Found Towne Motor Car through a Yelp search and a great review my an acquaintance. I don't have a regular garage, and have only visited a few repair shops over the years with different cars Ive had. Most recently after parking my key fob became stuck and the starter didn't engage. After trying AAA for a jump (and sold a new battery) I found myself in need of repair when the new battery didn't start the car. Using AAA to tow it over. Ive never been here and honestly have barely noticed it on Edward St when Ive driven by. Set back from the road a bit with their parking lot in front, upon walking in you realize how deep the building is and how much fits in it. (Neat) Well they gladly accepted my car, I had it towed after calling and discussing what I knew with Chris over the phone and make sure they had availability. The reason that I came here for wasnt as serious as I feared. Upon coming back those fears were met by what it cost to pass the NYS inspection. Obviously no fault of their own, I have a 2013 Chevy that is a hand me down from my parents and had already expected one issue that would probably needed to be addressed. (The Tires) Overall Im really impressed with Towne Motor Car, they were genuinely nice with every interaction and gave me the information that I needed to make a decision or had the conversation with me when what I thought was an issue wasnt. What really impressed me was when I had my car in for the starter issue they fixed the key issue (separate issue in my mind) and they even put my slightly fallen bumper back in place. Going above and beyond for a customer, very strange nowadays. But greatly appreciated! Bringing back in for the inspection they were easy to coordinate the drop off (key in the box, but they were open before 8 to hand it off). I received a call mid-morning to go over the issues needed to be addressed and got a timely call and text near the end of the day to pick it up. Plus they have a website where you can review your past service history, and make appointments. They even use your preferred communication method to reply back (call or text). Although I hope I dont need it soon, I think I found a garage to stick with. read more

Went here today in the recommendation of a coworker. All I needed was an inspection, which was overdue. They asked if I could come in right away ( yes! ), and off I went. As soon as I entered I was greeted and asked to take a seat, grab a magazine, turn on the heat? It was chilly) and just wait a bit. They took my key and off we t my car. Less than 15 minutes later, I had my new sticker. They made suggestions for Brakes but said to wait til spring, and recommended 2 new tires and showed me why. Told me they'd call with prices on Monday- there was no hard sell, just great customer service. Kudos to Chris the manager ( owner?) It's a basic shop - do g expect t it to be laid out like a fancy dealer, but the customer service is first rate! I'll be trying them fur future repairs... and some tires too I guess ! read more

I have a higher mileage car, that I plan on keeping for a bit, and I hate when things aren't working right. I try to do as much as I can by myself (maintenance, oil changes, etc), but my car recently needed a new clutch. Towne Motor Car had me in and out of there in two days (this includes getting the parts, pulling the transmission out to get to the clutch, replacement of the clutch, reassembly, and testing). They've taken care of all of the bigger jobs that come with owning a vehicle for a longer period of time. My car feels like new, and I'll continue to trust Towne Motor Car with any future needs. A waste of time. After much research, I thought that Towne could be trusted for repair work. I made an appointment online with the expectation I would be contacted as described in the instructions. When I was not, I called to get some clarification. Aaron was disinterested, and told me "Chris" would call back. This was a Friday and the appointment was scheduled for Monday. When there was no call or email from this garage, I had to assume the appointment was cancelled. It's unfortunate that they lack the professionalism and common courtesy to reach out communicate with potential customers. At no time did they ever email me or call, so I am left with no alternative to voice my dissatisfaction here. They had their chance to communicate with me, and they squandered it. This is a an example of a business that prides itself on being number one, but I think about the Avis underdog commercials "We try harder", and look what happened to Hertz..... read more

Called on Tuesday needing new tires and an inspection. Chris helped me, over the phone, pick out what tires I wanted and told me the price. Super helpful right from the start and was honest with his opinions. He actually advised I go with the cheaper option cause the tread life was better! Appointment is on Friday and I go out to start my car. Put in key. Turn it. And NOTHING. Car battery is dead I think and I'm unsure what to do. I call the shop to let them know what happened and immediately they offer to get me in touch with a tow guy. I said I think it's the battery and I live down the street. They offer for me to walk down to the shop and let me borrow a power pak. Full disclosure I never used one and admitted it on the phone. I get to the shop and instead they have Aaron walk down the street with me back to my car. The whole way we walked to the car and while he was setting it up he talked me through what the issue could be. Not only asking but also giving really clear feedback as to what I could expect to hear if something like this happens in my car. He taught me how to use one of the packs and explained to me what I'd have to do. He drove the car back to the shop for me and I was able to go inside for my 9am meeting. I was so impressed with them and I will be making this my go to mechanic from now on. Very down to earth, approachable people who understand not everyone they service is going to be a car expert. Whatever you do, do not bring your car here to be worked on. The previous owner Jerry was amazing but now that his arrogant son Aaron took over the business it has gone down hill quickly. I went in for a simple inspection for a brand new vehicle and they told me I had to remove the tints and that they were capable of doing the job, well they removed the window tints but in the process they ruined my brand new car. The windows no longer work properly and they refuse to fix their mistakes. I was told they spent too much time on the car already and aren't making enough money from my business to properly fix their mistakes. Whatever you do never go to this mechanic, Aaron is unqualified and has terrible customer service skills and would rather yell at his customers and give up on the job versus doing the work correctly. read more

