , I certainly would! The W Seattle has taken another step in reinforcing their fearless approach to cutting edge interior design in support of their ever-evolving brand. It was refreshing to see a Seattle hotel push back against standard expectations in what a Seattle hotel "should" look like. The new lobby completely surprises with their take on an Aviation/Lodge feel - and whoever had the cajones to marry orange, hot pink, neutrals and metals together gets a big thumbs up from me. Lot's of soft seating, interesting decor and places for gathering put this space on my list of "top places to meet". The concept of TRACE - literally being able to trace the food back to the local farm - is right on trend and appropriate when other hotel restaurants have not embraced the need to have more interesting and healthier options on the menu. The oysters, sushi rolls, Hummus w/soy beans and eggplant were all top notch. We drank Rombauer chardonnay which was a little pricier per glass than in other places, but not terribly so. I am taking clients back to dinner within the next week and am excited to experience more of the menu. I'm glad to see other positive reviews. On my last visit, I was stopping in for a bite and a beer before having to be elsewhere in about 25 minutes. I sat at the bar and the server took my order fairly quickly, and had no problem bringing my check early so I could duck out as soon as I was done. I ordered the happy hour fries and they were absolutely delicious! Awesome size for happy hour and the fries were crispy but not overdone, with a generous helping of cheese on top. After coming in late into Seattle, we were hungry! Thank goodness for Trace being located right downstairs of the W Seattle. Honestly, I'm only going to talk about one the thing and that would be the Lemon Grass Chicken wings. These wings were such a huge surprise. Super crispy, flavorful, and filling. It really reminded me of salt and pepper pork chops, but 10x better. I loved the bold flavor of lemongrass infused with the wings. Excellent twist to such a classic flavor. The sauce on the bottom of plate was also a great addition of flavor, not sure if it was just soy sauce or not. Gosh, I seriously crave those wings OFTEN! The only downside is that it is a bit inconsistent. Eating at the bar, the wings were large, but ordering to go the next day, the wings were half the size. Friday night dInner review: Decent food. Came here a week ago (July 1st) for a (4-year overdue) ladies night out where all us mommies decided in advance to book a room in the W hotel together and stay close for dinner so we could maximize prepping and prefunc'ing in the room! Our dinner reservation (which was completely and totally unnecessary) was for 8:30pm and the dining room was a wasteland at that time. Just a couple of occupied tables with families and a handful of patrons in the bar area. I ordered the spiced chicken tacos ($12) and lavender longpour cocktail ($13). Both yum! I think the trick with this place is to come later on weekend nights and rock out here where they have a DJ and dancing. When we traipsed in after midnight after dragging our old lady asses home from a couple of dance clubs, this joint was popping. Its was all a slightly older/ more dressed up (& coupled up) crowd (like, ahem, ourselves... rapidly approaching FORTY, yikes!) but who were loving the music and the loungy club feel. Next time we have a girls night I plan on staying here! But alas, bed upstairs called so I only got a few minutes to look around before ... YAWN!... You enter the restaurant through an upscale busy bar. The bar was teeming with people chatting, enjoying themselves. To get to the restaurant, you go through the bar. It's like crossing a divide into a barren wasteland. Their website describes the place as a fresh, contemporary urban dinging experience. It looks like an effort was made to give the area a contemporary look, however in my opinion it has achieved the look of one of the cheaper cruise lines. The restaurant was completely empty when we arrived at 7pm on a Saturday. The