Yelp definitely led me astray with the wait times at Totoya. My wife and I stopped by on a Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. -- a full hour before they opened, in full anticipation that there would be a long line, and to our surprise, there was not a single party in line. Around 10:20 a.m., one couple showed, but at 11:00 when they opened, it was still only just our two parties in line. Five minutes before they opened, the waitress actually came out to take our order so they could get a head start on our orders (and because they felt bad that we had been waiting for so long outside). If you're stopping by early to wait, just be prepared to brave the hot sun, as there's no awning, trees, or shade to hide under. My wife ordered the Matsu bowl, while I ordered the Miyabi -- their Kaisen bowl with two pieces of tuna, negitoro, a sweet shrimp, three pieces of scallop, salmon roe and tobiko. We both opted to add the soy marinated egg. Many reviewers have mentioned that the uni doesn't really add much to the experience and I'd have to agree with them. The uni is fine, but it's not worth the extra splurge over the base bowl in my opinion. What makes Totoya a memorable experience for me was the high quality of all the ingredients. I loved the sweetness and tenderness of the shrimp and the scallop, and the negitoro had multiple layers of texture throughout. The fluffy rice is perfectly cooked and the soy marinated egg yolk oozes a wonderful richness that nicely complements the fish. If you want to change up the flavor profile even more, there is also fresh sesame seeds available at the table you can grind in as well. The kaisen bowls here definitely hold their own compared to the ones I had in Hokkaido last year -- absolutely delicious! I would not hesitate to stop by Totoya again if I'm in Oahu.

Probably my favorite chirashi bowl I've ever had - and we've been to Japan! Fresh fish and a mountain of food in a bowl, Totoya deserves the line that they get, and if you don't come early, you'll definitely see one! Nonetheless service was amazing and they get people in and out fairly quickly. Seating is limited, so be wary if you have a big group. They also have a fish egg bomb as an add on, and the experience for it is so fun! Highly recommend, especially if you're in Oahu :)

I literally felt like I was transported back to Japan! This was so yummy! This place was just across the street from the mall so was very convenient for us after some light shopping. There was a bit of a wait as there are only 8 seats available. But once seated, you get your food fairly quickly. Food was so fresh and delicious. I'm not a huge fan of ikura but it was so fresh and not at all fishy. Service was also great. 10/10 would definitely come again!

The hype is real, Totoya is incredible. Yes, the place is small and there's usually a line, but it's 100% worth it. I went on a Monday about an hour before closing and got lucky with no line. Honestly... it ended up being one of my favorite meals on the island. If you like raw seafood, you're going to love this place. I ordered the Fukuju, which is basically a little bit of everything: tuna, negitoro, red shrimp, salmon, scallops, sea urchin, salmon roe, tobiko, snow crab, and nori over white rice. It also comes with miso soup (I stuck with the original, but there are upgrades) and I had a hot green tea on the side. It was the perfect meal... So fresh!!! A few things to know: parking is very limited, so plan ahead. They don't take reservations, and because it's such a small spot (maybe around 8 seats), there's almost always a wait. I believe they have other locations too, so that could be a good option if this one is packed. Can't wait to go back.

We had such a nice experience here. The staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely a nice experience if you can't go to Japan. The fish was fresh and soy egg yolk is a must. I enjoyed the ability to make a couple of hand rolls and just enjoy the high quality fish and rice. It wasn't too busy so we did not experience any wait times.

Tried Totoya and it was just okay. There was a line outside even though we were told no wait over the phone, which made it feel like hype. Seating was unorganized. They wouldn't seat us because a group of 8 ahead of us was waiting to be seated together, even though there were 2 open seats that stayed empty for a long time. Food was average. Pretty standard sushi bowls with nothing that stood out in this price range. Not bad, but not worth going out of the way for.

I tried the Salmon Don and it was so delicious! It was a lot of fish too for $17, I was pretty filled. The service is best for smaller parties (1-2ppl) since this is more of a smaller/cozy establishment.

Just like a shop in Japan with a homey vibe. Delicious, fresh quality fish with beautiful sashimi pieces, Uni, and also roe! There are options to upgrade your soup. Make sure you ask for the sauce as it will change your dish! They are often crowded and a line will form outside. It is worth the wait. Counter seating only!

I love Totoya so much!!! It's pretty much always my first stop after I land. The service is amazing, everyone who works there is so sweet. It's a super small spot with only bar seating, but worth the wait if you go during peak hours. I'm glad they opened a third location in Aiea now! The Nishiki bowl is my go-to. If you're a fan of uni, definitely get the Fukuju bowl. I always leave full and happy. Plus it's right across from Ala Moana, so you can walk it off after or swing by Foodland and grab some poke for later They also have a stamp card! So if you're going often like me, make sure to get one before you leave.