We were driving through Buffalo to Niagara and had some issues with our Honda. After calling some local Honda dealers (and being told they couldn't help us), we fortunately stumbled on Towne. Aaron, Chris and the rest of the crew were fantastic! They took great care of our van, and gave us priority knowing that we were on our way out of town again the next day. I was a little reluctant to have to find a new mechanic knowing my vehicle wasn't going to make it out of the city limits to my normal one and was referred here by a few friends (plus I pass it regularly on my way to Founding Fathers.) just calling to make an appointment they were friendly and knowledgeable and pretty much diagnosed over the phone what I thought the issue was. They called me by 9am with the final diagnosis and estimate along with an additional estimate on tires that I knew they might suggest. There was no pressure whatsoever so I just went with the throttle body repair. Price was fair and competitive (even though I wish it had been less but nature of the beast) and they were done by 3pm. Very friendly and definitely quick, they certainly aren't trying to screw any of us non car savvy folks. I'll be back again - just hopefully not for such a large repair! read more

I've been going to Towne for about 15 years now and don't plan on ever going anywhere else. When we moved a few years ago to the 'burbs we thought we would try a garage closer to home and immediately regret it. It's worth the extra miles to know you're getting honest, fast, reasonable, and reliable service from really talented mechanics. It's the only place I recommend to anyone anymore. By the way - they have employees that are as loyal as their customers, which says a lot. They're also great at the "tell me what it sounded like" puzzle... somehow they always know what's wrong when you have NO IDEA. Plus, giant bonus: they're next to Founding Fathers! How many car mechanics in town can brag about that? One. I challenge you to find another mechanic in Buffalo with more consistent or better reviews, on Yelp or elsewhere. I'm updating my assessment of Towne to five stars. Since my first interaction with them, they've also fixed my back license plate lights and my glove box handle. Both times, they were quick, polite, communicative -- and really affordable. Plus, they're right near Merge and a quick walk to Cafe 59 and Spot on Delaware, making it very easy to leave your car there and go get some work done in a cafe, or just have lunch with friends while you wait. Jerry, the owner, has a great reputation, and he always did good work for me. Prices were on the high side, but reasonable for a higher end place at this location. Then, like another reviewer, the new front end guy Jerry put in place (Chris) gave me a bad feeling. I think at one point I annoyed this guy. About six months later, I am 100% certain he recommended expensive work that didn't need to be done. In fact, I had another mechanic lift the car and show me the specific parts that Chris said were shot , and show me why they were only 20% worn. I didn't do the work Chris recommended, and years later the car still drives fine. It is possible that this was an honest mistake - but again, I already was getting a bad vibe from the guy, so I won't risk it. I should have talked to Jerry about it, but didn't. I haven't been to the shop in more than a year, so if Jerry has another guy running the shop now, I'd definitely go back if I needed to change mechanics. read more

My father and family before me went with Jerry at Towne Motor car for years. Until I started servicing my own vehicles there, the anecdotal account would have it that the same problems needed to be fixed over and over on his cars. I suppose the reason we all stuck with him so long is that Jerry is honest, friendly, and professional. The shop is technically competent; they get the job done, in my experience. Jerry personally guarantees their work; if you went out of town, and something he fixed broke, he would go out of his way to make it right. Years back, I warped a cylinder, and it was fixed maybe a few days to a week later, never to recur again. Minor maintenance, they do well. They give an honest price on parts; labor is expensive, something like $70/hr. The reasons I stopped going to them is that their new front end guy Chris (Jerry comes in as needed now, for executive stuff and in a pinch for specialized work), he just rubs me the wrong way. He seems to have the attitude that the customer is an annoyance; a kind of "don't call us, we'll call you" passive aggression. I actually caught him inflating my bill once with taxes/fees, and it took my protestations and Jerry's attentions to get a remedy. Jerry is willing to work with you financially; Chris is not. Jerry would get you in quickly; with Chris, its add yourself to the cue, buddy. I had them remove one bolt for me recently, and it cost me more than $70 for less than an hours work; I don't believe it would have cost that much a few years ago. I would never get an oil change here; or minor repairs, but they are there for when big stuff breaks, and you need someone competent and professional to help. read more

So, I'm a new car owner. I don't have much experience and, frankly, I can't wait to get rid of the car I'm driving. But that's just me. But, when I had a recent failure on the part of my alternator, Towne Motor Car was there for me. And they did a great job. I don't feel like they overcharged me and, considering they had to send someone out to me (as my car had died a block and a half away), they seem incredibly courteous and wonderful. I had a good interaction with them and they were helpful and friendly. Basically, the guy coming to get my seemed like it was a very friendly gesture and something over and beyond the normal job. My Dad had been taking our families cars to Towne for years, so naturally when my car's lease expired and I decided to buy it out, I started to take my car to them too. I've always had issues with mechanics. Felt like they weren't honest with me about the work my car needed or feeling as though I was over charged. Not with these guys, while they aren't the least expensive in town, their service is more than worth what you pay. They are honest, and completely willing to take the time to talk to you about any of the work they are doing with your vehicle. Several times dropping everything going out of their way to help me with what I need including taking care of a heat guard that came loose when I just happened to be nearby. I don't really live nearby, but I will always go out of my way to get my car to these people, you should too! read more

