For the past 20 years plus, I have been a safety officer in a biotech facility & because our employees are required to wear safety eyeglasses, we needed a genuinely good optometrist. Our search was rewarded, we found and have been working with Dr Guiang and his highly trained staff at Mira Mesa optometry (MMO) since that time (1999/2000). Because of MMO's awesomeness, they have also been my family's optometrist for many years. But, the best endorsement we have is from our affected employees & we have the data to base this review on. You see, I schedule all of our affected employee's eye exams and then always follow up and ask them how they were treated and what their overall impression of their experience was; to date it has been 100% positive. In addition, many of our employees are also choosing to go to Mira Mesa optometry as their personal optometrist, too. MMO is easy to find in Mira Mesa - they're even better to work with and they do take many different insurance plans! I highly recommend going to Dr Guiang, seeing office manager Rochelle and meeting/working with all the rest of MMO's fantastic staff. Their staff members are horrible. we scheduled appointments for the whole family 1.5 months ago and few days before appointments, they called and told us that only two can be seen because they were over booked. They told us they would try to fit us in that day. Of course it did not happen. Then inform us the rest appointments will be at the same time the Following week. On that day, I called to confirm the appointment, the staff told me the new time which was different than the time they told me the week before. She was trying to tell me it was all system scheduled. The attitude was like, you either take it or leave it. Also trying to say that's not their fault, and trying to right the wrongs. That is very sad. I had been going to Mira Mesa Optometry for over 15 years with Dr. Guiang and always had a great experience. I recently found out he left after the clinic was bought out (by Total Vision), but since the location is convenient for me, I decided to give one of the new doctors a try. Dr. Ma was nice enough, but the entire experience felt rushed and very impersonal. Instead of actually performing the usual vision tests for near/farsightedness, color vision, peripheral vision, etc., I was basically just asked whether I noticed any changes in my vision. I wasn't even asked to read the eye chart, just if it looked blurry or not. She glanced at the retinal scan, said everything looked fine and my prescription was probably the same, then sent me straight to the glasses sales department. The entire appointment, including the technician portion, took less than 15 minutes. It definitely felt more focused on moving patients through quickly and selling glasses than on providing a thorough eye exam. If all you need is a quick prescription update, this may work for you. But if you value a doctor who takes their time and does a comprehensive exam to make sure nothing is being missed, especially as we get older, I can no longer recommend Mira Mesa Optometry under its current corporate ownership, Total Vision . read more

I finally got a refund but it was months later with a response that their system was messed up and that's why it took so long.