Negitoro Bowl with Miso Soup

It's a small counter with limited space so be prepared to wait in line. Since there was two of us, the wait was not as long as anticipated (15-20 mins). Everything you need in terms of utencils and condiments are right in front of you. Had the negitori bowl and it was quickly prepared with fresh ingredients. They only give you a few pieces of seaweed and will charge you more if you need more. Solid spot with friendly and good service. If it's hot outside, be prepared to wait in the hot sun outside.

Went here with the wife on a Monday lunch time. Instead of trying to find a parking we did some shopping at Ala Moana then walked over. We were lucky when we got there to get seated right away. There were 2 other couples in at the time. The restaurant is very nice on the inside and very comfortable vibe. The wife had the negitoro bowl and I had the kaisen bowl. The wife had an egg on the side. She had the crab miso and I had the salmon miso. We both ordered a cup of tea. The order came up quickly and all the items were fresh. My wife who normally won't have the egg said it was quite good with no after taste. When it comes to seafood and sushi I am a tough grader. I've been fortunate to try some very good places and have visited Japan many times. I felt that for what I paid ($100+ with tip) it didn't quite meet up to my standard. If I could I would have given it a 3.5. Would I go again, probably not but like my wife always says, "good to try".

Yesss! We finally made it to Totoya's Ala Moana location after repeated attempts to get into their OG Kaimukī site.

Itadakimasu! (いただきます!) I've been eyeing the luscious, fresh negitoro don ネギトロ丼 and kaisen don 海鮮丼 from Totoya Kaimukī, which I've been seeing online since it opened in late 2024, but I keep missing going there because they've always been so crowded, and we didn't want to wait in line. However, as luck would have it, this popular restaurant recently expanded to the Ala Moana neighborhood, so we made a point of stopping by after our exercise session. As we approached the restaurant, a couple was waiting at the doorway, and we worried we wouldn't be seated right away. When we peeked into the restaurant, we saw just one other couple already seated at the counter, and followed the couple at the door in. We were surprised to get in at a non-busy time, and the cheerful female server provided us with menus while asking whether we wanted any hot or cold beverages in addition to the pitchers of water on the counter. I was ready to order a negitorodon, but my husband wasn't, so she allowed me more time to scan the restaurant and its posters. If you're wondering what a negitoro don ネギトロ丼 is, the best way I can describe it is "minced or scraped raw fatty tuna on rice." It is a deceptively simple dish, but it is luxurious-tasting because of its main ingredient: raw fatty tuna. The raw fatty tuna is scraped from the skin and bones, unseasoned, and doesn't contain minced vegetables, but its preparation is similar to that of fish tartare. The raw tuna is usually topped with minced green onions for textural contrast. This raw tuna sits atop rice. Food: -"Matsu" Negitoro don: the "Matsu" bowl is a combination of the OG negitorodon, which has the followingingredients: tuna, scallops, cucumber, kazunoko, tobiko, green onions, sesame seeds, and 2 pieces of nori + sea urchin + salmon roe. I think because the negitoro was creamy and somewhat mushy, the rice also seemed mushy to me, too. I ordered the raw egg yolk + shoyu ($1.50) to mix and drizzle over my dish, but thinkingabout it, the rice bowl didn't need it, and the yolk + shoyu mixture made the rice even mushier. Still, the fresh, clean-tasting seafood could shine. Our server recommended the miso soup of the day (salmon) for an additional $2.90, which tasted stellar! $34.95 -"Fukuju" Kaisen don: the Fukuju rice bowl's ingredients were what I'd call "Everything but the Kitchen Sink" as it contained: sliced raw tuna, salmon, scallops, lobes of sea urchin, whole red shrimp, salmon roe, Snow crab, tobiko, OG negitoro, seaweed salad, and 2 pieces of nori. This bowl was a combination of a negitoro don and chirashizushi, though not as festively presented as chirashizushi usually is. My husband also added yolk + shoyu for $1.50, but agreed that the mixture made the rice feel mushy. $39.50 Still, it was a lot of food, and we left feeling like a good coma coming on, and were happy to have eaten these rice bowls after working out. Next time, we won't upgrade with yolk + shoyu and will rather consider adding the "Ikura Shower."