entire time I was there only one other couple came in to dine. The menu selection is very limited. Nevertheless, for an appetizer we had the soy bean hummus. This tasted okay but did nothing to whet your appetite. There were only six entrees to choose from with one being a hamburger. I chose the Pipikaula Skirt Steak grilled Caesar Salad with a side of hand-cut fries. The steak was chewy and the salad was dry. The highlight of the meal was the fries. They were prepared well and had a unique, tasty flavor. Generally I order dessert. Considering the rather tasteless meal we had, we decided to go elsewhere. I came here last night for dinner after checking into my room and sat in the dining room (all alone, so sads). I ordered a glass of the Pinot wine, the warm beet and arugula salad, and an avocado roll. The wine came immediately and the food came fairly fast! The salad was amazing- I really liked the light dressing, the goat cheese, and the crispy onions on top. After I was done with that I was definitely ready for some more! There was also some red and green powdery stuff on the side of the bowl which I tried and which tasted good too. My avocado roll was delicious as well. In the middle of my dinner I realized it wouldn't be enough food, so I added a cucumber roll, which came fairly fast. I did prefer the avocado roll to the cucumber roll, but both were really good overall. I also thought that they were extremely reasonably priced at $5 for each roll. Would I come back? Yes!! So this might be the weirdest, or least generally useful review of Trace, but here it comes from the perspective of a dad on spring break with 2 kids for a weekend. We stayed 2 nights at the W, so Trace served us 2 breakfasts, 1 dinner, and 1 cocktail hour. Food is Asian-Northwest fusion, prepared by masters back in the kitchen and at the sushi bar. The food is all first class gourmet fare. We customized and/or ordered off the menu for every meal and they did a great job. My kids weren't the only ones in the place, but don't bring yours if they won't behave like adults. They wouldn't be welcome. The waiter we had for dinner seemed new, and a tiny bit disorganized. (thus the 4 stars, not 5). The service at the bar for cocktails was just fine, and the bartenders know their stuff. The atmosphere is a really cool vibe without annoying music or televisions, so you can hold a conversation. Dress is biz casual or club wear for most patrons( at least to fit in). I got a few looks when I showed up with the kids, but their behavior won them good marks in the eye of the staff I think. The decor is fantastic. If a full meal is not your intent, Trace would be a great place for happy hour during the week, or cocktails prior to an event on the weekend. The appetizers are great, and their signature cocktails look good. I only sampled 2, but most of the others looked good. I would purposefully make this place a destination next time I'm in town. Trace is the main restaurant attached to The W Hotel. During our stay at the hotel, we ate there for dinner and breakfast. The decor is modern to say the least. Add the lounge music, you feel like you are somewhere very trendy. You'll learn to enjoy the atmosphere because service is slow. I do not know if they are understaffed or if we had to share the kitchen with room service, but our dinner seating lasted 2 hours and breakfast 1 hour. Despite that, both our servers were professional, pleasant and checked on us several times. The wait was easily forgotten once the food arrived. The dishes were beautifully presented, and the food tasted even better. We had sushi for dinner, and the fish was very fresh. We would recommend the Emerald City and Northwest rolls. If you are sensitive to spicy like me, you can ask for the sauce on the side. Breakfast was my favorite. I had the Seattle Trace breakfast with salmon lox and eggs. Again, the food tasted very fresh. My husband had the American meal which included sausage from a local company. If you are a foodie and are willing to enjoy a long relaxing meal, then Trace is for you. read more

