Totoya, where have you been my whole life? I love this place. I'm so happy they opened a location in town, so I don't have to go to Kaimuki. This location is on Piikoi, around the corner from Hangang. Parking is in the back. We got there around 6:15pm. We got seated at 6:45pm. There were two parties of four before us in line. The hostess came outside and took our order before we got seated. It expedited the process. Once inside, I counted 12 seats. It's all bar seating. The food came out shortly, since we put our orders in advance. I got the Fukuju $37.90 (tuna, negitoro, red shrimp, salmon, scallops, sea urchin, salmon roe, snow crab, tobiko and 2 piece nori). My hubby got the Ume $18.90. He doesn't like all the extra stuff. All bowls come with miso soup. You can upgrade with shrimp head, crab or clam. We just went with the original. You can also get a raw egg with soy sauce for $1. I didn't get it as I don't like raw egg. My bowl was so good. All the seafood was fresh, firm and sweet. I poured on some of their house made soy sauce and it was perfect. I will be back. Be sure to get a frequent dining card. After 10 stamps you get $15 off and free upgrade to crab miso soup. read more

Taste: 5 Creativity/Authenticity: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Service: 5 Bang for your buck: 4 I didn't think any place could top maguro bros but I Think I found my new favorite spot!! This is my second eating at Totoya and let me tell you wowzers everytime! I always get the fukuju because you get a bit of everything and for a little more money you get all the good stuff! Service here is as good as it can get, and it gets busy, came here 15min after they opened and was seated and already a line started to form. Overall this will be my go to spot when I want fish and an amazing kaisen bowl!! Thanks for the food read more

Totoya - Get the "Fukuju" if you want a taste of everything - Japanese Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

Good tuna bowl, but very very expensive. They are advertising for their Negitoro bowl, which is tuna, however, be aware that if you add the salmon eggs, dress up your miso soup, your meal will cost more than $50 dollars at this little hole in the wall place. We got here on a Thursday just before 1pm, no line, and the biggest promotion of this place was the negitoro bowl. It is tuna with crab meat, sea urchin and we paid $10 additional dollars for salmon eggs, where the servers made a lot of celebratory noise when they drizzled your bowl with salmon eggs in front of you. Everything tasted good and fresh. The seat is tight and narrow. These meal cost as much as a plate of steak in a fancy restaurant. So I have to think about that before going next time. They don't serve beer and don't let you bring your own. read more

Note- they don't take reservations here. Cozy location in front of Ala Moana shopping center. We stood in line for a few minutes outside but they're efficient. They take your order while you're in line and you get your bowl super fast when you walk in. It's a really small space and we sat at the counter. There's a lot of yuzu stuff here like the salt, salad dressing and ginger all have yuzu flavors which I thought was a bit strange. The bowl we ordered was fresh and delicious. I thought the prices were kind of high for the small bowl, though. Loved the variety of fresh seafood. The miso soup comes with the bowl you order. As for service, it was a little creepy attentive. You serve your own water here but I had the workers just stand behind us watching. I'm not sure if it was because they just opened but it was quite awkward in this tight space. We already had the chefs directly in front of us and to have other workers behind us watching was strange. Overall, it was a great quick dinner but likely won't be back. It's a tight space and although the fish and scallops were super fresh, I felt underwhelmed. I was still hungry after my meal. read more

Food: I ordered the original negitoro and it was amazing super fresh and packed with flavor, and adding the egg shoyu made it even better. The miso soup was also really good, simple but satisfying. Ambiance: The space is small and intimate, which made it feel cozy. Because it's not very big, the workers were really attentive and checked in on us often. Service: Service was excellent, polite, quick, and thoughtful. I've heard it gets really busy, but since we came about 30 minutes before closing, we hardly had to wait. read more

So happy they opened up this location. They are located on Piikoi Street (ewa side) and Waimanu St. There are metered stalls out front or on Waimanu St or..... free parking out back. I waited about 10-15minutes and there was about 4 people ahead of me. While we were next to enter the eatery.... A server came outside and took our order. Once there was. Seat available... we sat down, got our drinks and our order came out shortly... I suggest you eat and go. Don't socialize here so others get a chance to eat too. This is the PERFECT lunch spot. The size of the bowls are perfect. So filling!!! As you can see in my pics... I was kinda hoping the they went heavier on the roe. However, overall it was very tasty. Overall, I enjoyed this location. read more

Totoya - Ume bowl with seaweed miso - Japanese Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