On Valentine's Day, we came here an hour before opening, to stand in line, and we were the first ones (fyi it only seats 10 people max). It wasn't necessary, but we wanted to secure our spot at this restaurant for sure. I got the Take Negitoro Bowl plus the Ikura Shower (I recommend this if you're an ikura lover - it's fresh and the marinade was perfect), and my husband got the Maguro Lover, which he loved. Btw, the Ikura Shower comes with a special presentation from the workers with a song! So fun and this spot is the jam. I also ordered the miso soup and salad on the side - you can skip the salad.

I decided to finally go out of my usual choices and try Ginza out. Ginza is located in the main ward building (the one with the theater), on the side, between Men's Warehouse and L&L. We got seated fairly quickly and was given water. Upon ordering we were also given edamame to nom on while we waited. We also decided to order two rolls, an AAB combo set to try a variety of things and fried calamari for food measure. We got: * Jen's Paradise: 9.7/10, heavily recommend. I was really craving sear salmon and it definitely helped to satisfy that craving. I didn't realize that the roll part itself ONLY has shrimp tempura within the nori (no crab salad, avo, etc). * Bomb: 8/10, clearly I lacked my reading comprehension skills this day because I didn't realize that this was baked... so when it came out and the entire roll was fully cooked I was heart broken. It tasted good, just not what I particular want at a sushi restaurant. * Chicken Karaage: 5/10. I do NOT recommend this. They remined me of mochiko chicken, but these were not very meaty or flavorful. * Fried Calamari: 10/10, fried to perfectly in my opinion, each piece was plump and delicious. * Miso Butterfish: 8.9/10, it was good, flaky and flavorful. Just not something I would order again, but it was good to try esp it is something they're supposedly known for. * Mixed Tempura: 10/10, yum I love mixed tempura, no notes, it was hot and crunchy. I would like to mention that our wait was quite long. I don't know why because they weren't like SUPER busy. It took 10-15 for us to get the miso soup and salad for the combo. +5 for the calamari, +5 for the first roll then a few minutes after for the rest. I feel like 15-20 minutes for our first actual item (calamari) to come is kind of crazy, it kept being brought to the wrong table (2-3 times). Our server apologized so its not a huge deal. Otherwise, I still enjoyed our experience. I would definitely come back again to try the rolls I would enjoy more (utilizing my reading skills a bit better LOL).

From the outside, it is a hole-in-the-wall, but don't let that fool you. This is by far the best sushi spot on Oʻahu. It is on the pricier side, but the quality and freshness make it well worth it. Everything we ordered was authentic, flavorful, and incredibly fresh. My favorite was the toro nigiri, rich and buttery, and it melts in your mouth. There is something deeply confusing about Mitch's Fish Market & Sushi Bar…read more Not bad confusing.Worse. Identity-crisis confusing. Because the fish?Excellent. Cold, clean, glistening with that dangerous little shimmer that tells you somebody in the supply chain actually cared. You can taste the quality immediately. The kind of quality that silences a table for half a second. And credit where it is due: almost everything I tried ranged from very good to genuinely great. But then the room begins speaking. And suddenly the spell breaks. The atmosphere feels like someone took a serious sushi counter, stripped away all sensuality, all elegance, all ritual, then dropped it inside a fluorescent island diner where exhausted civilians came to discuss parking validation and Costco receipts. It is the culinary equivalent of wearing a Rolex with orthopedic sneakers. The contradiction never stops humming beneath the experience. You sit there eating beautiful fish while surrounded by an energy that feels strangely... transactional. Heavy. Casual in the least flattering way. A room with no mystery. No seduction. No gravity. Like Zippy's accidentally wandered into the tuna trade and struck gold. And on an island like Oahu, where atmosphere matters almost as much as the fish itself that becomes a real problem. Because sushi is not merely consumption. It is theater.Restraint.Texture.Whispered precision. The best sushi spots on Oahu understand this instinctively. They understand that exceptional fish alone is not enough. You are paying for transportive experience. For mood. For elegance. For the feeling that the evening exists slightly outside ordinary life. At Mitch's, the fish reaches for Tokyo while the room drags you back toward a tired strip mall off the freeway. And then there's the crowd. Not evil people. Not rude people. Just an oddly low-rent energy orbiting genuinely premium seafood. The kind of room where one table is eating remarkable otoro while another feels one argument away from discussing used-car financing over soy sauce packets. It creates dissonance. Especially considering the prices. Because at those prices, you begin comparing the full experience not merely the fish quality and that is where Mitch's stumbles hard. There are multiple sushi spots across Oahu that equal or surpass the seafood while also delivering beauty, atmosphere, intimacy, and actual emotional texture. So what remains is this strange contradiction: Mitch's serves fish far above the dignity of its own ambience Which almost makes it fascinating. Would I be back - no . You can get same and better quality fish, much better vine, better part of town for the same Price.