Gave this woman in the front desk my $300 metal frames for adjustment and she ended up using a heat gun on them. I thought it would be obvious to anyone that using low heat on metal will not help, since you would need crazy amount of it for a change to even occur. But here we are. This caused for the paint and screws on my frames to bloat and crack. Paint peeled off, and not a single ounce of accountability has been taken by this optometry. $300 frames down the drain because some lady decided so. Was told by the front desk worker that she will take accountability but no word has been heard back from this business. She also kept my frames and told me she would reach out to me about a replacement. Been about two weeks and no word back from Total Vision. I was a returning patient with a history of purchasing multiple year's worth of contact lenses. I called to schedule my appointment and spoke with one of the female staff (Lisa? Or Lily? Can't recall). She scheduled me promptly and I asked if I could pick up a pair of trial contact lenses to hold me over. She put me on hold to ask one of the decision makers and then told me that it would be okay to come pick up the trials. I expressed my gratitude and she said today would be a good day to pick up since no doctors were in office so I gladly said that works fine and I will come in a couple hours. I then arrive and asked for the one who helped me on the phone and explained who I was and here to pick up the contacts. She then told me "oh I'm sorry I have to see if we can give you the trials I'm sorry for making you possibly drive out here". Confused to why she would tell me this after confirming on the phone to come and pick up the contacts. Her teammate came out and did give me the trial lenses that day. I came back for my appointment a few days later and was helped by a gentlemen in the front. He was super quick and provided great explanations of each device used for testing prior to seeing the OD. Dr. Lin came in and ran through the appt quickly. This was my first time seeing her so maybe this is just how she does her appointments - very quick. I had asked if she had samples of contact eye drops I could try and she responded she did not have any. I asked the optician for samples and he did give me 2 preservative-free single dose samples. So a bit confused to why Dr. Lin said she didn't give samples or didn't check with the staff to provide some. Office isn't bad; not great. Overall, just needs more training and more awareness on the competitive eye doctor offices in the area. If you want more compassion and authenticity in your care, I'd recommend elsewhere. If you want quick in and out like you're next in the factory line then Dr. Lin is your match. If you want a more detailed oriented staff, go elsewhere. If you're detailed oriented and can catch mistakes on your own, then this place is good. Thank you guys for the free trial pairs and a great few years! Dr. G is great and I having been coming here for years but since the transition to Total Vision, the customer service and front desk staff have gone downhill. I scheduled an appointment and showed up to that appointment to find out there were no doctors available and my appointment had to be rescheduled. The front desk staff said they reached out to me and left a voicemail, but I showed my call log that I didn't receive any phone call or voicemail asking to reschedule. What a waste of my time. This is a disappointment to post... but it might be the most sure fire way to get some attention. Overall, the facilities, equipment, and technology here are great. My family has only ever worked with Dr. Guiang, and he himself is a stellar optometrist who engages in excellent communication while building great rapport with his patients. The staff and their apparent neglect or lack of service skills is going to ruin this place. It was NOT always like this, but over the past two years or so the lack of organization, communication, and professionalism are mind-blowing. To be honest, I hate to say something like this... but it even borders on me questioning intelligence. I'm not sure who is in charge of hiring, but what kind of screening or verification standards are in place to make sure they are competent and able to take care of your customers? Whomever is at the front desk needs to represent your establishment properly. I want to begin by saying that I have no issues with Dr. Guiang or Dr. Blanc--my husband found Dr. Blanc's examination to be thorough and unrushed, which we greatly appreciated. My concern, however, lies with the staff and 'opticians.' I worked as an Optician for about 3.5 years from 2016 to 2019, so while I understand that certain aspects like VSP or the software used in optometry offices may have changed, exceptional customer service and a comprehensive understanding of processes remain essential. The optician we worked with, Valentina, was direct when explaining options and pricing, but I found it difficult to engage in the conversation. The only input I managed was requesting polycarbonate lenses and a blue light anti-reflective coating. When I inquired about our coverage, I expected a transparent breakdown from VSP detailing what was covered and the co-pays--something I used to provide to ensure patients felt informed and confident in their choices. This transparency is especially helpful since choosing glasses can be overwhelming. After we found out the total cost, which was in the mid-$500s for two pairs of glasses (one for my husband and one for me), I asked Valentina to save the details of our selections in our file, indicating we would likely return in a few days. She then became pushy, asking why we couldn't purchase the glasses that day so she could "note it in our file." I had never been asked that before, so I explained that it was for financial reasons. Her response included a lecture about buying glasses at Costco, at which point I decided to pay the $39 fee for our retinal photos (which we weren't given the option to decline) and left without looking back. read more

I will never come back here again after my horrible experiences here. Dr. G got my prescription wrong which is just unacceptable. And the office workers are slow and inconsiderate. I had gone in to pick up my prescription glasses because I had gotten an email they had arrived which is fine and should have taken ten minutes max. But I ended up waiting over an hour as they looked in the back and found the other prescription sunglasses and contacts that had arrived at least a week earlier that they just didn't know about because their inventory system sucks. For something like this that cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, I would assume they would be a bit more organized! I will not be returning. read more

Parking is shared with other business. There is construction at the Mira Mesa mall so parking can be limited at times. Some construction dust. Most driveways to get into the mall are low car friendly. This place is right next to the $1 dollar store. This place has a good selection of frames. Pricing is very competitive depending on your insurance. The workers there are nice and informative. I ordered my prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses there. It takes about 7-10 business days. I called after 2 weeks in the morning they said they didn't have it in yet. I called in the afternoon and then I get a different answer saying they've had my glasses in the back. Only disappointing part of the experience. I would recommend this place to my family and fiends. And the next time I need new frames and lenses I'll be sure to stop by here read more