Trace more like Trendy. Trace is a very modern looking bar. Very relaxful place to sit and have a drink. The bar menu is a bit pricey but I did really enjoy the garlic fries. They were very crispy and the garlic was not overpowering. If you're near the area and have some time to kill it's definitely worth it just to relax at the bar. read more

The food was surprisingly good. The service is not as great in the holistic sense. I've had 3 meals there (breakfast and dinner) but they seem to be short-staffed. The server themselves have been friendly and knowledgeable, however it looked as though they were preoccupied with hundreds of other things, especially at dinner time! I can honestly say that my dinner server was a great guy but i saw him running around the whole ground floor serving multiple areas, busing his own tables, running his own tables, etc. This made it difficult to find him when I needed him. So the fourth star is held back because the restaurant management needs to get their sh*t together and hire more help, especially at dinner. Until then, I would suggest that you sit next to the bar as there are more staff in that section during dinner time rather than the dining hall. You'll notice the dining hall is dead, and for good reason. Service is hard to come by. read more

Trace juxtaposes a great concept involving fresh, locally-sourced ingredients with a modern, lounge vibe. In terms of ambiance, this is the kind of place you should go with a group of friends to get tipsy on drinks and have dinner, but not a place where you plan to have a nice long meal with a reflective conversation. Although I usually prefer to do the latter, I did like the modern decor. The tables have that great lacquer on top - and the seats were comfortable and an attractive butter yellow. I like the aesthetic of the sushi bar with a peek into the kitchen, and the impressive entrance through the W Hotel with the huge fireplace and lounge chairs. The food was overall fantastic. I don't mind the sushi mixed with American dishes. It's Seattle, so you should expect Asian fusion, or Asian plus American as the case may be. The Trace roll was delicious and as good as anything at Umi or Wasabi Bistro. The steak was perfectly cooked with an amazingly buttery mushroom sauce that I could have eaten on its own. I ordered the king crab pappardelle - the pasta was freshly made and tasted like it, the sauce was light and buttery, and the crab was incredibly fresh. A few gripes: the crab was so fresh that there were shells in it that I had to pick out. I wasn't sure if it was just a sloppy crab-meat-pulling job, or they were trying to make sure you knew it was real crab ... either way I could have done without the shells. Also, the short-rib lettuce wraps were tasty, but the lettuce was too small for the ingredients. We made a huge mess eating it. I needed wet wipes afterwards. For dessert we tried the Meyer lemon and olive oil cake with cardamom gelato. Very good - more of a palate cleanser than a dessert, given the portion size and the tartness of the lemon - but beautifully presented and tasty. If it weren't for the crab shells, the messy lettuce wraps, and the competent but mediocre service, I would have given this place five stars. But it's pretty darn close. read more

I met up with some of my former classmates at Trace on a Friday night for drinks and some bites. Located in the W Seattle hotel, Trace has a super swanky feel when you first walk in. At the entrance you are greeted by a huge tree-like structure covered in shiny steel plates and a large curved fireplace flanked by leather banquettes, funky chairs and stools where you can lounge and have cocktails on teeny, tiny tables. We thought it would be fun to sit in that area but the place was already pretty packed by 5:00 so we ended up snagging a table near the bar from some ladies who happened to be getting up at the right moment. The waitress greeted us right away and took our drink orders, but unfortunately the service really seemed to go downhill from there. However, when we finally did receive our appetizers they were absolutely delicious, which made up for the lackluster waitstaff. Happy hour is daily from 4 to 7 and includes $4 draft beers, $5 bites, $6 house wines and $7 well drinks. We ordered an assortment of drinks and appetizers and were pleasantly surprised. The handcut fries come covered with beecher's flagship cheddar and garlic aioli on the side. They were probably the best fries I've had in a long time, and I LOVED the mini bottle of ketchup! We also had the sesame & soy braised short rib lettuce wraps with turmeric apples and kochujang sauce. These had so much flavor! But the Kurt's Camembert Crostinis with fennel and apricot jam were absolutely our favorite! It seemed like such a weird combination but it was actually so delicious that we ordered seconds! So even though the service at Trace was extremely slow, the prices were great for happy hour and the food was amazing, so I would probably go back again. read more

I struggled with what rating to give Trace. If I could have given 3.5, I would have. First off, Trace is an offshoot of the swanky W Hotel so you definitely expect a certain level of stylish ambiance and great service. Our waitress was great and accommodating--but we had to wait on on our entrees for about 20 minutes and that's the deal breaker for a good review. It would have been one thing if this place was bustling--but we came in at 6:00pm and there were only 4 full tables. So it made me wonder if they were understaffed in the kitchen. The sushi was pricey but it was good. We had the Trace Roll, Angry Crab Roll, and Crunchy Shrimp Roll. All of them were delicious--no complaints on the taste. The rolls however were overpriced--even taking into account that you're paying for the swanky ambiance as well. It's hard to figure out what exactly is going on with a restaurant during restaurant week. Are they coming up with a compromised menu to fit the $30 price point or are they going the extra distance to really showcase their food. In the case of trace, I'm going to assume it's the former because if what we ate was a showcase then this restaurant needs a lot of work. There was nothing we had that was bad but I think the best thing I could say about my meal was that it was better than mediocre. My risotto was dry and really undercooked. I like my risotto with a little bite but not with a little crunch. The desert was the highlight. I'm not a big desert person but the trifle was noteworthy. I was impressed by the fact they had a real kids menu ... most higher-end restaurants don't. I was, however, disappointed by the burger on the kids menu. There seems to be this trend to overcook burgers for kids. I realize that kids may not like a bloody burger but I don't see why they can't leave a little pink in there just so the meat doesn't dry out so much. Our son, who normally loves hamburgers, ate a few bites and then put the burger down. Again, I wouldn't say this was a bad restaurant but I don't see myself coming back here anytime soon. read more
