The concierge at the hotel recommended the 3 hour tour to get a feel of the the city. A bit pricey but worth it! The mini bus covers a 50 mile radius and provides highlights with a few short photo stops. I wish I could recall our tour guide/ driver name as she gave us a lively tour with a lot of interesting tidbits (good story on the Fremont troll). Some attractions we saw were Pioneer Square, Bruce Lee's place in Chinatown, the sports stadium, Space Needle, Museum of Pop Culture, Alki Beach and Amazon headquarters. I would like to share my 5 star experience with the Tours Northwest Mount Rainer trip that enriched 11 hours of my life from 7:10 A.M. to 6:05 p.m., on Tuesday, July 30, 2013. From 7:10 to 10:09 a.m., our tour guide Rick drove us to Mount Rainier National Park. I am a believer that the tour guide as much as the scenery makes a great tour. Rick is a very knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide, that shared from his experience of hiking to the Mount Rainier summit. Up to the time that we were leaving the park, Rick was a teaching machine on Mount Rainer, the Seattle suburbs, and Washington State. He is also a fantastic driver, which kept me relaxed. We'd enter the park from State Route 706 at the west entrance and leave the park from State Route 410 at the east entrance. Being that I am into geography, I appreciated seeing more of the State of Washington than entering and leaving from the same entrance. On the way to the park, we made two stops. The first was a parking lot near I-5 to meet the group coming from the hotels nearer the airport. Rick used this opportunity to hold up a State of Washington map that explained what we were going to see. The second was a 15 minute stop at the Graham Safeway. Knowing that I was soon going to loose phone reception, I used this as the Mount Rainer check-in. As he drove us toward the park, Rick entertained us with cool facts. Facts like Mount Rainier is part of the Cascades. There are 26 glaciers on Mount Rainier. 11, 000 people try to climb the summit and half turn around. A few minutes after entering the park at 10:09, we stopped at the Twin Firs Trail. Rick led us on a walk into a forest that is home to a couple of 800 year old trees and douglas firs and cedar bark. The next stop in the park was 20 minutes at Longmire. The highlight of this stop was standing on the suspension bridge with a view of Mount Rainier. Then there was 20 minutes at Narada Falls. I could spend hours just reading a book and listening to the waterfall. From 12 to 1:50 p.m., Rick let us do our own thing in the vicinity of the Paradise Visitor Center. This is a popular trailhead for hiking up Mount Rainier. Of course in a little over an hour, there is just enough time for lunch and a short hike. Forget a serious hike to Mount Rainier. We followed Rick's suggestion by doing a short hike up the paved Skylite and Myrtyle Falls Trail where the reward was a breathtaking view of Mount Rainier towering over rolling fields of blooming wildflowers and a stream. If we wanted to see Mount Rainier up close, Rick offered to let us use his binoculars. When I set eyes on Mount Rainier, I was optimistic that one day I will live the dream of hiking to the summit. At 1:50 p.m., as we headed east on the park road, Rick had us keep our eyes open for black bears. Believe me if I saw one I would of posted a picture. Our last stop in the park was at Box Canyon. Rick led us on a short walk. The depth of the canyon to the water is 115 feet. This was a sight to see. From this point on we drove on the distant east side of Mount Rainier. We had been on the distant south side. At 3:48 P.M. we left Mount Rainier National Park. From 4:05 to 4:30, the last stop was at Wapitz Woolies. This is where Rick collected the $119 for the ticket and where I got to try huckleberry ice cream. From 4:30 to around 6:05 p.m. Rick drove us back to Seattle. By now the show was over and we could just sit back in the comfortable bus and enjoy the scenery. Around 6:10 p.m., Rick dropped us off at the Seattle Hilton. Like any great experience the Tours Northwest Mount Rainier trip will live on in memories that will last a lifetime. read more