I am a military veteran and I was referred to Mira Mesa Optometry by the VA. Once they received the referral they made contact via text and call. The day before my appointment I received a call from the receptionist. She informed me that I needed to provide them a referral before I could be seen by the Dr. I explained that the VA gave them all of my information and that I did have anything to do with the appointment. She said she would call the VA to get the information and call me back. I never received a call or message. Considering the aforementioned, I showed up early for the appointment. Upon my arrival, she told me that she could not get the information and that I would have to pay $125 to get an exam, that they coordinated with the VA. I gently reminded her that I did not book this appointment and that the VA should have sent something over. She told me she had nothing. She told me there is nothing she could do then she walked away. At this point I called the VA. Waited...as we all know how long that takes...I finally got through and I asked the VA Rep what the process was. He told me paperwork was sent over when the referral was put in(which is how they got my contact information to confirm the appointment) . When I reengaged her, while still on the phone with the VA rep, I told her that they informed me that they sent they sent the paperwork. She responded by saying she had the paperwork. Here is the issue: she was dismissive, short and disrespectful. She told me that she was not going to argue with me, when in fact she had the paperwork the whole time. I don't know about yall, but it is hard to get appointments at the VA. This referral has taken months! Had I not pressed the issue I would have walked away with nothing. Moreover, I would have had to wait to get my prescription. The only reason I did not walk out is that I need glasses. This is unacceptable, I will never come here again nor will I recommend this place to anyone. I am currently still here waiting to be seen and I showed up 30 minutes early. It's 20 minutes past my appointment time and nothing has been done..one other appointment /person was here before me and none have entered since. I wish I could leave. There seemed to be some type of superiority complex at work here but I'm not here for it. Turns out, the lab tech and the Doctor were awesome!!! Dr. G is pleasant, thorough and informative. The staff needs improvement however. Over the years I have witnessed the quality of customer service suffer. Phone calls are seldom answered. Then, after you leave a message you get a call usually two days later. This includes text messages. I unfortunately had to cancel my last two appointments due to unforeseen circumstances that came up unexpectedly. I canceled both appointments well before the usual required 24 hours however, a young girl informed me should I need to reschedule, I would be fined 25.00 because I had already canceled twice. This is unacceptable as my time is as valuable. I followed cancellation protocol. I feel it's time to find a facility where I will be considered a patient instead of another source of revenue. read more

Dr. Guiang is the most thorough Optometrist I've ever visited. He spent time educating me on the progression of my vision, what everything meant, and what I needed to start doing to decrease the changes of worsting my vision impairment. I'm amazing at how caring this provider is and definitely will recommend to others who need a vision check. Dr. Guiang and his team are amazing group of health professionals who put your health and your safety first. I've always had a positive experience with them ever since I moved to San Diego. Their eye exams are quick and informative, and they never make you feel like just any other patient. It's obvious that Dr. Guiang is very passionate about his line of work. He is very detailed in his diagnosis and is more than happy to answer any questions you may have. I would recommend his office to anyone. During times of COVID-19, their hours are from Mon-Thurs 9am-2pm by appointment and only for emergencies whether that be abrasion, infections, or other immediate circumstances. The doctor was great; however, I walked out so disappointed with the front staff. They need to do a better job of communicating what the expected co-pay is. When she explained my insurance benefits, she said my exam is $10. She was not clear about the contact lens fitting vs buying contact lens. I came in so I can check my eyes out and discuss contact options, but didn't expect the high copay- especially because I didn't even order lens. I didn't even know all the imaging I did was a separate cost- I thought it was all part of the comprehensive exam. I was shocked when she said my exam today was $202. I don't mind paying as long as I know what to expect. Surprising your patients is just wrong..it feels deceptive. read more

I've had issues with my eyes since I was a kid and didn't have much success with the Doctors I've experienced so I just went without glasses or contacts my entire life. After meeting Dr Guiang I now have contacts and glasses and a can see great. I'm almost 50 now so I went along time suffering. Not the case anymore thanks to him and his staff. Dr. Guiang is amazing and I felt like he took his time to give me the exam and explain everything. Several months later I am now being billed an additional $39 for my exam. When looking at receipts and my insurance claim, the total that I paid and what my insurance says I owe match up. But somehow I still owe an additional $39 because they claim I didn't pay the full amount of the exam. Total Vision says it was supposed to be $55 for the exam, which I thought I paid, but they are now telling me I only paid $16 toward that and the other $39 was toward "optomap" that they don't bill insurance for which is why I don't see it on my insurance claim. Why was I not billed the full amount at the time of my visit if they knew I didnt pay the full exam cost? I have never had this issue at any other optometrist. Total Vision is now charging an additional $39, not present on my insurance claim, months after my visit for a test they didn't even inform me cost more and wasn't part of my insurance. Great Staff and Doctors! My family has been going here for years and always receive great care and service!

