-- This place deserves One STAR Review -- A true review matters most when things don't go right the first time -- especially when it's something as simple as reading glasses. I came here for glasses meant for reading, not for driving, yet they made them completely wrong. I brought them back for correction, and after waiting two weeks, I was called to pick them up again -- but the issue was still not fixed. The glasses are way too thick and heavy -- they look like coke bottles. When I brought this up, the doctor and staff blamed "material differences" and even said I might need a new quote to fix it. That's not acceptable. My vision is perfectly fine; I only need glasses for reading, yet they got it wrong twice. I also mentioned that my previous pair was purchased here two years ago with the same prescription, so why are these new lenses more than double in thickness? Their explanation was that my old pair was "progressive" and the new ones are "single vision," which doesn't justify the poor quality. Overall, a very disappointing experience. read more

Had my annual check up with Dr. Cao today! She and front office were all super friendly, maybe one of the assistants was not as outgoing but she was efficient at her job. The tech in the office is great! Electronic forms and receipts, to the machine that takes pics of the back of your eye so there's no need for those stupid dilation drops! And they have a tiny handheld glaucoma test machine that blows just a little air in your eye now!!! They also saw my husband for an emergency visit so quickly! read more

Located right across kebab shop (see my other review for that), in the hmart plaza. My optometrist form this office is no other than, Dr Chung. My first impression of him, wow this guy is young, younger than any other optometrist I've had in my whole life. Not to say he's inexperienced or anything, just different from what I'm used to. Our whole family has been seeing Dr. Allen Chung for years, and I can't recommend him highly enough. I've struggled with chronic dry eyes for over 10 years, but thanks to various treatments from Dr. Chung, my eyes rarely feel dry anymore. He stays up to date on the latest research and treatments, and his approach is both kind and highly effective. My mother-in-law has an eye disease (retinitis pigmentosa) that can lead to blindness, and Dr. Chung has been incredibly knowledgeable and thorough in monitoring my children for early signs. I got my annual eye exam here as a new patient today and had an outstanding experience. I was greeted promptly and walked through some new patient forms electronically. I finished filling those out right at my appointment time of 12pm then immediately brought back for testing. Katie explained everything so thoroughly with each test, making sure I was comfortable throughout. I was incredibly thrilled that I did not have to meet my mortal enemy - the machine that blows air into your eyes lmao! The office has really advanced technology that gives a lot of info without being uncomfortable or painful, and without needing to dilate! After the testing, I was brought to another room and Dr. Chung came in in a very timely manner. He was authentic, personable, knowledgeable and professional. He was transparent with everything and explained things so well. Christina checked me out afterwards and helped me explore my options for frames/lenses while being transparent with pricing and availability. Overall, I had such a positive experience here and am thrilled to have a new primary optometrist. I enjoyed my experience in Focal Optometry. Dr Chung performed the test and assessment professionally and explained the results comprehensively. They utilize some new technologies for pre-tests, performed ahead of "real tests", making the entire diagnosis processes enjoyable (and maybe more objective, less human-biased). While Dr Chung is a native English speaker, he also knows the Mandarin of the optometrical jargons so I did not get loss in understanding the diagnostic results. Tony is perfect at explaining the insurance policy and patiently helped me walk through my order of prescription glasses. He is very funny, giving you sufficient options, listening to your needs (circumstances where you will wear the new glasses), finding deals when applicable, and personalizing your order, humorously and thoughtfully. I had a contact exam and fitting here. Dr. Chung is really good. He is very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain everything clearly. He's patient and makes you feel comfortable the whole time. Our insurance covers general eye care, but unfortunately not my son's ortho-k lenses, which are helping with his myopia. Initially, we visited a different eye doctor recommended by our regular optometrist, but that location was a bit farther than I preferred. After the first year, I started searching for an optometrist closer to home. When looking for a new doctor, I always ask for recommendations from trusted sources. Dr. Chung was the first doctor I chose based solely on positive reviews, and I'm so glad I did. Both he and his staff are friendly and attentive. Dr. Chung is brilliant and amazing with kids; he goes above and beyond to provide the best care. I personally have a chronic eye issue, and Dr. Chung noticed it immediately. He referred me to a specialist and gave me clear advice on what to do. Although I have my own specialist covered by insurance, it's not always easy to get an appointment unless it's an emergency. Thanks to Dr. Chung's care and guidance, I was able to see a specialist the same day--even though I'm not one of his regular patients. It's clear that he truly loves his work and is genuinely caring. The last place I visited gave me the wrong frame size, and didn't adjust it correctly. I came here since it was the closest one to me and called ahead asking if they would be able to adjust my frames. They said they would need to ask a higher up since I didn't get my glasses from them and they said they'd get back to me. 5 minutes later, they called again and said they would be able to help. I came in the next day and explained the issue. Christine helped me adjust them multiple times, making sure they fit me while also asking if I felt any discomfort. Eventually they fit, and I asked if I needed to pay. She said it was fine and didn't need anything. I'm very grateful, I assume that she had other things to do, but she went out of her way to help me without expecting anything in return. Great people, would definitely recommend. read more