My husband and I visit here often, so we were surprised by the bowls we received today. The portions seemed noticeably smaller than usual. The Miyabi Bowl had very little negitoro, the scallops were quite small, even the seaweed and salmon roe were sparse. My husband's Nagomi Bowl was also light on the negitoro. I was just relieved that nobody ordered the Ikura Shower during our visit. The last time we were here, a group next to us ordered it three times, and the bells were rung each time next to my ears. In such a small restaurant, the noise was extremely loud and uncomfortable. It might be worth considering how that affects other patrons' dining experience. We have enjoyed coming here in the past, which is why today's visit was disappointing. read more

Dinner in the Ala Moana area of Honolulu, Hawaii... My friend, Irene, is so smart... She saw that the second location of Totoya had opened on Piikoi Street... and she had seen a line in front of the shop - just like the Kaimuki location. So - what did we do? We went as early as we could for the 5pm seating and stood in line. It wasn't too bad because the sidewalk had shade and a nice breeze. The best part was when the pleasant server came to each party in the line, asked for the number of people in each group, distributed menus, and took orders. That's a very efficient system! Inside of the cozy restaurant, there are twelve seats. Help yourself to condiments and remember to grind your own sesame seeds for your topping! I got the "Ume" - it's the original negitoro bowl with cucumber, 2 pieces of nori, scallops, green onions, tobiko, and tuna on a bowl of rice. It was simple, fresh, and delicious! I prefer this location over the Kaimuki one! read more

Woohoo! Thanks for opening one up in my hood! That's trouble for me... having been to their Kaimuki location once, I've been meaning to go back. And then I was looking up Japanese food near home and saw Totoya? Huh? Piikoi? Oh they took over Honolulu sushi! Thats when I know I have to pay them a visit and I've had serious craving for their sashimi and the negitoro with the egg... It was 11:30am on a Saturday and there's a line outside. My wait was about 15 mins, not bad. There were only 12 seats altogether from what I saw so probably not good for a large party. Of course it's easiest and fastest to get seated if you come here by yourself. I got the Fukuju bowl again. I just can't pass up on the variety of stuff they offer! Tuna, salmon, sweet shrimp, uni, ikura, scallop, wakame, nori... everything I want in a bowl. Also I love their salmon miso soup with their yuzu shichimi, so good with the spice and the yuzu flavor! All the seafood was fresh. The only thing that they could improve was the uni quality. It wasn't the best. It's kinda mushy and melted a bit. Maybe it's just not uni season anymore. I guess I'll just wait until winter time to get uni again. Don't forget to get the shoyu egg! It's totally worth it to mix in the negitoro and eat it with the nori. Make yourself a little handroll! Service was great, friendly and fast. Thanks for opening one up in Ala Moana! read more

いらっしゃいませ~ That's the greeting you'll get once you step through the noren and the door as the host will inform the kitchen staff of how many are entering to be seated and a simple gesture like this takes me back to Japan and what a sense of pride is given as there's nothing that keeps you from seeing how it's all made and like the original Kaimuki location this one is on many folks list and with 12 counter seating it is cozy though the vibe does give you somewhat of a sushi bar feel. Everything you need is right there table side oshibori, dressing for salads, self serve water, house made shoyu, chopsticks and even Yuzu Pickled Ginger which I couldn't get enough as yuzu has always been my obsession and now I find it at many places. With long lines forming waiting to be seated a staff takes a moment to take our order and with some questions regarding my allergies I came to a decision of "Salmon bowl with salmon roe" which also has tobiko which I love. One thing that did disappoint me is the rice...kinda mushy considering a sushi place the base of pride is the rice though it's not shari/seasoned but it was pretty mushy which made me sad. The toppings tastes very fresh and my thick cut salmon as the though that I wasn't able to enjoy a bowl from here with my allergies was so happy to take in all this luxurious dish and as we left another grateful gesture of "ごちそうさまでした！どうもありがとうございます!" was said and love the professionalism the staff and kitchen shows is very nice. どうもありがとうございます！ read more