So I'm sharing my experience with this business. I am from out of town and my flight in to San Diego was delayed for 6 hours than cancelled. I was sent to Palm Springs got there after midnight to learn my bags were not there. My contacts were in my checked luggage so I'm sleeping in daily contacts after a flight from hell. I called and asked if I could purchase samples so I can give my very tired eyes the relief they desperately need. They asked I send them my prescription which I obliged only to be told they couldn't even spare one sample as it is for "customers only" Sad something they get for free they wouldn't be humane enough to offer any kindness. If I could give zero stars I would. Horrible experience, have been waiting for my prescription glasses for two months now. They billed my insurance and I can't just go elsewhere at this point. I call them no one picks up or when they pick up they promise glasses in 2 days, same thing when I go there in person they promise expedited shipping in 2 days, mind you 2 months later still no glasses. After 26 years of life.... it's finally time to get glasses! Since this is my first ever legit optometry appt, I really didn't know what to expect. I called for an appointment, which was super easy. Since I didn't have insurance, it costs me $120 I think... Many people have told me that this is pricey compared to others, but to be honest, I believed that it was honestly worth it because they put you through so many eye tests and Dr. Guiang explains everything extremely clear and even has moving diagrams on his computer to tell you EXACTLY what's going on with your eyes. I left feeling extremely informed. He was super nice too, as well as all other employees that helped me check in, take eye tests, and pay. Since I only need glasses when I drive, I decided not to buy frames there and opted for a more affordable retailer, but the prescription lenses prescribed by Dr. Guiang was on point and I can finally see far away! I have been getting my contacts here for the last couple years. This year was completely different. I was told they were going to do everything in their power to help me get my insurance to cover my contacts but it seems like little to no effort was made. I had contacted my insurance myself and explained the situation, all for them to tell me they would cover them. Picked this optometrist as it's close to home and had fairly good reviews! To be honest I've gone a couple years without renewing both my glasses and contacts prescriptions so I was in dire need of a check up (yay new insurance). Before I had gone to neovision optometry across the street at the target shopping center and the vision center on the miramar base - both spots chosen for me by my parents so it was nice to have my own choice for once! Also want to mention that I've waited till after I received all my contacts/glasses to make this first impression review! Walked in a little past my appointment time on a Saturday, it was busy but check in was a breeze, very friendly front desk associates. After I finished my paperwork, I was called back within 5 min for my initial vision exams. There were a number of them but the assistant helping me explained each well and we were done within about 15 min. After that I was immediately called back for my exam! Dr. Cheng was very friendly and cared about my eye health. She went over the exams I had just taken, generally good results and my eyes are healthy! She went over good practices for keeping my eyes protected, especially when outside or when exposed to computers or phones during work or leisure time. We went into the prescription review and mine needed some improvement, but Dr Cheng took her time in showing me all the lines of letters and asked for differences or clarity in different slides. Eventually we got me seeing clear again!! She signed off on my prescriptions for glasses and contacts and helped me get me new contacts and solution to walk out with! Picked a new and very nice pair of frames for my glasses and everything price wise was handled easily with insurance. Even got a rebate for my contacts, score! I was told it would be about 14 business days for my eyeware to come in. My exam was on a Saturday and by the following Monday I got the text that my contacts were ready! Picked those up without a problem, and just under 2 weeks later got the second text that my glasses were ready to be picked up! When I walked in for pickup (2p on a Saturday) I was taken care of right after walking in. I had a seat and my glasses were brought to me and adjusted - the associates even found that I was over charged by a bit at first visit so I had a refund as well! Good catch on their end! Overall very good first experience here, friendly staff, fair expectations as to when my new eyewear would arrive, ease of using insurance - hope to come back here when my prescriptions need renewals! read more

People were nice, but my appointment was at 11:00am and I wasn't seen by the doctor until 12:10 pm. When I first went in I was given an amount for my frames after the appointment the amount went down significantly due to new policy. Again people there are nice, but overall service was not good, wouldn't go back. An hour delay doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you're 15 mins late for an appointment they cancel it. read more