This was my second visit to the office, and I had an appointment with Dr. Pham. She is literally the sweetest doctor I have had in any medical practice. This time I went in for a contact lens fitting. She explained in great detail all of my options, her recommendations, and they sent me home with trial contacts. The team even sits down with you with different lenses and trains you on how to care for and use your lenses. It felt more like I was having a contact lens party just for me They even have the lumify whitening eye drops (if you've seen them on tiktok) that they let me try! My eyes started to get red from putting in the different lenses, and the drop made them look like I photoshopped them white. I would normally leave my Yelp reviews for food, since i source Yelp for my next meal, but to leave a review on Focal Optometry would be one exception for me. Scheduling was very easy, and attentive to my upcoming appt until the day of. The entire staff from reception, assistant and the doctor felt all the same and made me feel welcome as a new patient and seemed to really enjoy their jobs. I felt very comfortable and enjoyed the entire interaction which I feel isn't the same at a lot of these kind of check ups. I was unhappy with another optometry store in Scripps Ranch. This is a very popular optometry, but countless times I had very negative experience. No issues with the optometrist himself, but the staff was not knowledgable; in fact, worse is they gave incorrect information multiple instances, including costs. So, I made the switch to Focal Optometry in July and haven't looked back. First, my optometrist was friendly, knowledgeable, and provided exceptional service. Second, the staff is always very welcoming, knowledgeable, and accommodating. I have had a several positive experiences since becoming a customer. Most recently, my frame broke and I called and they were able to order a free replacement by phone as it was under the 1 year warranty. No questions asked. One week later, the frame arrived. I received a text and came into the store that same day. I was in and out in 15 minutes with my new frame! They have been very helpful and willing to heat up the frames and reshape it to fit my face a few times already. Very good prices as well. Overall, excellent price and superb customer service. Cannot ask for a better place to get your prescriptions and eye glasses. My wife will now switch to Focal Optometry! read more

Focal Optometry puts protecting the health of both their staff and customers first. The business has strict rules before you can enter, all staff are properly protected, customers are required to have masks on, and everything that has been touched goes through an extensive cleaning process before going back on the shelves. The staff were all extremely kind and helpful; they spent so much time helping my husband and I pick out the perfect pairs of glasses and were so accommodating with all the questions we asked about transition lenses, insurance, etc. They have a wonderful selection of glasses, use some of the latest technology, and prices are all very transparent. I never once felt I was being up-sold, and all procedures were explained to me in detail. Dr. Chung was so great to work with -- he was friendly, professional, and most importantly, he really cares about his customers. He acted like we were his only customers that day, which we knew was definitely not true because after us there were several patients who had appointments lined up. While we were there, someone even came in asking to be seen right away, and the business could have easily turned them away but the staff promptly took all his information, got him situated, and Dr. Chung took him in. If you're looking for a highly skilled optometrist and a great selection of the latest/coolest glasses, this is definitely the place to go. I was due for an eye exam and new glasses/contacts and Dr. Chung went above and beyond my expectations. For my routine eye exam, Dr. Chung took the time to explain in detail everything that's going on with my eyes and what preventative care habits I should adopt to take better care of myself. The office is also equipped with a much more modern set of machines and equipment than all the optometry offices I've gone to prior to coming here. After all the exams, Josh the optician patiently assisted me with finding the right pair of glasses that fit my eye needs as well as the shape of my head/face. Josh is very knowledgeable as all of his recommendations were excellent and for the first time I feel like my glasses are as functional as they are stylish. Make sure you call in for an appointment whether its for an exam and/or shopping for glasses only. They ask that you call again when you're outside because they are doing COVID-19 screening questions and they will come out and spray your hands with sanitizer after. They're super booked up to be honest. He did warn when I called for the appointment that we might have to wait for about ten minutes or so due to limited capacity. The gentleman who assisted me was great. He was able to get me in and out and realized he could get my paperwork done faster than the couple ahead of me debating life. So I was thankful he asked the couple if they would let him help me as I was ready to go with my selection and had my insurance ready/accessible through their system. He was cool to show me the screen of the break down of the cost after insurance. He didn't try to upsell or push me hard like a car salesman on any lenses add-ons. I knew what I needed. I will say the selection was kinda limited. I wish they had more rimless demos. The only issue that will trip you up is if you're behind a patient that is super indecisive or trying super hard to get the cheapest pair or pulling some "negotiation" which they don't do. So the back up is due to the patients before you. I would have to say there are some people who just walk right in without following the optometrist office's protocol. I get one couple was super annoyed after us as they were waiting outside following the protocol but its COVID-19 so capacity is limited inside. They do seem short handed but again due to the former. read more

High safety precautions: Staff asked some clearance questions around my potential exposure to covid and scanned my temperature before I even entered the building, which made me feel secure that they were properly vetting patients. Once inside, I saw equipment, hands, and surfaces being regularly disinfected with cleaner and UV light, which adds to the safe atmosphere. Personal experience: I haven't gone to see an eye doctor in 6 years, so I was pretty nervous about the tests. The staff and Dr. Chung were very reassuring throughout every test and took the time to explain what was happening.