OH MY GOSH THIS WAS SO GOOD??? LIKE I KNEW IT WOULD BE BUT WHAT???? I ordered the Take, which contains the original negitoro with ikura, while my family ordered the Nagomi. In addition, we ordered the salad (which comes with yuzu-miso dressing) and three hot teas. We loved everything. The Negitoro has such an incredible variety of textures and my ikura added a necessary saltiness that complimented the dish perfectly. The yuzu-miso dressing was so interesting but I wish I could purchase it to use on my own dishes. It had the saltiness of the miso with the bitter, tartness of the yuzu. The salad came with tempura bits, dried ramen, and cabbage. It's a fairly large amount! My family loved the fish on the Nagomi, again they said the fish was fresh and only needed a bit of shoyu. We went right at 12 on a Saturday and barely waited in line. I would definitely recommend trying to get there earlier but I think having two locations has helped a lot. We parked across the street but I believe there's paid parking in the complex as well. In addition, they do point cards as well so I'd definitely pick one up after a meal. Employees are kind and attentive, which is especially nice due to how confined the space is. I will DEFINITELY be back! read more

Totoya - Japanese Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

Totoya is worth all the hype and then some! We came for lunch on a Sunday and there were 4 parties in line ahead of us. I'd estimate we waited for 20-30 minutes to be seated which is not bad considering the restaurant itself is pretty small. Depending on how many parties are wrapping up inside, they might take your order while you're still standing in line to speed up service. The inside of the restaurant is open kitchen and all counter seating. It's not really conducive to large groups, but not an issue for 1-4 people. Service was prompt, attentive, and friendly. I had the Take Negitoro Bowl and added the fresh egg yolk shoyu and I thought it was delicious. The seafood was very fresh and full of flavor. There's also a surprising amount of variety in this bowl: the seaweed salad and the wasabi can change flavors and textures as you work your way through so it's not just a one flavor throughout. You can also use the nori to make your own handrolls! We also tried both the regular and the crab miso soup. The soup is nice and I thought the addition of the crab was unnecessary but also not unwelcome. I'd happily have the soup with or without the crab again. In fact, I'd happily have this whole meal again and again. There is a sizable parking lot around the corner shared with several other businesses, as well as a fair amount of street parking in the area. read more

Totoya - Take negitoro + miso soup + egg yolk shoyu - Japanese Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

I ordered the Fukuju bowl while my husband had the Tokujo bowl--both were incredibly fresh, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. The egg yolk shoyu is a must-add and takes the bowls to the next level. Our daughters loved their meals as well--udon and shrimp miso soup. In fact, my youngest enjoyed the shrimp miso so much that she was slurping it down so quickly she ended up spilling it on herself--that's how good it was! The team was attentive, warm, and welcoming, and the bar setting of this restaurant was so fun. Both made the experience even better. We loved our lunch here and will definitely be back. read more

An absolutely must try! I've been eyeing their original spot in Kaimuki for quite a while but I was semi deterred by all of the mentions of lines hah. Fortunately, when my partner and I came by this newly opened location, the line wasn't too long, just one large party ahead of us. While waiting, you can already decide what you'd like to order and to make sure that the processed is streamlined and there is no excessive waiting, the waitress took our order and answered our questions outside, so upon seating, we received our dish within 10ish minutes. One main question I had was what was the difference between the Fukuju and Tokujo bowls as they had the same pricing and similar ingredients. She clarified to me that the Tokujo has a much larger portion of the negitoro while the Fukuju has more sashimi cuts and less negitoro. Their establishment is small but the vibe is perfect. They even have a small bathroom which is an amenity that I wouldn't expect such limited spacing be able to provide. I ordered the Fukuju Kaisen Bowl and my partner ordered the Rainbow Trio Bowl. All of the sashimi within the bowls were SOOO fresh and tasted top quality. The shoyu egg is a must and I even feel like having two could have even compounded on the flavor of each bite. The complimentary miso soup was VERY salty though. Surprisingly, both my partner and I were stuffed by the end of this meal. We can both usually eat a heafty amount so we were definitely pleasantly surprised how satisfied we were. Like what I said in the beginning of the review, this is a must try, pricey but the quality makes it worth every dollar. read more

UGH, I cannot say enough about this place. I know, people talk about the long lines. Typically, that can be a turn off, but I waited 1.5 hours for this - trust me, this place is so worth it. The ambiance is authentic, like you almost got transported to Japan to have an amazing experience. FAVORITE ITEMS: - Take (Negitoro) Bowl with Ikura: I loved this! So I actually tried this bown and also the Matsu, but the additional uni did not make the experience better personally and I do love Uni. PARKING: there are some street parking on the side. PRICE: soooo worth it. It's $19 per bowl. Overall, I love this place. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone who comes to Hawaii and I will for sure come back and wait in that line! * ADD-ON the yolk with the survey link that is posted for free! * BE sure to get the stamp cards read more

