It feels great to be back at Tower Burger after 12 years! My bestie and I ate here for dinner on a foggy Sunday evening. It wasn't too busy at 5:30pm, but it got busier as it approached 6pm. We used to eat here for lunch on special occasions or for dinner before a show at our high school. The ambiance significantly changed for the better as it became modern with updated tables and gray chairs. Ordering was easy at their counter, and the staff on duty kindly writes it down including specific requests. I ordered a California Burger without cheese and tomatoes, while my friend ordered a hamburger. There's an option to add fries for approximately $4.99 to your burger orders. After placing and paying for our orders, we were able to sit at any table. Our orders were ready within 10 minutes. The burgers were perfectly charbroiled and were delicious and not heavy. It suited well with the avocado slices, lettuce, red onions and the toasted buns. The fries were crispy and not greasy. It matched well with a side of honey mustard sauce (as per my request). First let me say the staff is very nice. Place is immaculately clean and food always comes out hot, fast and nice presentation. We have tried a couple other sandwiches of lately and these are our thoughts. Patty Melt - Nicely grilled, but pretty bland and not very interesting. Little to no sauce, 1 slice of cheese and no grilled onions on small slices of rye bread. Tuna melt - again, not very interesting. Wonderfully grilled, but tuna had absolutely no taste. Tower Burgers location is a desolate burger spot since you would not find another burger place within more than over a half mile any direction. At Tower Burgers it offers different styles of burgers like the Burger with Brie and mushroom ( Paris). The menu also offers fish and chips with great cuts of cod fish and also prawns and chips. They also offer garlic and regular fries. I decided to get namesake burger "The Tower Burger" with bacon, caramelized onion, mushroom, cheddar cheese, and their secret sauce ( I have a hunch about what's in it). This is a mom and pop shop in Portola SF. Not many options in the area to eat. Located in its own lil parking lot. Get this.... You have to pay for parking! In a parking lot! In a NOT busy area in SF. So that was wild. I know it's Frisch but the area we were in... didn't think to get charged to park in a small lil parking lot. I'm writing this review as I'm devouring my medium well bacon cheddar burger (w/ extra sauce) and their deliciously crispy, almost toasty fries. Came inside to pick up my food and was greeted by a nice gentlemen, immediate smile, and just overall genuineness. The place wasn't too packed, but it's 12:30 on a Tuesday in a sleepier part of The City. I could see this place going real big. HANDS DOWN, best burger and fries I've ever had. The bun was buttery, burger cooked nicely (I don't usually like medium but I forgot to ask for well done and I'm so glad I didn't -- SOOOO juicy), bacon was thick and flavorful, and their secret sauce.... As I expected, there were plenty of burger and fries options on the menu, and if it was an indulgent Fatterday Saturday, I could see myself going for the Mushroom Swiss Burger with Chili Cheese Fries. However, I dodged a bullet and found they offer four salads. Of course, I went for their highest ticket item, the $12.49 Cobb Salad, which came in an intentionally lopsided bowl. It was a robust combination of mixed greens, tomato, red onion, carrot, cucumber, a halved hard-boiled egg, strips of Swiss cheese, toasted croutons, a fanned-out avocado half, and chunks of grilled, somewhat oddly flavored chicken (photo: https://bit.ly/2R9ibow). A walk for locals in the Miraloma neighborhood and parking for those stopping by. Tower Burger has been a long time staple in the area, offering very high quality, consistently priced burgers, chicken, salads, and more. I stopped by for the Cobb Salad, whose picture speaks for itself! As beautiful as it was delicious.. excellent mix of avocado, chicken, egg, and other veggies. An otherwise good burger seasoned to defection. They "can't" (read: won't) make a burger without their seasoning, which is very heavy on smoke flavoring. For those who don't know that's basically ashes and garlic. I'm leaving this review because ultimately this makes it something I cannot eat. I otherwise was eating here two or three times a week because they have a grill and put in the effort but unfortunately this is more or less ruined by the seasoning. I've been eating at Tower Burger for many years, and their food is excellent. The burgers are tasty, the fries portions generous, and they almost always cook them the way I order. I highly recommend their food. It's not gourmet burger, just a good solid dependable burger. I've never really like their shakes however, always found them too thin and watery, even though they use Mitchell's Ice Cream. Mitchell's will not produce a thin shake unless you use a lot of milk, but that didn't explain the watery aspect. Too much milk gets you a thin creamy shake. Well the other day I got a shake and discovered a lot of crushed ice in it, so I figured they must be using the ice as filler, which explains the watery taste and lack of creaminess. So it's almost like a shake meets a slurpee. The shakes aren't cheap, and other places don't do this, so hopefully they will change this recipe. Still I heartily recommend the burgers, but be aware of the shake situation. read more