Hands down, the best auto shop in Buffalo, NY. These guys refuse to let you spend more money than you have too. They use quality parts and do quality work. We have taken our cars to Towne for nearly 20 yrs. We usually work with Chris who we met at another shop. When Chris moved, we moved with him. We usually buy pre-owned certified and bring it to Chris to eyeball. If Chris gives the thumbs down, we keep shopping. Best Chris story. Chris is a great guy, as are the rest of employees. Incredibly helpful, understanding, and communicative. They also do top-notch work. This is my go-to car place. They're always friendly and helpful. The prices are reasonable; not cheap but not over priced. They're also very honest about what needs to be done versus what can be put on hold until later. There is usually a day or two wait for non-emergency repairs or general maintenance, but never more than that. An added benefit is that it's walking distance to downtown, so I can drop my car off in the morning and walk to work. No need to figure out rides. Once when I was parked a few blocks away and my car wouldn't start, Aaron came to the rescue even though it was 5 minutes before closing on a Friday! Finding a mechanic you can trust is difficult. I have always brought my Jeep to our family friend mechanic back on Long Island, but since moving to Buffalo, I have been hesitant about bringing my vehicle to anyone in fear that they would completely rip me off and suddenly notice that I need this this and that and in the blink of an eye my bill is in the thousands. This was not the case at Towne Motor Car. I was having a fuse issue with my car, the windows were not working and doors would not lock. I called Towne Motor Car, explained my issues and within two days they were able to service my Jeep. They had a key drop off in their door, which was very convenient. I left a little note explaining what I needed fixed in the car and first thing in the morning, I had a voicemail from one of the workers to go over what I had written, very thorough. The guys I spoke with on the phone were extremely kind, communicative and made sure I understood everything they were doing to my car. They explained cost of labor and cost of parts before completing any work to make sure I was okay with what they were doing. My car was fixed within a couple of hours and when I went to pick it up, they gave me a slip for a free oil change. The process went very smoothly, was no more expensive than other mechanics I had brought my jeep to for this problem and the customer service was excellent. We were in a real bind. Instead of doing what most other places would do to out-of-towners with a dying car, they saved our vacation. We chugged into Buffalo late in the afternoon with a failing water pump while en route to Niagara Falls. Towne Motor Car's guys saw what a predicament we were in and saved the day. They diagnosed the situation in minutes at no charge, gave us an estimate way below what the dealer would have charged and saw us on our way before dark with a brand-new pump expertly installed. My wife and I have been bringing our vehicles here so long that I don't remember when we started. I know how to price out a repair and Towne Motor Car gives a fair price for excellent work. I am surprised by the two negative reactions to Chris. I find him to be personable as well as professional. Chris doesn't recommend needless work. Actually, the mechanic checks things out and informs Chris as to the condition. In fact, there have been a couple times that my assessment of a mechanical issue - "It's either (this) or (that)." - has been deemed to be the lower cost repair. It's also funny when someone complains about having to get in line behind the people who are already in line. Yeah, Chris will tell you to get in line but, if there is a real need for you to have the vehicle asap, he'll do what he can. Great service, fair pricing, good people read more

They encourage you to drop the car off on your way to work and pick it up at the end of the day. Today, I dropped one of our work trucks off around 8am. By 8:30, they called me that it was done and ready to come pick up. We use them to service all four of our work vehicles, which end up taking a beating when we use them in the field. Unprofessional pricing. Gives a quote for labor and parts, then charges higher for labor when you bring your own parts (rather than buying their parts) WITHOUT informing you ahead of time, i.e. after doing the work. Also, provides a convenient reason for the higher charge e.g. "we had to remove a wheel to get the job done" (as if they don't know what work it requires ahead of giving the quote for the work). read more

Although I agree with the previous reviewer's comment that Chris does not have Larry's personal charm, I have found him to fair and meticulous and friendly beneath a gruff exterior. The last time I had some minor work done, Chris noticed a very slight rattle when accelerating the car to deliver it back to me took a moment to check it out. I have been using them for years. When I had an aging car, if a quality used part was available for much less, I was always informed about the option without having to ask. I am almost never charged for the labor involved in changing a turn signal or headlight (even though headlight bulbs are a pain on my VW). There have been a couple of minor annoyances. Once my friend's car was locked behind their fence for a week while they were closed for vacation. I was sure there was a reasonable explanation, and there was. Turns out they'd tried to call a couple of times and had been unable to get through or leave a message. Recently my oil was changed without my asking because it was overdue (by the way, their rates for minor work are reasonable). That only bothered me because they didn't ask ( could have had it changed without changing the sticker) Having said that, I consider that an error of over-nurturing, not under. They remember your name and your car, and most importantly, they figure out what needs to be fixed, don't fix what doesn't, and stand by their work! read more