Totoya - Negitoro Bowl - Japanese Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

My new favorite Japanese restaurant outside of Japan! Let me start with the punchline so you know my verdict right away: we went twice in the same week during our stay in Honolulu. I found this place searching very specifically for negitoro, since I lament the closing of Michinoku some years ago. Although this is (apparently) a relatively new branch of another location and not a ma-and-pa shop type of feeling, it did have an authentic Japanese feel given the coziness of the inside space but also the friendliness of the staff. The menu is relatively simple, with one page on negitoro-specific bowls on the left (each with different additions to negitoro) and other bowls on the right page. The bowls also come with free seaweed miso soup that you can pay to upgrade. My favorite was the Nagomi bowl, with negitoro, salmon, scallop, and shrimp - all my favorites. Hubby tried a couple others that he also enjoyed. I upgraded my miso soup to the shrimp one on the first day - it was good but the basic seaweed one was also very flavorful so I didn't feel the need the second time around. I would've eaten the whole shrimp head had they deep fried it. There's a little instruction guide that offers tips on how best to enjoy the food, especially with the sesame grinder and the yuzu spice for the miso soup. My personal preference would be that they didn't add cucumber bits into the negitoro but I understand that they did it for the crunch. I also think that the price was very reasonable for the quality of food. Please keep it up (or down :))! They have loyalty cards that we were diligently filling - hoping that we'd still have the card next time we return, because we will return! read more

Totoya - Delicious. - Japanese Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

Definitely worth checking out. It has a bit of a hole-in-the-wall feel--cozy, with limited seating--but they run things really efficiently. They'll take your order while you're waiting outside, so by the time you sit down, your food comes out pretty quickly. If you go on a weekday afternoon, you might have a short wait. We went on a Tuesday and waited about 15 minutes with just a couple people ahead of us. It actually worked out well since it gave us time to look through the menu without feeling rushed. One thing that was surprisingly helpful--they do have a bathroom, which you might not expect given how small the space is. Parking wasn't super clear to us, so we ended up parking at Ala Moana and walking a couple blocks, which was easy enough. If you're an ikura fan, the ikura shower is a must-try. Totoya is a gem of a shop serving up super fresh, reasonably priced negitoro and kaisen don bowls. It's the perfect meal when you're in the mood for raw seafood and rice but don't want to drop $$$ on a formal sushi meal or omakase. It's a sister restaurant to Izakaya Tenkichi and the ambiance is similar- feels like Japan when you walk in! It's walk in only and seats perhaps 12 at the bar, best for groups or 4 or less. There's almost always a line so if you don't want to wait, try to get there right at opening times. The menu is outside so pick what you want so you can order as soon as you're seated. Each bowl comes with miso soup, which you can upgrade, and an optional salad add on. The left page of the menu features a big pile of negitoro on rice, then as you move down the page you can add different premium seafoods to build the bowl up. It's super filling! The right hand page is similar, each bowl comes with a smaller pile of negitoro but the emphasis is more on other seafoods like salmon, scallop, shrimp etc. The far right side of the right page has a few bowls with no negitoro at all, if you don't like it or want to limit your ahi intake. There is self serve utensils, water, condiments, and wet wipes at the bar. Service is very fast and polite and since there's always a line, it's not a great place to linger for a long meal. Credit only and don't forget to collect your punch card stamps. They also offer limited takeout on inari sushi topped with negitoro and different seasonal special bowls. We came around 1 p.m. on a Tues, and there were only two parties of two ahead of us. Our wait ended up being about 30 minutes before we were seated. While we were in line, a staff member came outside to take our order, which was such a nice touch because once we sat down, our food came out almost immediately. I loved how efficient and fast the service was! It is very small inside with limited seats. We ordered the Matsu and Nishiki bowls with egg yolk shoyu on the side. Totoya is the kind of place you keep in mind when you want something simple done really well. I ordered the negitoro bowl, and it hit all the right notes. The tuna was fresh, finely chopped, and clean tasting, with just the right balance of richness and lightness. Mixed with the scallions and rice, every bite felt cohesive and satisfying without being heavy. It is a straightforward dish, but the quality of the ingredients makes it shine. Service was polite and efficient. Staff members were attentive without hovering, and everything came out smoothly, even during a busy stretch. There is a calm confidence in how they run things, which adds to the overall experience. The ambience is quiet and comfortable, leaning more toward a relaxed Japanese dining feel than anything trendy. It is a place where you can focus on the food and enjoy your time without distractions.