Many months ago Ann Peavey (@SeattleMaven) had a Twitter contest that resulted in me winning a couple of spots on the Tours Northwest city tour. I am pretty familiar with the city and wanted a longer trip, so I decided to take a vacation day and pay the difference to go on their Mount Rainier tour. I am SO HAPPY that I decided to do that! They only drop people off downtown because of the congestion in the early evening, but they're willing to pick people up at hotels in the U-District. Since that's much closer to home, that was where my boyfriend and I got picked up. The nice bit about getting picked up first was having a little bit of extra time to get to know Diann, our wonderful tour guide. The first great thing was probably how excited my boyfriend was to be a passenger. We've both been living in the Seattle area for years and he drives a lot, and could drive us to Rainier if he wants to, but he almost never gets to be a passenger. He really enjoyed seeing everything that he doesn't normally get to pay attention to because he has to focus more on the cars around him and on the driving. On the way to the mountain we also learned that Diann has an employment background that involves driving a bus and knowing a lot about nature and birds, so we knew she was very comfortable with the vehicle, and that we'd learn a lot about the area and park that we wouldn't know/learn if we went up there on our own. We went at the end of the season, so most of the restaurants in the park were closed, and we picked up lunch at a Safeway on the way. On the way to the park, we also got to know a few basic things about the other passengers (where they're from, what they do/did for a living, etc) and ask any questions we had. When we arrived at the park we took a brief walk, took some photos, had a bathroom break, and then kept driving. We had several stops at waterfalls and other spots of interest, but the biggest chunk of "outside the vehicle" time was at Paradise. It was October so it was quite cold and very foggy at first, but we had dressed accordingly, so it was fine. The plants and air up there were MAGICAL! It was so beautiful and... crisp. Rainier was sadly hidden in the fog, but it was still amazing and very cool to see the fog lift a bit while we were walking around on the trails, so a lot of the "mystery" land cleared up and we were able to see what was originally hidden from us. We didn't see any animals (except birds) on our walk, but a few others did. On the way out of the park, we made a few short (scenic) stops, and spotted a few black bears wandering the hillside (using binoculars provided by Tours NW). So cool! The trip back to Seattle was pretty quiet and quick, and we got dropped off at a convenient downtown spot. I definitely recommend Tours Northwest and, even if you're a local, the Mount Rainier trip! read more

Kevin does a phenomenal job in this Mt Rainier tour that is not to be missed for anyone visiting the Seattle area. The sheer enormity of the Mt Rainier park area and seemingly endless photo opp and hiking etc. sites make this prohibitive to visit on your own unless you have a week or more to learn. Kevin took us all over the park and provided so much historical detail (both on Mt Rainier and Seattle/Tacoma in general). You will feel like an expert after the 10 hours or so fully immerse you into all the main roads around the mountain, complete with many hiking areas (get as aggressive as you want with them). The Paradise Inn (1.5 hour stop) is the pinnacle of the tour as your very far up the mountain and at the station for the hardcore alpine climbers. Check out the binoculars where the rangers may be able to point out a climbing team near the summit. Another advantage is seeking the small towns and rental cabins available just outside the park. Kevin can give you all the info if you want to be one if the 10k people a year who attempt the climb to the peak. Or else just learn the history and enjoy the many stops for great photos. read more

It was a blur, but the Salmon ladder is probably the highlight of the tour. The driver did not give us time at the Space Needle which would have been the highlight, a 20 minute stop would have done the trick, so it was disappointing that he dropped someone off and drove off. It would have been better if the driver stopped talking about his dogs than the city attractions. He would be a good stand up comedian than a tour bus host. read more

Did the three hour Seattle City Tour. The tour bus picked us up at our hotel a few minutes late. The bus driver/tour guide was friendly and gregarious. Hit all the major tourist sites in Seattle. Why only two stars you ask? Well, everytime the bus driver said "Oh that's beautiful" and would stop and back up for us to see something, the stop only lasted a split second, not enough time to focus and take a picture, which is the point of the tour, you know...... Plus, the driver only gave us three minutes at the hilltop park that provides the most scenic pictures of Seattle. That was bullshit. That's why only two stars. And my displeasure was reflected in the gratuity I left. Zero. read more

My boyfriend was arguing with me the entire week, if we should spend the money and go on this tour or not. I am SO GLAD we did!!! We were staying a week in Seattle and really wanted to experience the nature aspects of Washington outside of the city. We looked up rental cars and other various methods of transportation, but finally decided on Tours Northwest. The convenience of them picking you up at your hotel, driving 2 hours to the state park, and 2 hours back to the city was worth the money alone!! Being from Florida, I am not used to driving on hills, let alone mountain paths!!! I can't imagine having to drive myself up to the state park. Our tour guide, Rick, was extremely knowledgeable and experienced! I felt like he spoke just the right amount to give you great facts about the city and the mountain, but he always knew when to have some quiet time and let everyone rest. Some of the other guests in our tour group liked to wander off and delay the stops, but Rick did a good job of rounding up the group to minimize any delays. We stopped at several locations all throughout the park. My favorite was the wooden bridge over the flowing water and snow shoeing at the top!! The nature scenery was breathtaking. Just stand there and take a deep breath! I swear the air just tastes so pure and pristine. I don't even know how to describe it. GORGEOUS. Maybe just look at the pictures I took, if they can do justice!? ** EARTH PORN ALERT ** (Am I allowed to say that word on here?) Bring sunglasses. If you don't, you'll only be allowed to snowshoe for 10 minutes before you burn your eyes out! The white snow is unforgiving on top of the mountain. Bring water and good food from the city. There's a cafeteria at the top base camp of the mountain... But it's over priced burgers and I don't even know what. My boyfriend did buy a Rainer beer to drink on top of Mount. Rainer. He thinks he's clever, hah! Bring an extra pair of socks. Yours will get wet during snow shoeing! It is optional, of course. read more