So glad I went to another optometrist for another exam a year after feeling a bit off about the frames and glasses And contacts from here. The frames and contact selections here that they try hard to sell to you (contacts have to be prescribed by brand so wouldn't you offer patients the better and recent brands) had my eyes irritated, temples aching, and just always tired. Average for glasses Avoid for contacts And my prescription at a different office one year later is .5+ different and way more comfortable, but I can't rate on that because they probably were just going by their machines. Dr. G is great front office staff not so much. Last appointment I had they were triple book and after 1 1/2s I walked out. My wife got her exam. Went today and because of some insurance something was mess up only I was able to be seen. My wife needed her eval done. We cancelled and was told we could not schedule our appointments together next time. It was funny because of the pandemic we went another place. The doctor there told personally to go back to Dr. G. I have had 3 exams here, one for contacts and 2 for glasses, and none of these prescriptions were good. I do have a "slight astigmatism" but haven't experienced as much discomfort as I have with prescriptions from MMO. They also recently switched out of my network insurance but assured me that they would discount as a courtesy as if insurance was covering. I waited a month for my glasses and finally called them about it. They said they didn't have my order and would call me back. A week later they called and said the frames were never even sent to the lab. I asked for a full refund (after a month of back and forth of them claiming I cannot return the glasses even though I had never even received or worn them!). I bought glasses elsewhere and this claim was denied with my insurance because MMO (I later found out) submitted my exam and glasses to my insurance even though they told me they weren't covered by my insurance! I am beyond frustrated with the months of back and forth I've had with this company, which is now owned by total vision, and their dishonesty. I feel totally taken advantage of, under false pretenses. The people seem nice but there is something shady happening here. read more

I just had my annual eye exam and thought I should write a review because this time around I had an amazing experience. In general Mira Mesa Optometry is a good clinic. The staff is very friendly, the service is steller & the selection of product is pretty good. The past few years I've had different Doctors give me my exam. They were all great, but this year I had Dr. Cheng & she was fantastic. She took the time during our examination to explain the different tests that she's running & the purpose behind them. She also explained to me how using different words within an examination can help the patient better convey to the doctor their actual prescription needs. One can construe this as someone just being unnecessarily detailed, but I took it as someone who genuinely cares about her craft & her patients. As I was finishing up with the admin at the front desk I over heard a conversation with another patient that was in the lobby trying on glasses. Dr. Cheng said "Hi" and the patient said "Oh my Gosh I didn't think you'd remember me its been so long since I've seen you". I just thought it was an interesting conversation, because first off Dr. Cheng showed me that she doesnt' think of her patients as customers but as people looking for the care they need for their eyes & second for the patient to have that lasting impression from their first exam that she remembered her years later. I highly recommend coming here for your eye exams. read more

I just got notified that my personal data has been stolen due to a "data security incident" that took place in October. This is an example of why I never put my social security number on any form in medical offices. My exam was a year ago, and I've contemplated going back but have instead found another doc. My exam here was rushed. Getting through accurately with an appointment took several attempts. They charge twice for the contact lens exam in case you have to come back to be refit. (which I did only because the exam was so rushed) I had my prior doc for over 20 years and never had to go back twice. Too bad he's not in the insurance network. For what I received, they are very over-priced. Overall, the entire experience left me feeling very negative about returning. When a doc has more than one location, it feels more like an assembly line than a caring environment. read more

I went into Mira Mesa for a standard contact lens eye exam, which I've done multiple times in the past at other optometrist's offices. When I got to the back room the girl quoted me the price telling me I'd have to pay a $10 copay (which is incorrect, my copay is $40), plus a fitting fee of $75 - $125 for the fitting, which my insurance would only cover 10%. I immediately pushed back, because I knew right away the $75 - $125 was for a premium fitting, which I've never needed in the past and even if something had changed and I would need it now, they hadn't even looked at my eyes yet to determine that. She kept insisting that a fitting was standard and had to be done every year despite me pushing back multiple times, telling her I wear standard disposable soft contact lenses and I do not have any unique issues (like stigmatism) to warrant a special/premium fitting. At that point she even pulled out a paper indicating these charges were normal and again insisted that a special fitting needs to be done every year. She indicated these papers were related to my insurance, but I didn't look beyond the fee she pointed to for the letterhead. I was not willing to pay anything beyond the copay, so I walked out. Since I left I have called both my insurance and another optometrist, whom I made an appointment with, and confirmed that I was correct. I am only responsible for a standard contact lens exam co-pay of $40 since I do not need a special fitting. Beware if you go here, know your insurance deductible (maybe print it out) and don't let them charge you for a premium fitting unless you actually need it. read more
